Allah? really a name?was it?

IN Aramaic his name is Alaha or El
In Arabic his name is Allaahu or Eel
In Hebrew his name is Yahweh/Jehova, Eloh or ElohimThe Jews don't like to mention his name out of respect. So they say Adonai.
Illun is completely different from Allaahu.

AnwarSalaams Elke,Progod,
That's why the Jews / Bani Israil called Him YHVH (Yahuweh/Yahuwah) which means He Who Is or He is He. This is due to EHYEH ASHER EHYEH (I Am Who I Am) answers from God when asked about His nature.
God is boundless on every side on all dimensions, and that explains the choice of word ECHAD (Hebrew) and AHAD (Arabic) which means ONE instead of YACHID (Hebrew) or WACHID (Arabic) which means "Single" or "Finite One". Thus He is THE INFINITE ONE. And how many "infinity" that could be possibly exist? Only ONE / ECHAD / AHAD.
From the Quran we can read that God is very near, nearer than our jugular vein. And that EVERYTHING depends on Him, and that also explains the choice of "RABB" word in the Quran, which means "Cherisher/Maintainer". Thus RABB AL-ALAMIEN eq CHERISHER / MAINTAINER OF ALL UNIVERSES.
So we cannot say that God is X (Replace X with anything; including "life" because He Is He / He Is Who He Is. And life itself is just one of His Creation.
Alhamdulillah (All Praise to God) / Hallelujah (Glory Be To YHVH)
He has shown the perfect relationship for humans to follow - that is it - i think.
To be Graciouse, Merciful..........e.t.c

peace mz,
could you explain the original post a little bit more?Salaams Br,
We sent not a messenger, but to be obeyed, in accordance with the will of Allah. If they had only, when they were unjust to themselves, come unto thee and asked Allah's forgiveness, and the Messenger had asked forgiveness for them, they would have found Allah indeed Oft-returning, Most Merciful.
We have sent down to thee the Book in truth, that thou mightest judge between men, as guided by Allah so be not (used) as an advocate by those who betray their trust;
Eample of ?His?
Biyameeni-hi = in his right hand.
wa Rusuli-hi = and His messenger
Bi-Alla-hi = and His bond/relationship/zest.
From the above two ayah?s you can grasp He who is talking isn?t Allah, but He is talking about Allah and other things.
And the ?he? which is attatched to Alla isn?t part of the word.
Alla or illa is simply the relationship or bond of the God to the rest of the creation, and He has explained the bond in terms we can understand and has asked us to create this also.
The bond or the relationship is explained throughout the quran by the attributes.
Allah isn?t ? wasn?t a name. His name doesn?t exist in the quran.
Look at sura 171
Glory to (Allah) who did take His servant ??.
Here they are embodying the word ?Allah? in the brackets as no name occurs.
God Bless.

Easy simple/mz. Are you saying that allah is really a 'link' to certain attributes,eg linking to being merciful,forgiving,etc....? Very interesting...

Salaams Br,
yes i think "Allah" is His(Gods) link/bond/relationship that is the lifeforce and isn't God, and we don't know what God is. This bond is described in the quran by the various attributes. And we are told to set up this in our environment, for people. It does exist more in some countries - i think you will, can see it.

Peace,
There is a difference between Allaahu (alif, lam, lam(shaddah), alif, ha and illun (alif, lam, lam). Illun means bond, family, things sacred. Allaahu means God, it is a name. These two words really don't have anything to do with each other. Firstly, the ha is separate by the alif which would make the word allaa and not Ill, Second the first alif is fathah'd in Allaahu and kasra'd in illun. Illun and Allaahu are not the same words and are not connected. This is fancy, i.e. iftiraa'un, with all due respect.

Peace,
When discussing Yahweh and Elohim and other such names of God. You have to understand that you are discussing the etymology of these names.
These names were originally descriptions and became names. We all know here that allaahu came from al-ilaahu and became allaahu due to elision as it evolved into a name. Just like you will find that yahweh and Jahova are not used by Jews and Christians not in their original sense. You will find that if you break down these names they do not exacly split into different words they rather blend, and we can just see where they came from. The same is with Allaahu. It comes from the god as in (the only god or the best god) and that is why we have the name Allaah for God now in Arabic. That is why some here choose to say the god instead of God. Not realizing the God is also a name which derived from the word a god or the god.Godbless,

That's fine. You are entitled to your opinion. However, one last question. How do you compensate for the alif after the two written lams in Allaahu, or the shadda'd lam which would make the number of prononounced lams actually 3 lams? Al-illu only has two lams(no shaddah or over them at all) and no alif after these lams. And furthermore how do you compensate for the difference between Ill and All in the first part of the word. How do you explain these differences between the two words?

Elke says
as far as i know Arabic was not a written language (i mean with fixed grammatical rules aso) at the time of revelation quran and think that,as mz says, the grammar was derived FROM quran.
Lady Elke,
No, no no. All languages have fixed grammatical rules(even broken languages, pidgins and creoles). Grammatical rules are what make language intelligible. To the contrary there were no books on this nor people who studied how they used their langauge in order to put it into book form or teach it to foreigners. (if the studied it they studied it they mocked it from the mouths of the eloquent only).
The grammar was not derived from the Quran. Rather the grammar was confirmed through the Quran (among other sources) being a rigid unchanging source of the language to cofirm with.
MSA grammar (which unfortunately is also called fushaa) doesn't follow all of the grammatical patterns of true fushaa seen in the Quran and the hadeeth and other old sources. Modern Arabs (and other peoples who speak dialects of grander formal languages) tend to think that thier colloquials don't have grammar (because they don't concentrate on how they say what they say or why, they just say it). So it is a fallacy for someone to think that just because Fushaa 2000 years ago was a commonly spoken langauge that it didn't have grammar, and that that grammar had to be constructed. No. The fixing of grammar is correctly the fixing of all usages of a current language, recording it and sticking to it as a standard of expression. Sometimes grammar is reduced to make a standard language (like in the case of MSA). At the same time that language can keep evolving on the level of the street (if in contact with many other different languages and new events). It can evolve on the street very drastically and yet stay relatively the same in the classroom. If the dialect evolves drastically you get situations like you have in the Middle East and the Carribean, and the portugues African islands. Where the standard English(being derived from an older more wide used dialect of English), Portuguese and Arabic are used side by side with the colloquial dialects(educated speakers are able to switch back and forth at will). And the speakers of these dialects always say that their language doesn't have rules. Which is ridiculous. Yet epidemic.

you can't show me these things in the oldest qurans or can you?

Salaam Elke, Anwar...All
I do not think grammar was derived from the qur'aan nor confirmed by it. Arabic grammar as we were taught is more complicted than that of the qur'aan. Example is the dual rule, which is hardly recognized in the qur'aan, or the definition of plurals as human and non human. And most important the existance in the qur'aan of the specific feminine, contrary to linguistics rules of all languages, including Arabic.
-
Allah is not an actual name of the Lord of our creations but capitalized from constricting "al" (the) and "illah" (god) to become Allah (The God), emphasizing the magnanimity of a Creator of the worlds via the figment of our imagination. It is relevant to one's thought process and significant to our moral, ethical and spiritual values as dictated by signs of circumstance and nature, without which man would remain savage.

try to put "the God"
