I think you are having a misunderstanding of 424 and I will try to clear it.
According to al-qur'aan, the steps in marriage seem to be as follows
- Nakah - marriage in front of witnesses
- Setting of dowry - done at nakah or later but before consummation (see 2236-237)
- Consummation of marriage
- Payment of dowry
424 talks about the payment of dowry after the consummation of marriage (steps 3 and 4). The "istamta3tum" is the consummation of marriage. This is made clear by the next verse 425 which begins
425 "And whoever of you cannot afford to marry (yanki7a) the "muhsanat" believers............,
which makes it clear that the "istamta3tum" is after "nakah". The "muhsanat" believers in 425 refers to the "ma malakat aymanukum" out of "al-muhsanatu min al-nnisa" mentioned in 424, i.e. those women self protected by oath of engagement.
Thus 424 implies regular marriage/"nakah", and there is no indication whatsoever of temporary marriage.

Hmmm, I know its origins, I use it as an easy way to confer acceptance with other posters.
However I was thinking over this issue of whether I should continue to use it as a matter of fact, perhaps I'll say 'Agreed' instead next time! lol

I was going to start a new thread - but just thought id revive this once which didnt really get going so much.....
Where did the idea of mutta/miysar/urfi marriage come from?? I dont see anything in the quran that can lead me to believe they are allowed?
Are these different terms for the same thing or do they differ?
I was reading this book online - heard about it from a link on an old thread on the board

its by sunnis and shias working towards advocating ways for young people to get to know each other - their ideas on this temporary contract are interesting and strange (to me - since i know very little about this topic to start with)
However they do rely heavily on hadiths!
