      Peace sisterfrancesca,

I am sorry to hear your story. But in regards to your question, my belief from what Ive seen in the quran is that we can marry people that arent idolaters, as you stated. There are Christians that fall into either category. Some believe in the Trinity, and thats shirk, while others dont, such as Unitarians. Just because it lists Christians as people of the Book doesnt mean that its talking about all Christians. Its the same as within Islam, there are many sects. If they commit shirk and polytheism, they are idolators and according to quran we shouldnt marry them until they believe, like you quoted.

If your husband already falls in the line of idolatry, seeing Jesus as God, maybe its best to have a talk between yourselves in the best manner. As the quran says

Say "O People of the Book! come to common terms as between us and you that we worship none but Allah; that we associate no partners with Him; that we erect not, from among ourselves, Lords and patrons other than Allah." If then they turn back, say ye "Bear witness that we (at least) are Muslims (bowing to Allah's Will)."

      Hope you find your answer.

      Peace

      Dear Amuslim

Thanks a million for your enlightning answer.
The problem that we have in Islam is that Sunnis and Shias between them make up some 95% of the Muslim world, and we all know that both of them hold ideas that are frankly un-Islamic.
It is no point for the Sunnis to accuse Trinitarian Christians of politeism when they themselves accept Sunnah and Hadith as part and parcel of their religious baggage, which is tantamount to worshipping Prophet Mohammed, even though in an unconscious way.
I don't know much about these Unitarian Christians (I will do some research), but I suspect that they are much closer to Allah than Sunnis and Shias will ever be.

As to my husband, he is a lukewarm Roman Catholic, and the Roman Catholic Church holds on to the dogma that God, because He is Almighty, can do everything, including being one and three at the same time, and that Jesus had both a human nature and a divine nature.
But that does not bother me my husband has always been very laid-back and extremely respectful of my religious views, and has given me total freedom on educating the kids, and all of them have a sound knowledge of the Quran.
Anyway,my husband is a good-natured and God-fearing man, and I sincerely pray that one day I will find him go to Heaven, just by a different path.

The reason why I asked the question in the first place was not not out of concern for myself, but out of concern for girls like that Hina Saleem in Italy who routinely get murdered by their Sunni/Shia relatives because they want to marry someone who is Christian or other.
But again, Sunnis or Shias calling Christians polytheists is like the pot calling the kettle black.

      Peace
      Sister Francesca

Thank you for the kind words. I agree about the sunni and shia problem. For example, in the wahabbi thread, I posted a video of shias in Saudi Arabia going to the graves and praising the prophets and Ah Al-Bayt (Muhammads family) and I think (not sure) the 12 "Infallible" Imams. Instead, they should be praising Allah with all this time!

Unitarian Christians from what I know is like a lot of Christians. They believe that Jesus is Gods Son, but he is not God. I not sure if they believe that Jesus died for their sins though, but I would probably if I had the chance to choose between a Sunni/Shia or a Unitarian, Id choose the Unitarian.

Sorry for not answering your question straight on. I did provide the quranic verses in regards to marrying idol worshippers. Be it Sunni, Christians, etc. if they fall into idol worship, then we are not to marry them until they become monotheists. You could also say that Christians, Jews, etc. are technically Muslim if they follow the tenets of Islam. The only problem would probably be if they accept Muhammad as a messenger, but if they are not idol worshippers and worship God alone, I think that should be enough. My own personal views based on the ayat.

Hope my post gave some insight to the matter. Peace be upon you and your husband. Ayatun

You shall invite to the path of your Lord with wisdom and kind enlightenment, and debate with them in the best possible manner. Your Lord knows best who has strayed from His path, and He knows best who are the guided ones.

Side note, but even if our parents are idol worshippers, we should treat them with kindness

If they try to force you to set up any idols beside Me, do not obey them. But continue to treat them amicably in this world. You shall follow only the path of those who have submitted to Me. Ultimately, you all return to Me, then I will inform you of everything you have done.

        Wa Salaam

Generally, from personal experiences and perspectives, what I've found is that other than western (european) countries, almost all are extremely orthodox, dogmatic, ritualistic and superstitious in nature. The worst are the Hindus and Muslims but I'm sure one finds plenty of well nurtured and balanced people amongst all religious groups, but more so in Christians, Agnostics and Atheists. Perhaps its the East versus the West since almost all religious beliefs originated and continuing to culminate from East (rather never ending as it seems). The Quran Alone concept seems rather a new "western" innovation. My personal views.

          Peace!

If you have noticed, the West opens some leeway for religious freedom & discarding tradition, and education rates are stupidly higher than any "Eastern" country around. No surprise, then. Is Islam constricted to a geographical area? Do the elders possess Islam?

I have no idea what you just stated.

If you have noticed, the West opens some leeway for religious freedom & discarding tradition,
On one hand you talk about religious freedom and on the other discarding tradition.

and education rates are stupidly higher than any "Eastern" country around.
And what does that mean? ???

Is Islam constricted to a geographical area?
              Absolutely.

              Do the elders possess Islam?
              ???

                Absolutely.

That explains why you don't understand the rest of the post...

Religious freedom allows discarding of traditions, most traditions have nothing to do with Islam and everything to do with tradition. The Quran does not like tradition either. What I mean by higher education rates is that it is no surprise people in more educated parts of the world are questioning what is being stuffed down their throats.

As I said in another thread (http//free-minds.org/forum/index.php?topic=14842.30)
it is unfortunately usual for madrasas in the West, especially in Britain, to teach young kids only how to pronounce Arabic, but nothing more.
So when the kids read the Quran in Arabic they don't usually understand what they read, unless they come from an Arabic speaking background.
Not only that, but usually they are also taught a cauldron of Hadiths, Sunnah and all the wonderful things that Mohammed and his Companions did in English or their own family language, that is Urdu, Punjabi, etc.
And the imams who teach those things are usually notorious for their poor level of general education and training on religious matters at best, and for their zealotry and anti-Western hatred at worst, especially those coming from the notorious Wahabi "University" of Madinah.
Now PM gordon Brown is mulling the idea of setting up a special college for providing imams with a comprehensive and systematic training, instead of importing them from overseas.
In a few words, education yes, but of the right type.

Yes, that's what I mean. Parrot fashion nope

I've never paid attention to this before, but at the friday prayer I don't think most of the crowd actually understands what is being said.

In my opinion sisterfrancesca, marrige is a decralation of love witnessed by God. No one can tell you who/not to love, so no one can tell you wether or not you can marry someone.

So, basically, I am inclined to believe that this idea of Muslims Sisters being forbidden from marrying non-Muslims is nothing but a piece of male chauvinism masquerading as religion.

                        Sister Francesca

                        peace sister

Though, there are plenty of such cases (male chauvinism masquerading as religion) but on this one,,, I am afraid , i shall have to agree with tradionlist understanding, which is, that a Muslimah cannot marry a Non muslim.

I dont think there is any confusion on this, because that is what Quran says.

Believers are advised to wed a chaste woman among believers, if one is unable to find one, it is still recommended that a young/maiden MMA among believers is to be prefered,

4-25 If any of you have not the means wherewith to wed free believing women, they may wed believing girls from among those whom your right hands possess ,,,,,

Muslim men allowed to wed the chaste woman among the followers of the previous scriptures, look at the verse, the food is allowed both ways , but, this is not the case with MOhsinnats of believers..

5-5 Today, all good food is made lawful for you. The food of the people of the scripture is lawful for you, and your food is lawful for them. Also, you may marry the chaste women among the believers, as well as the chaste women among the followers of previous scripture, provided you pay them their due dowries. You shall maintain chastity, not committing adultery, nor taking secret lovers. Anyone who rejects faith, all his work will be in vain, and in the Hereafter he will be with the losers.

God has given us free will, the freedom to love, im saying that God wouldn't. I feel that over the millions of years of existance God created a personal law, which has been unbroken since its creation. The free will of his creations is one of the highest. Basicly God will always permit true love, because if God didn't, it would contrast his own personal morals.

We are not discussing true love here. The subject is a permanent liaison of two individuals/families and raising the next generation.

But brother, "The creator" of this free will has advised us to exercise this option staying within the bounds of Devinne will..

Im not sure I understand, could you explain?

We are not discussing true love here. The subject is a permanent liaison of two individuals/families and raising the next generation.

I feel that marrige is a comitment/oath of love. Without love marrige dosent seem to have much reason.

;D Have you ever come across a term "Forbidden love" ?

No, love could never be forbidden, only lust can be.

The boundaries of Devinne will are spelled out in Great Reading

I feel that marriage is a commitment/oath of love. Without love marriage docent seem to have much reason.

Off course one cannot forbid/have a control over Love , but when this luv wants to transcend into a bond (in which getting physical is a must) some could then be categorised as "Forbidden"

                                      Peace,

The marriage Laws in the Quran are there to protect the male, female and children. This is why a Muslim marrying non-Muslim women is allowed, as the Quran laws are the best laws that can be upheld by a husband.

But a non-Muslim man does not uphold the Quranic rules for marriage, and thus the female is not protected by the Quranic Law. Which is why she is not allowed to marry a non-Muslim man.

Every sort of love starts out true but can always run out. Then there are the Quranic Laws that kick in and protect both sides their rights during the divorce. Most of these Laws protect the woman, and thus is why it is important she marries a man who uphold these Laws.

Secterian Muslims do not uphold these Laws as they follow the Fiqh of their sect which mostly contradicts the Quran. And thus these are also not allowed to marry untill they agree to uphold the Quranic Laws.

This is why God is called Ghafoor-a-Raheem, the One who provides Protection by guiding us through the Quranic Laws.

God is not an emotional personal Divinity. Moral is a human perspective on what works for a society and what not. God has no moral, He has laid down a System that follows His Laws in the Universe, anything contradicting these Laws will eventualy fail.

OK, brother, can you please quote me the relevant Surah and Verse that explicitly says so, eg Surah number x Verse number Y.

                                          Peace all

I'll be honest about this, I feel a little bothered by such a rule. Allah knows full well how I feel but perhaps voicing my opinion on here will bring me understanding if anyone can explain, God willing. Already it is said that the population of muslim females is much greater than that of muslim males, and traditionalists use this an excuse for polygamy. They say it is to protect the 'surplus' of women that cannot find husbands. Ok, not everyone here agrees with that (i.e. some here believe polygamy is only allowed when protecting the orphans), however this does mean that not all muslim women will be able to find a husband (and not share him). Allah being All-knowing obviously knew of this, but on top of that He allowed muslim men to marry women from the people of the book. This means that this increases the number of muslim women that cannot find a husband, if the men are marrying christian and jewish women. Apart from using polygamy as a solution therefore (I personally support the view that it is exclusively for protecting orphans and not for this 'surplus' reason or for men's sexual desires) many more muslim women won't have a husband because of this law ???

Can anyone kindly provide a good argument or anything to help me understand?
