Diffentiating ppl of other religions

The following is one of the most abused and misinterpreted verses of the Holy Quran
Those who believe (in the Qur'an), and those who follow the Jewish (scriptures), and the Christians and the Sabians, any who believe in Allah and the Last Day, and work righteousness, shall have their reward with their Lord; on them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve (al-Baqarah 262)
Thinking this is a opportunity to show that Islam believes all religions are good and equal, ignorant people quote this verse in front of non-Muslims but they distort the true teaching.
The verse is talking about those people who believe, and from among the believers were those who were Jews and Christians and Sabians but before the advent of the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) and the revelation of the Holy Quran. They were believers, and the Holy Quran addresses them in the following verse, inviting them to continue to their state of belief by now believing in the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) who has come in fulfilment of the prophecies of their religious scriptures
O ye who believe! believe in Allah and His messenger, and the scripture which He hath sent to His messenger and the scripture which He sent to those before (him). Any who denieth Allah, His angels, His Books, His messenger, and the Day of Judgment, hath gone far, far astray. (an-Nisa 4136)
So those who deny the fundamental beliefs, such as belief in the Messenger and the Books of Allah, of which now include the Holy Quran, they have gone astray and are not believers.
Regarding the People of the Book, among them were believers and disbelievers, and in this dispensation they are completely disbelievers because they have rejected the Holy Quran
It is never the wish of those without Faith among the people of the book , nor of the Pagans, that anything good should come down to you from your Lord. But Allah will choose for His special Mercy whom He will - for Allah is Lord of grace abounding. (al-Baqarah 2105)
This verse should at least make clear that disbelief is not simply restricted to the idolators/pagans, but it is the state of many (and today all) of the People of the Book (christians and jews).
Ye are the best of peoples, evolved for mankind, enjoining what is right, forbidding what is wrong, and believing in Allah. If only the people of the book had faith, it were best for them among them are some who have faith, but most of them are perverted transgressors. (al-Imran 3110)
And finally, there is no religion other than Islam that leads to salvation
The religion before Allah is Islam (submission to His Will) Nor did the People of the Book dissent therefrom except through envy of each other, after knowledge had come to them. But if any deny the Signs of Allah, Allah is swift in calling to account (al-Imran 319)
this above verse makes clear that the People of the Book used to be in Islam, but they later dissented. So the famous verse 262 applies to those People of the Book of the former dispensations, not of this age.
If anyone desires a religion other than Islam (submission to Allah, never will it be accepted of him; and in the Hereafter He will be in the ranks of those who have lost (All spiritual good). (al-Imran 385)

Maybe I'm just paranoid, but might VVA be a 'hypothetical hindu'?

The distinctions can be measured by their impacts, by numbers. "Piety" can't really be numbered but "most merit" can, at least by money.
This sounds like a very touchy issue to me. I'm not understanding how you can measure "most merit" by money. Can you please explain further what you mean? Thanks!

but not in this case
VVA, I still understand, from reading you say
But i am a hindu, i am being differentiated by Muslims. Did allah say that?
If you differentiated your self by claiming you are hindu, then why would it be difficult for you to understand that you are being differentiated by any other so called group?
Perhaps, the best to for me to think to answer your question, "Did Allah say that?" would be to put it this way. As a hindu I believe (if my understanding is correct) you believe in one God which is manifest in many different forms. As Muslims (ones who adhere to Islam, Peaceful Submission to God) we take all the gods and make them into one. the Cherisher and Sustainer of the worlds; Most Gracious, Most Merciful; Master of the Day of Judgment.
Surah 38. Sad, (the Letter) Sad ( S )
- Sad By the Qur'an, Full of Admonition (This is the Truth).
- But the Unbelievers (are steeped) in self-glory and Separatism.
- How many generations before them did We destroy? In the end they cried (for mercy)- when there was no longer time for being saved!
- So they wonder that a Warner has come to them from among themselves! and the Unbelievers say, "This is a sorcerer telling lies!
- "Has he made the gods (all) into one Allah. Truly this is a wonderful thing!"
- And the leader among them go away (impatiently), (saying), "Walk ye away, and remain constant to your gods! For this is truly a thing designed (against you)!
- "We never heard (the like) of this among the people of these latter days this is nothing but a made-up tale!"
- "What! has the Message been sent to him - (Of all persons) among us?"...but they are in doubt concerning My (Own) Message! Nay, they have not yet tasted My Punishment!
- Or have they the treasures of the mercy of thy Lord,- the Exalted in Power, the Grantor of Bounties without measure?
- Or have they the dominion of the heavens and the earth and all between? If so, let them mount up with the ropes and means (to reach that end)!
- But there - will be put to flight even a host of confederates.
I've actually been loosely following the troubles between hindu and muslim in India. I've come to the conclusion that most of the problems between these two seperate groups are merely because of semantics. At the roots I see how both are devout and pious people, but yet being steeped in to seperatism causes such problems to occure.

When the richest man is a penny richer than the poorest man, and both have enough, there is "merit".

I think I understand you are saying. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but you feel if we all were on more equal footing financially that warrents merit. Therefore we can measure this merit by the fact that we are equal in financial matters.
But how does that equate to what you said earlier
Distinction is made in terms of who has the most merit, who does the most good, and hence, who has the most piety.
How does having money make one good?
Thank you for taking the time.

I remember reading about the Sunni caliphate system, mostly the aim of "zakat". The way it was set up, it would need everybody to give and not take unless needed, in other words, somewhat optional.
Rather, what I meant was that if it was completely balanced, it would mean those blessed with wealth by God did as they should have, and spent it freely, and selflessly though not extravagantly. That is a tangible example of "merit", not THE standard.
How does having money make one good?
Goodness is judged by God alone. Money shows a direct effect, usually. If Bill Gates threw all his money & corporation at Africa and turned it into a first-world paradise, is that not merit? Only God knows a person's true intentions, but we are advised to avoid suspicion in each other. Hence, in this case, we would have to consider our hypothetical Bill Gates as merituous.
You're asking me my views, when I am echoing the Quran, you will never get a good answer, because I am not God )
