    Salam,

    I need some help in translation. Is the root word "mathabatan" in 2125 is the same as "mathoobatun" in 2103 and "mathoobatan" in 560? And can someone also tell me what is the meaning of these words.

    Regards.

      The root Th Wau Baa refers to the meaning of "return" wheter it is in a physical sense "residence", (as in mathaaba name of place) 2125; or an abstract sense "reward", ( as in mathooba masdar) 2103 good reward; 560 bad reward.

      It is noteworthy that "Thawb" (dress) is also of the same root, becuase you take it off and return to it again ;D

        See http//www.studyquran.co.uk/PRLonline.htm

        to call/summon (repeatedly), rise (dust), to flow, become abundant.
        something returned (recompence, reward, compensation), to repay.
        a thing which veils/covers/protects, a distinct body or company of people.
        mathabatan - place of return, place to which a visit entitles one to thawab/reward, assembly/congregation for people who were dispersed/separated previously, place of alighting, abode, house, tent.
        raiments, garments, morals, behaviour, heart, dependents, followers, robes, clothes, pure/good hearted, of good character.

        Which root is being used?
        http//www.studyquran.co.uk/Qwribu.htm

        When determining what the root is, e.g. mathabatan, be careful of the prefixes (e.g. "ma...&quot and suffixes ("...tan&quot as most tend not to be part of the root.

          Salam Wakas and Samia,

          Thanks for the info. If the prefixes ?ma? added to the word, does it mean it is an ?act of?? Like sujud is comply, if we add prefixes ?ma? in front, it become and act of compliant. So... if thawab is return, so the word mathaba should it be the ?act or return?? And how about the suffixes ("...tan&quot? What is it stand for?

          Regards.

            Generally speaking, the prefix "ma" would serve as verbal noun (adverb, verb as in makhaafata for fear that, ma3rifa knowing); name of place (as in maktab office, desk); passive participle (as in maktoob written, letter).

              Thank for the reply. Is there any word use in the Quran that shows when prefix ?ma? added to a word it becomes name of place?

                peace,

                When I studied "masjid" I made a note on "ma", which was

                MSJD - parts of a man that are the places of SJD, e.g. forehead/nose/hands/knees/feet etc. Any mode/place/practice in which the act of SJD is done.

                  mashrab 260; 7160; 3673 (root sheen raa baa) place of water
                  masjid place of obedience, prostration (root seen jeem dal to obey, to show obedience) (Wakas elaborated more on this)

                    Salam Samia

                    masjid place of obedience, prostration (root seen jeem dal to obey, to show obedience)

                    From what I read from previous post, masjid cannot mean place. If masjid is a place than how do you explain this.

                    WA- KA- DHAALIKA AcTHARNAA cALAY -HIM LI- YAcLAMO 'ANNA WAcD 'ALLAAH H.AQQ WA- 'ANNA AS- SAAcAH LAA RAYB FE -HAA 'IDH YATANAAZAcON BAYNA -HUM 'AMR -HUM FA- QAALO IBNO cALAY -HIM BUNYAAN (AN) RABB -HUM AcLAM BI- -HIM QAALA 'ALLADHENA GHALABO cALAA 'AMR -HIM LA- NATTAKHIDHANNA cALAY -HIM MASJID (AN) 1821

                    And thus We made their case known to the people, that they might know that the Promise of Allah is true, and that there can be no doubt about the Hour. (Remember) when they (the people of the city) disputed among themselves about their case, they said "Construct a building over them, their Lord knows best about them," (then) those who won their point said (most probably the disbelievers) "We verily shall build a place of worship over them." 1821 (Dr. Mohsin Khan)

                    "Let us surely build a place of worship over them." 1821 (Abdullah Yousuf Ali)
                    We verity shall build a place of worship over them. 1821 (Pickthall)
                    Surely we will raise over them a place of worship. 1821 (Daryabdai)

                    AKHADH / ITTAKHADH = to take, to obtain receive to get to seize grab to take hold to perceive, notice, to gather, understand, infer deduce, to keep, adhere, to observe to take over adopt embrace follow copy imitate to accept to admonish, urge, drive, make use of.

                    REFERENCE FROM THE QURAN FOR "NATTAKHIDH"

                    And he (the man) from Egypt who bought him, said to his wife "Make his stay comfortable, may be he will profit us or (NATTAKHIDH) we shall take him as a son." Thus did We establish Yusuf (Joseph) in the land, that We might teach him the interpretation of events. And Allah has full power and control over His Affairs, but most of men know not. 1221

                    LAcANA -HU 'ALLAAH WA- QAALA LA- ATTAKHIDHANNA MIN cIBAAD -KA NAS.EB(AN) MAFROD.(AN) 4118

                    Allah cursed him. And he (Satan) said "I will take an appointed portion of your slaves;

                    Does NATTAKHIDHANNA means WE SHALL BUILD

                    WE SHALL ADHERE UNTO / TAKE UPON THEIR ACT OF COMPLIANCE

                    What was the ACT OF COMPLIANCE of the people of the caves?
                    We gave strength to their hearts Behold they stood up and said "Our Lord is the Lord of the heavens and of the earth NEVER SHALL WE CALL UPON ANY GOD OTHER THAN HIM if we did; we should indeed have uttered an enormity!" 1814

                    The ACT OF COMPLIANCE of the people of caves was that they refused to call any god other than the Lord of the heavens and the earth.

                    I got this from the previous post by hafeez kazi.

                    Regards.

                      Regards.

                      Dear
                      you have quoted a quote ;

                      masjid place of obedience, prostration (root seen jeem dal to obey, to show obedience)

                      This quote is partially correct because it is not showing a vital component which is part and parcel of this root i.e Bending/stooping.

                      The root ,seen ,jeem,dal, primarily shows
                      -bending physically (Primary meaning at first place)
                      -showing submission (Primary meaning at second place)
                      Both of these elements must be present for human "sajood".For sajood of other animals (which are lacking pick/choose powers as humans have) and inanimate objects only "showing submission" is applicable .
                      It is clarified by Imam Raghib.as below.

                      • ( &#1569 } { } {

                      Lane's Lexicon also elaborates like this

                      Lane's Lexicon also use the words for "sajada" as

                      1. ---he was, or became lowly, humble, or submissive
                      2. --- He bent himself down towards the ground
                      3. --- or it has both signification (quoted above) combined i.e he was or became ,humble ,submissive ,bending himself down

                      Look at another Dictionary of classical arabic

                      ( 395&#1600
                      (&#1583 . . . .

                      (2)

                      • (3) *
                        .
                        It also clearly says primary meaning is bending/stooping and become low ;

                      Another classical dictionary

                      ( 817&#1600
                      . . .
                      Same concept

                      A modern dictionary

                      Multilingual dictionary
                      Arabic - English

                      bow down , worship God , prostrate oneself (in worship) , kneel (with the forehead on the ground) , genuflect , worship

                      http//dictionary.sakhr.com/idrisidic_2MM.asp?Lang=E-A&Sub=%d3%cc%cf

                      Dear from their definition of "Sajada" you can very well deduce the meaning of "Masjid" which is PLACE OF SAJOOD.

                        Also, I did not see sister Samia imply its only meaning is place.
