I haven't read the reviews on Amazon in detail, but every reviewer has given it a five out five.

Islam Past, Present and Future (Hardcover)
It is a very good book on Islam, the different theories, ideas and tries to understand early Islam more as a system that was later formed into a religion. Hans Kung was the main advisor on Islam for the Roman Catholic church but was kicked out, or rather being degraded, because he acknowledged the Quran being from God and that the Trinity was a man-made doctrine. He says the Quran presents the correct picture of the early Christians.
It has everything from A-Z on Islam.

Nadeem, personally, I would be suspicious of the amazon.com ratings, especially if there are so few. I primarily meant the content of the reviews, in which they discuss what each "modern muslim intellectual" is saying.
I am nearly 2/3 through, so I have covered the following parts
Nurcholish Madjid - religious pluralism and tolerance.
He basically outlines the arguments for the above, but anyone who is familiar with AQ will know this anyway.Amina Wadud - women rereading sacred texts.
Again, anyone who is familiar with AQ and has access to the internet can read up on the issues she brings up (434 and beat, two women witness for one man, women's share of inheritance, polygamy etc). It's good for those who have not come across these points before.Mohammed Arkoun - towards a radical thinking of Islamic thought.
An extremely difficult read due to the unusual/archaic language used. Waste of time reading this part in my opinion.Nasr Hamid Abu Zayd - from revelation to interpretation.
Basically outlines why a single interpretation of the message(s) in AQ cannot be considered binding and for all time. This was decent.Arnold, one of the main reasons I bought the book was for the part on Shahrour, so hopefully that'll be good.
HMD, I dont read many books, and the ones I do I mention here, so a list wouldn't consist of much.

Hey Wakas, should we make a sticky list of "Recommended books on Islam, Universe and Quran"?
The book thread has become a bit mixed with Harry Potter and so on. I think viewers would love to have a that is specialized in the above subjects.

I would like to share a website www.tolueislam.com. It is about the late Pakistani Quranic scholar G.A. Parwez. He is author of more than 40 books and hundreds of articles. He mostly wrote in Urdu but a lot of his works has been translated in English. His only english work is " ISLAM A CHALLENGE TO RELIGION. " I have read a lot of scholars but NONE come close to his rational explanation of Quran and sound logic. plz give him a try.

I know his work and also promote it here. His philosophical insight into the Quran and his cosmological view is unparalled in Islamic history.

I do not agree with his above assertions fully,
I do agree that for happiness of a family life (generally) a monogamous marriage is ideal, but declaring that God compromised his laws for a seventh century Arabian society ? is an idea far fetched, and does not reflect a good image of an all powerful, just God.
You do realise that the assertion of a timeless text was a later innovation; something that has never been declared within the Quran itself? the only people who hug onto the notion of a timeless texts are those who want to impose their far-right agenda on everyone else under the guise of 7th century constructs.
May I suggest the book Hans K?ng Islam Past, Present & Future.
He raises some very good points in his book, especially when it comes to supersticion by so many Muslims; like the folk law being passed around that Muhammad was infallible whose stature has been raised in this modern age of almost the equivalent of Jesus within Christianity.

I'm on the last part of the book.
Here is some of the points that were discussed by the reviewers.
freedom to choose and its importance to a society.
It was saying that God's entire system is built upon us being able to choose, whether to follow the right path or not, have belief/trust or not. Now, when a society interferes with this aspect, by restricting info about this choice, influencing one choice over another, puting penalties in place for choosing differently etc then this society will eventually churn out people with a weak belief structure, i.e. they belive in something not through self-discovery and choice but due to familiarity/conditioning/influence, and as soon as this happens, that society, especially if made up of an apparently faithful community, will deteriorate. That struck me, because this has a knock on effect to so many things, especially thinking and application.Interestingly, having the maximum ability to choose, should, according to this theory, produce the most productive person/society.
I will get back to the rest later, I'm off to watch 'Iron Man'.
