      Salaam Alaikum

From a Quranic perspective People of the Book NOT 'Jews and Christians'

The People of The Book / Al Kitab are the 19 Prophets mentioned in Sura Al Anam 683 - 689

These were the men to whom We gave THE BOOK / Al Kitab, and authority, and prophethood. if these (their descendants) reject them, Behold! We shall entrust their charge to a new people who reject them not.

These Prophets were given The Book / Al Kitab, singular, ONE Book

Muhammed,as was given The Book / Al Kitab also....

To you (i.e. Muhammed) We sent The Book / Al Kitaba in truth, confirming WHAT IS BETWEEN YOUR TWO HANDS from Al Kitab

The Quran explains the details of The Book / Al Kitab....

And this Al-Quran / The Reading is not that can be produced from other than Allah, but it is a confirmation, that is between his two hands and the explanation / details of Al-kitab / The Book there is no doubt in it from the Lord of the worlds.

There are 33+ attributes of The Book / Al Kitab 'detailed' in the Quran in the following ayahs

      2.185, 5.44, 3.3, 2.105, 11.96, 2.2, 53.4, 2.75, 6.104, 2.99, 85.21, 72.1, 5.15, 39.23, 12.3, 14.25, 3.138, 15.9, 7.145, 21.48, 2.99, 7.62, 3.44, 23.6, 98.2, 45.18, 9.49, 2.145, 10.35

'The Book' Al Kitab has NOTHING to do with Old Testament or New Testament Bible/Torah

Not all of them are alike. Of the People of the Book are a nation / ommatun that stand / in salat. They rehearse the Signs of Allah all night long, and they prostrate themselves in adoration.

Muslims in this ayah are being identified and confirmed as 'People of the Book'.

Jews and Christians are mentioned as 'reciting from The Book / Al Kitab'

And the Yahood/Jews say, ?That Nasara/Christians are not on anything.? And the Nasara/Christians say? that the Yahood/Jews are not on anything.? And both of them are reciting AL-KITAB/THE BOOK. Like unto their word is what those say who know not; but Allah will judge between them in their quarrel on the Day of Judgment.

Thus Muslims, Jews and Christians are reciting/referring from the guidance of Allah, but creating their own books

And when Allah took a covenant from the People of The Book, to make it known and clear to mankind, and not to hide it; but they threw it away behind their backs (teaching something else), and purchased with it some miserable gain! And vile was the bargain they made!

Say. "Have you seen (these) 'Partners' of yours whom you call upon besides Allah? Show Me what it is they have created in the (wide) earth. Or have they a share in the heavens? Or HAVE WE GIVEN THEM A BOOK FROM WHICH THEY (CAN DERIVE) CLEAR (EVIDENCE)?- NO / Bal, the wrong-doers promise each other nothing but delusions.

As it relates to Sura Baqarah 254....

And remember Moses said to his people. "O my people! You have indeed wronged yourselves by your worship of the calf. So turn (in repentance) to your Originator, and slay yourselves / faoqtuloo anfusakum ; that will be better for you in the sight of your Maker." Then He turned towards you (in forgiveness). For He is Oft-Returning, Most Merciful.

faoqtuloo (1st person, singular, Imperfect Passive Verb, the subject (Mose's people) is the object of the verb)

Passive means a verb, or form of a verb, which expresses the effect of the action on the Subject of the verb, Not active, but acted upon; suffering or receiving impressions or INTERNAL influences

Its the 'slaying' or severing ties with idolatry within the 'soul', the spiritual body (anfusakum)

O you who believe! Eat not up your property among yourselves in vanities. But let there be amongst you Traffic and trade by mutual good-will. NOR KILL YOURSELVES / la taqtuloo anfusakum . for verily Allah has been to you Most Merciful!

          Peace,

I dont know if anyone here mentioned this before. But the argument that the Torah and Injeel are completly corrupt wouldnt be 100% true. I mean archeologicaly speaking we have the dead sea scrols which was before both jesus and muhammad. and what Torah do you think was used during the time of muhammad? How would those Jews find the truth and confirm if there wasnt truth in the Torah and Injeel at that time? I mean all we would need is to have versions that existed before muhammad was born then they would be valid enough to compare with the Quran right?

          Peace

a very direct command from allah to deliver the following

                538

a severe command from allah to observe the torah and the injeel , and a statement from allah that without the torah and injeel people stand on nothing.

and to those who deny the torah and injeel allah says

                548

allah has said the book he has revealed is a guardian over what he has revealed before.

those who claim the torah and injeel are unguarded and not reliable dispute with allah.

Its NOT 'Torah' that Muusa,as was given by Allah, swt it was 'Al Toori'......

There came to you Moses with clear (Signs); Yet you worshipped the calf (Even) after that, and you did behave wrongfully.

"Hold firmly to what We have given you, and adhere / listen to the guidance / ismaAAoo ". They said." We hear, and we disobey." And they had to drink into their hearts (of the taint) of the calf because of their Faithlessness. Say. "Vile indeed are the behests of your Faith if you have any faith!"

The word "Torah" in Hebrew "is derived from the root which in the hifil conjugation means "to teach" (cf. Lev. 1011). The meaning of the word is therefore "teaching," "doctrine," or "instruction"; the commonly accepted "law" gives a wrong impression."
Rabinowitz, Louis Isaac and Harvey, Warren. "Torah." Encyclopaedia Judaica. Ed

The term "Torah" is therefore also used in the general sense to include both Judaism's written law and oral law, serving to encompass the entire spectrum of authoritative Jewish religious teachings throughout history, including the Mishnah, the Talmud, the Midrash and more, and the inaccurate rendering of "Torah" as "Law" may be an obstacle to "understanding the ideal that is summed up in the term talmud torah ( , "study of Torah,&quot, characterized in Jewish tradition as excelling all things."
                    pp.164-165, Scherman, Exodus 1249

                    Moed Erubin 21b
"?.And furthermore, my son, be admonished of making many books. My son be more careful in the observance of the words of the Scribes than in the words of the Torah, for in the laws of the Torah there are positive and negative precepts, but, as to the laws of the Scribes whoever transgresses any of the enactments of the Scribes incurs the penalty of death."

                    KOHELETH 1211-14

The words of the wise are as goads, and as nails well fastened are those that are composed in collections; they are given from one shepherd.
And furthermore, My son, be admonished of making many books there is no end; and much study is a weariness of the flesh.
The end of the matter, all having been heard fear G-d, and keep His commandments; for this is the whole man.
For G-d shall bring every work into the judgment concerning every hidden thing, whether it be good or whether it be evil.

                    "Isaiah 2913-15

                    And the L-rd said Forasmuch as this people draw near, and with their mouth and with their lips do honor Me, but have removed their heart far from Me, and their fear of Me is a commandment of men learned by rote (in writing);
Therefore, behold, I will again do a marvelous work among this people, even a marvelous work and a wonder; and the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the prudence of their prudent men shall be hid.
Woe unto them that seek deep to hide their counsel from the L-RD, and their works are in the dark, and they say 'Who seeth us? and who knoweth us?'

The 'Torah' has absolutely NOTHING to do with the Quran!

Excuse me....your so emotional your NOT thinking rationally....the references to 'Al-Toori' and 'Al-Tawrat' are TWO distinctly different words used in different ayahs throughout the Quran!

Al Toori is spelled with 'taw'

Al Tawrat is spelled with 'ta'

i never posted the word toori, you did that. for you to post the word toori claiming i used that word is beyond ridiculous.

where do you see the word toori in there. it is not in there. why are you behaving like a mentally ill person, arguing about toori, when i have not used the word toori? is something wrong with you?

                                Assalaam Alaikum @Far

The 'Bible' has nothing to do with the Quran, granted there is some truth in the Bible.

Biblos is given a false generic meaning ?Burnt Bricks? and in Hebrew Bible ?Babel? means ?confusion?. However it is not a Greek word but adopted by them from the Caannanite/Phoenicians who gave them their alphabet it means ?burnt bricks? from Babylon or BIBLE-On.

Babylon is the Greek variant of Akkadian Babilu, an ancient city in Mesopotamia (Location 32? 32 11 N, 44? 25 15 E, modern Al Hillah, Iraq). It was the capital of the Babylonian empire from ca. 600 BC. In the Hebrew Bible, the name appears as (Babel), interpreted by popular etymology to mean "confusion". Akkadian bb-il? means "Gate of God", translating Sumerian Kadingirra.

Greeks named Gebail = Byblos. (Arabic Jebail) Greeks while in Gebail imported Papyrus and ?Burnt Bricks? from Egypt with inscriptions

                                  Bible
early 14c., from Anglo-L. biblia, from M.L./L.L. biblia (neuter plural interpreted as fem. sing.), in phrase biblia sacra "holy books," from Gk. ta biblia to hagia "the holy books," from biblion "paper, scroll," the ordinary word for "book," originally a dim. of byblos "Egyptian papyrus," possibly so called from the name of the Phoenician port from which Egyptian papyrus was exported to Greece. The port's name is a Gk. corruption of Phoenician Gebhal (modern Jbeil, Lebanon), said to mean lit. "frontier town" (cf. Heb. gebhul "frontier, boundary," Arabic jabal "mountain&quot. The Christian scripture was refered to in Gk. as Ta Biblia as early as c.223. Bible replaced O.E. biblio?ece "the Scriptures," from Gk. bibliotheke, lit. "book-repository" (from biblion + theke "case, chest, sheath&quot, used of the Bible by Jerome and the common L. word for it until Biblia began to displace it 9c. Figurative sense of "any authoritative book" is from 1804. Bible Belt first attested 1926, reputedly coined by H.L. Mencken.

Is there a verse in the Quran that contains both the phrases "People of the Book" and "Children of Israel"? or those that follow the Torah and those that follow the Gospel?

YUSUFALI Say "O People of the Book! ye have no ground to stand upon unless ye stand fast by the Law, the Gospel, and all the revelation that has come to you from your Lord." It is the revelation that cometh to thee from thy Lord, that increaseth in most of them their obstinate rebellion and blasphemy. But sorrow thou not over (these) people without Faith.
PICKTHAL Say O People of the Scripture! Ye have naught (of guidance) till ye observe the Torah and the Gospel and that which was revealed unto you from your Lord. That which is revealed unto thee (Muhammad) from thy Lord is certain to increase the contumacy and disbelief of many of them. But grieve not for the disbelieving folk.
SHAKIR Say O followers of the Book! you follow no good till you keep up the Taurat and the Injeel and that which is revealed to you from your Lord; and surely that which has been revealed to you from your Lord shall make many of them increase in inordinacy and unbelief; grieve not therefore for the unbelieving people.

During Mohammd's life the People of the Book can only be Christians because the Jews have never followed the Law of the Gospel.

YUSUFALI We gave Moses the Book, and made it a Guide to the Children of Israel, (commanding) "Take not other than Me as Disposer of (your) affairs."
PICKTHAL We gave unto Moses the Scripture, and We appointed it a guidance for the children of Israel, saying Choose no guardian beside Me.
                                    SHAKIR And We gave Musa the Book and made it a guidance to the children of Israel, saying Do not take a protector besides Me;

YUSUFALI And We gave (Clear) Warning to the Children of Israel in the Book, that twice would they do mischief on the earth and be elated with mighty arrogance (and twice would they be punished)!
PICKTHAL And We decreed for the Children of Israel in the Scripture Ye verily will work corruption in the earth twice, and ye will become great tyrants.
SHAKIR And We had made known to the children of Israel in the Book Most certainly you will make mischief in the land twice, and most certainly you will behave insolently with great insolence.

salam pvb. there is no basis for your claim, that only jews and christians are the people of the book.

prove to us from the quran, that muslims are not people of the book.

Are you saying that the verses I listed are referring to Muslims too? Interesting! So Muslims must follow the Bible too?

Technically you will find mu'slims following "the book", but whether "the bible" is the same as what it was, is another question altogether.

Firstly, it's not in it's original language. And we all know that the Quran is not in anything but it's original language.

As for the term "people of the book", "ahl al kitab", it can easily be translated into "people of the bible".

I believe the Christians translate "the bible" into arabic as "al kitab" as well. Or "the holy bible" "al-kitab al-muqadis"

Oh and technically since the Talmudic jews rejected the Torah and created their own traditions of their fathers (talmud), they may not be included in that.

But then again, there are 2 billion Christians, with big missionary efforts on converting the planet into Evangelical Christianity... we might just end up seeing the whole world under the title of "people of the bible".
