comparing Quran's verses and certain terminologies are impressive in this site's articles but I want to get back to the roots of it .
How did you manage to do that or else what brought you to the conclusion that this way is the right way ?The beauty of it is We don't.
We're not sure that it is the right way, and that's why we're having this forum, to discuss with others, to test the hypothesis..

The one thing that all people who come to this journey have in common is "their overwhelming love of God".
That is the million $ question do you love God in your heart over all others that, when evidence is presented in His name, you give that evidence weight over everything and everyone else?
That is what most of us have done when conforented with the verses of the Quran that speak in God's name and claim that His words are complete and detailed...that setting-up any equal or partner to Him is "idolatry" which will never be forgiven...It always boild down to that...God alone, or God plus?
Personally, after walking this path for so many years, I can tell you that my feeling of being 100% certain has never changed...from that first day I became aware of what falsehoods we had been following in the name of God and asked His forgiveness, until today....I have always known is was the truth.

I believe there is nothing worthy of worship except God alone without any partners. God's final revelation to humanity was the Quran which he said he would protect until the end of time.
Verse 262 says "Surely those who believe; and those who are Jewish, and the Nazarenes, and the Sabians, whomever of them believes in God and the Last Day and does good work; they will have their reward with their Lord, with no fear over them, nor will they grieve."
Worship God and follow his teachings (the Quran) and know that he will judge you justly on the day of Judgment on what is in your heart.

If I were a Muslim and trying to find a more mellow version of Islam I would come here. I am very new here as well and interested in understanding and comparing and contrasting the more fundamental Islam with the moderate Islam and see which is valid.
I am glad so many here are anti-hadith because so many hadith appear to me to be anti-morality. Some of the opinions on this site are incredibly 'heretical'. There is an article from a 19er suggesting that two verses in the Koran were added. Reading that blew my mind that a Muslim would consider the Koran had been 'corrupted'. So I think free-minds has a lot to offer.
I'll be pressing and asking questions as I go. So far I have found people willing to answer and respond.

I converted to Islam based on the Quran (thinking how simple things are having one book that makes sense) Then I learned of the Hadith. So I bought a large collection of books from Darussalam publications (all Saudi authorized) thinking I was going to expand my knowledge of Islam.
I was so excited when I got my package, beautiful, green, hardcover, gold print books. I picked up a book (a compilation and explanation of Hadith) and right in the very beginning it talks about killing apostates.
I closed the book and fell back in my chair thinking "What did I get myself in to?".
Follow the Quran, no matter what else you except for religious guidance weigh it against the Quran. God never said he would protect Hadith, Sunnah or the Bible, but he did say he would protect the Quran. So if you believe the Quran to be from God follow his words, because Allah knows best.

But how could such hadith so closely associated with the Koran? Not in the Koran but surely for the majority of Islamic history after the collection of the hadith, these hadith were not questioned by the mainstream scholars?

It seems to be very common in the history of religion. Shabbir Ahmed has some great writings on this subject. Also Reza Aslan say's in his book "No god but God" when talking about Islam's historical traditions, "As a result their accounts more often reflect the political and religious ideologies of 9th century Damascus or 11th century Baghdad, than of 7th century Medina."
If you read Bart Ehrman's book "Jesus Interrupted", he says similar things about the Gospels, noting that the authors views were effected by their conditions and audience.

You are implying that all religions suffer this problem. I can believe that. But unless you know something about Christianity which I don't (quite likely ) what surprises me is how vast the discrepancy is between the Koranic Mohammad and the Hadithic Mohammad we seem to have and yet historically no one seems to have noticed it (in general).

The discrepancy is very clear. Similar story to ayyub, I wasn't even aware of the Hadithic Mohammed as initially I had only read the Quran without any preconceived notions of "Islam". It was after going to the mosque and learning about Hadith that I discovered all the shocking details.

Also go to http//www.ourbeacon.com and read some of Shabbir Ahmeds books in the Library section. There are some PDF books there that should give you some ideas about how things got corrupted.
