Peace be upon you Majidah,
Sawm is according Al-Quran a time for fasting in all means, food, drink, sex, bad behaviours.
When EXACTLY is this time, please give the references from the reading(quran).
It's a time that should be good for us acording Quran 2184
I think we shall fast so many days we can in the month.
Where does it say we shall abstain as many days as we can, and when is the starting point?
And why use all strange translations like abstinence it sounds like you are in need for drugs, in Sweden we use the word abstinence mostly about drugs
Respected sister, SAWM means to abstain. Please look at the verse where mary "sawm" from talking to any human. Did Mary "not eat and drink" from talking to humans? Or did she ABSTAIN from not talking to humans?
Respectfully sister, if you do not realize that sawm means "abstain" and not "fasting", then there is NO WAY that you can truly know what 'Sawm" is.

Salaam Sister Majidah,
It was Kyle who asked you about Sawm, not me!
I was never confused about fasting, btw.
What caught me by surprise is your generalizing when you wrote to test you guys in free-minds!
I really can't get what you mean by that? The guys and gals in Freeminds come in all shapes and sizes roll I mean, we don't belong to one school of thought! I, for one, am one old fashioned traditionalist!Taj

A lot of people find that a difficult concept to grasp. That's why we have some people come in here and call the members a sect (Not realizing they're members too! lol ).
Peace!

So you mean that Mary had abstenence because she wasn't allowed to talk? This sounds strange to me I think she was happy that she hasn't have to say anything to her people who only judge her wrong.
Respectfully sister, if you do not realize that sawm means "abstain" and not "fasting", then there is NO WAY that you can truly know what 'Sawm" is.
How can you say that, are you sitting there with the best translations?Peace

Salaam Br Taj,
I didn't mean anything in particular just that I think that you guys have discussed this issue during a long period and still so many ?????
So I was only a bit of ironic that's all.
Never mind!
Peace
Sis Majidah

Personally, I haven't engaged in any discussion regarding Ramadhan but if the members here did, then I don't really see why not! One can never be done discussing the Quran, the more you look in it the more it opens up, endlessly! So amazing!
I admire that Layth didn't hesitate to lay out his theory in spite of its remoteness. I find his move very daring, and daring to me means trust, in oneself as well as in God!
So even if I don't participate in most of the discussions here, I still admire them, and consider myself lucky to be able to read the sometimes "unusual" ones!
There is no judging involved between the participants. Here, you would find great respect for the other opinion, no matter how strange that opinion may sound! That is why this forum is really cool )So, anyway, Majidah, keep speaking your mind and breath the freedom that is allowed here )
And btw, I am a sister!
Peace
Taj

In Quran verse 2185 it says that we shall fast the month of Ramadhan. But you must realize that the God's system remains the SAME for all people since the beginning, it did not start with the Arabs. Abstaining was instructed for all people, the month called "ramadhan" is a newcomer, when would Abraham have abstained? He certainly did not go by the Arabic months/calendar.

The word "abstain" means to stop doing something, with Mary, she STOPPED talking, with the traditional method of fasting, one STOPS eating food and drink. I do not understand yet what we reallu must do, but the word "sawm" definately meansn "abstain", not "fast".
Respectfully sister, if you do not realize that sawm means "abstain" and not "fasting", then there is NO WAY that you can truly know what 'Sawm" is.

Respected sister, please show me the verses for "sawm" and tell me how you can possibly justify this word being "fast". Lets start there.

Peace be upon you Taj,
No, I have never seen that discussion, please provide some clarification for us on that subject.
