Please, if you can, why was he so great? Or is it that, that is how he has been depicted to us!

The one who built the Kaaba? did he?
the one who broke the idols? surely we can all do that now aswell!

or is there something else .

    Thanks All.

I think there is a LOT more than just that. But God didn't include it in the quran or other books because they are guidance for mankind, not biographies of the prophets. All the people chosen by God as examples are in the top 99.99999999% of humans in character when you think about it. The guy lived a long life so presumably did a lot of things that would justify being chosen by God.

Regardless the story in the quran is not something your average or even 'cream of the crop' person really does these days. Breaking the idols and going against the entire modus operandi of everyone around you for the sake of the truth is very symbolic alongside the more physical meaning. What's the equivalent in modern times? Especially considering the story of Moses. People were on an entirely different level of cruelty and violence back then. Going to pharoah would have been exceedingly dangerous, both for him and the israelites who would suffer on his part, and they did. Nowadays weaponry is much more powerful but the rate of violent death has actually vastly decreased in proportion to those days.

What I'm saying is, if Abraham is 'average' then we all suck pretty bad.

        Peace all.

As far as I am concerned all the people that served GOD deserved their place at " God".

I do not know all the details about Abraham except what the Lord mentioned in HIS scripture. In that same scripture GOD asks that we make no distinction between HIS prophets. Therefore it is up to GOD how great Abraham should be.

So Abraham did his duty. Let us take that example and do ours.

        Peace.

Abraham is given a very noble status in all of the major religions but why or what was his standing to give him this position?

              Salaam 357,

No aayaats? If, people think Ibrahim's was given a very noble status without AlQuraan's evidence, it has nothing to do with the fact.

              Did Allah say that? hmm

                Sorry mmkhan,

i was trying to ask what is the purpose of Abraham in the quran, what is the lesson he is giving us - to be given the high position of the leader of men?

I am sure the lesson is in the quran but is not recognised to my knowledge.

Its entirely to do with illegitamate children to my knowledge and belief.

Have you heard of the "right of the first night"? It was practissed in periods past.

irrespective of that illegitamate children where killed off, it still happens in some countries.

His story is basically to teach people to stop this, i believe.

Like Jesus also without a father!

But mind , these are just my thoughts.

                peace

                  Yes, ref chapter 38

3845 And remember Our servants Ibrahim and Ishaq and Yaqoub, men of power and insight.
3846 Surely We purified them by a pure quality, the keeping in mind of the (final) abode.
3847 And most surely they were with Us, of the elect, the best.

I don't know what you understand from Abraham's example. What I personally understand is that in an age where you have little evidence to prove or disprove God aside from your intuition, he chose full faith in the truth. Then to invest everything into God, every last breath.

The average person does not do that. Most people live and so so "maybe I'll get married, have some kids, and then I'll travel and have a nice car and house, yeah, I'll do that, just want to enjoy life, you know". But this line of thinking is why we have debt slavery and wealth disparity and widespread corruption as everyone accepts the status quo in exchange for a comfortable life. In one day, speak to 200 people. How many of them are fully engaged in striving towards God and nothing else? A vanishingly small fraction. We have many people striving for God and their sect/affiliation/agenda of choice. Not many for God alone.

                    Please don't be offended by how i may explain it,but;

Saying God God and God doesn't carry much of a weight at all, it is the doing that is more in line with God God and God.

                    Or in other words;

what someone does is more important than what someone says.

So my quistion is what on earth did Abraham do that is so credible to give him the status quo of being a leader of men.

                    With no disrespects to him.

                    peace

                      Salaam 357 and IAMOP,

3845-47 does not say that Ibrahim was noble. I have already quoted 4913 in my previous post.

                      1770
1770 And We have certainly honored the children of Adam and carried them on the land and sea and provided for them of the good things and preferred them over much of what We have created, with preference.

Please look at the word "karramna", its derivative is used in 4913, and I don't really know how translators translates it differently.

What I personally understand from Ibrahim's example is ... 2135 it means "...and he did not become of the polytheists." and he was "hanifa" means "cutting of all and making himself only one sided", this also refers to not doing shirk.

You will find this in AlQuraan ONLY about Ibrahim also in 6161 about not becoming mushrik and 367, 395, 4125, 16120, 16123 for him being hanifa.

Did not become of the polytheists are very important to understand. You can imagine, why the same thing is not used for other prophets or messengers! This will show you that from the very beginning he turned towards Allah alone. He did not even hold of prophets or messengers before him, as it is not required. Hope you get my point inshaAllah.

Brother IAMOP, we don't have to see other people, but we have look for ourselves, how we can strive hard to towards God.

                      Brother 357 thanks for clarification.

Ibrahim was not made "imam for men" on the basis of his good deeds as per 2124, but after he completed his "ibtalaa" and then he was made imam. This is how I understand.

Sorry i havn't followed this thread for a while.

Do you have any examples of him where he refused to do shirk which was for humanity a prime example, the most vile form of shirk still blatantly carried on in this world, to which he was a prime contrarian??

                        hmm

There are over 70 verses in the Quran that discuss Abraham, he is also mentioned in the bible.
you have some studing and reflecting to do.

Ibraheem is "The reference" for us all , because after Ibrahim, came the religions, Yahud, Nassara, also Sunnah shia etc... , therefore, to go to the truth , you have to go back to the reference , Ibrahim wasn't a Yahudi, nor Nassrani , and also for sure, he wasn't a sunni nor a shiaa
therefore, allah chose him as the MARK or the REFERENCE, to counter all LIES and Forms of Religions

Ibrahim believed after a research he made, worshiped a star, the sun, the moon, and he took his mind into the search, and found the truth and became the reference

Because Abraham was the very first man to make the shift in thinking, from a "bicameral mind thinking" infected with falsehood and "mysticism" that was in use and practice before him, to the integrated and abstract way of thinking. Therefore, G-d promised him the holy descendants and offspring.

But Moses is the greatest of all mankind because he deserved to receive the Torah and G-d's Comandments, and he was the very first man to teach and proclaim the monotheism and started the slow process of civilizing the humankind.

Afterwards Jacob, Isaak and others also did not deserve to receive the Torah because of various mistakes they made. That's why Moses is the greatest of all mankind because he deserved to receive the Torah and G-d's Comandments, and he was the very first man to teach and proclaim the monotheism and started the slow process of civilizing the humankind.

                                As-Salaam Alaikum,

The Qur'an does not mention ANY of the Prophets disobeying Allah, you shouldn't attribute falsehood to any of the Prophets (may the peace and blessings of Allah be on them all).

Abraham was also given scripture anyway, the Scrolls of Abraham that the Qur'an mentions.

I am not sure, but tradition has it that the Scrolls of Abraham is actually the Sefer Yetzirah (The Book of Formation) which belongs to Jewish Kabbalah, and is called Book of Abraham. (It is highly esoteric). Perhaps the Qur'an might be referring to that...

                                      Greetings and Peace, all group

                                      Salaam 357,

No aayaats? If, people think Ibrahim's was given a very noble status without AlQuraan's evidence, it has nothing to do with the fact.

                                      Did Allah say that? hmm

                                      mmKhan

AQ 4125 comes to mind immediately.

4125 And who is better in the system than the one who submits himself to GOD, and he is a good doer, and he follows the creed of Abraham in monotheism? And GOD took Abraham as a friend.

This Ayat always fills me with wonder and awe. Seriously, I just wiped away a tear.

However, we are not to make distinctions (4152 for instance) between Prophets (peace upon them all). 492 instructs one instance of proper conduct around a Prophet. It seems that "just" being a Prophet is high status in itself!

492 O you who believe, do not raise your voices above the voice of the prophet, nor shall you speak loudly to him as you would speak loudly to each other, lest your works become nullified while you do not perceive.

                                      ALLAH knows best.

                                      peace

                                      ~Abdul-Hadi

Yes, it's of no point to elevate one messenger/prophet above another. What purpose would that have anyway? Since we are not supposed to worship them, ranking them is useless. BUT, we may of course look and see what the quran says about them so that we may derive some insights about what they promoted, their message and deen.

                                        peace!

mmkhan is as usual misguiding others

Ibrahim (AS) hold very noble status in Islam and for Muslims/Momins

And who is better in religion than one who submits himself to Allah while being a doer of good and follows the religion of Abraham, inclining toward truth? And Allah took Abraham as an intimate friend 4125

Indeed, Abraham was a leader, devoutly obedient to Allah , inclining toward truth, and he was not of those who associate others with Allah 1620

He is one of the most important character of history also, the historians call him father of main religons on the earth.
