    Peace, everyone.

I'm new to Islam and have a quick question. Regarding praying, "praying" is what I call it and that's what I've been doing. So, what is meant my du'a? I figured salat meant praying, does it?

    Thanks for any clarification.

THANK YOU FOR SITE, LOVE IT.

      Salaam,

I know about that although I would not say du`a while not dressed oops

I do not think you need to be embarrased before Allah of whether you are naked or not. We were created without clothes. Even if you do wear clothes and call out to Allah you are still naked before Allah because Allah sees all things.

Regarding praying, "praying" is what I call it and that's what I've been doing. So, what is meant my du'a?

Du'a is the equivalent of prayer, calling out to Allah. Check the ayaat I had given before and compare.

      Joe

You are looking in the Quran that which is not there, but what you are practicing is also not in the Quran.

Im afraid I dont understand you here.

Why dont you search in the Quran for the three times and names of the prayers and its method of offering.

I searched for it; I found it quite a while ago but I think I dont have to prove you so. During the past weeks I was engaged with the Salat and since I was thinking all what Ive learnt over (the Sunni-way) I questioned the Ischarb/headscarf.

Yes, Joe you are right and I know what you mean. My intellect may tell me so. But nevertheless education has left traces in my personality, if you know what I mean. This is a question of how is your relation to your body. I think women do have much more an unfree, ashamed relation to their body since it was told us that so many things are "haram" and "aeb" , "shameful". The second aspect why I will not mention Gods Name while beeing naked is respect. In my understanding it is not respektful to mention His Name or make Dua while beeing not dressed. But those two aspects belong together propably.

Warda, who do you think made us? God, right? Don't you think God knows how our hair look like? God sees us all the time. Traditionalists being as stupid as they are ask women to cover their hair while praying, is it because women are tempting God and angels now?

Of course, I asked myself this question too (not who made us but why to cover my hair when praying to my Creator). And I was asked it from my non-muslim friends a lot. I must admit that I followed just the way it was told me to follow. When I started to make Salat I questioned a lot of things (headcover, menstruation, invalidation of Wudu,times,...) but answers were always its like this, its written here and there. And in all of the literature I own it is written that we are to cover our head. And instead of taking the Quran and searching for the answers I believed them. Sometimes I got frustrated and sometimes I did Salat just my way.

First it was objectivfying us telling the the men would triple at the site of a hot mama, now the same applies to God???? YUCK!!!!
          roll ?

I don't think anyone is suggesting to make an effort TO PRAY while naked, they're just using the extreme of nakedness to make the point that dress doesn't matter.

Yet, you don't have to go to any extremes to make sure every bit of skin is covered.

It even says in the Quran that on judgement day we will stand before Him as bare as the day we were created. We have nothing to hide from God and he's not ashamed of His creation.

              Salaam Warda,

Then perhaps now is as good as any time to unlearn what you have learned. Take the good things and throw out the unnecessary things that are not true.

Welcome to the Forum and congratuations on being a new Muslim.

As with a number of quranic terms there is some discussion over the precise meaning (lets say translation!) of the word Salat. Some people here talk about it as a contact-prayer, or "learning-connection". Other will use the term 'congregational prayer' or simply "Assembly." It has been a long-standing and wide rangeing debate on this site and I don't pretend to be able to articulate the various shades of opinion that have been expressed - but hopefully the above will give you some idea.

Dua is taken by most people to also mean prayer and its translation is less contentious. For myself the closest English word would be 'supplication'. I'm sure others will be able to offer their views on this - my own understanding is nothing more than that!

peace bro, May the God bless you

with regards to being veiled while praying, i only wear it because i feel uncomfortable not wearing it, due to my upbringing. to my knowledge, there's no quranic basis for it. however, i think it's important to wear one in the masjid out of respect for muslim culture- in the same sense that it would be "improper" to wear white to a funeral.

                          Prayer is asking only Him.
Salat is Purifying the Mind sothat it is in touch with Allah always.
Clothing including head-scarf for prayer and salat is ritual; what we require is Fear for Him and lowering of Gaze, during prayer and salat.
Prayer can be done even in bathroom.
Salat is keptup while in distress and thereafter without letup, anywhere and anytime; everywhere, all time!

I used to pray when I first converted, but now I never do (the way muslims do), and it is because when I put on the hijab, I feel unsettled and filthy. It is difficult to concentrate on worshipping God when you feel this way. The whole issue of hijab to me seems illogical and unfair, both qualitites that do not belong to the God I believe in.

If you say it is to protect women from men who are not her husband, and I am praying with my husband, then why put it?

Then the argument comes about the djinn...okay, but then if the djinn are with us, would not the woman keep the hijab at all times even when she is alone at home, just in case some nasty horny djinn is peeping?

And finally, if it is an issue of respect and submission to God, which I would totally do if I believed it was, then why not also the men? Are men not also to show humility and submission?

I've raised the same questions this thread explores, for the past ten years, without ever knowing there was a group like this. I've wanted to pray, but have insisted on praying my own way, without hijab. And I do, quite often. Yet, I was missing the peace and stillness that I used to feel while praying a bit more ritualistically (in between adjusting the scarf on my head).

Now that it is Ramadan and I am more focused on my spirituality, I'm driven to pray again, and I guess, like some others have said, have been conditioned enough to be afraid my prayers won't be accepted - even though that's the silliest thing I've ever heard when I think about it logically. The biggest worry I have is that my rejection of the hijab is really just me being prideful - that I am resisting submitting the way God has asked me to. Yet, I've searched and searched, and it's just not there. If I could read where it said it was necessary, I would do it. But as it stands, it sounds to me like it's a manmade rule - and more importantly, something people focus on instead of the main purpose of prayer, which is to worship.

I just think that God knows what is in my heart. And if my heart is calm with my hair pulled back in a ponytail so I can focus on God, He'd rather that than if my heart was in a jumble of confusion and doubt with my head all covered up.

But man, it sure is a steep hill to climb when all the muslim women you know disagree with you.

Anyway, that's my ramble...I just had to reply because this is the topic I was searching for that brought me to this sight to begin with. It seems like such a petty topic in the grand scheme of Islam, but so much importance is placed on it, that it has caused me great stress.

If the point of headcover is to cover up from men, then what would that have to do with what you do for Allah when you worship? He knows you inside out anyway, so as long as you are dressed modestly. It's not like male messengers are looking down on you and we're not praying for them.

Allah has already specified advice for dress code for women in the Quran in case you are worried.

In salat and do'a we are often speak out about our most hidden feelings and when we let go off them we can say we becomes naked.

But I think we shall put on clothes that we feel free and fresh in when we perform salat, that will probably help us to come in right mood.

Someone wrote do not confuse salat and prayers??well my 1st question is what's the difference between these two?

My second question is do u feel really at ease when not covering your head with a hijab?coz frankly I cant..nor will i be able to concentrate..am gonna feel something is missing from me,really..u might find it funny though

                                      Fee Amanillah,
                                      Sister Soraya..

                                      salam sister Soraya,

I think that person who wrote salat and prayers was meaning don't confuse salat and do'a. Salat is performed on fixed times but do'a you can perform anytime you want.

To wear an hijjab can become as an habit and we all know that habits are difficult to get rid of. Only if we are sincere enough to end an habit we more easily will be able to do it.

I was wearing an hijjab during 8 years of my muslim life and I really wanted to take it off. It was difficult because I thought people would look at me and undress me and question me for not wearing it. But finally I felt more secure and happy without it.
But it took longer time to stop use the hijjab while perform salat because that had became a real habit for me and actually i felt so clean and pure while wearing that long white praying clothes.
Now I feel better and I also feel closer to God when not hide myself behind a veil, and we can never hide from God anyway so it's useless to practise such a ritual with special clothes.

The salat is about reaching out to God and it's benefits is for ourselves not for God.

                                      Maria
