    Peace

Is there any set rule where the singular and plural will be used for the word sanat?

Here for seven years plural form sineena is used

1247 Qala tazraAAoona sabAAa sineena daaban fama hasadtum fatharoohu fee sunbulihi illa qaleelan mimma takuloona

1247He said, "You will plant regularly for seven years, and whatever you harvest you must leave it in its pods, except for the little that you will eat."

Here for forty years singular form sanatan is used

526 Qala fainnaha muharramatun AAalayhim arbaAAeena sanatan yateehoona fee alardi fala tasa AAala alqawmi alfasiqeena
526He said, "Then it has become forbidden for them for forty years, and they will be lost in the land." Do not be sorrowful over the wicked people

    Peace

    Abdullah

I am still researching on the mystery of Arabic grammar. But if you have a definite number and then the noun it does not need a plural form as the seven is marking this condition. You use plural marker when you need it for the continuous narration, for example seven year them and the T is like a word itself even if a plural suffix marker. But it is likely only true if you are to give a particular kind of attribute to the years or else you would keep it like this and add another conjunction instead.

It is the same in Persian where if you have six dogs then "shish-ta sag" without any plural marker. However if you refer to the dogs indefinitely then you need plural dogs "sag-ha" or you can refer to shishta sag definitely without plural.

In the second example the narration continues without giving a conjunction so years is getting an attribute. So forty year them .. bla bla. There is no "and" such as seems in the translation you provided.

        Peace

The Arabic rule is PLURAL from THREE to TEN and from ELEVEN onward it is SINGULAR

See the verses of DAY, NIGHT, MONTH, SPRING, STAR, LEADER, TRIBE, GRAIN and you will find the same pattern of SINGULAR and PLURAL

This rule helped me to discover the real meaning of AYYAME MADUDAT during HAJJ and in fasting verses. (AYYAME THREE to TEN days of fasting MADUDAT DETERMINED by the person who fasts)

        Thanks

            What about this verse?

1825 Walabithoo fee kahfihim thalatha miatin sineena waizdadoo tisAAan
1825 They remained in their cave for three hundred years, and increased nine.

Plural form sineena is used here.

            Peace

              Peace seeking,

If you listened to what I wrote you would understand. In the one you gave example of now there is a conjunction after the word and no attribute.

I have already read what you wrote but could not understand.

Could you please clarify the highlighted part of your above quote?

                    Peace seeking truth

The likeness of those who expend their substance in the way of Allah is as the likeness of a grain that groweth seven ears and in each ear hundred grains and Allah multiplieth unto whomsoever He listeth. Allah is Bounteous, Knowing. (2 261

is SINGULAR used against plural HUNDRED

And they tarried in their cave three hundred years and added nine. (Al-Kahf 25)

Three hundred become singular because of THREE and thus YEARS are mentioned in PLURAL

when you said to the believers, "Is it not sufficient for you that your Lord should reinforce you with three thousand angels sent down? (Aali Imraan 124)

                    THREE singular Malaaikat PLURAL

Yes, if you remain patient and conscious of Allah and the enemy come upon you in rage, your Lord will reinforce you with FIVE (Singular) thousand (Plural) angels having marks (Aali Imraan 125)

Because of singular FIVE the angels are mentioned in PLURAL

                    Hope you understand

                    Thanks

I know, I'm probably retarded, but could you explain that again. I didn't get it. Perhaps I'm just in a brain-low right now.
Could you perhaps give some general, made up, examples in addition to those in the quran.... if you don't mind.
So, what's the relationship number-word to noun now again?

First of all, is it like this?

                      • one day
                      • two dayz (z=dual)
                      • three(to ten) days
                      • eleven(and up) day

Where do the example of the grains, 300 cave days and 5000 angels end up in this?

                      Thanks
                      Peace
