SAYING YA ALLAH IS SINFUL

"Allahum" has been used in al-quran which is the same as saying "O allah".

Actually Farida was correct in that the "O" is the correct translation. The reason "allahum" is used only with "allah" is because the initial "al" is the definite article. In Arabic you cannot attach the calling device "O" (Arabic "ya" directly to a noun with the definite article. This is ungrammatical and in Arabic you have to add the pointing device "ayuha" between the "ya" and the noun with the definite article. So for a example we cannot say "ya alrajul" because it is ungrammatical and to make it grammatical we have to say "ya ayuha alrajul" ( ل (Literally hey you the man). However, using the pointing device "ayuha" is not a respectful way to address someone. So in the case of the god and only in the case of the god, the great reading used the expression "allahum". This all has to do with the rules of grammar when a noun has the definite article attached to it.

At least that is better to say than to exaggerate by saying "it is sinful". We can say "I think it is bad" and give reasoning, but to boldly proclaim "it is sinful" when it is calling to Allah a certain way, might be a bit much, especially if people are saying it out of ignorance and not intending anything bad with it.

Yes, under the assumption that the address is used to draw the attention of the Creator. But is this a good assumption? Just like you say, there is no need to attract the attention of someone who is not unattentive.
So it might be reasonable to believe that perhaps the usage of 'ya allah' (grammatically correct or not) functions as a mental focus for the one who intends to speak his or her heart in a prayer. As such, it is OK, as the intent must be more important than the grammar. After all, language serves a purpose. It's a tool, and not an end to itself. It's purpose and effect is more important than details of its form, or whether or not the words are strictly logical.
It could be equally sinful to use logically correct expressions when our image of the Creator is faulty. Allahum or ya Rabb could be sinful depending on our personal image of Allah or Rabb.

It is incorrect to say "Ya Allah " because of the meaning of Allah. Like saying "O Who is such as It". You do not find the combination "Ya Allah" in Quran.
It is not sinful, but merely ignorant. It is better to use correct terms. One can also say "Oh God" in English.
Ya Rabb is correct. It is the real word for God in Arabic.
