Sorry, forgot to add one more thing. It is quite famous among muslims that "EVERY MESSENGER IS A PROPHET BUT NOT EVERY PROPHET IS A MESSENGER".

    Is that true?

    No, at least to my knowledge. Here's a simplification;

    Message=Prophet
    Message+deliver=prophet+messenger

    Deliver=messenger
    Deliver/=/prophet+messenger

In the last, it's "not equal".

This was confusing. A prophet can be a prophet, or can also be a messenger at the same time. So a prophet can be a prophet and a messenger, or merely a prophet. If a person receives the message from God then he's a prophet. If God wants the prophet to deliver the message, then he's also a messenger.

    A person that is a messenger isn't a prophet and can't be a prophet, unless he's a prophet first.
A messenger delivers the message, but doesn't receive new message from God (such as Torah, Gospel, Quran).

    Salam

      Thanks for your contribution.

In my opinion every messenger is a Prophet and every Prophet is a messenger but people bring following verse to indicate there is a difference. The verse is

And We did not send before you any messenger or prophet except that when he spoke , Satan threw into it . But Allah abolishes that which Satan throws in; then Allah makes precise His verses. And Allah is Knowing and Wise. (52)
      Chapter 22 verse 52

They argued that in this verse messenger and Prophet came separately means there is some difference.

Could anyone please shed some light on it.

      Thanks,
      NK

        Salaam

        Al-Quran has informed us following

        Function of a nabi

Muhammad Asad (The Message Of Quran)
2213 ALL MANKIND were once one single community; whereupon God raised up the prophets as heralds of glad tidings and as warners, and through them bestowed revelation from on high, setting forth the truth, so that it might decide between people with regard to all on which they had come to hold divergent views.197 Yet none other than the selfsame people who had been granted this began, out of mutual jealousy, to disagree about its meaning after all evidence of the truth had come unto them. But God guided the believers unto the truth about which, by His leave, they had disagreed for God guides onto a straight way him that wills .198

        Function of a rasool

Muhammad Asad (The Message Of Quran)
4165 apostles as heralds of glad tidings and as warners, so that men might have no excuse before God after these apostles and God is indeed al?mighty, wise.

When both a nabi and a rasool have same fuction then is it safe to say that they are one and same thing.

Secondly a nabi is one who is given some news and rasool is one who deliver this news. Why would a nabi gets a news to keep it to himself and not to deliver it to others and if he delivers it to others then he becomes a rasool.

        Peace

          Hi all,

What is the difference between Prophet and Messenger?.

Frahai school of thoughts( included Islahi and Ghamidi) has the notion that Prophets are those who only deliver the message and their addresses if they reject their message not bear any punishment. But on the other hand, Messengers are not only delivered message but brings punishment and resulted in wiping out of their addresses if they reject the message knowingly. They call this process "ITMAM HUJJAT". If anyone has read their argument on this topic, then please share your views, if not, then it is available on Al-mawrid website.

This notion leads to a fundamental question that if Prophets and Messengers are two different things (Ghamidi school of thought gives chapter 22 verse 52 as the evidence of the difference between two of them), then can prophets physically be killed?. There are many verses of Quran which state that people had killed prophets but not the messenger. Bible also describes stories of the killing of prophets.

Could anyone help me finding answers of my questions?.

          Regards,
          NK

            The author warns for this
"Choosing the teachings of the scholars above the words of God reflects a disbelief in God and His word (Quran). Against this is a clear warning in the Quran
"They have set up their religious leaders and scholars as lords; instead of God....." 931 "

            But then he/she writes this
"God's Definition of Prophet and Messenger"
And starts explaining how he/she defines them...

They keep with the quran the way he/she understand them and he/she is not God.
Writing articles in this way is imo absolutely not done and misleading.

Besides that the article is full of vague and false claims, like this one
"Those who are not sufficiently familiar with the Quran tend to think that Aaron was a "Nabi" who did not receive a scripture. They claim that the Torah was given to Moses and not to Aaron! This claim can only be made by those who do not believe the Quran, since God ascertains that the Torah was given to both Moses and Aaron (2148, 37117)."
This is simply a lot of nonsense.

Do you mean Moses and Aaron were not given the "Torah" or not given any "scripture"?

If you are saying Moses and Aaron were not given the "Torah" then I agree with you.
However, if you are saying they were not given a "scripture",then I disagree with you. 2148 and 37117 both confirm they were given a scripture.
If you mean something completely different, please clarify.

And starts explaining how he/she defines them...

                      The article says

In 381 God defined the exact duty of the Prophet (Nabi) and also the duty of the Messenger (Rasoul)

"God took a covenant from the prophets, saying, "I will give you the scripture and wisdom. Afterwards, a messenger will come to confirm all existing scriptures. You shall believe in him and support him." He said, "Do you agree with this, and pledge to fulfil this covenant?" They said, "We agree." He said, "You have thus borne witness, and I bear witness along with you." 381

is past tense why it is translated as "a messenger will come" in the article (red part)?
Ayat does not say covenant was taken from "all prophets". It is using which means the prophets and since 375 is starting with people of book is it not that these are prophets of people of book?

                      Just my thoughts.

                      Peace

I can not find any link between Musa and/or Harun and a book called Torah in the quran.

However, if you are saying they were not given a "scripture",then I disagree with you. 2148 and 37117 both confirm they were given a scripture.

There is no book in 2148
If you take alkitaab as scripture then 37117 is indeed evidence that they were given a book.
However, how does such thing work. Lets suppose I am a prophet, then how do I get a scripture, does is fall from heaven in my hands? What do you think?
I think maybe it's a good idea to take kitab a bit more abstract than the traditional definitions.

I think I disagree. I think the word "scripture/book" has nothing to do with both definitions.
I think a messenger is simply someone who is send with "message". (could be anyone, see for example chapter 12)
I think nabi's (prophets never existed) are informed ones to who people go for information.

Scripture is a series of instructions/directives/laws/information/warnings/teachings of the right conduct...etc that are given to a prophet/s over a period of time that is necessary to complete the message that is supposed to be received by the people/community of that prophet messenger.
It can be oral or written down . The whole message, when written down constitutes the "book".i.e a record for the people and generation/s that follow unless GOD chooses to renew the message through another messenger for different reasons( corruption/test/time and place...etc).
"Book" for me means a "record",whatever happens to be recorded. It can be a scripture or "other records".
                            That is my understanding.
                            GOD bless you.
