      Hmm...

You were the one looking for linguistic explanations. I thought start with a simple one. Is that all you want to say?

      Regards,

"Hmm.. " was because I could not find a better emoticon using this mobile version of the forum as it does not show a legend. I would have used "raise eyebrows".

          My 2 cts;

Muslims have chosen name of their religion as Islam. They naively keep claiming its meaning is a religion of peace. Let us check, if their claim stand scrutiny of reason by analyzing this word using rules of the language?

Arabic language words 80-85% are based upon three letter root. Furthermore, words are derived by molding these three letter roots into pre-defined measures. These measures have their own meanings which are added to root meanings. This becomes the resultant derived words meanings

Explained another way, this word derivation is very mathematical. Just like formula 1+ 1 = 2

Now let us analyze word Islam with this background knowledge 101 of the Language.
          its root is
          its measure is
As a root means, he became free from vices.
As a deriving measure means and thereby add following meanings to the root To flee from or runway.

Based upon the formula described as above,
means "departure from being vice free.

The real question is why the hell this name? More importantly why to follow such a religion?
My polite challenge to all is to prove above wrong linguistically.

The ultimate answer to your question should not be linguistic but rather it should be philosophical. Linguistic is merely a tool.

          I noted the various meanings associated with are;

          • safety/security/freedom/immunity,
          to escape,
          salutation/greeting/peace,
          deliver/acknowledge,
          pay in advance,
          submit,
          sincerity,
          humility,
          submission/conformance/obedience,
          resign/quit/relinquish,
          to be in sound condition,
          well without blemish,
          gentle/tender/soft/elegant.
          Solomon/Sulaiman.

Your he became free from vices is not linked to the main context of the whole Quran.

In the context of the whole Quran, the strongest element from the above listing is "submission" which is culminated in the verbal noun as 'Islam' and the one who adopt Islam is a 'Muslim' .

The term 'salam' is a resultant of "Islam."
Islam as a ''religion of peace " is secondary to Islam which main function is 'submission' and all its accompanying results.

"Peace" do not necessary refer to physical peace from external threats but what is more critical in the inner peace on Earth and the hereafter .

Philosophically, the linguistics and the name is not the critical issue here. Note how the names for each chapter of the Quran are derived.
What is critical is the context of the whole Quran, i.e. the intended referent to the reference .

In terms of lexicography, a reference may have much or some linkage to the referent , but it is NOT imperative that a reference must have an association with the referent. Note the word 'gay' used in the present era.

Thank you Bro, for saying the above. This indeed is the key which shows that Muslims have lost it all. Then how would they save themselves from Maut?

Maut is very comprehensive Arabic concept. One of equal concepts in English is death.

Dear all, just wanted to let you know, I made a booboo in translating word Islam. Although, I wish someone else could have pointed it out and I would be joyous to find out that there is someone trying to really understand Quran based upon its language.

                      Regards,

How can one ever point out a mistake in your translations?
Your translations are from a different world.

That might be your perception. But rules given in explanation were not. I made a mistake in meanings of wazaan. Why rules are from other world?

I have no idea what wazaan means.

Because they generate translations from another world.
