        Salaam.

        This might be intresting

There's no shame in admitting that I simply DON'T KNOW. We don't yet have archeological evidence explaining what kind of calendar system Noah and his people used. But I can give you an example supporting the Quran's use of the two non-synonymous terms

Assume, for example, that Noah's people used a system based on 12-day weeks. Hence, each "sanah" is composed of 12 days. 1000 sanah would then be equal to around 83 of our years. Now, 83 - 50 = 33 years. So Noah lived among his people for 33 of our solar years.

So to answer the question Yes, I believe the verse is literal... However, I don't believe that Noah lived to a supernatural age.

        Peace.

        And this

If Noah lived in this area and Age then, this explanation might be interesting.

        source https//en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sumerian_King_List

"The antediluvian reigns were measured in Sumerian numerical units known as sars (units of 3,600), ners (units of 600), and sosses (units of 60)."

          Salamun Alaikum

As per Al Qur'an 29/14, Nabi Nuh lived to the age of approximately 82 years and 3.5 months. This is based on the unit of time of 1000 months less 50 weeks.

          Peace

How do you know for sure that verse 2914 states months and weeks specifically?

            The verse of the Qur'an

The words in question are (of the root sn nn ww, used as sanat) and (of the root ayn ww mm, used as m). Both are evidently different words, yet are still translated as 'years'.

I am not asking this in disagreement, just in wishing to find the truth, and evidence behind your statement. Where does one become 'months' and the other 'weeks'?

            May God grant you peace.

The point is that two different words are used, one after the other, giving a time, and that both are translated as years arbitrarily, because, sicne the bible says that Nuh lived near to a thousand years, who is the Qur'an to say something different, so years plus years, for two different words.

Just that should make us smell a rat.

So whot to make of the sinin?

              Here it comes

              10.5
He is the One who made the sun an
illuminator, and the moon a light, and
He measured its phases so that you
would know the number of the months
and the calculation. God has not
created this except for truth. He details
the signs for a people who know.

The moon is the one that has phases, not the sun, and the moon not the sun is the one that allows to count months on sight, not the sun.

In this translation that I have quoted originally it says "so that you
would know the number of the years"

I have changed the years into months, so you see that it makes perfect sense. Phases of the moon are not needed nor very useful to count solar years, which we can count perfectly by following the repetion of the movement of the sun, how long it takes to repat them and all that.

              Salaam

There is difference between solar and lunar year. A solar year is calculated based on the movements of the sun, whereas a lunar year is based on the movements of the moon. The difference in the period between a solar year and a lunar year is called an epact. One epact is 11 days.

                And indeed We had sent Noah towards his nation;

Whereupon he lived among them for a thousand lunar years save fifty solar years.

For reason/in consequence of contradicting him flood seized them while they were persistently evil doers.

                Word is disambiguation for .

It is a bit absurd to formulate something like a thousand lunar years les 50 solar years.

It is perfect make sense if one change years to month in 105. What about ""?. Is it same as "Years"?. If yes then 1000 months minus 50 years?. That is what you want to say.

My apology if i understood wrong.

                      No you understood it right.

I find this explanation to be logical and in agreement with Qur'an. I also think that God when something is extraordinary does point it out. I do not think he would have passed a person liing 1000 years or around without pointing it out. It is was a gift for Nuh he would have pointed it out.

                      Salaam

Isn't it not unusual way of describing some one's age?. Why did God not tell us in a simple way that Prophet Nuh lived among his people 33 years?. Also in Quran for month the Arabic word used was "" then why God used a word which is not common?

It is not disagreement from your point out of view. Just curious that it must be a word in Arabic for 33 years.

It depends because Arabic today is not the same as Arabic used in Al-Quran.

It is true that Arabic at the time of Prophet Muhammad(PBUH) was different then current Arabic but still in the Quran no where for month God used the word "Snna". Is there any example from classical Arabic that "Sunna" is also used for month?.

Also for my interest, do you know what kind of calendar Arabs was using at that time?. If they were not using any particular calendar then it make sense that for day they use Sun and for month, moon.

In my opinion the word "Snna" used in the same way as the word "Yum". Yum doesn't mean a day but it could be a particular length of time, epoch. In the same way "Sunna" could be a day, month or year. It is my opinion but I could be wrong.

Huruf, I understand that the "1000 months less 50 years" (Noah lived for 33.25 years) makes a lot more sense than "1000 years less 50 years" (Noah lived for 950 years). I was just seeking a justification from almarh0m for their usage of it. I do believe it to be more probable, but I have failed to see the reasoning from the Qur'an itself to support it.

This is why I was asking how (of the root sn nn ww, used as sanat) became 'months', and how (of the root ayn ww mm, used as m) remained 'years'. I was seeking a translation, and the different meanings, of both words, which are blatantly different, yet still translated as either 'year' or the plural 'years'.

                                  May God grant you peace.

I think you may be you can do some more research seeking the roots int he Qur'an by means of one of the tools we have. I would like to do it but I have other heavy demands on my research time and this question is not the most pressing for me.

However on a first consideration,I see something tricky in the question.

The plural sinin behaves as if it should come from a root s-n-n while the singular sanat is considered to derive from a root s-n-w and the meaning of the roots-n-w itself (to gleam, shine, be resplendent ..) apparently does not point to anything useful except that if we cling to a meaning of time measure it would point to a solar aspect because with the sun what we can measure on plain sight and on a basic scope would be days or years, months would be far more elusive.

I would not dare say anything further on it without a proper study.

Also, in general, although mostly right, not all roots that we are given in previous literature or in tools are infallible. For different reasons some are glaringly inapropriate.

I wish you luck with your research which if you do it, will certainly be appreciated.

                                    Salaam

                                      Salamun Alaikum.

Does anyone here really believe that Allah ever created " Human Being" that lives for hundreds of years? Or does Allah use two words to mean exact same thing such as sanat and aam?

Allah and his messenger repeatedly say in AQ that sunnaTullah never change? AQ 17/77, 35/43 and 48/23. Even if Allah means Sanat = Solar years and aam as Lunar years.....the age of
prophet Nuh is still amount to hundreds of years as the difference between solar and lunar year is only roughly 11 days.

Above all that, there is no historical evidence that so far indicate that ancient human beings lived longer than their contemporary. All we need is to look at the the list of kings of ancient Egypt and sumeria which is verifiable through archaelogical find and we can see the years of each king's reign and how long each of them lived on this earth. By the way, Prophet Nuh in the Qur'an has nothing to do with Noah of The Bible, Old Testament and New testament are not The Taurat and Injil.

                                      Peace
