Regarding the verses...
4410 Therefore, watch for the day when the sky brings a profound smoke.
4411 It will envelope the people; this is a painful retribution.
4412 "Our Lord, relieve this retribution for us; we are believers."The 'smoke' is I believe a prophecy about a worldwide viral pandemic which will affect the populations around the world. A candidate is a mutated form of the bird flu that is striking people on an individual basis recently.
The disease is very lethal, and currently is transmitted only from birds to humans in isolated cases. If the virus mutates it will be able to infect people via other people. This will be a worldwide pandemic killing millions upon millions.
The 'smoke' relates to ill natured particulate matter - this I believe would be the description that might be given 1400 years ago to describe a viral pandemic. The virus is transmitted via droplets in the air if person to person - and brought to continents via birds flying. More commonly nowadays viruses are brought into countries via aeroplane travel. Viruses that arrive quite obviously from the sky.

In my opinion the chastisement of dukhan/smoke/hunger, is one where God straitens what men believe they lord over . He, God, gives life , that is, whatever you need to be maintained physically, mentally, on whatever level. He also gives death , the cessation of these things.

I take this symbolically. It is something that always happens, not some epidemic that will happen once. If we take it as some epidemic, the people 1400 years ago never saw this fulfilled so it was USELESS to them, and the God's message is never useless, none of it.
The sun repersents your WILL, the day time is your consciousness, the nightime is the subconcious, the earth is man. The smoke will block out all of the heavenly bodies(lights), meaning we will be blind in regards to our will (sun), so we will just be followers and not LEADERS. The wicked will be in control while mankind will be in a fog, helpless. I see this day clearly right now.
"...and darkness shall cover the earth...."
