Is It Worth it? Taking Off my Scarf Sneaking
-
As Salaam Alaikum,
I'm absoloutly sure that once I finish with high school I will uncover my hair.
I've talked to my mother about this and she knows. One day we were talking about it, and she got tired of me complaigining and basically said
"Well do what other people do. Just take it off when you go to school, and put it back on when you come home so ur dad wont see you"
Of course all of the "likelies" weigh in my favor. My dad hasn't come up to my school in years. He doesn't know anyhting about my teachers, classes, etc.
The new semester is about to begin and I am weighing should I go about and sneak and take it off at school. Or maybe should I start next semester? In 12th grade?
I mean, I already know, after graduation, entering college, I wont be wearing a scarf over my head at all. But I'm wondering is me taking it off now, really worth me being sneaky about it.
And NO, I can't just be like "Dad I'm taking off my scarf". He's already thown a fit at the suggestion.
What is your opinion?
I know that poeple are sick of hearing about khimar, hijab, etc... but it's an issue whether people like it or not that affects millions of Muslim girls. So just deal with it.
I mean I don't think that right now I'm desperate to take it off, though it has affected me and I find myself thinking about it so much that I'm just exhausted over it. I can do another year and a half of wearing it.
What is your opinion? Do you think that being sneaky about it is worth it?
salaam

Peace NP,
I can assure you at 16 that you are best off not rushing things too much. There's plenty of time ahead and your independence as a person and woman is an inevitable fact.
It will happen, and there's nothing to gain from rushing it.
I would honour your parents and not upset them unnecessarily if you have it clear in your mind and what you are doing is not harming you.
You will know the time when it comes. You might want to get different scarfs to indicate a change and tie them differently perhaps using it as a fashion element for a time (like the Pakistani style - where thin veils and some hair is allowed to escape for example).
Hope that helps, but don't rush it as you have a good head on your shoulders and things will happen in due course.
Regards.

Peace,
I think the best advice given was already done so by Layth, and I Second everything that he has said........
Peace,
Your best course might be to discuss the matter with your father...Let him show you where God told women to cover their hair.
If he cannot show you conclusive proof, then he should understand that you will follow God and not tradition.
Salaam,

Peace Sister Progressive,
)
I think it would be wise to confront the situation head on with truth instead of attempting to deceive you father as you were decieved into believing you had to wear it in the first place. Truth will alway defeat falsehood. You would want to avoid the ugly back lash if you got caught. oops Don't make things worse by sneaking. Discuss it with him like Layth suggested. wink
Peace,
Shirley

Hmm ok then.
Well anyway this sister is in a hard situation because she has the scarf on already... As Layth and others suggested you could ask for proof in the Quran.
Depending on your situation you could say my mother didn't wear hijab untill she was whatever age it was that's if she was older then you when she wore it... make them feel guilty in other words, though not such a good idea they're your parents so I'd say go with Layths suggestionMa salama good luck

Peace sis NP,
I also think the best way is following bro Layth's advice. But be prepared to reason and make sure you have verses to back you, otherwise you'll only provoke your father.
