sex with the captives?
-
Salaams Agent,
In the following two ayah?s the same words are translated differently , in one they say sex and in the other guarding chastity and thus both should be the same ;from free minds you have already seen their trans.
Waallatheena hum lifuroojihim hafithoona
And those who guard their chastity,
30.
Illa AAala azwajihim awma malakat aymanuhum fa-innahum ghayru maloomeenaExcept with their wives and the (captives) whom their right hands possess,- for (then) they are not to be blamed,
Waallatheena hum lifuroojihim hafithoona
Who abstain from sex,
6.
Illa AAala azwajihim awma malakat aymanuhum fa-innahum ghayru maloomeenaExcept with those joined to them in the marriage bond, or (the captives) whom their right hands possess,- for (in their case) they are free from blame,
You said ?please explain what is meant by "those who are their dependent"??
Brother ayman did an explanation which seemed quite good

Peace mz,
BROTHER AYMAN DID AN EXPLANATION WHICH SEEMED QUITE GOOD
http//www.free-minds.org/articles/quranic/malak.htmThanks mz, it is very interesting but the translation of brother ayman is not compatible with any other English/urdu interpretation that I have seen. All other interpretations are compatible in essence even though they might have used different words.
?? And do not coerce your immature/(family protected) women on the unlawful/non-consenting seeking (of non-consentual marriage), if they wanted self-protection (from arranged marriage), to seek the low life's vanities, and whomever coerces them, then God after they have been coerced is forgiving, merciful.? (2433)
translation of 2433 by others
2433. and do not compel your slave
girls to prostitution, when they desire to keep chaste, in
order to seek the frail good of this world's life; and
whoever compels them, then surely after their compulsion
Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.2433.. And force not your maids to prostitution, if they desire chastity, in order that you may make a gain in the (perishable) goods of this worldly life. But if anyone compels them (to prostitution), then after such compulsion, All?h is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful (to those women, i.e. He will forgive them because they have been forced to do this evil action unwillingly).
2433..Force not your slave girls to whoredom that ye may seek enjoyment of the life of the world, if they would preserve their chastity. And if one force them, then (unto them), after their compulsion, Lo! Allah will be Forgiving, Merciful.
2433..But force not your maids to prostitution when they desire chastity in order that ye may make a gain in the goods of this life. But if anyone compels them yet after such compulsion is Allah Oft-Forgiving Most Merciful (to them).
Traditionally, the word ?BaGhA?a? has been interpreted to mean prostitution. However, the word?s literal meaning is to seek beyond what is lawful/consentual.
All others who translated quran must have been familiar with the other meanings of the word ?BaGhA?a? so I wonder why all struck with the traditional meaning ?prostitution??
In the verse 2433 forgiveness is mentioned for those who have been forced to commit something bad, so I think the traditional meaning of the word ?BaGhA?a? PROSTITUTION seems more logical then forced arranged marriage.?And those who do not find marriage should refrain/be chaste until God enriches them from His blessing, and those who seek the (marriage) contract from those your oath possessed/(your adopted children), so make contract with them, if you knew goodness in them, and give them from God's wealth which He gave you...? (2433)
translation of others
2433..Let those who find not the wherewithal for marriage keep themselves chaste until Allah gives them means out of His grace. And if any of your slaves ask for a deed in writing (to enable them to earn their freedom for a certain sum) give them such a deed if ye know any good in them; yea give them something yourselves out of the means which Allah has given to you.2433..And let those who cannot find a match keep chaste till Allah give them independence by His grace. And such of your slaves as seek a writing (of emancipation), write it for them if ye are aware of aught of good in them, and bestow upon them of the wealth of Allah which He hath bestowed upon you.
-
And let those who find not the financial means for marriage keep themselves chaste, until All?h enriches them of His Bounty. And such of your slaves as seek a writing (of emancipation), give them such writing, if you know that they are good and trustworthy. And give them something yourselves out of the wealth of All?h which He has bestowed upon you.
-
And let those who do not find the means to marry keep
chaste until Allah makes them free from want out of His
grace. And (as for) those who ask for a writing from among
those whom your right hands possess, give them the writing
if you know any good in them, and give them of the wealth of
Allah which He has given you;
There are two types of family relations in the Quran
- ?Ulu al korba? Those related to you biologically.
2 ?Ma malkat aymanukum? Those related to you by your oath. In the case of a single man this is the oath of engagement to marry. In the case of a custodian this is the oath of adoption or financial support.
The word ?except? in the verse logically implies that ?ma malakat aymanukum? is a subset of ?mohsanat?
All women are ?mohsanat? or protected. They can be protected in two ways, either by their own maturity (self-protected) or by their parents.IN THIS CASE, SINCE PARENTS ARE ADDRESSED, WHAT IS MEANT BY ?MA MALKAT AYMANUKUM? IS ONE?S ADOPTED CHILDREN.
Fm translation
5. And they cover their private parts.
6. Except around their mates, or those who are their dependants, they are free from blame.
7. But whosoever seeks anything beyond this, then these are the transgressors. The fm translation has used ?THOSE WHO ARE THEIR DEPENDENTS? instead of ?CAPTIVES?, now if the dependents falls into any of brother ayman`s explained category above, then it is ridicules why we are allowed to be naked in front of them. If it does not fall into any of the above category, even then such permission is absurd.
THE ARABIC USED IN THE ABOVE VERSE IS
MA_ MALAKAT AIMA_NUHUMBrother ayman has talked about MIN MA MALAKAT AYMANUKUM, so i am not sure if the ?dependents? mentioned in fm translation falls into brother ayman explanation. I would like someone to kindly explain the meaning of both.
translation by others
235-Who abstain from sex
236-Except with those joined to them in the marriage bond OR (THE CAPTIVES) whom their right hands possess for (in their case) they are free from blame
237-But those whose desires exceed those limits are transgressors.7029-And those who guard their chastity
7030-Except with their wives and THE (CAPTIVES) whom their right hands possess for (then) they are not to be blamed
7031-But those who trespass beyond this are transgressors.you quote
Waallatheena hum lifuroojihim hafithoona
And those who guard their chastity,Waallatheena hum lifuroojihim hafithoona
Who abstain from sex,I think both have the same meanings to be understood, for example if you say, don?t go out when you are naked or you say don?t go out when you are not wearing any cloths, it would mean the same.
-
And those who guard their chastity (i.e. private parts, from illegal sexual acts)
-
Except from their wives or (the captives and slaves) that their right hands possess, for then, they are free from blame;
-
But whoever seeks beyond that, then those are the transgressors;
-
And those who guard their chastity (i.e. private parts from illegal sexual acts) .
-
Except with their wives and the (women slaves and captives) whom their right hands possess, for (then) they are not to be blamed,
-
But whosoever seeks beyond that, then it is those who are trespassers.
BROTHER AYMAN
For example, the expression ?ma malakat aymanukum? has been traditionally translated as ?spoils/captives of war? when in fact the Arabic word for captives of war is ?asra? AND THE PROPHET WAS STRONGLY PROHIBITED FROM KEEPING WAR CAPTIVES (SEE 867).
867-It is not fitting for an apostle that he should have prisoners of war UNTIL HE HATH THOROUGHLY SUBDUED THE LAND. Ye look for the temporal goods of this world; but Allah looketh to the hereafter; and Allah is Exalted in might Wise.
867-It is not for any Prophet to have captives until he hath made slaughter in the land. Ye desire the lure of this world and Allah desireth (for you) the Hereafter, and Allah is Mighty, Wise.
- It is not for a Prophet that he should have prisoners of war (and free them with ransom) until he had made a great slaughter (among his enemies) in the land. You desire the good of this world (i.e. the money of ransom for freeing the captives), but All?h desires (for you) the Hereafter. And All?h is All-Mighty, All-Wise.
As you can see from the above verse the prophet was prohibited from keeping war captives ONLY BEFORE HE HAS COMPLETELY SUBDUED THE LAND. War captives are not totally prohibited.
BROTHER AYMAN
Moreover, slavery is against God?s natural system. Enslaving and raping women during conflict is not an act of righteous people, it is an act of tyrannical people such as the people of Pharaoh (For example, see 249).
Here I agree with brother ayman, in fact that is why I want to know the answer to why sex with the captives was permitted by the almighty.
peace.

peace jm,
thank you for the links.
http//www.quranicteachings.co.uk/ma-malakat.htm?Ma Malakat Aimanukum? is one of the most misunderstood, misused and abused term of the Quran. It is usually taken as to mean ?female slave?. Before we discuss the correct meaning of this term, it must be borne in mind that there is a specific word in Arabic language for female slaves and this word has been used at least twice in the Quran, once as a singular and secondly as a plural have
-What is rightfully yours
Now ?what your right hands possess?, or ?what you rightfully have? or ?what is rightfully yours? or ?what your have? could be any of the following
-Your wife
-Your spouse
-Your servant
-Your possession, or property
-Your slave because ?Ma Malakat Aimanukum? refers to a neutral gender which is applicable to both male or female.
-Your prisoner of warit can be seen that ?Ma Malakat Aimanukum?, may not only refer to ?slave? but also to
-Spouse
-Wife
-Servants
-Prisoners of war
-Subordinates
-What is rightfully yoursBefore we move further, another important word must also be explained. The word is ?AW?, used in the phrase ?aw ma malakat aymanukum?. ?AW? is usually translated as ?OR?. There is no doubt that ?OR? is one of the meanings of ?AW? but as a matter of fact, this word is used in no less than 12 different ways . One of the uses of this word is TAFSEEL, . In other words, ?aw? is also used to add some meaning to the previous word or to explain a previous word or to give some attribute or characteristics of the previous word.
Please refer to 17110. In this verse, there is a phrase ?odAAoo Allaha awi odAAoo alrrahmana?. Note carefully how ?Allah? and ?Rahman? are separated by the word ?aw?. Now here ?aw? does not imply that ?Allah? and ?Rahman? are two different Beings. Without doubt, ?Allah? and ?Rahman? is one and the same Being. ?Rahman? is an attribute of ?Allah?.
Now refer to verses 236 and 7030.
236 Illa AAala azwajihim aw ma malakat aymanuhum fainnahum ghayru maloomeena
7030 Illa AAala azwajihim aw ma malakat aymanuhum fainnahum ghayru maloomeena
In both the above verses, ?azwajihim? and ?ma malakat aymanuhum? are separated by ?aw?. Here it does not mean that ?azwajihim? and ?ma malakat aymanuhum? are two different objects. Actually, they refer to one and the same object. ?azwajihim? ARE ?ma malakat aymanuhum? i.e. ?their spouses? are ?what they rightfully possess?.It is very interesting but it seems to me like playing with a meckano or blocks where every one has a choice to pick different pieces and then join them to give a shape according to their own wish.
In 424, the term ?ma malakat aymanukum? refers to those married women which are wives of the disbelievers . The verse 424 makes unlawful to marry all married women except those married women that have come to the believers as prisoners of wars or emigrants but their husbands are non-believers.
In 43, the term ?ma malakat aymanukum? means ?what you rightfully possess? or ?what you have?.if in verse 43 the term "ma malakat aymanukum" refers to the women explained in 6010 why does it have a gap of 54 suras? i mean why do you have to read/jump 54 sura to find out what Allah meant in sura 43?
In 3352, the Prophet is forbidden to marry any more women in spite of their beauty EXCEPT TO MARRY ONLY THE SLAVE GIRLS OR PRISONERS OF WAR REFERRED IN 6010, to make them part of the family and give them status.
43-If ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly with the orphans marry women of your choice two or three or four; but if ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly (with them) then only one or (a captive) that your right hands possess. That will be more suitable to prevent you from doing injustice.
43-Wa in khiftum alla tuqsitu_ fil yata_ma_ fankihu_ ma_ ta_ba lakum minan nisa_'i masna_ wa sula_sa wa ruba_'(a), fa in khiftum alla_ ta'dilu_ fawa_hidatan au ma_ MALAKAT AIMA_NUKUM, za_lika adna_ alla_ ta'a_lu_.So in this verse by malakat aima_nukum it is meant the slave girls but in other verses it could mean something else? Wonder if Allah is short of words?
3352-It is not lawful for thee (to marry more) women after this nor to change them for (other) wives even though their beauty attract thee except any thy right hand should possess (as handmaidens) and Allah doth watch over all things.
3352-La_ yahil lu lakan nisa_ u mim badu wa la_ an tahad dala bihin na min azwa_jiw wa lau ajabaka husnuhun na il la_ ma_ MALAKAT YAMINUK wa ka_nal la_hu ala_ kul li sai ir raqiba_Lastly I would like to ask why all the other people who have translated stuck to the traditional meaning captives/slaves? It includes the Sunni, Wahabi, Shia translators who hate each other and never let an opportunity pass away without criticizing each other?s translation. They differ a lot in the translation of some of the verses but none of them differ in the translation of the verses under discussion here.
Quran does not speak itself, neither the almighty automatically updates the correct translation and removes the wrong ones The almighty has not devised a way for correct translation, it is up to us, we can translate it in what ever way it seems logical to us and then attribute it to Allah. I wonder will we ever be able to understand the true translation of Quran?peace.

just wanted to share what these mullahs are teaching..
QUESTION 1
In the time of the Prophet (saw), when the muslims would win a war, they
would get booty which would be distributed among the muslims of which were
slave girls. If that slave-girl was still a mushrikah, was it allowed for her owner to
have sex with her?ANSWER
Yes, one is allowed to do so since the rules of normal marriage do
not apply to a slave girlSource http//www.al-islam.org/organizations/aalimnetwork/msg00364.html
Question
Could you please clarify for me something that has been troubling me for a while. This concerns the right of a man to have sexual relations with slave girls. Is this so? If it is then is the man allowed to have relations with her as well his wife/wives. Also, is it true that a man can have sexual relations with any number of slave girls and with their own wife/wives also? I have read that Hazrat Ali had 17 slave girls and Hazrat Umar also had many. Surely if a man were allowed this freedom then this could lead to neglecting the wife's needs. Could you also tell clarify wether the wife has got any say in this matter.Answer
Praise be to Allaah.
Islam allows a man to have intercourse with his slave woman, whether he has a wife or wives or he is not married??.

Salaams and peace ..
During those ages and eras when slavery was an accepted norm in every part of the world, a man was allowed to have sexual relations with his female slave. Even as recently as 250 years ago when slavery was rife in the US, children born to black slave women fathered by their white plantation owners were not termed as illegitimate children. And these children were later also given some inheritance rights.
The Glorious Qur'aan didn't revolutionize this practice by changing it overnight, but it did discourage slavery greatly and freeing a slave is a very pious act in accordance with the values of the Qur'aan. The Qur'aan allows a man to have physical relationship with his slave woman whom he owns, though not against her will. If a man possesses a slave woman, he can either free her or if she continues being his slave, she is lawful for him .. because being a slave of one man, she cannot marry another man without her master's permission. So, if the master does not permit her to marry someone else, he can have her for himself, if she agrees. In all other societies, the consent of a slave girl was irrelevant. But the Qur'aan gave the female slave this right. And of course, the Qur'aan also states various other rules & responsibilities of a man for the well-being of his slaves that are incumbent upon the him.
However, this law only applied in the past. Obviously it is no longer valid because slavery does not exist anymore (at least not officially) in the civilized world today.
Surprisingly enough, there are many Muslim men nowadays who use this concept as an excuse to commit illegal sexual acts with free women. They must know that such acts are downright 'zina' carrying a heavy penalty in the Hereafter.
And Allah knows best.

Mary the copt
"Mary (the Copt) was a Christian slave given to Muhammad 7 AH (628 AD) by the Governor of Egypt, Elmokaukas. Her sister, Shereena, was also given at the same time. Muhammad became intimate with Mary and she bore him Ebrahim, who died in 10 AD. Intimacy took place in the home and bed of his wife Hafsah (daughter of Umar) who was absent at that moment and on the day which was either her or Aysha's turn. When Hafsah found this out and questioned him he promised (on oath) not to touch Mary again if she would keep this a secret, and promised that Umar and Abu Bakr should be his successors. Hafsah, however, did not keep quiet and told Aysha about this event. As a result Muhammad had no dealings with any of his wives for a full month, living with Mary alone". "Der Koran" translated by Ludwig Ullmann, Footnote 2 of Surah 661-2, p. 456 (The complete story is told in the Rauzatu'r Safa, Vol. II, p. 18.At this appropriate time Muhammad was given a suitable "revelation" Surah 661-3,5
Sura-66 (Al-Tahrim)
1?O Prophet! Why bannest thou that which Allah hath made lawful for thee, seeking to please thy wives? And Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.
2? Allah hath made lawful for you (Muslims) absolution from your oaths (of such a kind), and Allah is your Protector. He is the Knower, the Wise.
3? When the Prophet confided a fact unto one of his wives and when she afterward divulged it and Allah apprised him thereof, he made known (to her) part thereof and passed over part. And when he told it her she said Who hath told thee? He said The Knower, the Aware hath told me.
4?If ye twain turn unto Allah repentant, (ye have cause to do so) for your hearts desired (the ban); and if ye aid one another against him (Muhammad) then lo! Allah, even He, is his protecting Friend, and Gabriel and the righteous among the believers; and furthermore the angels are his helpers.
5?It may happen that his Lord, if he divorce you, will give him in your stead wives better than you, submissive (to Allah), believing, pious, penitent, inclined to fasting, widows and maidsAl-Baizawi, (Commentary Vol. II, pp. 340-341), the Qur'anic commentator, gives an explanation of this passage
"It is related that Mohammed was alone in company with Mary in Ayesha's or Hafsah's turn. Hafsah became aware of that and therefore scolded him about it. He declared he had taken an oath, but admitted his unlawful behaviour, therefore these verses descended".
Mizanu'l Haqq, p. 330; (The "Mishkat" names Zainab instead of Hafsah); Mishkat II, p. 680-681
many a Muslim takes grave offense at the above recorded event. To illustrate this, and extract from the book "Namoose Rasool" by Hafiz Muhammad Sawar Qureshi is added
"In Defense of the Honor of Muhammad
Peace and blessing of Allah be on him
One day in April 1978, I was studying Maudoodi's famous commentary on the Qur'an, Tafhimul Qur'an, volume 4. I had to look up something concerning the wives of the Prophet. Suddenly I read this about Mary the Copt (may Allah be pleased with her) '(The Prophet of God) took Mary Qabtia, who had been sent by the Maqauqus (ruler of Egypt) especially for himself. The first three mentioned he freed and married but with Mary he had intercourse on the basis of his having her in his power. It is not proven about her that he freed her and married her' (Tafhimul Qur'an, Vol. 4, commentary on sura al-Ahzab, verse 50, note number 88, pages 113-114).
Such was the effect of this reading on my mind and soul that, without exaggeration, for three straight days I could no longer believe even in the prophethood and messengership of Muhammad (may peace and blessings of Allah be on him). Again and again I said to my friends See and check. Has Maudoodi actually written that about Mary the Copt which I have understood? At my insistence, my friends again and again read the relevant passage and said to me Surely this writings means what you have understood it to mean. The sad fact is that Mary the Copt was a concubine of Muhammad. The conclusion that 'what must not be cannot be' is as false as the supposition that Islam put an end to slavery.

Salaams and peace ..
Yep, I can answer with "a simple yes or no" and more ..
NO, Islam does NOT allow slavery, but at the same time it does not encourage overnight abolition of slavery in a society where this system has been rife for centuries, for that could carry grave risks of creating lawlessness, insecurity and revenge with people going on a rampage misusing their newly found freedom. Therefore, Islam strongly encourages teaching and educating slaves, and whenever the master/mistress is sure that their slaves are ready to lead independent lives, he or she must set them free by giving them a sum of money to start their lives. Coming from a country where the feudal system is rampant in the rural areas, I certainly prefer the strategy of gradual abolition rather than a revolutionary style eradication.
YES, during the days when slavery was an acceptable norm of the society, sex was considered ok with slaves. Not just sex, but almost anything was thought okay with or for slaves. But with the advent of Islam, the dictates of the Glorious Qur'aan brought about many restrictions & positive amendments regarding a master's behaviour toward his slaves .. one of which was that female slaves cannot be forced to have sex if they prefer to preserve their virginity. And of course, not having slaves at all by freeing them whenever possible is nearest to piety as per the values of the Glorious Qur'aan. Besides, the Qur'aan also mentions the freeing of slaves as a penalty for various wrong deeds. It would help a person to atone for their sins in the days when slavery existed.
And Allah knows best, surely!

Marya was a coptic slave presented to the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) by the ruler of Egypt, but she did not remain a slave for long. Soon after she was presented to the Prophet, he freed her and married her legally, just the way he was married to Aisha and Hafsah. This is the fact and it is history. If certain people wish to twist it for their own reasons, that's a different matter.

sis i didnt write it, i just copied and pasted it here
There are so many different version available regarding marya that it is difficult to paint a clear picture. this information is from the link provided by brother shamsul-arefin.Ibn Katheer said
Taking a concubine as well as a wife is permissible according to the law of Ibraaheem (peace be upon him). Ibraaheem did that with Haajar, when he took her as a concubine when he was married to Saarah.
Tafseer Ibn Katheer, 1/383
And Ibn Katheer also said
The phrase ?and those (slaves) whom your right hand possesses ? whom Allaah has given to you? means, it is permissible for you take concubines from among those whom you seized as war booty. He took possession of Safiyyah and Juwayriyah and he freed them and married them; he took possession of Rayhaanah bint Sham?oon al-Nadariyyah and Maariyah al-Qibtiyyah, the mother of his son Ibraaheem (peace be upon them both), and they were among his concubines, may Allaah be pleased with them both.
Tafseer Ibn Katheer, 3/500
The scholars are unanimously agreed that it is permissible.
Ibn Qudaamah said
There is no dispute (among the scholars) that it is permissible to take concubines and to have intercourse with one's slave woman, because Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning)
?And those who guard their chastity (i.e. private parts from illegal sexual acts).
Except from their wives or the (women slaves) whom their right hands possess for (then) they are not blameworthy.?
Maariyah al-Qibtiyyah was the umm walad (a slave woman who bore her master a child) of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), and she was the mother of Ibraaheem, the son of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), of whom he said, ?Her son set her free.? Haajar, the mother of Isma?eel (peace be upon him), was the concubine of Ibraaheem the close friend (khaleel) of the Most Merciful (peace be upon him). ?Umar ibn al-Khattaab (may Allaah be pleased with him) had a number of slave women who bore him children, to each of whom he left four hundred in his will. ?Ali (may Allaah be pleased with him) had slave women who bore him children, as did many of the Sahaabah. ?Ali ibn al-Husayn, al-Qaasim ibn Muhammad and Saalim ibn ?Abd-Allaah were all born from slave mothers
Al-Mughni, 10/441
Islam Q&A (www.islam-qa.com)A slave woman with whom a man has intercourse is known as a sariyyah (concubine) from the word sirr, which means marriage.
This is indicated by the Qur?aan and Sunnah, and this was done by the Prophets. Ibraaheem (peace be upon him) took Haajar as a concubine and she bore him Ismaa?eel (may peace be upon them all).
Our Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) also did that, as did the Sahaabah, the righteous and the scholars. The scholars are unanimously agreed on that and it is not permissible for anyone to regard it as haraam or to forbid it. Whoever regards that as haraam is a sinner who is going against the consensus of the scholars.
Islam Q&A (www.islam-qa.comsis, i think i must show this one to my wife lol

sis i didnt write it, i just copied and pasted it here
There are so many different version available regarding marya that it is difficult to paint a clear picture. this information is from the link provided by brother shamsul-arefin.Okay agent ..
Actually it is just a very simple and straightforward episode, exactly as I mentioned. There's no need to get confused.People keep painting different pictures of everything and in every era. Such gossip is inherent of human nature. But that cannot change the truth nor prevent it from standing out. We just need to be a little perceptive as we go about seeking truth and make sure we acquire it from the proper sources.
Needless to say, this information provided by br. shams-ul-arefin is total nonsense.

thanks all for the answer....
If Quran allowed sex with slaves than its also allowing slavery.....this doesnt sound right to me. A nice excuse to have so many sexual partners...........I dont understand why muslims accuse ppl if they have gf/bf or sex before marriage between couples.
Why dont we just get straight..!!! sex is ok between two person who are willing to share their body with each other thru understanding. Forget abt all these institutional marriage. where is the harm here?
peace

What a 'grand' misinterpretation by a mind doused in ignorance!
" ... Unto us our works and unto you your works. Peace be unto you! We desire not the ignorant." (2855)
Thanks for your comments.
