    Hi Nazz,

Dear, I found the same feelings inside myself as well. I wrote an identical post on my own site, a wise friend told me salat is a period of reflection, done twice a day, or more if wanted. Amount isn't important. It's quality, not quantity that matters.

I don't know arabic, still don't. I cannot verify his claims to other sources, than my own little and limited yet sufficient reasoning. I cannot doubt that reflection indeed is a part of remembering god. I cannot doubt that reflection was what any prophet did. I cannot doubt that reflection is a part of realising our connection to god. I cannot doubt that reflection is highly valued in god's system; islam.

Therefore, on these grounds, I made it manifest unto myself, all these attributes in quran given to salat, must be partly or wholly reflection.

I'm a foreigner to content of quran, I know it only by read-write(hear-say) from the translators. Thus, take not my word on basis of itself, rather if your reasoning matches mine, then I would encourage you to expand on our reasoning. So we may succeed.

I hope this was helpful, in one or another way.

    Nadeem.

My salaam to you all.Well,well,well.........brother nazz,i completely agree with you,i dont speak arabic either, this pisses me off at times. How i do my salaat,is by simply reading the quran,at dawn,at sunset till the darkness of the night,i feel like, by reading the quran, and trying to understand it and apply it to my every day life, this is what is important. In the end i see that your salaat is between you and Allah,so if you think that doing a ritualistic prayer 5 times a day,is the only way for you to remember God,in my view there is nothing wrong with it.As for the bowing prostration,in my view the way its put in the quran, they are not all physical, for the simple fact, that wen it is physical there is always a word before it wich is fall down.....but anyways im just as lost as you are tempt ,and im still looking into it.May Allah guide us all,my salaam to you.

          Peace all,

I am frustrated, annoyed, angry, utterly exhausted and sick to death of the salat issue. I want to shoot myself, no, I want to explode! brickwall

I can not comprehend, why there is not ONE CLEAR translation of the word "salat"!!! WHY for F's sake!? ??

          .....................................
How can it be so hard!!? I speak Japanese and English. Here's a little translation exercise; The word "Horse"(English) <--> "Uma" (Japanese)
There, done. Translated. Now, somebody please kindly do the same for "salat". Look, I'll even start it for you!
          "Salat" (Arabic) <--> "________" (English)
          Fill in the blanks.

I'm wroth... Yeah yeah, and then the Quran tells me, "say, die in your rage" ARGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! flag

Good point, I have same problem for Turkish Speaking people. Lets look at the couple of verses, see if we can fins and answer

"Had we made it a non-Arabic reading, they would have said, ?why are the verses not explained?? Shall we reveal non-Arabic (reading/quran) to an Arab? Say, ?For those who believe, it is a beacon and a guide. As for those who do not believe they will be deaf and blind to it, as if they are being called from afar. We also gave Moses the scripture, and it too was disputed. If it were not for a predetermined decision by your Lord, they would have been judged immediately. They are in great doubt thereof. (Chapter 41 Verse 44-45)

Since God had revealed it in Arabic to Araps, They should at least have a good dictionary that will explain to Non Araps shock

May be the Answer is the the following verse

The Arabs are the worst in disbelief and hypocrisy, and the most likely to ignore the laws that GOD has revealed to His messenger. GOD is Omniscient, Most Wise. (997) ?

It might be an Arap hypocrisy against NON ARAPS.

          I am not a racist

            Peace

I don't have any propblem with the word salat since I was a child really, it means in Arabic "Connection"

and the word is used to describe the connection the slaves suppose to intiate to talk to Allah regarding their personal affairs

regarding how many times a day

well, the more you do it the better for you according to the Quran, but because I'm not that humblling slave, I will follow the prophet in the 5 basic ones, the history records told us about

see, no confusion whatsoever, it is us who bring the confusion to ourselves

            peace

              Salaam,
Nazz, like Ahmed said, Salat means "Connection" or "Contact"; some way of contacting God.

Secondly, I know for Qur'an-aloners such as ourselves, this might be frustrating. But, the beauty of being Qur'an-alone is that the Qur'an is very general and flexible. The Qur'an says it is a complete book, and fully detailed meaning we have to work with what we have. If something is not there (for example how to "Contact" God ), then we can do it anyway we want. God did not assign a specific way to do it. Thusly, we can look at other verses, research, follow any rules in the Qur'an regarding Salat, and shape our own way of Salat.

              Respect and Peace,
              Mind

Cheers Openmind, that's very "open minded" of you. wink

Yeah, that's where I'm at now after a great deal of research and reading, discussion and prayer.

                Cheers.

and I agree.. if there is ONE issue we as a community need to address... it's SALAT.

We've got to get together and ponder over it's meaning and come out with something definitive; so far I'm very tempted to understand it as "commitment" as per Aidid Safar. Some of the verses really start making sense when u apply this meaning but others clearly don't.

Maybe Salat has all it's different meanings in all these different verses.. maybe this is the test for those who 'ponder over the verses' as opposed to the ones who are content being just 'Muslims' and don't wish to achieve the higher status of being a 'Momin' and the hard work that goes with it.

I don't think its "commitment" because how would that fit in with the requirement to do Ablution before "committing"? ?
