    G'day JHamza,

    Have you read this article?
    http//www.free-minds.org/articles/quranic/salat_edip.htm

"You shall observe the contact prayers at both ends of the daylight, that is, during the adjacent hours of the night. . . " (11114)

Traditional translators and commentators consider the last clause "zulfan minal layl" of this verse as a seperate prayer indicating to the "night" prayer. However, we consider that clause not as an addition but as an explanation of the previous ambigious clause; it explains the temporal direction of the ends of the day. The limits of "Nahar" (daylight) is marked by two distinct points sunrise and sunset. In other words, two prayers should be observed not just after sunrise and before senset, but before sunrise and after sunset.

    I especially liked the use of the comparison with the bible;

"As for me, I will call upon God; and the Lord shall save me. Evening, and morning, and at noon, will I pray, and cry aloud and he shall hear my voice." (Psalms 5516-17) (PS crying aloud apparently means praying with passion).

"Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house; and his windows being open in his chamber toward Jerusalem, he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did afortime." (Daniel 610)

    Cheers

From what I've read in two translations of 20130 we are commanded to do salaat at dawn, noon, afternoon, evening, and night. Notice that this ayat does not say the night prayer is voluntary. I recall a voluntary night meditation mentioned in the Koran though.

Does anyone here have to do salaat while at work? How does that go?

            Hello

I'm following the 5 salat as the sunni because this is the most confirmed info that I have regarding Salat, I don't acceot the hadith of 50 salata tgoing down to 5 though because this is just non sense

all people at my work respect my religion and what i need to do to fullfil it, I pray in a seperate room "Zohr" and sometimes Asr if I haven'y gone home by that time, I also scored an agreement with them 4 years ago to take fridays off instead of giving me a pay rise, this will kae free on fridays to do the gathering Salata hpwever I haven't found a mosque that satisfies me with what they say inside to do the salat with them, I just don't want it to look like someting I have to do while inside me can see their flaw in most of what they say, so I pray Zohr instead on fridays

at work they also know that i fight the enemy of Islam online and some of them even watch my movies and they love it despite the rated material or langugae that can be used in'm, Alhamdullelah I have total freedom at work

            peace

              Peace All,
Whats confusing to everyone is the parts of 20130 that says parts of the day or both ends of the day and during parts of the night. Some take this to mean dawn and evening while others see them speaking of different times.

Faisbir AAala mayaqooloona wasabbih bihamdi rabbika qabla tulooAAialshshamsi waqabla ghuroobiha wamin ana-iallayli fasabbih waatrafa alnnaharilaAAallaka tarda

Khalifa Therefore, be patient in the face of their utterances, and praise and glorify your Lord before sunrise and before sunset. And during the night glorify Him, as well as at both ends of the day, that you may be happy.

Yusuf Ali Therefore be patient with what they say, and celebrate (constantly) the praises of thy Lord, before the rising of the sun, and before its setting; yea, celebrate them for part of the hours of the night, and at the sides of the day that thou mayest have (spiritual) joy.

Pickthal Therefor (O Muhammad), bear with what they say, and celebrate the praise of thy Lord ere the rising of the sun and ere the going down thereof. And glorify Him some hours of the night and at the two ends of the day, that thou mayst find acceptance.

Shakir Bear then patiently what they say, and glorify your Lord by the praising of Him before the rising of the sun and before its setting, and during hours of the night do also glorify (Him) and during parts of the day, that you may be well pleased

Sher Ali Bear patiently then what they say, and glorify thy Lord with HIS praise before the rising of the sun and before its setting; and glorify HIM in the hours of the night and all parts of the day, that thou mayest find true happiness.

                Dawn-Fajr
                ?rise in the morning?--- 3017
                ?morning salat?--- 2458
?before the rising of the sun?---20130

                Noon-Zuhr
"when the sun declines from its highest point at noon"---1778
?when the day begins to decline?--- 3018

                Afternoon-Asr/Al Wusta
                "the Middle Prayer"---2238

                Sunset-Maghrib
                "ends of the day"---11114
                ?reach eventide?---3017
                ?'before it?s setting?---20130

                Night-Isha
                ?late-night/Evening salat?---2458
                waAAashiyyan=?and the evening?---3018
11114 Wa (and) + Zulafan Mina Al Layl (during the night)
                "And during the night"---20130

From the above it would appear to be referring to 5 times for Salat, unless you believe 3018 is referring to the Sunset Salat.
But that would leave 4 Salat.Unless you take into account that 2238 refers to al-salat al-wusta the middle salat or the Salat nearest the Center".This would then imply more than 4,hence 5.

                salati alAAisha(al-Isha) in 2458

So if these times all refer to the sunset salat then that would leave dawn/sunrise/morning as 1 and sunset/afternoon/evening/night as 1=2 then we come to 2238 which mentions a middle salat bring us to 3 salats..

Which view is 100% correct I dont have the foggiest idea, thats why I think we all need to learn classic Arabic..to learn what the original language meant and not what modern Arabic means.

What makes it hard is that words may mean more than one thing and everyone and their grandparents have their idea which is correct, one more reason we need to learn classic Arabic.

                  In 399.. it says
Amman huwa qanitun anaaallayli sajidan waqa-iman yahtharu al-akhiratawayarjoo rahmata rabbihi qul hal yastawee allatheenayaAAlamoona waallatheena la yaAAlamoonainnama yatathakkaru oloo al-albabi

Is one who worships devoutly during the hour of the night prostrating himself or standing , who takes heed of the Hereafter, and who places his hope in the Mercy of his Lord? Say "Are those equal, those who know and those who do not know? It is those who are endued with understanding that receive admonition.
Another possible reference to the Night Salat, since salat is worship/devotion to GOD.

Whats the word for night in this?I dont see isha....

                    11114
Wa-this Arabic word is equivalent to ?and? in English.

Zulafan-this word is translated as ?during?

Al Layl-This word means ?the night? in English

Waaqimi (You shall observe) + Al Salaat (worship) + Tarafayin Nahar (at both ends of the day) + Wa (and) + Zulafan Mina Al Layl (during the night)

When we break this verse down, word for word, we can clearly see that it is talking about 3 prayers or 3 times to perform salaat (worship). One of the biggest threat to the proponents of the 3 salaat theory is the Arabic word ?Wa (and)?

Allah is the One who revealed the Holy Qur?aan and He used the word Wa (and) to add an additional time to perform salaat or pray. Let me give you an example in the Qur?aan so that you can see how the Arabic word Wa (and) is used. In Qur?aan 348 Allah used the Arabic word Wa (and) to separate the list of scriptures

                    WayuAAallimuhu alkitaba waalhikmatawaalttawrata waal-injeela
"And Allah will teach him the Book (and) Wisdom, the Law and the Gospel,

"He will teach him the scripture, wisdom, the Torah, and the Gospel."

The scriptures spoken of in this verse (The Book of Wisdom, The Torah, The Injiyl) was separated by the Arabic word ?Wa? which is equivalent to the English word ?and?. Allah have used this same Arabic word ?Wa? right after the phrase ?Tarafayin Nahar {both ends of the day-which is the Dawn Prayer (Fajr) and Afternoon Prayer (Zuhr)}? to add or list an ADDITIONAL time to pray or to perform salaat which is at night (Isha)

Wa Zulafan Mina Al Layl ( and during the night).

Since the phrase Wa Zulafan Mina Al Layl (and during the night) is mentioned in (11114) that means Tarafayin Nahar (both ends of the day) have to be referring to the Dawn and SunsetSalat.

There is no way in the world the proponents of the 3 salaat theory can justify that Qur?aan 11114 is only referring to 2 salaats. They have falsely interpreted that verse and purposely mistranslated that verse below to support their man-made-innovation

Careful examination of that verse in Arabic clearly exposes their false translation and interpretation and did you also notice that they left out the Arabic word ?Wa? which is equivalent to ?and? in English in their translation. They did not bother at all to translate the Arabic word Wa (and) in their so-called English translation, they act like it doesn?t exist.

They know that it would place doubt in the minds of the reader if they left Wa (and) in their English translation; they did not want that dynamic to stick out for the obvious reasons, similiarly how the Sunni Muslims do not leave the Arabic word hadiyth in their English translation. The Sunni Muslims know if they would leave hadiyth in their translations of Al Qur?aan, the people would clearly see that hadiyths are condemned by Allah right in the Holy Qur?aan and will start to question their sectarian teachings that they have been brainwashed with.
The Arabic word Wa (and) is there and it is clear as day light. Again it does not take a rocket scientist to understand the twisted motives behind the proponents of the 3 salaat theory for leaving that word out because they know deep down inside that the Arabic word Wa (and) will undermind/expose the foundation of their argument of trying to deceive the Muslim world into thinking that Qur?aan 11114 is referring to only 2 salaats instead of 3.

Thank you for that. I kind of had the feeling that the five times per day were not quite salaat but rather just praises and glorification.

                        Peace hamza

i have a different understanding and the "wa" doesn't interfere with it. Uphold salat at both ends of the day "wa" near the night, which would pin down the timeframe to dawn and sunset, not a short time after sunrise or before sunset.

On the other hand just now a thought pop's up in my mind - a sura says, as far as i remember, to start maghreb just before sunset roll Guess i have to take the question up again...

another argument that disturbed me at the time was that it is zulafan (three or more) and not zulafain (which would refer to 2) - but even native arab speaker do not come to a clear conclusion, and my idea, if there is a third prayer (and it is not the most balaced prayer) - wusta would be a noon prayer

wasn't it easier the sunni way wink

LOL not sure Elke,I was probably Sunni for about a week..then I began questioning Hadiths etc etc

Actually Elke "Uphold salat at both ends of the day "wa" near the night" would still be "Uphold salat at both ends of the day and near the night" which would still imply atleast the early part of night.

This article sees whether there is any indication of 5 daily salaats in the Quran or not. In 4103, Allah says

Verily, Salaat is a prescribed duty upon the believers (to be performed) at appointed times

Please consider the following references for salaat timings

                            i. Salat-i-Al-Fajar (morning prayer)

ii. tarafay-i- alnnahar (at both ends of the day) (morning and evenings)

iii. Salat-i-Al-Aaisha (early part of the night when it gets dark)

iv. zulafan mina allayli (at nightfall)

                            v. ghasaqi allayli (when it becomes dark)

vi. dulooki alshshamsi (when the sun declines at midday)

                            vii. Alssalati alwusta

i and ii given above indicate FAJAR salaat

                            vi indicates ZUHUR salaat

vii indicates ASAR salaat (in middle of total 5 salaats)

                            ii indicates MAGHRAB salaat

iii, iv and v indicate ISHA salaat

                            {Note in 1778, the particles li and ila are used. These are used in different meanings including in, at (like English at noon, in the mornings, at night, in the afternoon). In 2147, particle li is used to mean AT (the day of resurrection). Similarly, in 612, the particle ila has been used to mean AT (the day of resurrection).}

                              Peace Hmza,

basing myself only on ur above post, one can also see only three prayers

points i ii iii iv v could be indicating fajr and ishaa in different words

vi and vii could be midday

really hamza, i havent taken up the subject yet again, but i am sure that there is not only one interpretation possible

for myself i know that the salat times i really feel are fajr and ishaa, but i will go back to studying once again inchallah

                                Peace Elke,
                                Actually

iii. Salat-i-Al-Aaisha (early part of the night when it gets dark)

iv. zulafan mina allayli (at nightfall)

                                v. ghasaqi allayli (when it becomes dark)

cant be referring to the sunset salat, because once it become dark/night it is no longer sunset..sunset is the time from when the sun goes beyond the horizon until it gets dark..once it becomes dark its past sunset..

                                As for
vi. dulooki alshshamsi (when the sun declines at midday)
the sun begins its decline at noon not at sunset.
                                Sunrise(Day begins)-Noon(Midday)-Sunset(End of Day).

                                and
vii. Alssalati alwusta =middle salat would either imply a noon time salat if there is only 3 but it would imply a afternoon salat if theres 5.

                                and
                                i. Salat-i-Al-Fajar (morning prayer)

ii. tarafay-i- alnnahar (at both ends of the day)
are obvious to any one as we all agree=morning and sunset.

As for the surah that mentions before sunset I have it quoted in a post above,

Faisbir AAala mayaqooloona wasabbih bihamdi rabbika qabla tulooAAialshshamsi waqabla ghuroobiha wamin ana-iallayli fasabbih waatrafa alnnaharilaAAallaka tarda

Therefore be patient with what they say, and celebrate (constantly) the praises of thy Lord, before the rising of the sun, and before its setting;and celebrate them for part of the hours of the night, and at the sides of the day that thou mayest have (spiritual) joy.

                                Before sunrise=between dark and complete daylight,ie.Dawn .
Before sunset=between complete daylight and complete dark,ie.Sunset.

                                Also of mention
before the rising of the sun, and before its setting=dawn and sunset salat.

part of the hours of the night= night time salat.

and at the sides of the day=noon and after noon(why repeat it if this is referring to the same salats as dawn and sunset???????)

                                And dont forget Surah 11114
Waaqimi (You shall observe) + Al Salaat (worship) + Tarafayin Nahar (at both ends of the day=sunrise and sunset) + Wa (and) + Zulafan Mina Al Layl (during the night=after sunset)...
Its specifically says and at night..

And 2458 speaks of one night time salat-salati alAAisha, this also implies that the sunset(maghrib) salat is before it gets night, because it speaks of one salat at night

Ya ayyuha allatheena amanooliyasta/thinkumu allatheena malakat aymanukumwaallatheena lam yablughoo alhuluma minkumthalatha marratin min qabli salatialfajri waheena tadaAAoona thiyabakum mina alththaheeratiwamin baAAdi salati alAAisha-i thalathuAAawratin lakum laysa AAalaykum wala AAalayhim junahunbaAAdahunna tawwafoona AAalaykum baAAdukumAAala baAAdin kathalika yubayyinu Allahulakumu al-ayati waAllahu AAaleemun hakeemun

"O ye who believe! If your servants and those who have not come to ask your permission (before they come to your presence puberty) on three occasions of your un-dress i.e. before morning prayer, then while you doft your clothes for the noon day heat; and after the night prayer"(Al-Quran) 245

Hence 5 times for salat when you compare every Surah..

Also If you compare Surahs 3017,2458,17783018,20130 and 11114 we see 4 salat timesDawn,Noon,Sunset and Night but this leaves 2238-And some argue that al wusta means balanced salat,if it does then we have 4 not 2 or 3 as these same people argue...But al wusta doesn't mean balanced,it means "nearest the center"or in the middle of something..so therefore there has to be 5 salat because 4 doesnt have a middle.

Thank you for that. I kind of had the feeling that the five times per day were not quite salaat but rather just praises and glorification.

                                  Peace AbdulMajid and YW,
The 5 times a day are Salaat=Contact/Communication with Allah(GOD) and yes its worship, glorification, and praising of GOD.Not Dua or regular prayer..is this what you meant?

We should worship and glorify GOD at all times of the day,in our actions, words and thoughts, but yes these are special times that we are to set aside for contact or communication with GOD.

                                    Salamun alaikum JHamza, Elke, all,

                                    QUR'AANIC DAY AND QUR'AANIC NIGHT

I think most of the confusion arises because of the misunderstanding of the Qur'aanic day and the Qur'aanic night. According to the Qur'aan, "day" starts at beginning of dawn and ends at complete darkness. So dawn and dusk are included in "day". Qur'aanic "night" starts at sunset and ends at sunrise. So "night" includes dawn and dusk also. The "day" and the "night" therefore overlap at dawn and dusk. Please see the article at the following link for the Qur'aanic proof of this

                                    http//free-minds.org/articles/science/quranic.htm

Once this is established, it will become easier to find out the timings of "salat" according to the Qur'aan.

                                    QUR'AAN IS CLEAR

Allah says that the Qur'aan is clear and has no doubt in it. It is us who create confusion in the word of The God by trying to find something where it does not exist, due to our preconceived notions. The God willing, we will see that The God is very clear about the timings and the number of salat in the Qur'aan.

Allah clearly uses the word "salat" for salat and not "praise" or "glory". When the Quran mentions salat to be upheld the word AQIMIS SALAH is used, not glorify (sabih) or remember (uzkur), or call (udu'u) or any other imperative. Of course "salat" is for Allah's remembrance and praise but is not the only way of remembering and praising The God. We can remember and praise The God many times a day but lets try to find out how many times a day we are advised to uphold "salat". When The God tells us about the timings and names of "salat", He clearly uses the word "salat" in the verse, and not "praise" or "remembrance".

For that we have to see only those verses which are directly talking about "salat". That eliminates 20130, 3017, 3018 as the "salat" timing verses.

                                    WHAT ABOUT SALAT AL-WUSTA ?

"Salat al- wusta" is WRONGLY translated as the "middle" prayer. "Wusta" is derived from the root "WST". The usage of the words derived from the root WST in the Qur'aan indicates that it always means "best" (589, 6826, 2143). For details, see under the heading of SALAT AL-WUSTA in the article at the following link

http//www.free-minds.org/contact.htm (read this article after finishing reading my post please)

Also if you examine 2238 closely you will find that it supports "wusta" meaning "best" and not the name of an additional "middle" salat.

2238 Preserve/guard the salawaat (plural of salaat), and the best/moderate salat, and stand devoutly for God.

There are 2 proofs from the Qur'aan, that salat al-wusta is not an additional salat

                                    FIRST PROOF

All the "salat" are automatically included in "salawaat"; it does not make any sense to say "and the middle salat" after already mentioning all salat; that would be redundant and illogical.

                                    SECOND PROOF

The word "wa" in the Qur'aan does not always separate 2 different subjects; it has also been used in the Qur'aan to separate two attributes of the same subject or to add explanation of a previously mentioned subject to clarify it.

                                    For example

4113 And God has sent down to you the Book and the wisdom, and He has taught you that which you did not know. God's grace upon you is great.

Here the Book and the Wisdom refer to the same Qur'aan, they are not two different books. So Allah is mentioning two attributes of the same Qur'aan, separated by "wa". The Qur'aan is a book and it contains wisdom. So here the Book AND the Wisdom is not two different books but attributes of the same Qur'aan.

                                    Another example

2148 And We had given Moses and Aaron the Criterion and a shining light and reminder for the righteous.

Here the Criterion is the shining light is the reminder. They are not 3 different books.

So in 2238 when Allah says "guard/preserve the salawaat AND salat al-wusta", salat al-wusta is an attribute of the salawaat, meaning THE BEST SALAT. The God wants that ALL OF OUR SALAT SHOULD BE THE BEST (upheld in the best possible manner). Salat al-wusta is the pattern for EACH salat that a believer should uphold, and here in this verse does not mean another salat.

                                    TIMING VERSES FOR SALAT

That leaves the following verses which UNAMBIGUOUSLY and CLEARLY mention timing of salat

                                    TIMING VERSE 2458

2458 O you who believe, let those who are your dependants and have not yet attained puberty request your permission regarding three times Before the dawn salat, and should you take off your attire from being outdoors, and after the dusk salat. These are three private times for you. Other than these times, it is not wrong for you or them to intermingle with one another. God thus clarifies the revelations for you. And God is Knowledgeable, Wise.

This verse is self explanatory. In Salat al-fajr, the word "fajr" itself means dawn and in salat al-'isha, the word "isha" itself means dusk. So now we have 2 salat, one at dawn, and the other at dusk. So far it is very clear, agreed ?

                                    TIMING VERSE 1778

1778 You shall uphold the salat from the sun's "DULUK", to the darkness of the night, and the Qur'aan at dawn; the Qur'aan at dawn is witnessed.

What is "DULUK" ? This word is mentioned only one time in the Quran. Its root is DLK, which means "to rub or to massage". In this context (177 it means the rubbing of the sun at sunset (the context of the verse suggests that it is at sunset and not at sunrise). This word has been given another meaning (sun?s decline at noon) to confuse the issue but please read the article mentioned above in my post for refutation of that at the following link

http//www.free-minds.org/contact.htm (read it after finishing my post please)

LI DULUKI AL-SHAMSI means the sun's rubbing of the horizon at sunset. With the preposition LI, which means (in this case) just after, the very precise meaning of "li duluki al-shamsi" would be just after the sun goes beyond the horizon. So if we take this meaning then the first part of the verse would be translated as follow

"Uphold the salat from when the sun goes beyond the horizon (after sunset) up to the darkness (twilight)".

The Qur'aan at dawn is synonymous with the salat al-fajr; the most important part of upholding salat is oration of the Qur'aan.

Therefore this verse also confirms the same two times of upholding salat as 2458. So far 2458 is consistent with 1778.

                                    TIMING VERSE 11114

11114 And you shall uphold the salat at the two edges of the day, and the near part of the night. The good deeds take away the bad. This is a reminder to those who remember.

The words "tarafey alnahaar" mean the two ends or edges of the day. "Zulafam minal leyli" is a clarification and specification for these two ends, are they towards the day end or are they towards the night end ? This verse says they are towards the night. Here "wa" again does not mean two different timings but the phrase after the "wa" is a clarifying and explanatory phrase of the phrase preceding the "wa". I already explained this usage of "wa" earlier in my post.

Some people think that the word "zulafan" or "times close to" is in the plural and therefore can not stand for the two ends (dual) but this is not correct. Linguistically, it is correct and very natural to clarify and specify the dual with plural. The Quran in many places uses this combination (see 1675 they are two men but the verb is in the plural)

So in this verse Allah is telling us about the two times where the Qur'aanic night and the Qur'aanic day merge/overlap, i.e. dusk and dawn. (See earlier part of my post for explanation of the Qur'aanic day and night)

This verse 11114 therefore confirms the same two times of upholding salat as 1778. So far we have seen that all three verses 2458, 1778, and 11114 CONSISTENTLY mention the same timings for upholding salat. The only inescapable conclusion of this would be that Allah mentions only 2 timings to uphold salat and mentions only 2 salat by name in the Qur'aan, therefore there are a minimum of only TWO salat to be upheld by believers SALAT AL-FAJR (at dawn) and SALAT AL-'ISHA (at dusk).

Please now read the article at the following link for all the details

There are 5 Contact Prayers/ Salat in 1 day.

                                          (1) The Dawn Prayer (Fajr in Arabic) given in 11114, 2458
You shall observe the Contact Prayers (Salat) at both ends of the day, and during the night. The righteous works wipe out the evil works. This is a reminder for those who would take heed.
O you who believe, permission must be requested by your servants and the children who have not attained puberty (before entering your rooms). This is to be done in three instances - before the Dawn Prayer, at noon when you change your clothes to rest, and after the Night Prayer. These are three private times for you. At other times, it is not wrong for you or them to mingle with one another. GOD thus clarifies the revelations for you. GOD is Omniscient, Most Wise.

                                          (2) The Noon Prayer (Zuher in Arabic) , given in 1778 and 3018
You shall observe the Contact Prayer (Salat) when the sun declines from its highest point at noon, as it moves towards sunset. You shall also observe (the recitation of) the Quran at dawn. (Reciting) the Quran at dawn is witnessed.
All praise is due to Him in the heavens and the earth, throughout the evening, as well as in the middle of your day.

                                          (3) The Afternoon Prayer (Asr in Arabic), given in 2238
You shall consistently observe the Contact Prayers, especially the middle prayer, and devote yourselves totally to GOD.

                                          (4) The sunset Prayer (Maghrib in Arabic), given in 11114
You shall observe the Contact Prayers (Salat) at both ends of the day, and during the night. The righteous works wipe out the evil works. This is a reminder for those who would take heed.

                                          (5) The Night Prayer (Isha in Arabic), given in 2458
O you who believe, permission must be requested by your servants and the children who have not attained puberty (before entering your rooms). This is to be done in three instances - before the Dawn Prayer, at noon when you change your clothes to rest, and after the Night Prayer. These are three private times for you.
