    Peace all. I have looked at the various political systems available to us theoretically and practically...My current opinion is that although democracy has some flaws,it is better than any other current practical or theoretical system available to us...Anybody have any ideas on the benefits/drawbacks on democracy and/or any practical alternatives to democracy?...
    Peace all.

      i think democracy is the best thing we've got. It's not perfect, of course.
      it needs to keep improving. countries like the US are too proud of their "freedom" that they don't care about improving their democracy and allow the gov't to take advantage of them.

        Hi all,

        Democracy, as it is actually meant to be is...A good system.
        The so called ''Democracy'' being practised in many countries currently is ......not so good.
        Propably what we need is the revival of the real democracy.

        Peace!

          Peace all. Obviously democracy varies in style from country to country...maybe some of the more liberal democracies,with proportional representation and a constitution/bill of rights are the better types of democracy. (eg holland,new zealand and some other european countries? )
          I used to think that 'anarchy' was the best political system (like my friend magi.) ,but i dont think man has evolved to the point where we can rely on such a system,and maybe man will never reach the point where 'anarchy' is a safe and viable system.....
          Democracy obviously is only as good as the people who 'run' it,and needs checks,laws,and a reasonable amount of 'direct/legitimate participation' to prevent abuses of power.
          Peace all.

                To date democracy is the best available system there is.
                Democracy was debated in this forum and the debated became rather heated with suspesions and banning from this forum. I hope we don travel along that path again
                regards

                  A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves money from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury, with a result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by dictatorship. The average age of the world's greatest civilizations has been 200 years. These nations have progressed through the following sequence

                  From bondage to spiritual faith;
                  From spiritual faith to great courage;
                  From courage to liberty;
                  From liberty to abundance;
                  From abundance to selfishness;
                  From selfishness to complacency;
                  From complacency to apathy;
                  From apathy to dependency;
                  From dependency back into bondage.

                    Peace,

                    Democracy as simply being 'vote of the majority' is a very bad idea.

                    ?And if you obey the majority of those on Earth they will lead you astray; that is because they follow conjecture, and that is because they only guess.? (The Message 6116)

                    The solution is to have a constitution based on the framework of God's guidance and then within such a framework you can have democracy.

                      The problem with creating a God based law is that people don't always agree as to what God's law is.
                      The laws shouldn't be based on a scripture which can have different interpretations but instead on universal law/morals.
                      The only practical gov't is democracy, but we have to keep modifying and improving it.

                        ? Therefore, congratulate My servants who listen to all views, then follow the best. These are the ones guided by God; these are the intelligent ones.

                        Doesn't this say That which the majority choose as best is Gods Guidance, therefore His Law!

                          I don't think the people in that verse are supposed to be the majority, because the majority only follows conjecture.

                            peace alpha97 and others,

                            Democracy is the only way to prevent dictatorship!
                            If we want a GOD-based law , then we (the faithfulls) have to manage to increase ourselves in numbers.

                            why does people think dictatorship is bad? most of the dictators we've had in the history of mankind civilization are not "free-minded". they only favor their side of the issue. communism fell in Russia because they were not practicing the true virtues of communism. they were practicing a fake communism under the dictatorship of stalin.

                            last but not least, most democracies are good because it allows people to have a voice in government. under the dictatorship of hitler, prior to WWII, Germany recovered quicker than expected from the losses of WWI because hitler dictated his policies smoothly and none intervaned with his policies. In a democracy, it is the input of a group of congressmens and spokespersons to form a policy, in most cases there are disagreements. while in dictatorship, it is easy to influence public for the betterment of the society with one viewpoint only.it is true that dictators do not allow the public for a free-voice but at least it is easier to control things while you are in an agreement with the public without any opposition.

                            peace, rifat

                              Salaams phoenix,

                              If you obey the majority of people on earth, they will divert you from the path of God. They follow only conjecture; they only guess. (6116)
                              17.
                              Waallatheena ijtanaboo alttaghootaan yaAAbudooha waanaboo ila Allahilahumu albushra fabashshir AAibadi

                              Those who eschew Evil,- and fall not into its worship,- and turn to Allah (in repentance),- for them is Good News so announce the Good News to My Servants,-
                              18.
                              Allatheena yastamiAAoona alqawlafayattabiAAoona ahsanahu ola-ika allatheenahadahumu Allahu waola-ika hum oloo al-albabi

                              Those who listen to the Word, and follow the best (meaning) in it those are the ones whom Allah has guided, and those are the ones endued with understanding.

                              The majority as you say are idolaters and those who make choices are not of them.

                              The idolaters don?t like to change and thus don?t make choices, do they? They tend to stick with the sh?they have.
                              Then 3918 doesn?t apply to them AS THEY DON?T WANT CHANGE.

                                        my inquiry is ming-lo, we are having a misunderstanding here. if a single ruler is open-minded, liberal, understanding and fair to his subjects, then is he even a dictator anymore?
