    okay, i am drawing a blank...what is "al kitaab"?

    ...and what is "ummul kitaab"?

    ...regards

    2 "Umm al-Kitab" the "Original Book" the Book from which alI the Books sent down to the Prophets have been derived. In Surah AI-Waqiah the same thing has been described as Kitab-um-Maknun (the hidden and preserved Book) and in Surah AI-Buruj 22 as Lauh-i Mahfuz (the Preserved Tablet), that is, the Tablet whose writing cannot be effaced, which is secure from every kind of interference. By saying that the Qur'an is inscribed in Umm al-Kitab, attention has been drawn to an important truth. Different Books had been revealed by Allah in different ages to different Prophets for the guidance of different nations in different languages, but aII these Books invited mankind to one and the same Faith they regarded one and the same thing as the Truth; they presented one and the same criterion of good and evil; they propounded the same principles of morality and civilization; in short, they brought one and the same Din (Religion). The reason was that their source and origin was the same, only words were different; they had the same meaning and theme which is inscribed in a Source Book with Allah, and whenever there was a need, He raised a Prophet and sent down the same meaning and subject-matter clothed in a particular diction according to the environment and occasion. Had Allah willed to raise the Prophet Muhammad (upon whom be His peace) in another nation instead of the Arabs, He would have sent down the same Qur'an in the language of that nation. In it the meaning and content would have been expressed according to the environments and conditions of the people and land; the words would have been different and the language also different but the teaching and guidance the same basically, and it would be the same Qur'an though not the Arabic Qur'an. This same thing has been expressed in Surah Ash-Shuara, thus "This (Book) has been revealed by the Lord of the worlds. The trustworthy Spirit has come down with it upon your heart so that you may become one of those who are (appointed by God) to warn (the people) in plain Arabic language; and this is also contained in the scriptures of the former peoples." (vv. 192-196).(For explanation, see Ash-Shu`ara 192196 and the E.N.'s on it).
    *3 This sentence is related both to Kitab-i mubin and to Umm al-Kitab. Thus, it is in praise of boththe Qur'an and the Original Book from which the Qur'an has been derived. This praise is meant to impress the fact that if a person dces not recognize the true worth of this Book and dces not benefit from its wise teachings because of his own folly, it would be his own misfortune. If someone tried to degrade it and found fault with it, it would be his own meanness. It cannot become worthless on account of someone's lack of appreciation of it, and its wisdom cannot be eclipsed by anyone's throwing dust at it. This is by itself a glorious Book, which stands exalted by its matchless teaching, miraculous eloquence, faultless wisdom and the sublime personality of its great Author. Therefore, none can succeed in minimizing its value and worth. In verse 44 below the Quraish in particular and the Arabs in general have been told that the revelation of the Book for which they are showing such lack of appreciation had provided them a unique opportunity of honour, which if they lost, would subject them to a severe accountability before God

      @afridi220-Hummmmmm only Bukhari can explain that

      yeah, makes sense; bukhari = buk + hari --> book (buk) + hari, in sanskrit/indo language, refers to gold or sumthing; so, bukhari = golden book? i guess golden book maybe interpreted as something very imp/valuable...whatever!

      another try again, in some indo languages hari can be taken as green...so that would make albukhari "the green book"...aka the green kitaab! interpret green as having to do something with nature (have heard it called color of nature), and presto - albukhari = the book of nature = the kitaab of nature!

      that done, what is ummulkitaab...ummmm...umm...no idea...hiranya garbha?

      on a serious note clues, anybody?

          cool...thanks!

          as of now, i see atleast 3 different "books" alkitaab, ummulkitaab, quraan

          quraan = revealed to muhammad
          ummulkitaab = source of alkitaab (and quraan)? = protected tablet/preserved book?
          alkitaab = revealed to muhammad and others = ?

              @l.hu

              read the synopsis...but i don't know what the book's conclusion is.

              however, seems to me that the author is keen to interpret quraan, time and again, as alkitaab itself...which is something i am having trouble with; thanks, anyway.

                  My understanding regarding this is

                  Kitab= Scripture.(words of God in shape of a book or what Muslims call Quran or
                  Great Reading)
                  Quran= reciting or the reciter= Mohammad(Ahmad)
                  Umm-ul-kitab= Human(Pure) Muhammad

                    peace thegod, khyaletanzim, all,

                    What is "al kitab" has been discussed in significant detail not only in books but in articles online and in this forum. I strongly recommend the search function.

                    1037 is an interesting ayat/sign/verse to begin with.

                    All information is correct to the best of my knowledge only and thus should not be taken as a fact. One should always seek knowledge and verify for themselves when possible: 17:36, 20:114, 35:28, 49:6, 58:11.

                      ...regards

                      Allah commands that our transactions be written down(2/282). There is also a transaction between Allah and the believers(9/111), which Allah Himself has written it down, IMHO. Maybe that writ is referred to as al-kitaab/kitaabillah.

                      It may be that ummul kitaab is referring to the original copy of that writ? Which is with Allah(13/39, 43/4).
                      In 3/7, the muhkamaat(decided/undisputed) ayaat are referred to as ummul kitaab.

                      Al-kitaab is revealed mufassal("detailed&quot(6/114). The quran is tafseel("detailing&quot OF al-kitaab(10/37), not al-kitaab itself. Which indicates that al-kitab may be revealed through the Quran, i.e the Quran provides the details of the "contract".

                      The Quran was revealed on one man(the messenger), ...
                      alai-ka 20/2, 78/23 ,
                      alai-he 25/32

                      while al-kitaab is revealed upon/towards the messenger...
                      ilai-ka 4/105, 5/48, 29/47
                      alai-ka 16/64, 39/41

                      ...as well as upon/towards all believers
                      alai-kum 4/140 ,
                      ilai-kum 6/114, since the transaction is with all believers and not only with the messenger.

                            Do you mean "people of the book"?

                            They are those who "read the book", so keeping in mind that the book is the universe, it is those who study the universe. It is the laws of the universe, which include the laws of the mind/subconcious that we must come to understand, not some statement written in a physical book, those are only there to point us back to al kitaab.

                            But remember, not all of them are the same (people of the book)

                                Peace be upon you Elke,

                                Sorry, I explained the wrong thing....you are referring to the following verse;

                                (1339) God eliminates/erases what He wills/wants, and He affirms/strengthens , and at Him (is) The Books' origin/mother.

                                The verse is basically saying God is the origin of the universe.

                                God is the NO-THING that manifests into everything. The energy/matter at rest, which wills itself into the creations of the world(moving...everything vibrates).

                                  just guessing

                                  lk

                                  Um (root Alif Meem Meem) is the origin and the end where things return to. Umm Mother (umm) because she is the origin and the abode of the baby. Umma is a group of people who share the same origin and aim. Ummul kitaab the origin and abode of the Book.
