Right...that's why you're too busy singing it while taking the hadith for your actual guidance laugh, in fact, that is a statement of their's!
From what I've witnessed, many focus on the sound of the reading of the Quran, instead of the meaning. They memorise the Quran and read it correctly and with a melody, but how many honestly know what they're saying? They play it instead of music in their cars in Ramadan but they're having a conversation instead of listening to the words. They hit the school children when they pronounce a word wrong (Arabic may not even be their language) but refuse to teach them the meaning.

I guess it's the preconceived notion that you get good deeds/hasanat for reciting/memorising Quran so it's drummed into everyone.
Why is it its ok to listen to nasheeds/anasheeds with tambourine's/drums and sing songs in praise of God,Prophets,companions etc. it's still music.. why is that music "ok" and others not? also these days they use computers to modify and make sounds.
double standards... whatever suits them.
though i don't think people should be listening to foul music

In the community that I grew up in (Predominately Pakistani and Palestinian community), few thought that music was haram, but in my present location (a college town)-most international students, which are the majority of our congregation believe that music is haram and verbally condemn it. Of course there are exceptions.
Most of us are familiar with the songs the ansar sang to greet the prophet after he immigrated to Medinah. I tell people that if the ansar had a guitar or a jukebox with trance music they would have also used it to greet the prophet.
It is utterly foolish to say that all music-instruments aside from what Medieval arabians used is prohibited.
I agree with Sarah though about other music- I was watching a rap video the other day.... well it was very vulgar and they were totally presenting women as sexual objects. Some things are best avoided.
