    Salam

As I have been brought up as a Sunni Muslim, I want to find out more about how I should do Salat but I'm getting different answers which is so confusing!!
First of all, some of you are saying that we should pray 3 times a day but it also states here on submission.org (http//www.submission.org/salat-how.html) that it is 5 times a day.
Also, how do I perform it? Some of you have theories that it is simply meditation but the Quran also mentions standing, kneeling and prostrating.
I am used to saying the tashahud but feel that its wrong. I've also read somewhere that the Quran does not mention saying salam on both sides. So how do I end my salat?
    Sooooo confooooosed! ???

    Salam and God bless

Confusion is no bad thing. You can read every occurrence in The Quran here
      http//www.studyquran.co.uk/PRLonline.htm

      See the root Sad-Lam-Waw

All information is correct to the best of my knowledge only and thus should not be taken as a fact. One should always seek knowledge and verify for themselves when possible: 17:36, 20:114, 35:28, 49:6, 58:11.

Salam Waqas and thank you for your help
I understand that meaning of Salat but how about the salat that requires standing, kneeling and prostrating?
How about the salat that requires ablution and facing Mecca?
        Salam

          peace,

I referred you to the occurrences of the word you wish to research as found in The Quran. This is the starting point.

I assume you are coming at salat thinking it means ABC, involves XYZ etc. and when you look at The Quran, you become confused because it does not say ABC or have XYZ. Why do you think that is?

You can pray the way Sunnis pray. Also there is the traditional Jewish prayer although I am not sure whether its influenced by Islamic tradition or not. Its claimed to be the way Solomon prayed

            http//wasalaam.wordpress.com/2008/10/12/how-do-jews-pray-part-2/

Also there is the previous scriptures as mentioned in the Koran

Muhammad is the Messenger of God. Those who are with him are hard against the unbelievers merciful one to another. You see them bowing, prostrating, seeking blessing, bounty and good pleasure (of God). Their mark is on their faces, the trace of prostration. That is their likeness in the Torah, and their likeness in the Gospel as a seed that puts forth its shoot, and strengthens it, and it grows strong and rises straight upon its stalk, pleasing the sowers, that through them it may enrage the unbelievers. God has promised those of them who believe and do deeds of righteousness forgiveness and a mighty wage(4829)

Genesis 171-4 And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the Lord appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me and be thou perfect. 2 And I will make my covenant between me and thee, and will multiply thee exceedingly. 3 And Abram fell on his face and God talked with him, saying, 4 As for Me, behold, My covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be a father of many nations.

Deuteronomy 56-9 I am the Lord thy God, which brought thee out of Egypt, from the house of bondage. 7 Thou shalt have none other gods before Me. 8 Thou shalt not make thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the waters beneath the earth 9 Thou shalt not bow down thyself unto them nor serve them...

Psalm 956 O come, let us worship and bow down let us kneel before the Lord our Maker.

Revelations 711-12 And all the angels stood round about the throne, and about the elders and the four beasts, and fell before the throne on their faces, and worshipped God, 12 Saying, Amen Blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honour, and power, and might, be unto our God for ever and ever. Amen.

Joshua 76-7 And Joshua rent his clothes, and fell to the earth upon his face before the ark of the Lord until eventide, he and the elders of Israel, and put dust upon their heads. 7 And Joshua said, Alas, O Lord God, wherefore hast Thou at all brought this people over Jordan, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us? Would to God we had been content, and dwelt on the other side of the Jordan!

Numbers 1620-22 And the Lord spake unto Moses and Aaron, saying, 21 Separate yourselves from among this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment. 22 And they fell upon their faces, and said, O God, the God of spirits of all flesh, shall one man sin, and wilt Thou be wroth with the all of the congregation?

Numbers 206 And Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, and they fell upon their faces and the glory of the Lord appeared unto them.

Matthew 2636-39 Then cometh Jesus with them unto a place called Gesthemane, and saith unto his disciples, Sit ye here, while I go and pray yonder. 37 And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be very sorrowful and heavy. 38 Then saith he unto them, my soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death; tarry ye here, and watch with me. 39 And he went a little farther, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me nevertheless not as I will, but as Thou Wilt.

Then the man bowed down and worshipped the Lord. (Genesis, 2426)

                Salam all,
Thanks Bigmo. So I can carry on praying traditionally, right. And thanks for the video. I'm bookmarking it! )
I know a lot of my questions have already been covered but I can see that no one has come to a conclusion yet. So I just need a yes or nope for this one..
I still need to know if the aya's given by submission.org refer to the 5 prayers correctly...

''The Five Times Are Specified in the Quran
                (1) The Dawn Contact Prayer is mentioned by name in 2458. Before sunrise.
                (2) The Noon Contact Prayer is specified in 1778. When the sun declines.
                (3) The Afternoon Contact Prayer is in 2238. Midway between noon & sunset.
                (4) The Sunset Contact Prayer is mentioned in 11114. Immediately after sunset.
                (5) The Night Contact Prayer is in 11114, and is mentioned by name in 2458.''

And what do I say instead of the Tashahud? Do I say the shahada?

                  ermmm was that rhetorical? ???
And you're right, that is why I'm confused. Salat is referred to loads of times in the Quran, so it must be important, but it doesn't say much about how we do it. Just want to make sure that I am doing it right.

No. It was a question to gauge your thought process.

Are you serious?!!! There is tons of information about salat in Al Quran. In fact, if you studied all the info in it about salat, it would take you at least a few weeks to digest it all. Here is a good starting point

                      http//mypercept.co.uk/articles/quran_on_salat.htm

Albeit it needs updating now, but still, it's reasonable.

All information is correct to the best of my knowledge only and thus should not be taken as a fact. One should always seek knowledge and verify for themselves when possible: 17:36, 20:114, 35:28, 49:6, 58:11.

I know, thats why I said it is mentioned loads of times. What I mean is that there isn't a step by step guide to performing salat in the Quran. Standing, kneeling and prostrating is mentioned, which validates the traditional method of salat, which is what I am doing now, but there are a few people on this site who claim to perform salat differently as they say that salat means different things in the Quran.
Thanks for that list. Bookmarked )

Don't let someone else tell you what sala is, how to pray to God. Whatever doesn't contradict the Quran is right. Pray one hundred times a day if you want to.

                                  Salam,

I think we were all confused in the begining, but Hamdoulah/Praise to God, with the help of all the brothers here, even if some interpretations are totally opposite, one can make his/her own idea.
Yes sunni way to pray is valid, I still do it same way without the "Amine" at the end of el fatiha, and without the "salat ala nabi (tahiya)".
I am convinced Coran mention 3 salats, but still can pray 5 when I can (e.g. week-ends).

                                  Hope it helps

                                    Salamun alaykum

If you are all confused about 'how to perform your ritual prayers' or what is commonly called "salat" then why not learn about it first from the Qur'an ? I am sure that you have all read or know about 1736 .......So before we do anything that we think of as good deeds and a command from god , shouldn't we first learn all about it ? Let's see what the verse says .

" And follow not that of which you have not the knowledge; surely the hearing and the sight and the heart, all of these, shall be questioned about that " (1736 ) .

As to the the reason why we perform 'Salat' is ....this verse

" Surely I am Allah, there is no god but I, therefore serve Me and keep up prayer for My remembrance " ( 2014 ) .

The verse is clear enough to understand that 'Salat' is for rememberance of god , however it does not tell us how to perform this supposedly "ritual prayers" , so for me , the best course to take is study about 'what salat is all about first' from the Qur'an , before I would do it . To continue doing salat as per "Pre-Qur'anic" knowledge " of it is not consistent with the purpose of learning The Qur'an , obeying god and following what the messenger himself followed , e.g. the qur'an .

My own experience when I switched from being a " Muhammadan" to god only according to Qur'an was , I suspended performing the ritual prayers until I could be certain that everything I read during ritual salat was 100% Qur'an and consistent with this verse

" Recite that which has been revealed to you of the Book and keep up prayer; surely prayer keeps (one) away from indecency and evil, and certainly the remembrance of Allah is the greatest, and Allah knows what you do " ( 2945 ) .

I think that the best thing to do while you are 'confused' is to discard all the previous knowledge acquired through brain washing and start fresh with your newly self-acquired knowledge from The Qur'an and your understanding of it , after all you are the one who will be responsible to god for your own actions / deeds .

                                    Peace

                                    almarh0m
