This is RK's translation of 2|54 "Recall that Moses said to his people, "O my people, you have wronged your souls by worshipping the calf. You must repent to your Creator. You shall kill your egos. This is better for you in the sight of your Creator." He did redeem you. He is the Redeemer, Most Merciful. "

His is the only translation that refers to the ego...so...what do you guys think? I think "faktil anfusakum" pretty much means straightforward kill yourselves, unless in Arabic it could have a less literal meaning.

In addition to application of reasoning/logic, one can also cross-reference

          "...faoqtuloo anfusakum..."

          http//www.studyquran.co.uk/PRLonline.htm
          Qaf-Ta-Lam
          Nun-Fa-Siin

All information is correct to the best of my knowledge only and thus should not be taken as a fact. One should always seek knowledge and verify for themselves when possible: 17:36, 20:114, 35:28, 49:6, 58:11.

            Peace,

Kill yourself will directly contradict 429 and other verses.

429 - O you who believe, do not consume each others' properties illicitly - only mutually acceptable transactions are permitted. You shall not kill yourselves. GOD is Merciful towards you.

              Peace,

"And I do not acquit myself. The nafs is ever inciting to evil, except those (*anfus) that my Lord has saved. Indeed, my Lord is Forgiving and Merciful." (1253)

              *plural of nafs.

The Arabic word "nafs" can have more than just one meaning. It could mean self. It could mean life. Or, it could mean the voice in the head. There could be other meanings too.

So then, it COULD mean the ego. Besides, isn't it said in the Quran that none will know the absolute, 100% true interpretations of the Quran other than Allah? We are obliged to believe in it and follow it to the best of our abilitiy, but only God knows how he is using that word in the verse I provided.

Yes. The voice in the head is the ego. So if the word "anfusukum" in Ayah can be understood and translated as your egos, then the whole meaning of the Ayah would make perfect sense.

                  Thank you, Meteora sun
