adam - mankind or single human?
-
adam that is mentioned in the quran, is that 1 single man... ?
or is it refering to all of mankind?i heard that it could mean mankind/humanity... but there are 3 signs against it
1.some verses mention 'children/descendants of adam'
2.there's a verse mentioning adam being the father of humans (or something like that)
3.and that God created a soul (or self) and from it its mate and from them (2) made all humans/trines/nationswhat would be the explanation of those 3 things, if adam=mankind?

Peace,
The explanation is clear, Adam = 1 Single Man -
peace,
either/or fallacy? Just a thought.
The root of "adam" in Classical Arabic can mean "mankind", "a means of access", "a pattern/exemplar" (see PRL). I think from this and in some contexts stems the hypothesis of adam=mankind.
Consider adam=archetype, one of many archetypes in AQ.

Adam and Banu Adam are two different words
Adam = Name of a Person (PRoper noun)
Banu Adam = Progeny of Adam (mankind)
Allah definitely knows this difference. Todays philosphers may not be knowing. It is not possible that a court decrees hang Mr X. The Govt says it is ment that whole progeny of the Mr X must be hanged as Quran (according to philosphers) cannot differentiate between Adam and Banu Adam.

Peace,
I think, depending on the context, "Adam" could be referring to BOTH a single man and all of humanity. But again, it depends on the context of the passage being mentioned...

This is a very interesting subject. This discussion has been going on in the Christian church for many years, and, as far as I know, in the reformed Jewish religion too.

Allah knew all the Contexts while using the word of Adam and Bani Adam.
Allalh used it very correctly according to context.
Even then if someone insists on "Crows are white" and Allah did not know the difference and context ,there is no solution for it.Anyone of the so called philosphers should prove that word "Adam' is NOT used as a Diptote in the Quran. It is a sign that is a PRoper Noun.

hmm, well yes i agree it would depend on the context, as sometimes it can mean 'mankind' other times something else...
but if we take for example the creation of adam, angels bowing, satan resisting...
in that particular context, would adam refer to mankind?
or a literal creation of 1 single human being? -
I believe it poses a problem if adam is a single human. Why should we all be punished for one mans disobedience. This goes against the quranic message of no soul shall carry another souls burden. This isn't my primary reason for believing adam is mankind but something worth pondering over if you believe adam is a proper noun.

Adam, literally, definitely refers to one person. He REPRESENTS mankind (711). This whole idea of Adam being one person in one verse and mankind in another is guesswork. Let's use the same logic for jesus, abraham, etc. Why limit it to Adam?
Conjecture is no substitute for the truth.
Allegory
- a representation of an abstract or spiritual meaning through concrete or material forms; figurative treatment of one subject under the guise of another.

Peace ;
Wherever Allah wanted to refer to "mankind" Allah clearly used the word "Bani Adama".

I think the opposite would have followed.
If Adam (and Eve) did not disobey, we would not have come into existence...
It is their sin (and casting out from the garden)
who brought us about (humanity) ... all part of the divine plan of course...I believe it poses a problem if adam is a single human. Why should we all be punished for one mans disobedience. Of course I believe in divine plan but I don't agree with the christian version that we are here because of Adam sinning. This goes against being responsible or your own self.

That is not the Christian version. It is just the version of some Christians, but I agree with you

The story of Prophet Adam has intrigued me since I was little because I kept questioning why on earth we were 'punished' on earth because of his sin. Yet recently I read the some surahs that narrated the story of Prophet Adam and you know, I started to think differently now. Here goes
And when thy Lord said unto the angels Lo! I am about to place a viceroy in the earth, they said Wilt thou place therein one who will do harm therein and will shed blood, while we, we hymn Thy praise and sanctify Thee? He said Surely I know that which ye know not (230)
It seems a bit strange reading the above verse if we hold the view that Prophet Adam was punished by being cast out to earth. I mean, God says that he intended to 'place a viceroy on earth', which is Prophet Adam... and that happened BEFORE Prophet Adam sinned. So it doesn't fit to me nor does it make sense that God created Prophet Adam knowing that he would be punished later. So I actually think that Prophet Adam was first created on earth, contrary to the popular beliefs that he was created in heaven.
Then it follows that Prophet Adam was admitted to heaven after AFTER he served his time on earth, maybe due to his righteousness and fulfillment of his responsibilities as a governor of the earth.
And We said O Adam! Dwell thou and thy wife in the Garden, and eat ye freely (of the fruits) thereof where ye will; but come not nigh this tree lest ye become wrong-doers. (235)
If Prophet Adam WAS created on heaven, why would God tell him to dwell there. I think it will make more sense if Prophet Adam was somewhere else (which is the earth) and THEN he was given his place on heaven.
So my personal view is that we humans were created to be on earth, and not as the result of Prophet Adam breaking God's commandment.
So it goes like this
- Prophet Adam was created to live on earth as its ruler/governor/viceroy
- He performed righteous deeds and was rewarded heaven afterward.
- He broke God's commandment and sent back to earth, but he repented, and was promised heaven if he made up for his sins (so he had to start all over again).
I personally think the story of Prophet Adam illustrates how a righteous person/believer can be led astray by Satan; it serves as a warning as to not listen to satan's whisper which will push us away from God, God's 'place', which is heaven. I don't know for sure, that is just my interpretation, what do you guys think?
-
actually i don't see 230 focused on adam, more on angels...
i see it as God wanting to expose iblis/satan...but as it goes, he does seem to be created in this garden/heaven... whereever that is... could be here on physical earth, or could be a spiritual thing, and he descended from another realm...
and yes, it doesn't add up us being punished for what he did, which further implies he was not just 1 human, rather it refers to all humankind, as we all do bad things and are judged according to them.
