    Selam

I was asked today to find the translation of Ayat al-Kursi which as we know muslims all over the world hold as the most excellent verse. It amazes me still that people are told to recite abc and they have no knowledge of what they are actually saying, strange indeed.

Here is a site which gives the general background http//www.islamicinformationcentre.co.uk/alkursi.htm#2

So to keep it simple if this verse is recited the benefits are

    1. Holy prophet (SAWW) said whoever recites the first 4 ayats of Surae Baqarah, then Ayatul Kursi and then the last 3 ayats of Surah e Baqarah, will not be inflicted with any kind of difficulty in his wealth or himself, Satan will not come near him and he will not forget the Qur'an.

    2. Holy Prophet (SAWW) said Qur'an is a great word, and Surae Baqarah is the leader of the Qur'an and Ayatul Kursi is the leader of Surae Baqarah. In Ayatul Kursi there are 50 words and for each word there are 50 blessings and good in it.

    3. One who recites Ayatul Kursi every morning will be in the protection, safety of Allah until the night.

    4. If one ties this to ones wealth or children, they will be safe from Satan

    5. Our Holy Prophet (SAWW) has said These things increase ones memory sweets, meat of an animal near the neck, Adas (Lentils), cold bread and recitation of Ayatul Kursi.

    6. For those of our dear ones who have passed away, recitation of Ayatul Kursi and giving it as Hadiya to them, gives them light (noor) in the grave.

    7. Frequent recitation makes ones own death easy.

    8. When leaving home, if one recites it once, the Almighty has one group of Angels to come and protect you. If recited twice, 2 groups of Angels are assigned to do this. If recited 3 times Allah tells the Angels not to worry as the Almighty himself takes care of him.

    9. The Holy Prophet has said If one recites Ayatul Kursi before going to sleep, Allah will send an Angel to come and look after you and protect

    10. When one is alone in the house, recitation of Ayatul Kursi and asking Allah for help will make you remain calm and you will not fear.

    11. The Holy Prophet has said When leaving home,if one recites Ayatul Kursi, then Allah will send 70,000 Angels to do Istighfaar for him until he returns home, and upon his return Poverty will be removed from him.

    12. If one recites this after performing Wudhoo, the 5th Imam Hadhrat Imam Muhammad Baqir (AS) has said Allah will give him a reward of 40 years of Ibadaat, his position will be raised in the Heavens 40 times (levels) and will marry him to 40 Horains.

    13. One who recites it after every prayer, their salaat will be accepted, they will remain in the safety of the Almighty and He will protect them.

    14. Allah told Prophet Musa (AS) If one recites it after every salaat, the Almighty will make his heart a thankful one (Shakireen), will give him a reward of the prophets, and his deeds will be like those of the truthful (Siddiqeen).

    15. To increase light or vision (noor) in the eyes, recite Surae Alhamd once, then Ayatul Kursi and then once the following dua- "U-eedhu nora basaree binuril lahi alladhi la yutfaa", "I seek refuge for the light of my eyes by the light of Allah(SWT), which does not become extinguished".

Will like to hear others views on this. Thanks.

      peace

I have tried to research ayat al kursi previously, but all I ever came across were texts like the one you just posted. There is a lot of talk about the benefits of reciting it and so on, but no actual analysis / discussion of the contents.

I used to have a ring with the verse on it, it was one of my favourites and very beautiful. Unfortunately, I lost it. '(

We were told to recite it at night and clap three times so that the devil would stay far away . There was some "science" involved as to the vibrations of the claps marking the perimeter of protection. It was an urban legend kind of though, all the kids we knew, knew about this perimeter "science". Anyways, I still recite a group of verses at night in my head, it's like a force of habit since I was a kid... it helps to wind down the day. I understand 'em in Arabic, but for those that don't, obviously it's obviously better to read what they understand. This is one of them, I find it interesting even after decades

Never even heard of some of those benefits though.

I heard if you recite it, it gives protection and wards off evil, and should be recited before bedtime. Here is a translation I found

In the name of Allah the Most Merciful, and Compassionate Allah

There is no god but He,
          The Living, the Everlasting,
Slumber seizes Him not, neither sleep,
To Him belongs all that is in the heavens and the earth.
Who is there that can intercede with His, except by His leave?
He knows what lies before them and what is after them,
And they comprehend not anything of His Knowledge save as He wills.
His throne comprises the heavens and the earth,
The preserving of them fatigues Him not,
And He is the All-High, All-Glorious.

            Peace,

It probably got popular because people like to imagine their god sitting on a seat (kursi), though the word is obviously idiomatic. Also, the mere mention of intercession gets sectarians virtually foaming at the mouth in anticipation of the day when the prophet takes them out of hell (in their imaginations). Of course, if we understand its meaning in light of the glorious reading (al-quran al-magid), it's beautiful to celebrate it. One thing the made-up title "ayat al-kursi" achieves is that it draws our attention to the fabrications present in todays copies (musahif) of the great reading "ayat" doesn't mean "verse", there are no chapter titles, etc.

            Peace,

            -David

              Peace everyone,

First of all, when it comes to the words of GOD, one should make no differentiation between any of them. Words of GOD/ALLAH(swt) are all equally and highly valuable and must be cherished just the same. In other words, there must be a meaningful purpose behind every single WORD. Otherwise GOD wouldn?t have revealed them to us.

The age old ignorance and the build up of superstitions over centuries long, and more importantly deserting The Qur?aan which is suppose to be the book of GUIDANCE, all together and hand in hand, have led the Muslim community to go so far astray from the right path that they know nothing much about the true meanings of the words of GOD in The Qur?aan except a bunch of nonsense hooplas.

Saying that, I do not see any difference between 2255 and any other verse in The Qur?aan. They are all for our GUIDANCE, provided that we do not mix them with ignorance and superstitions. Just study them on a regular basis and ask GOD to guides us in His Light and increases our knowledge.

              Now, let?s talk about 2255.
I think all the statements in the verse are pretty obvious, except the statement in which GOD is informing us that His KORSSY surpasses/encompasses the HEAVENS and the EARTH. Almost all the ?scholars? take the GOD?S THRONE/?ARSH and HIS KORSSY equally and the same. Korssy in Arabic means FOOSTOOL/CHAIR. Korssy sits right at the foot of the THRONE for the KING to rest his feet on it. Here the point is that the FOOTSTOOL compare to the THRONE is very smaller in size.

The conclusion is that the whole UNIVESE is ONLY a very tiny part of GOD?S THRONE/KINGDOM and that GOD/ALLAH(SWT) is a lot BIGGER than the whole UNIVERS. That is why the verse ends with ??and He is THE MOST HIGH, THE AWESOMELY BIG.?

              Peace,
              Khalil

Imaam Ibn Katheer (may Allaah have mercy on him) said in his Tafseer of Aayat al-Kursiy from Soorat al-Baqarah

This is Aayat al-Kursiy, which has a high status. It was reported in a saheeh hadeeth from the Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) that it is the greatest aayah in the Book of Allaah? It was narrated from Ubayy, i.e., Ubayy ibn Ka?b that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) asked him which aayah in the Book of Allaah was the greatest. He said, ?Allaah and His Messenger know best.? He repeated it several times, then he said, ?Aayat al-Kursiy.? The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, ?Congratulations upon your knowledge O Abu?l-Mundhir. By the One in Whose hand is my soul, it has a tongue and two lips, and it glorifies the Sovereign (i.e., Allaah) at the foot of the Throne.? This was also narrated by Muslim, without the phrase ?By the One in Whose hand is my soul??.

It was narrated from ?Abd-Allaah ibn Ubayy ibn Ka?b that his father told him that he had a vessel in which he kept dates. He used to check on it and found that the number was decreasing. So he kept guard on it one night and saw a beast that looked like an adolescent boy. He said ?I greeted him with salaams and he returned my greeting, then I asked him, ?What are you, a jinn or a human?? He said, ?A jinn.? I said to him, ?Show me your hand.? So he showed me his hand, and it looked like a dog?s paw with dog?s fur. I said, ?Do all the jinn look like this?? He said, ?I know no one among the jinn who is stronger than I.? I said, ?What made you do what you did ?? He said, ?We heard that you are a man who loves charity, and we wanted to have some of your food.?? Ubayy asked him, ?What will protect us from you?? He said, ?This aayah, Aayat al-Kursiy.? Then the next day he went to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and told him (about what had happened) and he said, ?The evil one spoke the truth.??

Imaam Ahmad narrated Muhammad ibn Ja?far told us, ?Uthmaan ibn ?Itaab told us, he said I heard Abu?l-Sulayl saying a man from among the companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) addressed the people until a large number had gathered around him, then he climbed onto the roof of a house and addressed the people, saying ?The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, ?Which aayah of the Qur?aan is the greatest?? A man said, ? ?Allaah! Laa ilaaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), the Ever Living, the One Who sustains and protects all that exists?? .? He said he put his hand between my shoulders and I felt coolness in the centre of my chest, or he put his hand on the centre of my chest and I felt coolness between my shoulders, and he said, ?Congratulations on your knowledge, O Abu?l-Mundhir.?

It was narrated that Abu Dharr (may Allaah be pleased with him) said ?I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) whilst he was in the mosque and sat down. He said, ?O Abu Dharr, did you pray?? I said, ?No.? He said, ? Get up and pray.? So I got up and prayed, then I came and sat down. He said, ?O Abu Dharr, seek refuge with Allaah from the devils of men and jinn.? I said, ?O Messenger of Allaah, are there devils among men?? He said, ?Yes.? I said, ?O Messenger of Allaah, what about salaah?? He said, ?It is the best, so let whoever wants to, do a little of it and let whoever wants to, do more of it.? I said, ?O Messenger of Allaah, what about fasting?? He said, ?It is obligatory and it is good, and the reward with Allaah is greater.? I said, ?O Messenger of Allaah, what about sadaqah (charity)?? He said, ?Allaah multiplies it many times over.? I said, ?O Messenger of Allaah, what (charity) is best?? He said, ?What a person gives at times of hardship, or what he gives in secret to a poor person.? I said, ?O Messenger of Allaah, which of the Prophets was first?? He said, ?Adam.? I said, ?O Messenger of Allaah, was he a Prophet?? He said, ?Yes, a Prophet to whom Allaah spoke.? I said, ?O Messenger of Allaah, how many Messengers are there?? He said. ?Three hundred and umpteen, a great crowd.? And once he said, ?(Three hundred and) fifteen.? I said, ?O Messenger of Allaah, what is the greatest thing that has been revealed to you?? He said, ?Aayat al-Kursiy, ?Allaah! Laa ilaaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), the Ever Living, the One Who sustains and protects all that exists?? .?? (Narrated by al-Nasaa?i).

Al-Bukhaari narrated that Abu Hurayrah said ?The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) appointed me to guard the Ramadaan zakaah. Someone came and started taking some of the food. I grabbed hold of him and said, ?I am going to take you to the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him)!? He said, ?Let me be, for I am in need and I have children and am in great need.? So I let him go. The following morning, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, ?O Abu Hurayrah, what did your prisoner do last night?? I said, ?O Messenger of Allaah, he complained of being in great need and having children to look after, so I took pity on him and let him go.? He said, ?But he was lying, and he will be back.? So I knew that he would come back, because of what the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) had said. I lay in wait for him, and he came and started taking some of the food. I grabbed hold of him and said, ?I am going to take you to the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him)!? He said, ?Let me be, for I am in need and I have children. I will not come back again.? So I took pity on him and let him go. So I lay in wait for him on the third night, and he came and started taking some of the food. I grabbed hold of him and said, ?I am going to take you to the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him)! This is the third and last time. You said that you would not come back, then you did come back.? He said, ?Let me go, and I will teach you some words by which Allaah will benefit you.? I said, ?What are they?? He said, ?When you lie down in your bed, recite Aayat al-Kursiy, ?Allaah! Laa ilaaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), the Ever Living, the One Who sustains and protects all that exists?? until the end of the aayah, then you will have a protector from Allaah and no shaytaan (devil) will come near you until morning comes.? Then I let him go. The following morning, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, ?What did your prisoner do last night?? I said, ?O Messenger of Allaah, he claimed that he would teach me some words by which he said Allaah would benefit me, then I let him go.? He asked, ?What are they?? I said, ?He told me, when you lie down in your bed, recite Aayat al-Kursiy, from the beginning to the end of the aayah, ?Allaah! Laa ilaaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), the Ever Living, the One Who sustains and protects all that exists?? . And he told me, you will have a protector from Allaah and no shaytaan (devil) will come near you until morning comes.? And they were always keen to do good.? The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said ?He indeed told you the truth, although he is a liar. Do you know who you have been speaking with for the past three nights, O Abu Hurayrah?? I said, ?No.? He said, ?That was a shaytaan (a devil).??

According to another report, ?? ?I was taking food to a very poor family among the jinn.? So he let him go, and he came back on the second night and then the third night. I said, ?Did you not promise me that you would not come back? I will not leave you today until I bring you to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him).? He said, ?Do not do that. If you let me go, I will teach you some words which, if you say them, no one among the jinn, great or small, male or female, will come near you.? He said, ?Will you do that?? He said, ?Yes.? He said, ?What are they?? He said, ??Allaah! Laa ilaaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), the Ever Living, the One Who sustains and protects all that exists?? , and recited Aayat al-Kursiy until the end. So he let him go and he went away and did not come back. Abu Hurayrah told the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) about that, and the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said to him ?Did you not know that before?? This was narrated by al-Nasaa?i from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ?Ubayd-Allaah from Shu?ayb ibn Harb from Ismaa?eel ibn Muslim from Abu?l-Mutawakkil from Abu Hurayrah. We have noted above that something similar happened to Ubayy ibn Ka?b, so these are three separate incidents. Abu ?Ubayd said in Kitaab al-Ghareeb Abu Mu?aawiyah told us, from Abu ?Aasim al-Qaffi, from al-Shu?bi from ?Abd-Allaah ibn Mas?ood, who said ?A man from among the humans went out and was met by a man from among the jinn, who said, ?Will you wrestle with me? If you throw me to the ground I will teach you an aayah which, if you recite it when you enter your house, no shaytaan will enter.? So he wrestled with him and threw him to the ground. He said, ?I see that you are very small and your forearms are like the front paws of a dog. Are all the jinn like this, or only you?? He said, ?I am strong among them. Let us wrestle again.? So they wrestled again and the human threw him to the ground. So he (the jinn) said, ?Recite Aayat al-Kursiy, for no one recites it when he enters his house, but the Shaytaan leaves, farting like a donkey.?? It was said to Ibn Mas?ood, ?Was that man ?Umar?? He said, ?Who else could it have been, other than ?Umar?? ?

It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said ?In Soorat al-Baqaraah there is an aayah which is the best of all the aayahs of the Qur?aan. It is never recited in a house but the Shaytaan leaves Aayat al-Kursiy.? This was also narrated via another isnaad, from Zaa?idah from Hakeem ibn Jubayr. Then he said, its isnaad is saheeh although they did not narrate it. It was also narrated by al-Tirmidhi from the hadeeth of Zaa?idah, with the wording, ?Everything has its pinnacle and the pinnacle of the Qur?aan is Soorat al-Baqarah. In it there is an aayah which is the greatest in the Qur?aan Aayat al-Kursiy.? Then he said (it is) ghareeb, we do not know it except from the hadeeth of Hakeem ibn Jubayr. Shu?bah discussed it and classed it as da?eef (weak). It was also classed as da?eef by Ahmad, Yahyaa ibn Mu?een and other imaams. Ibn Mahdi classed it is matrook and al-Sa?di classed it as false.

It was narrated from Ibn ?Umar that ?Umar ibn al-Khattaab went out one day to some people who had prepared a meal. He said, ?Who among you can tell me which is the greatest aayah in the Qur?aan?? Ibn Mas?ood said, ?You are asking one who knows. I heard the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) say, ?The greatest aayah in the Qur?aan is ?Allaah! Laa ilaaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), the Ever Living, the One Who sustains and protects all that exists?? .?

Concerning the fact that it includes the greatest name of Allaah, Imaam Ahmad said ?It was narrated that Asmaa? bint Yazeed ibn al-Sakan said ?I heard the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) say about these two aayahs (interpretation of the meanings) -- ?Allaah! Laa ilaaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), the Ever Living, the One Who sustains and protects all that exists?? and ?Alif-Laam-Meem. Allaah! Laa ilaaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), Al-Hayyul-Qayyoom (the Ever Living, the One Who sustains and protects all that exists)? ? that they contain the greatest name of Allaah.?? This was also narrated by Abu Dawood from Musaddid and by al-Tirmidhi from ?Ali ibn Khashram, and by Ibn Maajah from Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah, all three of them narrating from ?Eesa ibn Yoonus from ?Ubayd-Allaah ibn Abi Ziyaad . Al-Tirmidhi said it is saheeh hasan.

It was narrated in a marfoo? report that Abu Umaamah said ?The greatest name of Allaah, which if He is called by it, He responds, is in three (soorahs) Soorat al-Baqarah, Aal ?Imraan and Ta-Ha.? Hishaam, i.e., Ibn ?Ammaar, the khateeb of Damascus, said ?In al-Baqarah, it is ?Allaah! Laa ilaaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), the Ever Living, the One Who sustains and protects all that exist? . In Aal ?Imraan it is ?Alif-Laam-Meem. Allaah! Laa ilaaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), Al-Hayyul-Qayyoom (the Ever Living, the One Who sustains and protects all that exists)? . And in Ta-Ha it is ?And (all) faces shall be humbled before (Allaah), Al-Hayyul-Qayyoom (the Ever Living, the One Who sustains and protects all that exists)? .?

Concerning the virtue of reciting this aayah after the prescribed prayers, it was narrated that Abu Umaamah said ?The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said ?Whoever recites Aayat al-Kursiy immediately after each prescribed prayer, there will be nothing standing between him and his entering Paradise except death.? This is how it was narrated by al-Nasaa?i in al-Yawm wa?l-Laylah, from al-Hasan ibn Bishr. It was also narrated by Ibn Hibbaan in his Saheeh from Muhammad ibn Humayr, who is al-Homsi, and is also one of the men of al-Bukhaari. The isnaad meets the conditions of al-Bukhaari.

All the sayings about the prophet peace be upon him in this Thread are wrong and they are one of the lies that are attached to the prophet peace be upon him, I ask the moderator to remove them. No proof about any of the sayings. They are just a man-made .

In my opinion, the stuff hope4 posted is a serious diversion from the actual analysis and application of the text. Wow, life is so ostensibly easy for these guys huh. Just recite 2/255 and all these magical things happen. Ibn Kathir is not much help either. Quoting people saying how great it is without providing a shred of textual evidence about it. I dunno how people say Ibn Kathir is 'tafsir al-quran bil quran'. This is certainly not an example of it.

To me, the best thing that ever happened to my reading of 2/255 was when the imam read it in context. He read from 2/254 all the way to 2/257. To me, that was so enlightening because 2/254 (which is about spending in the way of Allah) connects so well with 2/255's message of having God's quality of 'hayy' and 'qayyom' on your side.

Do they? I always felt he is tafsir al-Qur'an bil ahadeeth. hypno

Yeah, I got pretty frustrated when I read all that stuff. Long-winded blabla about the benefits of reciting it, but no reflecting on the actual content of this beautiful verse.

A lot of this actually sounds like supersition to me. But then the whole thing about reciting this or that aya for protection / reward etc. does not make much sense to me at all. It's the contents that counts, not mindless recitation, or putting a verse on your wall, around your neck etc. Reminds me of the people who put a copy of the Qur'an on the dashboard of their car, believing it will protect them ...

The ahadeeth that was written in the thread are man-made, none of them exist in the Book of Bukhari or Muslim's book neither the other 4 books .

These kind of Ahadeeth are from a sect called "Arawfede" and they made lies about hadeeth to mislead people and deceive them and to make them reject hadeeth like you .

The ahadeeth above are lies, for these couple of reasons, as it seems you're not aware of the meaning of Hadith, so you are just allowed to know that there are reasons but reasons theirselves are too much for someone like you .

I've knew the rule 2 and 3 that the mod tried to use it against me, well I have to remind him that he or she is the one who don't use rule 2 and 3 which makes it a biased to his power of banning anyone against his beliefs, I was thinking that the website is for all (sunni, shi'e and even atheists ) but as I see those mentioned people are not welcome and if they are they must not talk .

Is this free mind or decaive mind ?

You're "Ruse" but not clever .

You remind me of someone Mindshunter. Anyways, we don't remove content usually.

Yes, I remind you of your worst nightmares, you have ever seen or dreamt about it .

Now, I'm asking you to remove the ban if you're truthful, banned me will just make my situation more stronger that what I said is the truth, you said use Quran , all my verses are about Quran.

The debate was not fair, he asked me, I answered him, I asked him, he didn't answer . Why ? you tell me .

True Story of a Young Girl Reciting Ayat-ul-kursi

The following is a true incident that happened.

It was reported in a local paper in Rochdale (A town, northeast of Manchester), of a young woman who was raped in a small dark alley (a narrow passage between buildings) one evening.
On a separate evening around the same time, a young Muslim girl was walking home from college. Aware that it was getting dark fast, she wanted to get home as soon as possible, so her mother would not be worrying about her being outside alone at night.

The young Muslim girl faced a dilemma. To take the short-cut down the same alleyway to avoid getting home after dark, or to take the longer route and have her mother worrying herself sick about her daughters safety.

Conscious of the time, she takes the alleyway. While the girl is walking she sees a rather sinister and dark figure of a man walking towards her from the other end. As her pace quickens,
she begins to read Ayat-ul-kursi for her safety.
The man, he makes eye contact but carries on walking.

When the young Muslim girl reaches home she tells her family about this sinister looking man, they advise her to contact the police, after having read the newspaper article some time before. When she contacts the police they ask her to give a physical description of the man. It matches the description the rape victim had given.

Some days later the young Muslim girl receives a phone call from the police, asking her if she would come down to the police station to identify the man in a line up. Both the rape victim and the Muslim girl pick out the same man.

The police are confused; they ask the rapist why he attacked one girl and not the other.
In reference to the Muslim girl, he replies

?why would I attack her? when she was walking with two huge men on either side of her??

                                          Alhamdulillahi Rabbil Aalameen.
