Dear all, I do not need to tell you, what a Muslim is? Since, most of you claim, to be one. Please, just contrast your concept with this linguistice understanding of the word. It is easy enough for you to able to follow.

The word is derived from a verbal root , with an augmentative letter added at the begining. This converts it to a noun of time and place. With this little lesson in Arabic. Let us look at it's meaning.

"One who is in a state of safety and security, by becoming free of all evils". Please contrast, this with your understanding of word Muslim and the state of those people, who claim to be Muslims, are in.

Please, comment and share your thoughts.

Next question, is this definition of Muslim, a permanent state? Or can it be so? Based upon linguistic construct of the word. To put it simply, could one be a Muslim for life?

      Peace,

Thanks for pointing that out. But, how about contemplating the meaning and the message in the meaning?

Verse 911 lays out the bare minimum required to be a "member of Islam" - whether or not that is one and the same thing as a "Muslim"

              ...if they (the mushriks)

              repent

              establish regular prayers

              and practise regular charity,

they are your brethren in the deen

So anybody like to suggest what "repenting" involves here?

Use all the meanings used by the root as well as all the verse references of the term.

All information is correct to the best of my knowledge only and thus should not be taken as a fact. One should always seek knowledge and verify for themselves when possible: 17:36, 20:114, 35:28, 49:6, 58:11.

                      Wakas

Disproved once and for all salat = prayer

Amongst traditional Muslims, a commonly held belief is that the Arabic word "salat" exclusively means "prayer", and must be done with specific words in a set routine.

It may not exclusively mean "prayer" at all places but then again to arrive at the conclusion above and giving this arrogant statement "Disproved once and for all" is a Big statement to make.

                      1778
You shall observe the Salat when the sun declines from its highest point at noon, as it moves towards sunset. You shall also observe the Quran at dawn. Quran at dawn is witnessed.

                      2945
You shall recite what is revealed to you of the scripture, and observe the Salat, for the Salat prohibit evil and vice. But the remembrance of GOD through Salat is the most important objective. GOD knows everything you do.

What is the usage of Salat in these verses? to start with

                        Surah Ibrahim
"My Lord, make me one who consistently observes the Salat, and also my children. Our Lord, please answer me.

What else is the meaning of Salat if not Prayer in this verse.

                        Surah Ta ha
"I am GOD; there is no other god beside Me. You shall worship Me alone, and observe the Salat to remember Me

                        56
O you who believe, if you observe salat, then wash your faces and your hands up to the elbows, and wipe you heads and your feet to the ankles; and if you are filthy, then become clean; and if you are ill or traveling or you have excreted, or you have sexually touched the women, and you could not find water, then you shall do ablution from clean soil; you shall wipe your faces and your hands. God does not want to make any hardship over you, but He wants to cleanse you and to complete His blessings upon you that you may be appreciative.

If salat = oath/bond as according to WAKAS then why wash your face and hands o o

These verses and many others clearly indicate SALAT=Prayer.

I would like include in URDU if some one can translate it

"Falsafi ko behs kay ander Khuda milta nahi
Dor ko suljha raha hay aur sira milta nahi"

                          4102
And if you are(Muhammad) with them and you hold the assembly for them, then let a group from amongst them stand with you and let them take their weapons; and when they have submitted then let them stand guard behind you; and let a group who has not yet assembled come and assemble with you, and let them be wary and take their weapons with them. The rejecters hope that you would neglect your weapons and goods so they can come upon you in one blow. There is no sin upon you if there is harm to you from rain, or if you are ill, that you put down your weapons, but be wary. God Has prepared for the rejecters a humiliating retribution

                          Wakas

This is an insightful understanding for any multi-faith based society. In fact, this is how many Western societies work today, i.e. as long as you live by the law of the land you are allowed to practice your own faith.

This is the reason we try to change the meanings of Quran and try to make them fit according to present conditions, as I pointed out in one of my previous posts that people have changed the meaning of "Huir" to white grapes to make it acceptbale for westren socities.

There is nothing bad in it but when you have these ideas in your mind, you cannot understand the quran with pre-judice. May be Quran does not support these ideas?

                            Hi Raajah,

The article I referenced is only for those with logical/reasoning skills. For example, people who actually read and verify it. If a person did this they would have read the link referenced in the article http//www.mypercept.co.uk/slw.htm and would not ask nonsensical questions as those in posts #9, 10 of this thread.

Further, they would not use fallacious argument such as ad hominen argument, as contained in post 11.

I recommend reading the following sites

An Active Participle has been converted into Passive Participle in the translation.

Mazhar - Would appreciate your suggested translation. I had to look up the definitions of Active Participle and Passive Participle... -[ as best as I understand, Active Participle in Arabic means "one who does".

My current belief is that the word "muslim" describes one who is striving for peace by following God's guidance, a definition I have still not been able to verify because of my lack of knowledge.

Badar - according to my current belief, a person only meets the definition of "muslim" as long as they ARE striving for peace by following God's guidance.

Are you sure salat=prayer? Definitely not in all occurrences.

                                    and i said this

If only you had given reply to the two verses i mentioned verse 4102 where the prophet is described as leading the salaat and verse 56. Why do people have to wash before taking a oath/bond? It would have been much appreciated rather than sticking to a comment "Salat=prayer,Disaproved for EVER".

Still if you can help i will be thankful.

Before I answer any questions, have you actually read the article I referenced (which contains the 2nd link I referenced)?

If yes, then I will answer any and all questions from a person who has obviously read it. The questions you asked, clearly suggested you did not study it.

Hence, my statement of The article I referenced is only for those with logical/reasoning skills. For example, people who actually read and verify it.

Again, I recommend reading the following sites
                                        http//web.archive.org/web/20040415023848/http/www.santarosa.edu/~dpeterso/permanenthtml/lessonFRAME.html
                                        http//www.logicalfallacies.info/

All information is correct to the best of my knowledge only and thus should not be taken as a fact. One should always seek knowledge and verify for themselves when possible: 17:36, 20:114, 35:28, 49:6, 58:11.

So brother you just don't want to answer! no problem.
Your quotes clearly suggest what you are trying to say.
Why should I present to your goodself the evidence that I have read the article in first place?
Secondly if i had not read it how did I quoted your absurd claim "Salat=prayer Disproved for ever"?
Thirdly What if a person lacks logic or reasoning skills? can he not learn about YOUR Islam? you will only transfer your knowldge to the people who have read LOGIC lessons from the sites you mentioned?
Come on brother say ASTGHFARULLAH cause Allah does not like such a behavior.
When a Blind person went to ask some questions to the prophet and Prophet ignored him; do you know what Allah said about this in Quran? Surely you do!
He (Muhammad) frowned and turned away.

When the blind man came to him.

How do you know? He may purify himself.

Or he may take heed, and benefit from the message.

                                          As for the rich man.

                                          You gave him your attention.

Even though you could not guarantee his salvation.

The one who came to you eagerly.

                                          And is really reverent.

                                          You ignored him.

                                          Indeed, this is a reminder.

                                          Whoever wills shall take heed.

                                          In honorable scriptures.

                                          Exalted and pure

When I offered My salat today I realy prayed for you.
