uhm.. ok, so i have this question which has been bugging me for a while, and is ONE of the reasons i go to a mosque very rarely these days.
why oh WHY do imams scream at the top of their lungs when giving a friday sermon in a mosque?! to top that off, sometimes they do that IN ARABIC!!! and i'm not talking about middle east here, i've had this experience for example in texas, georgia, puerto rico, and in manchester, UK.

first - the screaming part. since i grew up in northern europe and rarely heard anyone raising their voice either in a family setting, school or work-related environment, i've wondered for long if it is just my subjective opinion or cultural bias that makes me think that they yell, and make me feel that i'm being scolded for something.
i want to know if there are others out there who feel this way?

and second part - in arabic. now this makes no sense at all. why would a sermon in an english-speaking country be held in arabic while half of the audience is clearly non-arab?? isn't the PURPOSE of the sermon to convey an idea? if ~50% of the audience had no clue about what was being said then was this purpose fulfilled or did those people just waste an hour of their life? i believe it would be more fair the khutba be held in a country's official language (with translations into other languages if necessary).
it's not like islam is by the arabs for the arabs.

that said, i admit i have been to a couple of nice mosques also, in maryland where the sermon was fully in english and one in puerto rico where there was audio translation into spanish available.
sadly the positive experiences have clearly been in minority, at least for me. so instead of getting a head-ache listening to some dude shout his hat off in arabic i just don't go anymore.. giveup

    what's your take on this?
    peace

EDIT by khutba i meant the long 30-40 min lecture preceding the prayer.

      Peace, princess

I have been taken aback by screaming imams for years. I hate the Friday prayers in Egypt because they never sound as if the imam is talking about love, mercy, God etc., it's always an aggressive screaming that makes me feel very uncomfortable.

Same with many of those imams and sheikhs who appear in YouTube videos, lectures etc. I just hate their manner of speaking and body language and can't bear listening to it for more than a couple of minutes.

Look at this promotional video for an Islamic event in Germany, it features some of Germany's most popular Salafi preachers. You don't have to understand German at all to see how aggressive they come across and how unpleasant their language is. The screaming guy with the red beard at about 100 is actually talking about prayer ? can you believe it?!

that was so predictable, it all starts with removing of Hijaab, and the rest is an easy journey.

              Peace be upon you,
              with all due Respect.

Same thing here but not so often.
Imams here in London don't exactly scream and they deliver the sermon in Arabic and sometimes in English but the one thing that bother sme so much, is that women have to be on the first floor, somewhere there, in the darkness, covered and silent and just listening, no sound, nothing. I don't like it. brickwall

I'd love to see a woman imam, I really do wanna hear a woman speaking as the leader of the sermond and leading a prayer.
Would that be wrong? Would that be a sin? After all, believers focus on prayers not on other believers during prayers, yes?

              God knows best.
Keep up with the reading Qur'an and don't forget to pray.
              Peace be upon you.

Its easy.. to wake up the sleepy ummah..
As their sermon is soooo booooring... and they themselves understand that their sermon is sooo booring, that's why they feel to add some "SCREAAMING" to get the listener attention.. and also functioned as a wake up alarm at the same time.
As thus whether they scream in Arabic, English or Swahili doesn't make any differences..

This happens in religious sermons in some denominations of Christianity. I grew up in a very enthusiastic church so I'm probably pretty used to it. I can only assume it's just a bit too much charisma or just a lot of passion about what they are delivering the speech on. I've heard some passionate speeches without the aggressive overtone but I guess this manner just really gets the message across and it does appeal to some audiences, mainly males. That tone doesn't work for everyone I guess.

                      Peace peace

that is very peculiar indeed. i mean the whole 'woman is a sex object' concept. several years ago, before getting acquainted with the so called 'islamic thought' i never even imagined someone could think of women as an object or something lesser or stupider than a man. nothing like that was ingrained in any teachings that i came in contact with growing up (and thank god for that!).
if a man and a woman worked same hard and were same talented they could achieve same goals. that's what i believed. and i still do.

and to think one will get turned on by a woman-imam speaking is just ridiculous. or if SOMEONE (eg. the likes of raaajah) actually DO get turned on, then honestly, it is their duty to seek help for their perverted mind. men are not monkeys or dogs in a constant mating season to get an impulse as soon as they catch a glimpse of a female. puh-leez. i have more faith in men. i think most of them are incredible, intelligent, spiritual beings; not predatory animals, like some like to portrait them.

come on raaajah, i know i can expect a juicy answer from you to the above paragraph, so gimme your best shot (or at least gimme a good laugh D)!

interesting, sirius! i'm trying to fit it in my head that someone can actually 'like' this style. i don't mind passionate and eloquent, it IS better than monotonous. but i guess arabic is such a 'strong' language to begin with that over-zealousness can easily be translated into shouting, especially by people from a different background.
on the second thought, in leyna's video the dude was talking in german, but for me, it had the same effect (i.e. ignore)
i appreciate you trying to show me another point of view though, thank you!

Any time a male opposes a motion with the three words, ?Muslim?, ?women? and ?freedom? in the motion, he is simply asking for trouble! It was as if I had to be the ?bad guy? arguing for the subjugation of women.
                                          Yasir Qadhi.

i have actually met yasir qadhi in the states, and though i don't agree with ALL his views he is actually a pretty reasonable guy for someone educated in a traditional way in saudi arabia, and as far as i have heard from him he does NOT attempt to subjugate women, so please don't try to drag him in to prove any of your points, thanks.

Do you even read my quote? even after reading the quote you did exactly, what Yasir is warning of.
That is the problem with you Women, specially the one's who don't care about boundaries that Islam puts on them, whenever you put forward arguments against TOTAL freedom, you are painted as "bad guy" who is trying to subjugate Women.

Yasir, you seem to have good hand on Feminists PULSE.
