Salaam, what are your opinions on faith schools?
I have 3 children & have decided with my wife, who isn't muslim, not to send them to a religious school as we feel I can teach them about God at home when they are old enough to understand the concept of God.

Sounds like what I would do. Since there currently is no religious school that will teach them what I want anyway.

          Peace,
          Respect.

I wouldn't go to one nor would I send anyone else there.
I mean, I first ask myself, what did the principal order the teachers to tell the kids?

          Just my view.
          God knows best.
          Peace.

              Salaam,

Personally, the term 'faith school' sounds like an oxymoron. One attains faith from within, through a life's journey, and I don't believe that faith can be taught at a formal institution. Besides, something spiritual is better experienced in a family environment anyway .

Anyway, I think you made the right decision by not sending your kids to a 'faith school'. You save yourself a lot of $$$ because as far as I know, Islamic/Catholic schools here can be extremely pricey.

You said it all. I was just thinking about this issue because there was a documentary on it recently here in the UK. As we see on this forum, we all interpret Islam in different ways, so I don't think it can be taught in a concrete "this is what you must do to stay on the straight path" way.

I learn about my faith through discussions with my family. I feel that's what makes it strong. You're definitely making a good choice in my opinion.

By faith schools do you mean Madrassah, Sunday School etc?

I have had experience with madrassah and I think the way the teachings are designed to focus on rituals and exclusivity, the children grow up with a narrow vision and constricted hearts. For the more inquisitive minded children, these schools serve to add confusion.

BornAgain, I agree with your explantion of faith. Each person experiences faith in their own unique way. Its rather unfair to expect even my own child to have the same experience of faith as myself.

I attended catholic schools. For me, it was instrumental in my spiritual development and if anything helped me to see the Truth. I attended 10 different schools - military, catholic, hindu, public, etc. Being exposed to so many different cultures, religion, languages, socioeconomic class really made me the person that I am.

It is God who I believe guided me and has been my best teacher.

Salaam, thank's for your replies they were helpful.
The only schools close to where we live are Christian Schools. There are a few non-religious schools further away which is where we'll send them.
I think a child has to believe in God themselves rather than to be taught belief & faith but I'll certainly teach them about the culture & practice of islam & let them decide for themselves weather they want to live as a muslim if you know what I mean?

                          Salam

Do what you feel is right. young children generally imitate those they idol/love (i.e. parents) maybe when they are older they can make a more informed decision.

If I have kids i'd like to take them to Arabic school, if they learnt some Quran i wouldn't mind. At the end of the day parents are children's first teaches and things can be filtered / discussed etc. however if it was a staunch strict religious school i'd have second thoughts.

Does God say anywhere in the Koran to raise children as muslims?

3113 And Luqmaan said to his son, while he was advising him "O my son, do not set up any partners with God; for setting up partners is an immense wrongdoing."
2132 And Abraham enjoined his sons and Jacob "O my sons, God has selected the system for you, so do not die except as ones who have submitted."
2133 Or were you present when death came to Jacob and he said to his sons "Who shall you serve from after me?" They said "Your god, and the god of your fathers Abraham, and Ishmael, and Isaac; One god and to Him we submit."

                                      Not sure, I can't remember.

335 When the wife of Imran said "My Lord, I have vowed to You what is in my womb, dedicated, so accept from me, You are the Hearer, the Knower."
1810 When the youths hid in the cave, and they said "Our Lord, bring us a mercy from Yourself, and help us in our affair!"
1912 "O John, take the Book with confidence." And We gave him authority while in his youth.
1880 "And as for the youth, his parents were believers, so we were concerned that he would oppress them by his transgression and disbelief."
