    Dear Amin,
Code 19 provides a reasonable explanation for these letters.

At least he provided an answer to the question raised in the thread, we can agree or disagree, but where are the answers of others? just only criticism will lead no where.

      Alif lam ra
      ha meem
      noon

Combined together gives alrahman = Most gracious
      i just noticed one

but these letters sounds more like swearing, they come before a sentence like this is a book where there's no doubt etc

maybe with more efforts and the history of ancient arabic, we will understand their meaning, remember , it was a barrier of 1000 years between us and the quran, 300 years after the prophet people closed knowlege and locked everything with hadiths, so more efforts and one day we will understand, one must search in ancient history, maybe aramaic or hebrew, or ancient dictionaries, if someone have access to these dictionaries as ancient as 1100 years, i know they exist because maurice bucaille studied some

          Allaah says in the Quraan

It is He Who has sent down to you (O Prophet &#1605 the Book. In it are Verses that are entirely clear, they are the foundations of the Book; and others not entirely clear. So as for those in whose hearts there is a deviation they follow that which is not entirely clear thereof, seeking tribulation, and seeking for its hidden meanings, but none knows its hidden meanings save Allaah. And those who are firmly grounded in knowledge say "We believe in it; the whole of it is from our Lord." And none receive admonition except men of understanding.

So with regard to the letters that appear at the beginning of several Surahs, they are from the Mutashaabihaat (the ambiguous or unclear verses). No one knows their meaning except Allaah. We believe in them and believe it is from our Lord. However, those people who have a disease in their heart will try to explain the meaning of these letters or try to interpret them. Allaah warns against such a thing, because only Allaah knows what they mean.

A certain astray sect from the 72 misguided sect, known as the Asharis, claim that although the Quraan is the Speech of Allaah, Allaah does not speak with letters or sound. They claim that Allaah's speech is Nafsani (internal), and it is not a speech which can be heard, or which consists of letters.

This deviant and severely misguided belief is refuted by the fact that the letters "Alif Laam Meem", "Qaaf", "Saad", "Ta-Ha", "ya Seen", etc., are part of the Quraan, and therefore part of Allaah's Speech, which clearly prove that Allaah's speech does indeed consist of letters.

For Exemple Alif LAm Ra , these are letters that form a word, special word, not a speaking language kind of word, but names, so what are these names?

Before Islam, the qrab tribe we divided and ,never lived under one state or system, so was their alphabets, every tribe had an order for it's alphabet
              Exemple,
The tribe of Khozaa, has an alphabet order like this, Alif Lam Mim Qyn Sad Kaf Qaf Sin
The tribe Of Amer has an alphabet order like this, Ali Lam Ra Quaf Sad Sin Mim Kaf

The tribe of zaid has an alphabet order like this Kaf Ha Ya Ayn Sad and so on

So the alphabets are known by it's head, the first few letters in order, so a tribe's alphabets are known by the first few letters, thats why we never heard in the quran , they ask you about....? people asked about mensturation and everything but neve asked about thses letters, it's because they knew what they meant,

It's like , if somebody say ABCD you know it's the latin alphabets, without saying to you guess what these letters represent

              Another exemple
if we say QWERTY , u know it's english keyboard, if we say AZERTY we know it's frensh keyboard, even though, english and frensh letters are the same, in the keyboard they differ in order so we call them QWERTY or AZERTY
So everytime we read in the Quran Alif LAm Mem; or any other letters with their Order, we always read after these letters This is the book where there is no boubt, or this is the book full of wisdon, always about the book, and starts with the alphabets of a tribe so it attracts them, attracts the tribe and it's enemies, so they want to hear what is this soura about , and the point is, everytime they read the letters, after it this is an arabic book, in other word, it's like saying rejoice oh arabs, you have been chosen de deliver a message from God, plus the Arabs didn't expect any book and didn't believe they might have a book, for them a book is only for foreigners, Allah never speak to them, so it's like oh Tribe Of khoraizah, rejoice, this is an arabic book from your lord

well that's it for now, i learned this from a friend, don't know how true it is , but it does make perfect sense
Sorry for my style in writing, hope didn' go out of the subject

                Maseehullaah

Don't acuse everyone who try to understand something from the quran as someone who has a desease in their heart, people here make efforts, love Allah and want to understand the message he sent them, unlike u sunnis for whom science and knowlege stoped at ibnkathir and tabari , a 1000 years ago , stay in year 600, us ? we're in 2010, no offence, but open your mind, i see you have knwlege of hadiths and quran, but you're a slave or in prison of hadith, u can't try to understand what Allah want to tell you from his message that he sent u , u just left it on bukhari and all, u don(t even know who bukhari really was, we only know what they told us, but we know what the quran is and we know who delivered it, ans it is a prophet
bukhari and ibn kathir are no prophets brother, i use to see them like that too, but they're not.
You're a person that can help a lot, xith your arabic knowlege and all

We have in Quran, many Suras that starts with the letters Alif Laam Mim? any one knows the significance of this word?

Arabic uses a tri-consonant system of words to determine definition.
The Arabic Initials are the signs used to show which signs are used to create these tri-consonant words, to show who received the revelation, and to assist in understanding the meanings of the Arabic revelation through descriptions in which these words are used.

A-L-M means 'nations', as in (AlaaaLaMeena).

May Allah increase the believers in knowledge.
                  Peace and blessings.

There is NO full stop after Allah. Check the original text. Thus the meaning has now changed to those who possess knowledge WILL be able to understand the meaning of these allegorical/multiple-meaning verses. Please read Page 85 of Quran A Reformist Translation.
