    Hello everyone )

Pardon me if this isn't the right section or if this has been discussed here before. I'm just confused about 6121 (God, in this verse forbids to eat of that on which His name is not mentioned). If someone could explain what this verse is really talking about; is it about mentioning the name of Allah while slaughtering an animal, and what is that name of Allah that should be mentioned, or is it about something else?

    Thanks

      Peace and Welcome.

The word translated in 6121 as 'mentioned' is zikr. Zikr as it relates to God's zikr is defined as remembrance/to be mindful of

      3/191
Those who remember/zikr God while standing, and sitting, and on their sides, and they ponder in the creation of the heavens and the earth "Our Lord you did not create this without purpose, be You glorified, spare us the retribution of the Fire!"

      4/103
So when you are done with the bond, then remember/zikr God while standing, or sitting, or on your sides. Then, when you are relieved, you shall hold the bond. Certainly, the bond for the believers is a scheduled ledger.

We're asked to remember/be mindful of God in all that we do and thus relegating zikr to an animal sacrifice, with regards to 'mentioning', doesn't make much sense since it's supposed to be practiced all the time.

        Salam,

My take is that this is a command on all slaughtered animals, and, if an animal is slaughtered without the name of God being mentioned, then it is a forbidden food/meat (except the catch of the sea).

        Regards,

          Hello,

This is what I've gathered and understood from the Quran.

There are 4 things that are prohibited to eat 1. Animals that die of themselves 2. Blood 3. The meat of pigs 4. Animals dedicated to other than God.

So the animals that God's name was not mentioned while being slaughtered (and it wasn't dedicated to other than God) is not prohibited as long as you mention God's name before you eat from it or in general before you eat anything. I think mentioning God's name is not just for Animals, it's for everything we eat.

          God Bless

            Nice thread.

There are very similar rules/expression in Judaism as Islam. In the Torah it says you must say the name of G-d before slaughtering an animal as well. The Jewish understanding of this is that ALL life is sacred and comes from G-d. So saying a blessing before slaughtering an animal causes you to remember that life is sacred. Not only that but you are taking the life from the animal so that you may live. So when Allah asks us to say a blessing over our food or over an animal being slaughtered is because we need to appreciate that he has given us life and we need to pray for the animal that just lost theirs.

            These are just my thoughts.

Is Quran-alone view similar to this?

                Taking Allah?s Name while Slaughtering
                Worship
                Question asked by...
                Answered by Shehzad Saleem
                Question
Not taking Allah?s name while slaughtering an animal is Haram ? right! I have seen many Muslims here in America eating non-halal food in restaurants .They claim it is Mukruh (undesirable) and not Haram. Is that correct? Does the Sunnah of the Prophet (sws) specify a particular way of slaughtering? Also what are the reasons of taking Allah's name while slaughtering an animal?

                Answer
According to the Qur?an, animals which are not slaughtered while taking Allah?s name are forbidden
Eat not on which Allah?s name has not been pronounced. (6121)

In other words, taking Allah?s name before slaughtering an animal is a positive requirement. Therefore, the meat of animals which are slaughtered while disregarding this practice bears the label of prohibition in the Islamic Shari?ah.
Yes, the Sunnah of the Prophet (sws) specifies a particular way of slaughtering. It is called ?Tadhkiyah? by the Qur?an. In this particular way, animals as goats and sheep are slaughtered through their jugular veins and are not killed instantaneously by cutting the bead of the neck. This method keeps intact the connection between the heart and the brain so that every drop of blood is drained out of the slain animal. This purifies the meat from the contamination of blood ? and achieving purity, we know, is the objective of every directive of Islam.
The underlying reasons in taking Allah?s name before sacrificing an animal can be summed up as follows1

                1. As a principle, Muslims have been directed to take Allah's name before every task, routine or work they do. This actually is an acknowledgement of the Almighty?s favours and as such is a worthy expression of gratitude.

                2. The sanctity a life possesses requires that even an animal be sacrificed only with the permission of the Almighty who is the Creator of life. It is only Allah who can give us this right, and, therefore, as a reminder of this fact, it is necessary to take His name when the life of an animal is taken.

                3. This practice closes the gateway to polytheism. Those who are aware of the history of various religions know that animal sacrifice is deeply linked to idol worship. To please various deities, polytheists used to sacrifice them. Taking Allah?s name eliminates these unwarranted practices as well.

                4. These reasons are summarized from Islahi?s ?Tadabbur-i-Qur?an?. For details please see Amin Ahsan Islahi, Tadabbur-i-Qur?an, 2nd ed., vol. 3, (Lahore Faran Foundation, 1986), pp. 156-7

                  Salaaman Layth and all,

                  Salam,

My take is that this is a command on all slaughtered animals, and, if an animal is slaughtered without the name of God being mentioned, then it is a forbidden food/meat (except the catch of the sea).

                  Regards,

                  My understanding is somewhat different.

I believe that if an animal is slaughtered without the name of Allah being remembered/mentioned on it, it is not Haraam, but it is "Fisq" as mentioned in 6121

If someone dedicate the animal to others is for sure Haraam/forbidden.

One thing is also bothering me from your post, i.e., "Food". What do you mean by food here, do you mean fruits, cereals, vegetables also? I don't include them.

May Allah guide us all towards the truth pr

                    Salaam brother NN,

                    welcome to the forum

                    Hello,

You understanding is different from AlQuraan. Please look at 6121

                    6121

6121 And do not eat from that which the name of Allah has not been mentioned, for it is wickedness. And the devils they inspire their supporters to argue with you; and if you obey them, then you are polytheists.

"Has not been mentioned" does not mean that you can remember Allah's name before you eat. Allah's name has to be remembered at the time slaughter.

I think mentioning God's name is not just for Animals, it's for everything we eat.

If this is the case then it will be really hard to eat anything cause in India, farmers do pooja before they cut their cultivation/field.

Because of Allah's grace and because of His knowledge of everything, He made it easy for us all. Alhamdulillahi Rabbil Aalameen. And now we are free to eat anything except animals by Allah's great grace and mercy upon us eat

All these aayaats are relating to 6145 as per my understanding

                          6145

6145 Say I do not find in what is inspired to me to be unlawful for any eater to eat except that it be already dead, or running blood, or the meat of pig - for it is foul - or what is a wickedness, dedicated to other than Allah. But whoever is forced to, without seeking disobedience or transgression, then your Lord is Forgiving, Merciful.

These all are animal related even after it is said "I do not find in what is inspired to me to be unlawful for any eater to eat"

                          54

54 They ask you what was made lawful to them, say All the good things have been made lawful for you, and what the trained dogs and birds catch, you teach them from what Allah teaches you. So eat from what they have captured for you and mention the name of Allah upon it, and be aware of Allah. Allah is swift in reckoning.

Here it is clearly mentioned to "mention/remember the name of Allah upon it". Not as in 6121 there name has to be mentioned.

                          6146

6146 And for those who are Jewish We have made unlawful all that have claws; and from the cattle and the sheep We made unlawful their fat except what is attached to the back, or entrails, or mixed with bone. That is a punishment for their rebellion, and We are truthful.

                          Again about animals.

I don't find any aayaats about Halaal or Haraam referring to vegetables or cereals or fruits, etc... Do you find any? If so, please post in here.

How you ascertain "dedicated to other than Allah" is only animals; if seafood is offered to an idol, can you eat?

It's my belief that the verse is about being ever mindful of Allah's blessing, when eating, in prayer, ...

You forgot to quote complete aayat bro.

                              1614

1614 And He is the One who has commissioned the sea, that you may eat from it a tender/fresh meat, and that you may extract from it pearls that you wear. And you see the ships flowing through it, so that you may seek from His bounty, and that you may be thankful.

It is very clearly mentioned that when we eat any seafood, we have to be thankful to Allah for the same.

If birds or seafood etc. when did you get a chance to "cut" them?

Birds??? Sorry, bro, I don't find a single aayat about birds but still Allah did not prefer it for us. And you don't slaughter seafood, but as you said "cut" there is not harm in taking Allah's name.

I am not saying not to mention the name of Allah on seafood while cutting them, but I thing there is flexibility as it is not mentioned 1614 nor in other aayats in relation to seafood.

By your understanding a vegitarian is always exempt and can gorge without being thankful or anything; reminds me of this one girl who was a veggie I asked how she distinguishes which seafood is OK to eat and she replied she doesn't eat anything if it has a face...

It is not my personal view brother, but I have shown you my understand of the aayaat. You can prove me wrong if you find any aayaats otherwise.

It's my belief that the verse is about being ever mindful of Allah's blessing, when eating, in prayer, ...

2240 And masajid is mentioned in it name of Allah much

I did not understand what exactly you are trying to say. Can you please rephrase your sentence. Thanks.

Well there are loads of dietary laws in the Torah. However that is in the talmud (which is like the hadith). So for dietary laws in the Torah see Lev. 113; Deut. 146, Lev. 119; Deut. 149, Lev. 1113-19; Deut. 1411-18, etc.

I think the confusion about how to keep Kosher is one of the reasons Allah made it simpler in the Quran. Actually, I think the Islamic Halal laws are much more straight forward.

On a different note, if you have dinner with a Christian and they slaughter a chicken and bless it in the name of Jesus does that make it Halal? My guess is not. However they would say it is because Jesus is God to them. And they would say he is the same God.

                                Thanks,

"Has not been mentioned" does not mean that you can remember Allah's name before you eat. Allah's name has to be remembered at the time slaughter.

Where does it state that the mentioning of Allah's name must be at the moment of slaughter? What about modern beef mills that mindlessly and without religion slaughter livestock. We should be able to mention the name of God when we eat it, as this fulfills the negative commandment "And do not eat from that which the name of Allah has not been mentioned, for it is wickedness."

Am I missing an ayah that mentions the slaughter? Christians buy meat from the store and will very often as that it be blessed in Jesus' name before they eat it. This was not done at the time of slaughter, but was done at the time of eating. I would still consider this to be meat dedicated to idols and would not partake.

Is it to say Bismallah? And how second part of the verse 6121 related to or helps understanding the first part ? Anyone else?

@Jack, could you give a real life example, a situation, where this particular commandment applies?

That's the thing, I don't think it's a commandment per se. We are asked to remember God no matter what we do. What does this accomplish? We have to think about what God is. To me, God is the light of the heavens and earth, the positive energy. When we remember God, we submit to that energy. Thus, the importance of being mindful of God, always. Prounouncing God's name doesn't accomplish anything really. It's about intent, which again goes back to the mind. One can 'pronounce' God's name and not have good intentions, or a hidden agenda.

Unless we're only eating that which we kill ourselves, there is no guarantee that whomever slaughtered the animal 'pronunced' God's name anyway. Each soul is held accountable for its own deeds. Forgive me If I am not gonna put my blind faith in someone who claimed to have slaughtered an animal using the 'halal' method. I've known people who have owned 'halal' meat shops and believe me there is no guarantee. Out of halal meat? No problem, let's go buy the regular meat and sell it off as halal. This happens all the time.

                                          Salaam CNB,

Where does it state that the mentioning of Allah's name must be at the moment of slaughter? What about modern beef mills that mindlessly and without religion slaughter livestock. 6121

6121 And do not eat from that which the name of Allah has not been mentioned/remembered, for it is wickedness. And the devils they inspire their supporters to argue with you; and if you obey them, then you are polytheists.

If you notice, Allah is NOT asking you to eat without taking Allah's name ON IT. But it is said "Do NOT eat from that Allah's name has NOT been taken/mentioned/remembered" same as

The word used in Arabic in 6121 "Yuzkari" is in passive voice, so it cannot be "take Allah's name on it". Please look at

                                          2114

2114 And who are more wicked than those who prevent the temples of Allah that His name be mentioned in them; and they seek their destruction? They will not be able to enter them except in fear; they will have humiliation in this world and in the Hereafter a painful retribution.

                                          And also in 2240, 2436

What about modern beef mills that mindlessly and without religion slaughter livestock.

                                          Sorry, no idea.

So mention the name of Allah upon them in succession; then, once their sides have become still, you may eat from them and feed with them the poor and the needy. It was thus that We have made them in service to you, that you may be thankful.

My understanding I got it from this aayat, I don't find otherwise.
