Before we finish on the first surah, I would like to draw your attention to some specific terms that appear in it. First of them al-aalamin (wonder that the definite article al- is of some importance!)
This term looks rather straightforward. According to most dictionaries and the all-favourite Burhan, it can be translated into various ways and has many derivatives

Remember Moses said to his people "O my people! Call in remembrance the favour of Allah unto you, when He produced prophets among you, made you kings, and gave you what He had not given to any other among the peoples.
Recall that Moses said to his people, "O my people, remember GOD's blessings upon you He appointed prophets from among you, made you kings, and granted you what He never granted any other people.

But when he came to the (fire), a voice was heard "Blessed are those in the fire and those around and glory to Allah, the Lord of the worlds.
When he came to it, he was called "Blessed is the One (who is speaking from) within the fire, and those around it." Glory be to GOD, Lord of the universe.

But when he came to the (fire), a voice was heard from the right bank of the valley, from a tree in hallowed ground "O Moses! Verily I am Allah, the Lord of the Worlds....
When he reached it, he was called from the edge of the right side of the valley, in the blessed spot where the burning bush was located "O Moses, this is Me. GOD; Lord of the universe

We did send Moses aforetime, with Our Signs, to Pharaoh and his Chiefs He said, "I am a messenger of the Lord of the Worlds."
For example, we sent Moses with our proofs to Pharaoh and his elders, proclaiming "I am a messenger from the Lord of the universe."

By Allah's will they routed them; and David slew Goliath; and Allah gave him power and wisdom and taught him whatever (else) He willed. And did not Allah Check one set of people by means of another, the earth would indeed be full of mischief But Allah is full of bounty to all the worlds.
They defeated them by GOD's leave, and David killed Goliath. GOD gave him kingship and wisdom, and taught him as He willed. If it were not for GOD's support of some people against others, there would be chaos on earth. But GOD showers His grace upon the people.
Fahazamoohum bi-ithni Allahiwaqatala dawoodu jaloota waatahu Allahualmulka waalhikmata waAAallamahu mimma yashaowalawla dafAAu Allahi alnnasa baAAdahumbibaAAdin lafasadati al-ardu walakinna Allahathoo fadlin AAala alAAalameenaIsa

Allah said "I will send it down unto you But if any of you after that resisteth faith, I will punish him with a penalty such as I have not inflicted on any one among all the peoples."
GOD said, "I am sending it down. Anyone among you who disbelieves after this, I will punish him as I never punished anyone else."

Behold! the angels said "O Mary! Allah hath chosen thee and purified thee- chosen thee above the women of all nations.
The angels said, "O Mary, GOD has chosen you and purified you. He has chosen you from all the women.
Wa-ith qalati almala-ikatuya maryamu inna Allaha istafaki watahharakiwaistafaki AAala nisa-i alAAalameena

And (remember) her who guarded her chastity We breathed into her of Our spirit, and We made her and her son a sign for all peoples.
As for the one who maintained her virginity, we blew into her from our spirit, and thus, we made her and her son a portent for the whole world.

Say "Shall we indeed call on others besides Allah,- things that can do us neither good nor harm,- and turn on our heels after receiving guidance from Allah? - like one whom the evil ones have made into a fool, wandering bewildered through the earth, his friends calling, come to us', (vainly) guiding him to the path." Say "Allah's guidance is the (only) guidance, and we have been directed to submit ourselves to the Lord of the worlds;-
Say, "Shall we implore, beside GOD, what possesses no power to benefit us or hurt us, and turn back on our heels after GOD has guided us? In that case, we would join those possessed by the devils, and rendered utterly confused, while their friends try to save them `Stay with us on the right path.' " Say, "GOD's guidance is the right guidance. We are commanded to submit to the Lord of the universe.
Qul anadAAoo min dooni Allahi mala yanfaAAuna wala yadurrunawanuraddu AAala aAAqabina baAAda ithhadana Allahu kaallathee istahwat-hualshshayateenu fee al-ardi hayranalahu as-habun yadAAoonahu ila alhudai/tina qul inna huda Allahi huwa alhudawaomirna linuslima lirabbi alAAalameena

And no reward dost thou ask of them for this it is no less than a message for all creatures.
You are not asking them for any money; you simply deliver this reminder for all the people.

We have sent you out of mercy from us towards the whole world.

Say "I have been forbidden to invoke those whom ye invoke besides Allah,- seeing that the Clear Signs have come to me from my Lord; and I have been commanded to bow (in Islam) to the Lord of the Worlds."
Say, "I have been enjoined from worshipping the idols you worship beside GOD, when the clear revelations came to me from my Lord. I was commanded to submit to the Lord of the universe."

Say Is it that ye deny Him Who created the earth in two Days? And do ye join equals with Him? He is the Lord of (all) the Worlds.
Say, "You disbelieve in the One who created the earth in two days, and you set up idols to rank with Him, though He is Lord of the universe."

He said "O my people! No wandering is there in my (mind) on the contrary I am a messenger from the Lord and Cherisher of the worlds!
He said, "O my people, I am not astray; I am a messenger from the Lord of the universe.

But We delivered him and (his nephew) Lut (and directed them) to the land which We have blessed for the nations.

She was asked to enter the lofty Palace but when she saw it, she thought it was a lake of water, and she (tucked up her skirts), uncovering her legs. He said "This is but a palace paved smooth with slabs of glass." She said "O my Lord! I have indeed wronged my soul I do (now) submit (in Islam), with Solomon, to the Lord of the Worlds."
She was told, "Go inside the palace." When she saw its interior, she thought it was a pool of water, and she (pulled up her dress,) exposing her legs. He said, "This interior is now paved with crystal." She said, "My Lord, I have wronged my soul. I now submit with Solomon to GOD, Lord of the universe."
Qeela laha odkhulee alssarhafalamma raat-hu hasibat-hu lujjatan wakashafat AAansaqayha qala innahu sarhunmumarradun min qawareera qalat rabbi innee thalamtunafsee waaslamtu maAAa sulaymana lillahi rabbi alAAalameenaOthers

Allah did choose Adam and Noah, the family of Abraham, and the family of 'Imran above all people,-
GOD has chosen Adam, Noah, the family of Abraham, and the family of Amram (as messengers) to the people.
Inna Allaha istafa adamawanoohan waala ibraheema waala AAimranaAAala alAAalameena645
Of the wrong-doers the last remnant was cut off. Praise be to Allah, the Cherisher of the worlds.
The wicked are thus annihilated. Praise be to GOD, Lord of the universe.
FaqutiAAa dabiru alqawmi allatheenathalamoo waalhamdu lillahirabbi alAAalameena686
And Isma'il and Elisha, and Jonas, and Lot and to all We gave favour above the nations
And Ismail, Elisha, Jonah, and Lot; each of these we distinguished over all the people.
Wa-ismaAAeela wailyasaAAawayoonusa walootan wakullan faddalna AAalaalAAalameena690
Those were the (prophets) who received Allah's guidance Copy the guidance they received; Say "No reward for this do I ask of you This is no less than a message for the nations."
These are the ones guided by GOD; you shall be guided in their footsteps. Say, "I do not ask you for any wage. This is but a message for all the people."
Ola-ika allatheena hadaAllahu fabihudahumu iqtadih qul la as-alukumAAalayhi ajran in huwa illa thikra lilAAalameena1010 The righteous in Paradise
(This will be) their cry therein "Glory to Thee, O Allah!" And "Peace" will be their greeting therein! and the close of their cry will be "Praise be to Allah, the Cherisher and Sustainer of the worlds!"
Their prayer therein is "Be You glorified, our god," their greeting therein is, "Peace," and their ultimate prayer is "Praise be to GOD, Lord of the universe."
DaAAwahum feeha subhanakaallahumma watahiyyatuhum feeha salamunwaakhiru daAAwahum ani alhamdu lillahirabbi alAAalameena (=12!)One of the two sons of Adam

"If thou dost stretch thy hand against me, to slay me, it is not for me to stretch my hand against thee to slay thee for I do fear Allah, the cherisher of the worlds.
"If you extend your hand to kill me, I am not extending my hand to kill you. For I reverence GOD, Lord of the universe.
La-in basatta ilayya yadakalitaqtulanee ma ana bibasitin yadiyailayka li-aqtulaka innee akhafu Allaha rabba alAAalameenaAlso the unrighteous refer to Rabbi al-aalamin

(Their allies deceived them), like the Evil One, when he says to man, "Deny Allah" but when (man) denies Allah, (the Evil One) says, "I am free of thee I do fear Allah, the Lord of the Worlds!"
They are like the devil he says to the human being, "Disbelieve," then as soon as he disbelieves, he says, "I disown you. I fear GOD, Lord of the universe."

The first House (of worship) appointed for men was that at Bakka Full of blessing and of guidance for all kinds of beings
The most important shrine established for the people is the one in Becca; a blessed beacon for all the people.
Inna awwala baytin wudiAAa lilnnasilallathee bibakkata mubarakan wahudan lilAAalameena

In it are Signs Manifest; (for example), the Station of Abraham; whoever enters it attains security; Pilgrimage thereto is a duty men owe to Allah,- those who can afford the journey; but if any deny faith, Allah stands not in need of any of His creatures.
In it are clear signs the station of Abraham. Anyone who enters it shall be granted safe passage. The people owe it to GOD that they shall observe Hajj to this shrine, when they can afford it. As for those who disbelieve, GOD does not need anyone.
Feehi ayatun bayyinatunmaqamu ibraheema waman dakhalahu kana aminanwalillahi AAala alnnasi hijjualbayti mani istataAAa ilayhi sabeelan waman kafarafa-inna Allaha ghaniyyun AAani alAAalameena

These are the Signs of Allah We rehearse them to thee in Truth And Allah means no injustice to any of His creatures.
These are GOD's revelations; we recite them to you, truthfully. GOD does not wish any hardship for the people.
Tilka ayatu Allahinatlooha AAalayka bialhaqqi wama Allahuyureedu thulman lilAAalameena

Your Guardian-Lord is Allah, Who created the heavens and the earth in six days, and is firmly established on the throne (of authority) He draweth the night as a veil o'er the day, each seeking the other in rapid succession He created the sun, the moon, and the stars, (all) governed by laws under His command. Is it not His to create and to govern? Blessed be Allah, the Cherisher and Sustainer of the worlds!
Your Lord is the one GOD, who created the heavens and the earth in six days, then assumed all authority. The night overtakes the day, as it pursues it persistently, and the sun, the moon, and the stars are committed to serve by His command. Absolutely, He controls all creation and all commands. Most Exalted is GOD, Lord of the universe.
Inna rabbakumu Allahu allatheekhalaqa alssamawati waal-ardafee sittati ayyamin thumma istawa AAalaalAAarshi yughshee allayla alnnahara yatlubuhuhatheethan waalshshamsa waalqamara waalnnujoomamusakhkharatin bi-amrihi ala lahu alkhalqu waal-amrutabaraka Allahu rabbu alAAalameena

And among His Signs is the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the variations in your languages and your colours verily in that are Signs for those who know.
Among His proofs are the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the variations in your languages and your colors. In these, there are signs for the knowledgeable.
Wamin ayatihi khalqu alssamawatiwaal-ardi waikhtilafu alsinatikumwaalwanikum inna fee thalika laayatinlilAAalimeena

It is Allah Who has made for you the earth as a resting place, and the sky as a canopy, and has given you shape- and made your shapes beautiful,- and has provided for you Sustenance, of things pure and good;- such is Allah your Lord. So Glory to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds!
GOD is the One who rendered the earth habitable for you, and the sky a formidable structure, and He designed you, and designed you well. He is the One who provides you with good provisions. Such is GOD your Lord; Most Exalted is GOD, Lord of the universe.
Allahu allathee jaAAala lakumual-arda qararan waalssamaa binaanwasawwarakum faahsana suwarakum warazaqakummina alttayyibati thalikumu Allahurabbukum fatabaraka Allahu rabbu alAAalameenaMankind and God esp with associations of the Day of Recompense 296
And if any strive (with might and main), they do so for their own souls for Allah is free of all needs from all creation.
Those who strive, strive for their own good. GOD is in no need of anyone.
Waman jahada fa-innama yujahidulinafsihi inna Allaha laghaniyyun AAani alAAalameena

Then there are among men such as say, "We believe in Allah"; but when they suffer affliction in (the cause of) Allah, they treat men's oppression as if it were the Wrath of Allah! And if help comes (to thee) from thy Lord, they are sure to say, "We have (always) been with you!" Does not Allah know best all that is in the hearts of all creation?
Among the people there are those who say, "We believe in GOD," but as soon as they suffer any hardship because of GOD, they equate the people's persecution with GOD's retribution. But if blessings from your Lord come your way, they say, "We were with you." Is GOD not fully aware of the people's innermost thoughts?
Wamina alnnasi man yaqoolu amannabiAllahi fa-itha oothiya fee AllahijaAAala fitnata alnnasi kaAAathabi Allahiwala-in jaa nasrun min rabbika layaqoolunna innakunna maAAakum awa laysa Allahu bi-aAAlama bimafee sudoori alAAalameena

And thou wilt see the angels surrounding the Throne (Divine) on all sides, singing Glory and Praise to their Lord. The Decision between them (at Judgment) will be in (perfect) justice, and the cry (on all sides) will be, "Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds!"
You will see the angels floating around the throne, glorifying and praising their Lord. After the equitable judgment is issued to all, it will be proclaimed "Praise be to GOD, Lord of the universe."
Watara almala-ikata haffeenamin hawli alAAarshi yusabbihoona bihamdirabbihim waqudiya baynahum bialhaqqi waqeelaalhamdu lillahi rabbi alAAalameena

He is the Living (One) There is no god but He Call upon Him, giving Him sincere devotion. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds!
He is the Living; there is no god except He. You shall worship Him alone, devoting your religion absolutely to Him alone. Praise be to GOD, Lord of the universe.

Since many have provided ample material to work with, I would expose only some conclusions based on the verses cited before.
For the word "ar-rahman"
I consider it to be "the original and the ultimate cause". An example could be like in running a computer simulation, you set all the parameters in advance, with a known set of rules or an algorithm, and you press ENTER, then the simulation begins instantly. (see 551-4 "552 ?llama al-quraan = defined the set of rules/laws )
The word "ar-rahim"
I don't know of a word in english for it, but I consider it to be like "the provider of the necessary hardwar" for the incubation of the simulation above. Like the womb and the baby.
The word "al-?lamin"
This one, I'm almost sure it means "the knowledgables". It's the plural of "?leem" as in "rahim" plural "rahimin" (7151 1264)

where ever the word 'baa (with) ' appears it is always connected to a verb which may be apparent or hidden. in the above example it is hidden and is implied. the verb is 'ashra oo (I begin)' and is implied at the end of the sentence since God's name is the most important part and so naturally is at the beginning.
correct translation is therefore ' with the name of Allah the most merciful the benificent I begin'

This sura starts out with 'al-hamd' , a certain emotion which leads to looking for Allah who is
- rabb al-alameen
- ar-rahmaan and ar-raheem
- maliki yaum-ad-deen.
So here we're moving from recognition of 'rabb' (role of parenting in a cosmic sense) to ar-rahmaan and ar-raheem put together.
Then, we move to maliki yaum-ad-deen, our relationship with Allah is mentioned for the first time.
Next, verse 4 which says 'to you alone we serve and to you alone we seek 'istaan'. To me, the 'and' or 'wa' here is best translated as 'that is', i.e. 'na'budu' and 'nastain' are one and the same thing. 51/56 clarifies this by saying we are created ONLY to serve him, which means there's nothing else but serving Him. This is our relationship as a response to verse 3 above.
Verses 5 moves us towards this path which we defined in verse 4 and verse 6 shows indicators of that path.
Insha Allah, if we look at this 'flow' of sura 1, we will get a better feel of it, imho.

With pleasure I see that the project is slowly developing And must admit that I have already benefited a lot from an in-depth analysis of some of the Quranic terms and the comments that have appeared here and in other threads. I am sure that more is to come! I may be a bit sad that "alamin" does not necessarily mean "worlds" (it suited so nicely the dream people have of life on other planets...) but the truth should be more important than our wishful thinking.
I would like to suggest a closer look at the term connected with "alaamin" from 12, namely Rabb. Parwez stressed the importance of "Rabb" and "Rabubiyyat". Please look at http//www.toluislam.com/pub_online/exposition/glossary_o_to_r.htm#_Toc428590298. Any opinions?
Definitely, a closer look at the Quranic context would give us more information. Insha Allah, I will prepare that for us soon (unless somebody will be faster ).

What do you think about Omar's (pp.540-541) differentiation between malik and maalik (with an alif) that is, that the former refers to a king, and the latter a master (alif adding to an 'intensity'). Am I wrong or is it the only occurance of "maalik" in the Quran? If Omar's suggestion is right then the translation of "nabudu" into "(we) serve" would be more proper since no-one "worships" a master... But then, on the other hand, no-one worships a king either ?
I am in the process of preparing some materials on "yaumi ad-din" and "din" itself. So please be ready too! From the suggestions so far (and Aaron, thanks for your mail!), you tend to think in the same direction as I have in mind, i.e. that "yaum" does not imply a "day" but rather a more or less specific length of time e.g "era". Hope that it will get clearer, God willing.

The Religion before Allah is Islam (submission to His Will) Nor did the People of the Book dissent therefrom except through envy of each other, after knowledge had come to them. But if any deny the Signs of Allah, Allah is swift in calling to account.
The only religion approved by GOD is "Submission." Ironically, those who have received the scripture are the ones who dispute this fact, despite the knowledge they have received, due to jealousy. For such rejectors of GOD's revelations, GOD is most strict in reckoning.
Inna alddeena AAinda Allahial-islamu wama ikhtalafa allatheena ootooalkitaba illa min baAAdi ma jaahumualAAilmu baghyan baynahum waman yakfur bi-ayati Allahifa-inna Allaha sareeAAu alhisabi446
Of the Jews there are those who displace words from their (right) places, and say "We hear and we disobey"; and "Hear what is not Heard"; and "Ra'ina"; with a twist of their tongues and a slander to Faith. If only they had said "What hear and we obey"; and "Do hear"; and "Do look at us"; it would have been better for them, and more proper; but Allah hath cursed them for their Unbelief; and but few of them will believe.
Among those who are Jewish, some distort the words beyond the truth, and they say, "We hear, but we disobey," and "Your words are falling on deaf ears," and "Raa'ena (be our shepherd)," as they twist their tongues to mock the religion. Had they said, "We hear, and we obey," and "We hear you," and "Unzurna (watch over us)," it would have been better for them, and more righteous. Instead, they have incurred condemnation from GOD due to their disbelief. Consequently, the majority of them cannot believe.
Mina allatheena hadoo yuharrifoonaalkalima AAan mawadiAAihi wayaqooloona samiAAnawaAAasayna waismaAA ghayra musmaAAin waraAAinalayyan bi-alsinatihim wataAAnan fee alddeeni walawannahum qaloo samiAAna waataAAna waismaAAwaonthurna lakana khayranlahum waaqwama walakin laAAanahumu Allahubikufrihim fala yu/minoona illa qaleelan729
Say "My Lord hath commanded justice; and that ye set your whole selves (to Him) at every time and place of prayer, and call upon Him, making your devotion sincere as in His sight such as He created you in the beginning, so shall ye return."
Say, "My Lord advocates justice, and to stand devoted to Him alone at every place of worship. You shall devote your worship absolutely to Him alone. Just as He initiated you, you will ultimately go back to Him."

As to those who believed but came not into exile, ye owe no duty of protection to them until they come into exile; but if they seek your aid in religion, it is your duty to help them, except against a people with whom ye have a treaty of mutual alliance. And (remember) Allah seeth all that ye do.
Surely, those who believed, and emigrated, and strove with their money and their lives in the cause of GOD, as well as those who hosted them and gave them refuge, and supported them, they are allies of one another. As for those who believe, but do not emigrate with you, you do not owe them any support, until they do emigrate. However, if they need your help, as brethren in faith, you shall help them, except against people with whom you have signed a peace treaty. GOD is Seer of everything you do.
Inna allatheena amanoo wahajaroowajahadoo bi-amwalihim waanfusihim fee sabeeli Allahiwaallatheena awaw wanasaroo ola-ikabaAAduhum awliyao baAAdin waallatheenaamanoo walam yuhajiroo ma lakum min walayatihimmin shay-in hatta yuhajiroo wa-ini istansarookumfee alddeeni faAAalaykumu alnnasru illaAAala qawmin baynakum wabaynahum meethaqun waAllahubima taAAmaloona baseerun911
But (even so), if they repent, establish regular prayers, and practise regular charity,- they are your brethren in Faith (thus) do We explain the Signs in detail, for those who understand.
If they repent and observe the Contact Prayers (Salat) and give the obligatory charity (Zakat), then they are your brethren in religion. We thus explain the revelations for people who know.

The count of months, as far as GOD is concerned, is twelve. This has been GOD's law, since the day He created the heavens and the earth. Four of them are sacred. This is the perfect religion; you shall not wrong your souls (by fighting) during the Sacred Months. However, you may declare all-out war against the idol worshipers (even during the Sacred Months), when they declare all-out war against you, and know that GOD is on the side of the righteous.
Inna AAiddata alshshuhoori AAinda Allahiithna AAashara shahran fee kitabi Allahiyawma khalaqa alssamawati waal-ardaminha arbaAAatun hurumun thalika alddeenualqayyimu fala tathlimoo feehinna anfusakumwaqatiloo almushrikeena kaffatan kama yuqatiloonakumkaffatan waiAAlamoo anna Allaha maAAaalmuttaqeena9122
Nor should the Believers all go forth together if a contingent from every expedition remained behind, they could devote themselves to studies in religion, and admonish the people when they return to them,- that thus they (may learn) to guard themselves (against evil).
When the believers mobilize, not all of them shall do so. A few from each group shall mobilize by devoting their time to studying the religion. Thus, they can pass the knowledge on to their people when they return, that they may remain religiously informed.
Wama kana almu/minoonaliyanfiroo kaffatan falawla nafara min kullifirqatin minhum ta-ifatun liyatafaqqahoo fee alddeeniwaliyunthiroo qawmahum itha rajaAAoo ilayhimlaAAallahum yahtharoona1022
He it is Who enableth you to traverse through land and sea; so that ye even board ships;- they sail with them with a favourable wind, and they rejoice thereat; then comes a stormy wind and the waves come to them from all sides, and they think they are being overwhelmed they cry unto Allah, sincerely offering (their) duty unto Him saying, "If thou dost deliver us from this, we shall truly show our gratitude!"
He is the One who moves you across the land and sea. You get onto the ships, and they sail smoothly in a nice breeze. Then, while rejoicing therein, violent wind blows, and the waves surround them from every side. This is when they implore GOD, sincerely devoting their prayers to Him alone "If You only save us this time, we will be eternally appreciative."
Huwa allathee yusayyirukum feealbarri waalbahri hatta ithakuntum fee alfulki wajarayna bihim bireehin tayyibatinwafarihoo biha jaat-ha reehunAAasifun wajaahumu almawju min kulli makaninwathannoo annahum oheeta bihimdaAAawoo Allaha mukhliseena lahu alddeenala-in anjaytana min hathihi lanakoonanna mina alshshakireena1240
"If not Him, ye worship nothing but names which ye have named,- ye and your fathers,- for which Allah hath sent down no authority the command is for none but Allah He hath commanded that ye worship none but Him that is the right religion, but most men understand not...
"You do not worship beside Him except innovations that you have made up, you and your parents. GOD has never authorized such idols. All ruling belongs to GOD, and He has ruled that you shall not worship except Him. This is the perfect religion, but most people do not know.
Ma taAAbudoona min doonihi illaasmaan sammaytumooha antum waabaokumma anzala Allahu biha min sultaninini alhukmu illa lillahi amara allataAAbudoo illa iyyahu thalika alddeenualqayyimu walakinna akthara alnnasi layaAAlamoona1652
To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and on earth, and to Him is duty due always then will ye fear other than Allah?

So establish regular Prayer, give regular Charity, and hold fast to Allah! He is your Protector - the Best to protect and the Best to help!
You shall strive for the cause of GOD as you should strive for His cause. He has chosen you and has placed no hardship on you in practicing your religion - the religion of your father Abraham. He is the one who named you "Submitters" originally. Thus, the messenger shall serve as a witness among you, and you shall serve as witnesses among the people. Therefore, you shall observe the Contact Prayers (Salat) and give the obligatory charity (Zakat), and hold fast to GOD; He is your Lord, the best Lord and the best Supporter.
Wajahidoo fee Allahi haqqajihadihi huwa ijtabakum wama jaAAalaAAalaykum fee alddeeni min harajin millata abeekumibraheema huwa sammakumu almuslimeena min qabluwafee hatha liyakoona alrrasoolu shaheedanAAalaykum watakoonoo shuhadaa AAala alnnasifaaqeemoo alssalata waatoo alzzakatawaiAAtasimoo biAllahi huwa mawlakumfaniAAma almawla waniAAma alnnaseeru2965
Now, if they embark on a boat, they call on Allah, making their devotion sincerely (and exclusively) to Him; but when He has delivered them safely to (dry) land, behold, they give a share (of their worship to others)!-
When they ride on a ship, they implore GOD, devoting their prayers to Him. But as soon as He saves them to the shore, they revert to idolatry.
Fa-itha rakiboo fee alfulki daAAawooAllaha mukhliseena lahu alddeena falammanajjahum ila albarri itha hum yushrikoona3030
So set thou thy face steadily and truly to the Faith (establish) Allah's handiwork according to the pattern on which He has made mankind no change (let there be) in the work (wrought) by Allah that is the standard Religion but most among mankind understand not.
Therefore, you shall devote yourself to the religion of strict monotheism. Such is the natural instinct placed into the people by GOD. Such creation of GOD will never change. This is the perfect religion, but most people do not know.
Faaqim wajhaka lilddeeni haneefanfitrata Allahi allatee fatara alnnasaAAalayha la tabdeela likhalqi Allahi thalikaalddeenu alqayyimu walakinna akthara alnnasila yaAAlamoona3132
When a wave covers them like the canopy (of clouds), they call to Allah, offering Him sincere devotion. But when He has delivered them safely to land, there are among them those that halt between (right and wrong). But none reject Our Signs except only a perfidious ungrateful (wretch)!
When violent waves surround them, they implore GOD, sincerely devoting their prayers to Him alone. But as soon as He saves them to the shore, some of them revert. None discards our revelations except those who are betrayers, unappreciative.
Wa-itha ghashiyahum mawjun kaalththulalidaAAawoo Allaha mukhliseena lahu alddeenafalamma najjahum ila albarri faminhum muqtasidunwama yajhadu bi-ayatina illakullu khattarin kafoorin335
Call them by (the names of) their fathers that is juster in the sight of Allah. But if ye know not their father's (names, call them) your Brothers in faith, or your maulas. But there is no blame on you if ye make a mistake therein (what counts is) the intention of your hearts and Allah is Oft-Returning, Most Merciful.
You shall give your adopted children names that preserve their relationship to their genetic parents. This is more equitable in the sight of GOD. If you do not know their parents, then, as your brethren in religion, you shall treat them as members of your family. You do not commit a sin if you make a mistake in this respect; you are responsible for your purposeful intentions. GOD is Forgiver, Most Merciful.

Verily it is We Who have revealed the Book to thee in Truth so serve Allah, offering Him sincere devotion.

Is it not to Allah that sincere devotion is due? But those who take for protectors other than Allah (say) "We only serve them in order that they may bring us nearer to Allah." Truly Allah will judge between them in that wherein they differ. But Allah guides not such as are false and ungrateful.
Absolutely, the religion shall be devoted to GOD alone. Those who set up idols beside Him say, "We idolize them only to bring us closer to GOD; for they are in a better position!" GOD will judge them regarding their disputes. GOD does not guide such liars, disbelievers.

The idol worshipers will greatly resent what you invite them to do. GOD redeems to Himself whomever He wills; He guides to Himself only those who totally submit.

What! have they partners (in godhead), who have established for them some religion without the permission of Allah? Had it not been for the Decree of Judgment, the matter would have been decided between them (at once). But verily the Wrong-doers will have a grievous Penalty.
They follow idols who decree for them religious laws never authorized by GOD. If it were not for the predetermined decision, they would have been judged immediately. Indeed, the transgressors have incurred a painful retribution.

Allah forbids you not, with regard to those who fight you not for (your) Faith nor drive you out of your homes, from dealing kindly and justly with them for Allah loveth those who are just.
GOD does not enjoin you from befriending those who do not fight you because of religion, and do not evict you from your homes. You may befriend them and be equitable towards them. GOD loves the equitable.
La yanhakumu AllahuAAani allatheena lam yuqatilookum fee alddeeniwalam yukhrijookum min diyarikum an tabarroohum watuqsitooilayhim inna Allaha yuhibbu almuqsiteena609
Allah only forbids you, with regard to those who fight you for (your) Faith, and drive you out of your homes, and support (others) in driving you out, from turning to them (for friendship and protection). It is such as turn to them (in these circumstances), that do wrong.
GOD enjoins you only from befriending those who fight you because of religion, evict you from your homes, and band together with others to banish you. You shall not befriend them. Those who befriend them are the transgressors.

And they have been commanded no more than this To worship Allah, offering Him sincere devotion, being true (in faith); to establish regular prayer; and to practise regular charity; and that is the Religion Right and Straight.
All that was asked of them was to worship GOD, devoting the religion absolutely to Him alone, observe the contact prayers (Salat), and give the obligatory charity (Zakat). Such is the perfect religion.

yawmi - deals with an unspecified amount of time
alddeeni - the system (the order of the God's Laws of cause and effect).

I take it to mean that until you bring order to the chaos by implementing the God's system based on cause and effect, you recieve the "wrath" of your ignorance, you get tossed around helplessly.

I think that we ignore that the word "Din" is coming for the root d-y-n which also occurs in verse 282 of Sura 2, the longest verse in the Quran and its dealing with DEBTS and the root itself is connected to the meanings arround debts.
what do you think about this?

I would like to hear others understanding of "deen" as well.
I do not like "debt" because it gives me the feel of the God "needing" something from me, and I no that the God needs nothing.
The occurences of the word seem to imply a system to me, so I go with system. I am looking for any better info that any of you have.

if we would go in our analysis by what we like and what we don't like, then I'd tell you that I don't like the word "system" because it gives me the impression about me being a robot programmed.
Anyway that's not the point the point is that this word is used in 2282 in a context of debts. Would you explain what does this word mean to you in 2282? if we have a system we should write it down? would you read 2282 and tell me what you think?
edit Even if God needs nothing, it could be your debts to your environment, you get from your environment things, and you give your environment back. On "yawm aldeen" we would give back our debts to other, not to God, coz as u said, God needs nothing.

When I looked up the occurences, 2282 was not listed as an occurence of this root, it could be that the site is incorrect, I would ask that someone verify this for me.
Is there another verse that is already on this list that implies debt?
Regarding system, you might feel like a robot, but everyone has a system for what they do. The process of cooking food is a system, do you feel like a robot when you do that?

All what i wanted to say, that many things can appeal to individuals and that shouldn't be our measure when analysing the text of the Quran. I hope u understood what I meant by that.
Well the site of burhan is a great help but its not 100% a complete reference. I'd say burhan did a very great job and thanks God that his site exists to help many people but it contains many errors and many roots which are not completely gathered.
So if you can show me something from Quran that gives me a hint that deen is a system i'd appreciate that so much, but just stating that it appeals to you like that, might help you, but not me nor the others.

I used to understand "din" as system until just before reading the last part of the discussion going on.
But from what I have read, I would change my understanding.
Debt or obligation seems to fit better in context.
Humans generaly feel like owing something to some higher entity, and thus they want to pay back their debt. Remember that we come to this world concious about the god and submiting unwillingly (or willingly??) to his laws.
The least that we can count as a debt, is for the care we had received from our parents or whomever used to nurish us when we were babies, to bring us to this position to be able to discuss such things. And be sure that those people (parents, family...) are put in our way (or we are put in the way of eachothers) by the will of the god, nothing is coincidence.
When we want to pay back our debt, here we find the different so-called spokesman of this or that god, trying to take profit of the need to pay back our debt. Some ask for sacrifices, others for money, other for objetcs... wanting us to serve this or that god.
We have to live our lives and leave this world in complete submission to the god the creator, like the way we entered it. This is our debt.
The praise is to the god the lord of the kwoledgeables.

So if the above is a derivative, then we are looking for a word that is similar to debt, but not debt. Is that right?
