    Salaam all,

This is the first time I visited www.masjidtucson.org and the first time I try to look at the translation by Rashad Khalifa and surprisingly found his translation weird.

For some reason I initially wanted to check the translation for 4102-103 and I found this.

    4102

4102 When you are with them, and lead the Contact Prayer (Salat) for them, let some of you stand guard; let them hold their weapons, and let them stand behind you as you prostrate. Then, let the other group that has not prayed take their turn praying with you, while the others stand guard and hold their weapons. Those who disbelieved wish to see you neglect your weapons and your equipment, in order to attack you once and for all. You commit no error, if you are hampered by rain or injury, by putting down your weapons, so long as you remain alert. GOD has prepared for the disbelievers a shameful retribution.

4102 And if you are with them and you hold the contact prayer for them, then let a group from among them stand with you and let them bring their weapons; and when they have prostrated then let them be behind you; and let a group who has not yet made the contact prayer come and make the contact prayer with you, and let them be wary and let them bring their weapons with them. The rejecters hope that you would neglect your weapons and goods so they can come upon you in one blow. There is no sin upon you if you are impeded by rainfall, or if you are ill, that you place down your weapons. And be wary. God has prepared for the rejecters a humiliating retribution.

Please look at the highlighted part both translations shows different direction.

    4103

4103 Once you complete your Contact Prayer (Salat), you shall remember GOD while standing, sitting, or lying down.* Once the war is over, you shall observe the Contact Prayers (Salat); the Contact Prayers (Salat) are decreed for the believers at specific times.

4103 So, when you have completed the contact prayer, then remember God while standing, or sitting, or on your sides. So, when you are relieved, then hold the contact prayer. Indeed, the contact prayer for the believers is a timed schedule.

How the same word "AlSalaat" become singular and plural in Rashad's translation? When we are not allowed to make a tiny change to Allah's words.

I think, people love playing with Allah's word and enjoy twisting them, Ma'aazAllah!!!

May Allah increase us all in knowledge and guide us all to His true path pr

      Peace,

That is not the only error, here is another error (which is very big in my opinion), just check how the word isran is used

GOD never burdens a soul beyond its means to its credit is what it earns, and against it is what it commits. "Our Lord, do not condemn us if we forget or make mistakes. Our Lord, and protect us from blaspheming against You, like those before us have done. Our Lord, protect us from sinning until it becomes too late for us to repent. Pardon us and forgive us. You are our Lord and Master. Grant us victory over the disbelieving people."

La yukallifu Allahu nafsan illa wusAAaha laha ma kasabat waAAalayha ma iktasabat rabbana la tuakhithna in naseena aw akhtana rabbana wala tahmil AAalayna isran kama hamaltahu AAala allatheena min qablina rabbana wala tuhammilna ma la taqata lana bihi waoAAfu AAanna waighfir lana wairhamna anta mawlana faonsurna AAala alqawmi alkafireena (2286)

"(4) follow the messenger, the gentile prophet (Muhammad), whom they find written in their Torah and Gospel.* He exhorts them to be righteous, enjoins them from evil, allows for them all good food, and prohibits that which is bad, and unloads the burdens and the shackles imposed upon them. Those who believe in him, respect him, support him, and follow the light that came with him are the successful ones."

Allatheena yattabiAAoona alrrasoola alnnabiyya alommiyya allathee yajidoonahu maktooban AAindahum fee alttawrati waalinjeeli yamuruhum bialmaAAroofi wayanhahum AAani almunkari wayuhillu lahumu alttayyibati wayuharrimu AAalayhimu alkhabaitha wayadaAAu AAanhum israhum waalaghlala allatee kanat AAalayhim faallatheena amanoo bihi waAAazzaroohu wanasaroohu waittabaAAoo alnnoora allathee onzila maAAahu olaika humu almuflihoona (7157)

So the word isran suddenly changes from burden to blaspheming against you ?

My opinion is that you shouldn't rely on one translation, even free minds has mistranslations. I don't rely on his translation since he also uttered the words "the soul is a piece of God" which I can hardly get through my throat!

      Peace

        Salaam brother and welcome

Oh! That is very strange, he did the same as other translators. But I did not understand how he landed up with blaspheming against you for isra? Anyways, thanks for the quote brother.

o where did you find this? It is really very hard to get through the throat. And yes, I agree that we cannot rely on a single translation.

I don't think it's a good idea to start condeming translations, because all of them will have some kind of error in them.
~ A copy is never the same as the original ~

Also, about the soul, i think it is refering to "rouh", which is from His Supreme, High Majesty Himself, as he blow from his "rouh" (maybe energy/life force), into the human being, which then became alive.

The soul is God. And while he probably means that all souls are one, and God, he uses "part of God", while God is not in parts. I just discussed how Rashad would probably realize that God is consciousness, sooner or later. (inshaAllah). If one realizes the soul is God, and one realizes that one is the soul, one knows that God is consciousness. And that is what 329 states. Ruh gives mind, perception, senses.

"I am We, (all consciousness, ) and create everything".

                Peace.

                  Salaam brother,

We are not condemning translation of any, but we are trying to show the twist made with the word of Allah. The translator changed the whole concept of that aayat, please read my first post and look closely at the highlighted part, the translator changed its meaning and deviate from the original meaning &

By pointing out this, it may help others who are dependent on his translation. Thats all is my intention.

Your point is understandable. Nevertheless, i do not think it was intentional of the translators to "twist" the word of the Almighty! However, it is still a nice idea to pinpoint errors of the translators.
In that sense, i will point out in RK's translation that he left out the reason for the christians "hermitism" which was too seek his Most Blessed, High Majesty's Mercy.

Also, about "rouh", the Almighty states that he blow from HIS rouh. So in the sense, this rouh is from His Supreme, High Majesty Himself.

                          Salaam brother,

It is very simple to understand "His Rooh" does not mean "a piece of Allah" because what means "His Messenger", does this also mean a piece of Allah? &

His Rooh = Rooh sent by Allah
His Messenger = Messenger sent by Allah

Thats the dumbest thing I`ve heard. You have to overlook quite a bit of Quranic logic, to make Ruh, not God.

You can just as easily say

Ruh of Allah = spirit of Allah, the same way
face of Allah, = Allahs face. It is Allah. (ofcourse dealing with dumbness like this, I guess I should add that face is used in a metaphorical sense, so is hands, and similar in the Quran. God is immaterial/dimensionless/nothing.

"There is not complication at all."

If you are praying for guidance, you better break open your eyes.

(And stop your indiscriminate tampering with Quranic text.)

The term "spirit" is used because it is immaterial. You could also say that "he placed of his own nature in you, and gave you mind, senses, perception" etc. Doesn`t quite have the same poetical ring, and ruh is already used in previous version of scripture as ruach, meaning wind, referring to breath. Which again refers to the transcendent immesurable lifeforce, in us all.

Consciousness can not be a machine. Regardless of how many parts you put in a machine, it is not conscious. So consciousness must be the infinite. And the infinite can only be one, as allmight can only belong to one. And the infinite is nothing, because an infinite series does not have a beginning, and so there is no series. I just covered this in my "cosmological argument" thread, which you can read, if you are at that level.

Never mind this meandering that Ruh supposedly isn`t God. Mindless tampering with divine text.

If we try to understand that Ruh is breath, and gives consciousness.

If we say, Allah breathes into bodies, of his breath, whatever gives Allah consciousness is what gives you consciousness. Ofcourse Allah does not breathe, the body breathes. It`s a sign of life. So the whole statement is a metaphor. And the fact of divine consciousness, is most clear in these verses, but they are still just hinted at in the rest of the Quran. And when they ask about Ruh, they get the answer that they have been given little knowledge. Indeed, it is not known.

Theres plenty of hints in the Quran though. Arguing my viewpoint here where the Quran should be so known, shouldnt be neccesary. Everyone knows the verse, he is closer to you than your jugular vein. The jugular vein is often associated with life. But he is closer. The one with insight understands this to be the immaterial lifeforce/ruh.

                              ..

And this is the esoteric core of all worlds religions, and many philosophies. And really it shouldn``t be too hard to understand that an allmighty being has allpower, that means that your own will, is his. Your mind is his mind. Your perception is his perception. And eveything must be created by this only consciousness.

                              Peace.

Al-Quran is not a guide for you. It is a toy to you, which you change around, and claim validity of your actions.

Thus qouting ayas wont "prove" anything. And even if I would you arent reading my posts, else you would see that I already qouted the verse you qouted.

Hello man axhandle, we say in norwegian when this happens. It pretty much means that the dialogue is nonsense from the other part.

Translation of Dr.Khalifa is not a literal translation? For your information he had read/studied many translations before attempting to translate his translation.

Arabic was his native language. He was educated person? He knew about 2286, 7147 plus other verses how have been translated?it?s naivety of anybody who thinks he made such a mistake!

One of the best proofs is his translation of 2215?If he wanted translate word by word he couldn?t come up with such a meaningful translation?here I just quote 2 translations comparing to his
Dr.Khalifa- If anyone thinks that GOD cannot support him in this life and in the Hereafter, let him turn completely to (his Creator in) heaven, and sever (his dependence on anyone else). He will then see that this plan eliminates anything that bothers him.

Pickthall-2215- Whoso is wont to think (through envy) that Allah will not give him (Muhammad) victory in the world and the Hereafter (and is enraged at the thought of his victory), let him stretch a rope up to the roof (of his dwelling), and let him hang himself. Then let him see whether his strategy dispelleth that whereat he rageth!.

Yusuf Ali-2215- If any think that God will not help him (His Apostle) in this world and the Hereafter, let him stretch out a rope to the ceiling and cut (himself) off then let him see whether his plan will remove that which enrages (him).

Glory be to God for His guidance, each time I see some criticism of Dr.Khalifa translation after investigating more my faith in him become stronger. The below translation made me weeks to analyze the words of ?aydn and khalfan?.I finally noticed how poor and wrong these two words have been translated by Layth& Edip and freeminds.

                                    Here is their translation
1964 "And we are not sent except by the authority of your Lord. To Him are our present and our future, and all that is in-between. And your Lord was never to forget."

Dr.Khalifa- We do not come down except by the command of your Lord. To Him belongs our past, our future, and everything between them. Your Lord is never forgetful.

Can you notice the mistake of their translation? Does that make sense to you? Please check all the verses where those two words have been occurred ,see their understanding matches the context of the verses or not.

                                    Asana

A note about RK is that i think he did state/someone stated at his site that his translation was to "convey" the meaning of the Quran, and not the actual word for word (since it is the meaning that makes sense). AN example would be in the sake of God's "wajh", a literal translation would be "God's Face". However, the actual meaning can go along the lines of "God's sake".
Dr. Khalifa's translation is indeed a good translation, in that it is composed with understandable English.

The translation by RK is thoughtless. Further, his translation shows that RK did not know about the moods of verbs and also bothered little to understand about the subject of a verb and its object.

Anyone who has been thinking that Allah, the Exalted might not help him/the Messenger in future during the worldly life and the Hereafter, thereby he should find a source to ascend to the Sky, thereafter he should cover distance whereupon he should see/assess whether this move of him would remove away that what keeps enraging him.

The English RENDERING of the Holy Quran by Dr. Rashad Khalifa, PhD is simply the best there is, admitted even by some fierce opponents of his message and translation, as confessed by themselves.

                                          Example
1- His translation on many Noble Verses is actually very good and much better than many of the Islamic ones out there. Plus, he uses the accurate translation of "egg-shaped" for the Arabic word "dahaha" in Noble Verse 7930 to prove that Allah Almighty did indeed declare that He had made the earth into a spherical form."
                                          Source
Why do I use Rashad Khalifa's translation of the Noble Quran on the site?

(although I do not recommend this site, if you visit it, you'll see why...)

ALSO, there is an electronic program of the translation for the use on computer as a downloadable version
