    Salam to all,

I would like to have your opinions about artificial insemination
this subject has already been discussed years ago but I'm afraid I couldn't find enough information
that's why I would like to re-launch the subject and gather some more of your pertinent comments about artificial insemination

I'm asking you this because I wonder what is the position that Quran adopts regarding artificial insemination
I know that some of you guys will suggest to proceed in a more natural way but
what if I have no other option that A.I.? and I mean it I have no husband and will never have the opportunity to get married

is it a sin if I consider A.I.?

Thank you all for your precious help -)

      Greetings and Peace, all group

I'm not aware of anything prohibiting AI. It isn't lewd, nor does if fall under other prohibited activity. It is allowed, ISA.

This being said, AI is expensive. Why not adopt or foster if you want children? It should be a blessing to both yourself and the children. group

There is a partner for everyone, ISA. ALLAH knows best, so ask ALLAH to grant you what is best. Seek, and ISA you will find! )

May ALLAH see fit to guide all seekers.

Why would you never have the opportunity to get married? Are you sure of this fact?

My personal feeling is I have no issues with couples who can't conceive and have tried everything and they try this, lets face if Allah has not decreed it, you could try a million times and it will not work.

However, I do beleive a child deserves a father. Also have you thought of all the things your child will endure? I mean you will have to work to provide, less time with the child, so you will need to arrange daycare/babysitting. Trust me, full time work and motherhood.. for me SUCKS- I was a single parent for awhile it is not easy. Even married now it is not easy, but it is nice having help and a man in the house teaching my son, besides when I tell them something it is not the same as when he tells him, they listen to him more than me...lol

I am just asking you not to think in a selfish way. Of course you want to experience motherhood, I can't blame you it is a great thing. But make sure the child will not suffer. Studies show girls who grow-up with out a male rolemodel or father figure tend to have issues with male relations when they are older. Here are some other stats

63% of youth suicides are from fatherless homes (US Dept. Of Health/Census) 5 times the average.
90% of all homeless and runaway children are from fatherless homes 32 times the average.
85% of all children who show behavior disorders come from fatherless homes 20 times the average. (Center for Disease Control)
80% of rapists with anger problems come from fatherless homes --14 times the average. (Justice & Behavior, Vol 14, p. 403-26)
71% of all high school dropouts come from fatherless homes 9 times the average. (National Principals Association Report)
75% of all adolescent patients in chemical abuse centers come from fatherless homes 10 times the average. (Rainbows for All Gods Children)
70% of youths in state-operated institutions come from fatherless homes 9 times the average. (U.S. Dept. of Justice, Sept. 198
85% of all youths in prison come from fatherless homes 20 times the average. (Fulton Co. Georgia, Texas Dept. of Correction)

I am not telling what you should or should not do, but just giving you some things to think about. I am sorry I can't quote a bunch of Qu'ran to you. But I feel one of the reasons more than one wife was introduced was to help the children to be raised in stable environments and have the opportunity to have a mom and dad figure.

But if you have thought all this and you can provide and give the child their God given rights then do what you must. I do agree with maybe try foster parenting or adoption, many children have no one.

That has nothing to do with whether Quran prohibits it or not.

Welcome to the forum sister. group

I like this question which you asked. It's more difficult than people would think it is. And here?s why , if you look at Sura 2228

2228 The divorced women shall wait for three menstruation periods; and it is not lawful for them to conceal what God has created in their wombs, if they acknowledge God and the Last day. Their husbands are more justified to return to them, if they both wish to reconcile. The women have rights similar to their obligations, according to the recognized norms. But the men will have a degree over them. God is Noble, Wise.

Women are forbidden from CONCEALING that which is in there wombs from there ex-husbands. This verse highlights a key point that legally a believing woman must be married or previously married from before in order to have children in the first place.

How can you have a child and the father no where to found? Unless of course you are Mary (the mother of Jesus where the father never existed!) then legally Artificial insemination would be considered an act of lewdness since the woman is not even in contact with the father AND not even married to the father during the impregnation. Where in the scripture does it show that a woman can have children outside of marriage? There is no such verse in the Quran. So this would mean you HAVE TO BE married in order to have children in the first place. This is my take on the whole issue. Perhaps others can contribute to this thread to further clarify the matter since this is a question that I have never encountered from before. I may be wrong. However from my understanding marriage = children. This is my understanding from studying the Quran.

            Peace,

            Kevin.

              Greetings and Peace, all group

2228 And those divorced shall wait for three menstruation periods; and it is not lawful for them to conceal what GOD has created in their wombs, if they believe in GOD and the Last Day. And their husbands would then have just cause to return together, if they both wish to reconcile. And the obligations owed to them are to be fulfilled, as are the obligations owed by them. But the men will have a greater responsibility over them in this. And GOD is Noble, Wise.

If the person in question is not divorced, this will not apply. Further, there are women who are impregnated against their will. Not all pregnant women are married, nor should this be expected. Not all believers have always been believers. What of an unmarried pregant believer--new to Islam? What about a victim of bigamy? There are multiple scenarios where a believer could be pregnant without being married. Now that the argument is sufficiently debunked, other positions are presented.

2223 Your women are a cultivation for you. So approach your cultivation as you wish towards goodness. And be aware of God and know that you will meet Him, and give good news to the believers.

Does AQ 2223 apply only to men? If so, why? Does a woman have control over her body or not? hmm

1059 Say "Have you seen what GOD has sent down to you from provisions, then you have made some of it forbidden and some lawful?" Say "Did GOD authorize you, or do you invent lies about GOD?"

16116 And do not say, as to what your tongues falsely describe "This is lawful, and that is forbidden;" that you seek to invent lies about GOD. Those who invent lies about GOD will not succeed.

732 Say "Who has made unlawful the nice things that GOD has brought forth for His servants and the good provisions?" Say "They are meant for those who believe during this worldly life, and they will be exclusive for them on the Day of Resurrection." It is such that We explain the revelations for those who know.

AQ is complete, of that there is no doubt. If it isn't forbidden, it is allowed. Lewdness is forbidden. There is no evidence that AI is lewd. What is lewd is sometimes subjective. Examples follow

To some, dancing is lewd. If one takes dancing to be lewd--don't dance! Don't expect others not to dance, and understand that it is not correct to say that dancing is forbidden for all. Styles of dress vary the world over. What is modest in some places is vulgar/lewd in other places.

AQ does not give specific examples of all lawful things. It is a moot point that children outside of marriage are not mentioned in AQ. Computers aren't mentioned either. Better get rid of combustion engines, modern medicine, and a slew of other things not mentioned at the same time! <sarcasm> Seriously, avoid the forbidden things, all else is okay.

6151 Say "Come let me recite what your Lord has made unlawful for you that you should not set up anything with Him; and do good to your parents; and do not kill your children for fear of poverty, We provide for you and for them; and do not come near lewdness, what is evident of it and what is subtle; and do not take the life which GOD has made forbidden, except in justice. That is what He enjoined you that you may comprehend."

I agree with you brother that there are women who become pregnant other ways such as rape , bigamy etc. But I am not talking about that. I am talking about the women who willfully CHOOSE to take artificial insemination from a donor who THEY ARE NOT MARRIED TO. If you are married to a donor then to my understanding this will not be considered a lewd act. However if you are not married then it is lewd act since the donor is not your husband. This practice of artificial insemination to me is opening a door of confusion. If you say that artificial insemination is ok then to me you agree that its ok for a woman to be impregnated by a man WHO SHE NEVER LAID EYES ON NOR WAS SHE LEGALLY MARRIED TOO.

How is this legal? Where is it in the Quran does it say that women can have children when she has never been legally married before? I'm not talking about cases where women didn't have a choice but in cases when THEY DID HAVE CHOICE.

Nobody is not forbidding what God has made lawful. If you cannot have sex outside of marriage doesn't this mean that you cannot have children without being married first? A simple logical conclusion. It's basic common sense brother. Marriage and children must go hand in hand. Artificial insemination cannot be legal unless the donor is legally married to the woman who is to receive the treatment. It is only through the bond of marriage that women can have children. Anything outside of this would be considered a lewd act committed by the women except in cases where she had no choice(she was forced).

Yes, it sounds all lusty. I don't find evidence prohibiting it. What if the sperm donor was dead? Should she get married to a dead person? What of a married couple where the man is sterile and both husband and wife want children? Tough luck? A medical procedure exists that could allow children, but they can't have the procedure?

How is this legal? Where is it in the Quran does it say that women can have children when she has never been legally married before? I'm not talking about cases where women didn't have a choice but in cases when THEY DID HAVE CHOICE.

This point has already been addressed. If it isn't illegal, it is legal.

Nobody is not forbidding what God has made lawful. If you cannot have sex outside of marriage doesn't this mean that you cannot have children without being married first?

It depends on the definition of "sex" being used. Only by using a technical biological definition can AI be considered sex. In common usage, AI is not sex. Obviously, it IS possible to have children without being married. AI is hardly (pardon the pun) coitus.

                  A simple logical conclusion.

                  Oh, it's simple all right!

It's basic common sense brother. Marriage and children must go hand in hand.

Quranic evidence, please? I suppose that if a marriage does not result in children, the marriage is invalid? hmm Postmenopausal women/sterile men should NEVER get married, amirite--and a man married to a postmenopausal woman should quickly end the marriage and remarry in order to procreate???

Artificial insemination cannot be legal unless the donor is legally married to the woman who is to receive the treatment. It is only through the bond of marriage that women can have children. Anything outside of this would be considered a lewd act committed by the women except in cases where she had no choice(she was forced).

Although I don't feel that it is the best option, it is legal and not lewd. You may call it lewd, but nowhere does AQ call it lewd. If one is able to have and support children, it seems to be a righteous act to do so.

                  Peace,

                  Kevin

2433 And let those who are not able to marry continue to be chaste until GOD enriches them of His Bounty. And if those who are maintained by your oaths seek to consummate the marriage, then document it with them if you find that they are ready, and give them from the wealth of GOD which He has bestowed upon you. And do not force your young women to need if they have desired to be independent, in order that you may make a gain in the goods of this worldly life. And if anyone has compelled them, then for their compulsion, GOD is Forgiving, Merciful.

Definition of CHASTE innocent of unlawful sexual intercourse.

Is AI sexual intercourse? Even if it were, where is it made unlawful? Lack of evidence that a thing is lawful is insufficient to declare it unlawful--there MUST be direct evidence that it is unlawful for it to be so.

Did you have an opinion regarding AQ 2223?

There is little practical difference between a woman (who is capable of supporting children) who has AI and a married woman who has children and divorces/has a husband who dies. In all cases, the woman is a single parent.

Human opinion matters little--and not at all in the face of Quranic evidence.

                  ALLAH knows best.

Lets think of two women who had children by AI from the same donor. The children do not know who their father is but they are sisters and brothers. Since they don't know the truth they may marry. Marriage between sisters and brothers is forbidden in Qur'an.

                      Brother Abdul,

So basically you are saying that sexually intercourse outside of marriage is forbidden but to have AI through a man who is not your husband is? Are they not the same? The main function of Sexual intercourse is to have OFFSPRING. Why do you think God invented sex in the first place? Your interpretation is too narrow. Who does the sperm belong to? Didn't it come from A MAN? So doesn't that mean that the child that is born HAS A FATHER? And isn't it written in the Quran that a woman cannot hide that which is in her womb? Also doesn't the father also have legal rights to the child? What mother would deny the right of child to be with his father? ALL these questions you have missed in your response.

You are also failing to review a simple question which I asked. Was this woman married to this man? If this is legal then what is the difference between AI and premarital sex? Sex is used as tool to generate offspring. That is the MAIN FUNCTION OF SEX. So if a woman has AI procedure it is as if SHE DID HAVE SEXUAL INTERCOURSE since sexual reproduction occurs with an egg and a sperm. Whoever says otherwise must be reading from some other biology textbook that I am not aware of.

AI cannot be allowed since a woman cannot have children WITHOUT BEING MARRIED FIRST. Anything else would be considered a lewd act from my understanding.

Regarding your question about what if the donor was dead. The answer to that is simple. If the donor was woman's husband and he died then she is not married to him. The dead cannot marry the living. When your spouse dies you are legally single and free to marry whoever you wish. And besides, what would be the point of a married couple to go through AI in the first place? Can't they just have sex?

                      Peace,

                      Kevin

This is what I was talking about. This is why people should study the Quran more carefully so that when questions like these come up there would better derive a proper answer after looking at ALL THE ASPECTS. Some people like Abdul, think that sex is just pounding flesh. Isn't sex a practice that was invented to produce OFFSPRING? Isn't AI a tool to get OFFSPRING? So isn't sex and AI somewhat similar since both have the SAME RESULT? Also isn't AI a lewd act when a woman isn't married to the donor?

                        Peace,

                        Kevin

                          Brother Abdul,

So basically you are saying that sexually intercourse outside of marriage is forbidden but to have AI through a man who is not your husband is?

                          Yes.

                          Are they not the same?

                          No.

The main function of Sexual intercourse is to have OFFSPRING. Why do you think God invented sex in the first place? Your interpretation is too narrow. Who does the sperm belong to?

It belongs to the woman, once she buys/procures it. Before she bought it (if she bought it), it belonged to a sperm bank that also paid for it. It is the same case with blood and blood transfusions.

Didn't it come from A MAN?

Um, yes. Likewise, cow milk comes from a cow. When we buy the milk, ownership of the milk is now ours.

So doesn't that mean that the child that is born HAS A FATHER? And isn't it written in the Quran that a woman cannot hide that which is in her womb?

Context of hiding what is in her womb is a married couple. The child (in case of AI) legally speaking does not have a father--but may have a guardian (or no guardian--in any case, the donor has NOTHING to do with the child). If the sperm donor is deceased, there is definitely not a father in any sense of the word.

Also doesn't the father also have legal rights to the child? What mother would deny the right of child to be with his father? ALL these questions you have missed in your response.

The "father" is a donor and may be known or unknown, and may be living or dead. No legal right exists, and neither does the woman have any basis for child support. Many women DO deny visitation, especially after a nasty divorce--or if the father is a low life who doesn't support the child. Sometimes a parent is dangerous, other times a parent is deceased. Not all children have two living parents. I can't address questions until they are asked! )

You are also failing to review a simple question which I asked. Was this woman married to this man?

                          No.

If this is legal then what is the difference between AI and premarital sex?

AI is legal and not restricted in AQ. AI is a medical procedure, like a flu shot is a medical procedure. Premarital sex is coitus/sexual activity between a man and a woman, and is forbidden in AQ. Lust/sexual attraction is involved in premarital sex--not so in the medical procedure. Also, there is no "accidental" pregnancy in AI--pregnancy is the hoped-for outcome.

It was already a given that AI falls under the biological definition of sex--no dispute. It is a whole 'nother story to claim that it is sexual intercourse. AI is in no way sexual intercourse--even if the end result is the same. Both a camel and a bicycle can transport a person, but they are totally different.

AI cannot be allowed since a woman cannot have children WITHOUT BEING MARRIED FIRST. Anything else would be considered a lewd act from my understanding.

Thank you for sharing. Understandings and opinions vary--as do yours and mine on the matter of AI being a lewd act. AI is a personal and private decision for a woman to make, based on HER understanding.

I was presenting a case where the deceased donor of the sperm was not the woman's husband. It was a rhetorical point. Sometimes married couples need AI or IVF to have children (low sperm counts etc).

                          Peace,

                          Kevin

When the donor is known, there is no possibility of offspring marrying. If the donor is unknown, a DNA test can confirm that a prospective couple are not related.

A woman who utilizes AI is not unchaste. She should disclose the AI to a prospective partner, if she does get pregnant.

I would take the position that a married woman who gets AI with sperm other than her husband's without the knowledge and consent of her husband is approaching lewdness--but that is just my opinion.

                          ALLAH knows best.

                          peace

I agree with you for all the points you?ve made in your posts?.having children without being first married is not what God teaches us?.Some people are looking for a straightforward verse to say what?s permitted what?s not while they ignore the light of the Quran which can be seen only through studying the verses and system of God which is unchangeable.

Here in below verse we can clearly read what God teaches us, first marriage then children.

And GOD made for you spouses from among yourselves, and produced for you from your spouses children and grandchildren, and provided you with good provisions. Should they believe in falsehood, and turn unappreciative of GOD's blessings?

Since one should get married and then have children the act of AI is a sin and sin is Haram.

Say, "My Lord prohibits only evil deeds, be they obvious or hidden, and sins, and unjustifiable aggression, and to set up beside GOD powerless idols, and to say about GOD what you do not know."

Question is that now who really wish to go to hell just because wants to have a child like that when on the Judgment Day is ready to give her/his own child/children as ransom?

When they see them, the guilty will wish he could give his own children as ransom, to spare him the retribution of that day.

May God guide us to His True Light

                              Greetings and Peace, all group

1672 And GOD has made for you mates from among yourselves, and He has made from your mates sons and grandchildren, and He has provided you from the good provisions. Is it the falsehood that they believe in, while the favor of GOD they reject?

One hoped-for outcome of being married for most people is children. Where does AQ 1672 state that children are only possible or allowable from marriage? If this is not stated, it is an artificial boundary. If it is an artificial boundary, don't expect others to pay heed to it.

Indeed, taken literally--where do daughters come from? hmm 1672 is not saying that ONLY boys can come from a marriage and neither is it saying that children can ONLY come from marriage. Rain means wet streets, but wet streets do not mean rain.

699 And He is the One who sent down water from the heaven, and We brought out with it plants of every kind. We brought out from it the green, from which We bring out multiple seeds; and what is from the palm trees, from its sheaths hanging low and near; and gardens of grapes and olives and pomegranates, similar and not similar. Look at its fruit when it blossoms and its ripeness. In this are signs for a people who believe.

Are gardens limited to grapes/olives/pomegranates? Neither are children limited to spouses. Sexual intercourse is reserved for the married (per 2433, etc). AI is not sexual intercourse. AQ is specific where it needs to be.

Anything that has existed, does exist or will exist is by leave of ALLAH. AI is one such thing created. I find no compelling evidence that AI is prohibited. If AI is not prohibited it is allowed.

Also, unless there is a reason why 2223 does not apply, this proves that AI is positively acceptable and not "only" acceptable because it is not disallowed.

                              ALLAH knows best.

                              peace

i agree with Asana. The Quran has shown us that MARRIAGE is the only LEGAL way to have children. When people don't study the Quran carefully they become easily swayed to following teachings that are unethical and not legal in any form or fashion.

Look at this other verse for example

7029 Those who conceal their private parts.
7030 Except around their spouses or those committed to by oath, there is no blame.
7031 Then, whoever seeks anything beyond this, they are the transgressors

How can AI be allowed if this law is broken? Isn't AI a breach of this law when a women's wombs (which is a PRIVATE PART) becomes exposed to another man's semen OTHER THAN HER SPOUSES.

God says quite clearly Then, whoever seeks anything beyond this, they are the transgressors

Believers can only have children WITH THERE SPOUSES! If anyone says or does otherwise willfully they are violating the teachings of the Quran.

How can AI be allowed if this law is broken?

AQ 7029 is talking about modesty . A woman utilizing AI is not being immodest; neither is she "revealing" her private parts. It states nothing about children. Even if it did apply to producing children, 7030 talks about "or those committed by oath." Two points about this.

                                    1. Those persons committed by oath are not a spouse. This deflates the argument that "only a spouse can..."

                                    2. It is also interpreted as "what is rightfully possessed". Every person rightfully possesses their own body.

Isn't AI a breach of this law when a women's wombs (which is a PRIVATE PART) becomes exposed to another man's semen OTHER THAN HER SPOUSES.

Not in this case. There is no intercourse. There is no sexual contact between the man and the woman. An internal organ can't even be revealed/exposed to view. Even if internal organs could be exposed to view, professional interaction with medical personnel is hardly a forbidden action! Also, the semen is no longer the man's once purchased. It belongs to the purchaser.

God says quite clearly Then, whoever seeks anything beyond this, they are the transgressors

AQ does clearly state this. No dispute. The emphasis was superfluous.

Artificial insemination IS TOTALLY FORBIDDEN. You need to have a spouse to have children. This is what the Quran teaches us.

This is still not proven. AQ definitely teaches not to forbid what is not forbidden--and also not to say that something that is forbidden is allowed.

Why is it that some people cannot see that AI is a clear violation of what is taught in the Quran.

Perhaps because some people don't beg the question. If it isn't forbidden, it can't be forbidden even if everybody else on earth attempts to forbid it.

Marriage between a MAN AND WOMAN what is taught. Believers can only have children WITH THERE SPOUSES! If anyone says or does otherwise willfully they are violating the teachings of the Quran.

Marriage between a man and woman IS taught, and perhaps marriage is best--but this does not mean that it is the only way to have children lawfully.

                                    Peace,

                                    Kevin

May ALLAH see fit to increase us all in useful knowledge.

Question If a man divorced his wife and after an year she wanted a child from the same ex-husband, can she get A.I. from the divorced husband?

Sure, I don't see why not. It probably wouldn't be the best course of action, but it isn't forbidden.

                                        Salaam brother,

2230 So if he divorces her, then she will not be lawful for him until after she has married a different husband; if he divorces her; then there is no sin that they come back together if they think they will uphold the boundaries of God. These are the boundaries of God, He clarifies them for a people who know.

Even after she is not lawful for him? hmm

I see and understand your point. But they are hardly "together" and the donation would not make them sexual partners. If she needed a kidney and he donated one, it wouldn't be forbidden. If she wanted a cup of sugar/flour/whatever and he was willing, it wouldn't be forbidden. Why would this case be any different?

                                          ALLAH knows best.

                                          peace
