    Salam,

Any pointers as to what the definition of muslim in the Quran?

From what I know a muslim by definition is the following

    Sahih International
Say, "O People of the Scripture, come to a word that is equitable between us and you - that we will not worship except Allah and not associate anything with Him and not take one another as lords instead of Allah." But if they turn away, then say, "Bear witness that we are Muslims ."

Is there any other verse that defines a Muslim differently, or expands from this definition?

    Salam
    Johan

      Peace johan

      I hope the following helps

2357 ? surely those who are reverently concious of their Lord.?

      ( Is this a believer?)

2358 ? And who believe in the revelations of their Lord?

( How would you know which are the Words of GOD? Are you sure they are not the words of men? )

2359 ? And who never set up any Idols beside their Lord.?

( is this submission and total loyalty to GOD ALONE? )

2360 ? As they are seeking to help others ( get the most important priority right), their hearts are fully reverent for they recognise that they will be summoned before their Lord.?

2361 ? They are eager to do righteous works; They compete in doing them.?

There is also the example of Abraham who was called the first " muslim"? He said to his father( and people)

2677 ? ( All these Man made Religions!) I am against them , for I am devoted to the Lord of the universe.?

2678 ? The one who created me and guided me.?

2679 ?The one who feeds me and waters me.?

2680 ?And when I get sick , HE heals me.?

2681 ? The one who puts me to death, then brings me back to life.?

2682 ? The one who hopefully will forgive my sins on the day of judgement.?

Is " Islam" is a way of life, serving and staying loyal to the Creator?
      Peace

I don't know but I think there is a difference between a muslim(one who submitted?) and a mu'min(one who believed?), based on this verse

        Sahih International
The bedouins say, "We have Ammanna(believed.)" Say, "You have not believed; but say , 'We have Aslamna(submitted),' for faith has not yet entered your hearts. And if you obey Allah and His Messenger, He will not deprive you from your deeds of anything. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful."

so I want to know where the basis of the saying that a muslim has to say Lailaahaillah Mu7ammad Rasulullah..
couldn't those who were born christian, jewish, sabian (and optionally learned about the quran) but died as a christian, jewish or sabians, still be muslim?

          Peace johan.

I personally see a difference between " islam the religion" as practised by the majority of traditional muslims ( Shia, Sunni, ...) and the true "islam" which is submission to the creator, a way of life for the submitter/s.

I do not find " Lailaahaillah Mu7ammad Rasulullah.."anywhere in Koran. May be others will help you with this?

One stars with some belief when he/she submits. Then it is a journey and a trial by GOD .If one is sincere and perseveres , he/she acquires more belief, until he/she attains certainty if accepted by their creator. There is no initiation or middle man. It is between the submitter and HIS creator.

I hope I clarified what I posted earlier.
          Peace.

            Salam

Islam is not a special name, it simply means "submission" in the broad sense of knowledge. I will address this point more precisely. There are several aspects to be Muslim to be. There are three aspects of the divine law, and we accept the need to study to qualify as a Muslim.
Natural Law Study of the divine law of nature and environment
Social Security Study of the divine law, which we can find in social structures
Intellectual Law The intellectual decision to surrender ourselves to God

Islam is a way of life in the acceptance that God holds the ultimate authority. (God is not personifizierbar, an association with the choice of the word of God is given purely historical.) So the only way to life for God is Islam. (3.19-85). All messengers and prophets of God, together with their followers were Muslims regardless of historical period in which they live. 10.72, 2128, 10.84, 27.31, 5.111,72.14). This confirmation is given not only in Arabic, but in any language (14.4). The whole universe, including the material body of atheists who are Muslims, because everything on earth must obey God's law and in the universe. (41.11,13.15). The law of the universe is nothing other than Islam (3.83).

There is no ritual, ceremony, or "Shahada". Every soul that seeks the truth by using their intellect and their logic is, in essence Muslim. if a person acknowledges the authority Gods in universe, becomes a Muslim
But there is a wide difference between a "sleeper" Muslim who recognizes only the authority of God and an "awakened" Muslim who accepts God's law and operating under its authority.

Before we continue, we should be aware of the term "faith". What the Qur'an says about it? Faith can be better translated as "continuous learning and identify and implement." A believer is one who recognizes the truth, is constantly trying to learn and have learned this in his life is a mumin. a mumin stands against dogma , kingdoms, old patterns of thinking and traditions, or ideologies. Since God is the truth, a Mu'min (believer) is a critical thinker.

            mu'min
-Does not accept information without checking its veracity (17.36,6.116, 12.103/112)

-Are active, dynamic and courageous. (2.30-34,4.75-77,15.28-30)
-Are not selfish and proud (25.43,17.37)
            -Seek community unit (3.103,6.159,61.4)

            -Seek peace (2.208,4.90,8.61)
Discriminate against or harass anyone, (49.11/13) deal justly (4.58,135,5.8,6.152)
-Dressing discreetly (24.30/31), stay away from idle talk (23.4)

faith is not obeying a man-made religion, no, it's a process, a continual learning throughout our lives.

The highlight above is from me.

              Consider the two verses below.

              262,

Verily! Those who believe and those who are Jews and Christians, and Sabians, whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day and does righteous good deeds shall have their reward with their Lord, on them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve.

                @ johan -
you are correct to refer to that verse which indicates a different between a muslim and a momin. Muslim is clearly "entry-level" as compared to being 'Momin'.

                @ others -
Yes, nowhere in the Quran is "Lailaaha illallah Muhammad Rasulullah" written in one place - each phrase exists in the Quran but not together as one statement. The requirement to be a Muslim is to simply declare belief in Allah, the Last Day and do good works. According to Prof Donner, on this basis, Jews, Christians and Sabians were also considered to be amongst the Momineen (and this is evident from the Constitution of Medina where Jewish tribes are listed as amongst the Momineen, but they look to the Torah). Jews and Christians obeyed Muhammad, and referred to him as Amirul Momineen, along with the early Caliphs. As 'Amir" is not a religious title per se, and other monotheists were included in the definition of Momin, according to Prof Donner, they had no trouble with referring to Muhammad as Amirul Momineen and obeying him as a head of state type figure.

The first documentary evidence we have of the phrase "Lailaaha illallah Muhammad Rasulullah" is a coin stamped during the Caliphate of Malik Abdul Malik (a century and a half later?) which includes both of these phrases together. Mailk Abdul Malik introduced the notion that belief in Muhammad's messengership was necessary to be a Momin as well as Muslim, thus excluding Jews and Christians, and thus making Muslim = Momin. This was clearly an innovation, but one which prevails today. It was during this time, for the first time, that non-Muslims, even though they were monotheist, became 'kafir'.

                      @ johan -
you are correct to refer to that verse which indicates a different between a muslim and a momin. Muslim is clearly "entry-level" as compared to being 'Momin'.

One with faith/belief is called a MUMIN.
MUSLIM, on other hand means one who submits to Allah. The state of Muslim requires action of obedience, not just belief alone.

If we consider Muslim to be entry level then how would you explain this verse,

3102 O you who have believed/man, fear Allah as He should be feared and do not die except as Muslims.

If "muslim" is not considered entry level, then is the above verse stating one must attain the highest level before death i.e. anything less is failure? Seems a strict criteria.

If one is addressing those wavering, it is perhaps best to establish the entry level as the minimum, not imply anything less than maximum is failure.

All information is correct to the best of my knowledge only and thus should not be taken as a fact. One should always seek knowledge and verify for themselves when possible: 17:36, 20:114, 35:28, 49:6, 58:11.

                          Peace Wakas,

Yes one must strive to attain the highest level before death, and all believers would be tested time and again. But it does not mean that Mumin would not be rewarded,

82-4 The believers are those whom, when God is mentioned, their hearts reverence; and when His revelations are recited to them, it increases their faith; and they put their trust in their Lord. They honor the connection, and from Our provisions to them they spend. These are the true believers; they will have grades with their Lord and a forgiveness and a generous provision.

So in case we consider Mumin to be entry level, the reward is mentioned for them too.

                            Salam,
Any pointers as to what the definition of muslim in the Quran?
Is there any other verse that defines a Muslim differently, or expands from this definition?
                            Salam
                            Johan

Say, "We believe in GOD, and in what was sent down to us, and in what was sent down to Abraham, Ismail, Isaac, Jacob, and the Patriarchs; and in what was given to Moses and Jesus, and all the prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction among any of them. To Him alone we are submitters."

The Arabs said, "We are Mu'mens (believers)." Say, "You have not believed; what you should say is, 'We are Muslims (submitters),' until belief is established in your hearts." If you obey GOD and His messenger, He will not put any of your works to waste. GOD is Forgiver, Most Merciful.

Who can utter better words than one who invites to GOD, works righteousness, and says, "I am one of the submitters"?

                            Peace

But then what about Sufi Islam? Or the Sunni, Shia, Alevi, Ahmadiyya, etc etc. They all agree on the basic principles. Who decides what a Muslim is and what not?

So the Koran does not say that Muslims are the ones who submit to Allah and reject all other gods, like in 364 Say O People of the Scripture! Come to an agreement between us and you that we shall worship none but Allah, and that we shall ascribe no partner unto Him, and that none of us shall take others for lords beside Allah. And if they turn away, then say Bear witness that we are they who have surrendered (unto Him)?

And again in 367 etc etc. These are all meaningless because it will be decided later or at some other stage?

I meant only God knows. Qoran defines a Muslim. God knows the innermost thoughts ie who really submits ,who pretends to submit and who does not submit.

So is the verse 4914 implying being Muslim is a belief less status?

This ayat refers to a group that became muslim possibly for their own benefit, for protection,
                                          wealth etc.,

The Arabs said, "We are Mu'mens (believers)." Say, "You have not believed; what you should say is, 'We are Muslims (submitters),' until belief is established in your hearts." If you obey GOD and His messenger, He will not put any of your works to waste. GOD is Forgiver, Most Merciful.

Mu'mens (believers) are those who believe in GOD and His messenger, then attain the status of having no doubt whatsoever, and strive with their money and their lives in the cause of GOD. These are the truthful ones.

Say, "Are you informing GOD about your religion? GOD knows everything in the heavens and the earth. GOD is Omniscient."

Who Is Doing Whom A Favor?

They act as if they are doing you a favor by embracing Submission! Say, "You are not doing me any favors by embracing Submission. GOD is the One who is doing you a great favor by guiding you to the faith, if you are sincere."

                                          Peace
