Qiblah...searched but found no answer
-
Peace,
I found another thread regarding facing the Qiblah during prayer but it didn't really answer my question. I read this ayat
2143 And thus we have made you a middle nation that you will be witnesses over the people and the Messenger will be a witness over you. And We did not make the qiblah which you used to face except that We might make evident who would follow the Messenger from who would turn back on his heels. And indeed, it is difficult except for those whom Allah has guided. And never would Allah have caused you to lose your faith. Indeed Allah is, to the people, Kind and Merciful.
...and remembered this one
2177 Piety is not to turn your faces towards the east and the west, but
pious is one who believes in God and the Last Day, and the angels,
and the Book, and the prophets, and who gives money out of love
to the relatives, and the orphans, and the needy, and the wayfarer,
and those who ask, and to free the slaves; and who upholds the
contact prayer, and who contributes towards purification; and
those who keep their pledges when they make a pledge, and those
who are patient in the face of hardship and adversity and when
in despair. These are the ones who have been truthful, and these
are the righteous.Am I to understand this to mean that we don't need to face the Qiblah to pray?
Peace,
Amina

Salamun alaika
What made you to equate or consider as synonymous the two bold parts in your post?
Because aren't a majority of muslims taught to face east when praying...the direction of the qiblah?
-
Okay...I just looked up the meaning of the word qiblah. It's not an object...the word means direction. Correct?
-
No, it dows not mean direction.
it means to confront face to face.
That doesn't make sense.
-
That doesn't make sense.
A language is not what you think it makes sense for someone. Almashriq itself is a direction. One confronts it when one turns his whole body towards that direction. You cant turn your neck from East to confront West unless you turn your whole body.

Evidence?
This has been discussed perhaps in detail. I think it was the first topic that remained under discussion way back in 07 when I joined this forum. Perhaps with Aymen. Samia also participated. I will search it.
However, have you watched congregational prayer in Masjid alHaram around Ka'aba? People are facing all 360 directions? Does it not show, believers do not believe in directions?

Mazhar,
I see. I agree with you completely...I didn't know about the disbelievers facing east or west. I looked up the threads and didn't find one that gave the exact answer I was looking for.
To me the word "confront" means to come face to face with, in a negative manner. So in my mind it seems ill-placed, the word "confront."
And it is impossible for many people the world over to face "east" toward mecca...some people are south of mecca, which means they would face north, and vice versa.

Salamun alaiki,
Where did you read this? Which dictionary?

Yes, I agree that "confront", though means face to face with somebody, it is used especially in a challenge, and with hostility. Please find a better word to describe a person and an object in a face to face state, to transcribe Arabic word into English. Thanks.

That is because they are all facing the Kaaba, that is their qibla
Salamun alaiki, Ayesha,
Excellent.
And everyone has a direction different than even the person standing shoulder to shoulder with him. When people are away from Ka'aba they do not stand in a circle. Therefore, there it is not Ka'aba with which every one in a long row could be face to face with Ka'aba-it being a rectangle House.
What is that with which everyone is face to face when away from Ka'aba? -

Taking the Kaaba as 'the qibla' in 2.144 so anywhere in the world one is supposed to face that.....so if you lived in India/Pakistan one would assume you would face west.........never thought about that, do you face west? o and at which point on the world map would that become facing east......as the earth is round........... hypno
Just checking other verses with same root letters.........I always thought it meant direction too, now I'm thinking it doesn't...........and why would the people of the book know it was right? Have to admit I am confused now on 2.142 -144.

Peace scaredmuslimah,
We have seen you turning your face about the sky (searching for the right direction). We now assign a Qiblah that is pleasing to you. Henceforth, you shall turn your face towards the Sacred Masjid. Wherever you may be, all of you shall turn your faces towards it. Those who received the previous scripture know that this is the truth from their Lord. GOD is never unaware of anything they do.
The Qiblah depends on your position in relation to the kaaba.
Example, if you are due north of the kaaba then the qiblah would be south
if you are south of the kaaba then the qiblah would be north
because we are to "face" the kaaba
in mecca, that would entail 360 degrees if the kaaba was surrouned
because everyone would be facing the kaaba" Wherever you may be, all of you shall turn your faces towards it."
The building has a mosque built around it, the Masjid al-Haram. All Muslims around the world are supposed to face the Kaaba during prayers, no matter where they are. From any given point in the world, the direction facing the Kaaba is called the Qibla.
We have rendered the shrine (the Ka'aba) a focal point for the people, and a safe sanctuary. You may use Abraham's shrine as a prayer house. We commissioned Abraham and Ismail "You shall purify My house for those who visit, those who live there, and those who bow and prostrate."
Similarities between "baca" in the bible and "Makkah" in the holy quran
-
As how you read previously, "Bakka" is mentioned as the other name of "Mecca" in quran. The word "BAKKA" (in quran) is the same as "BACA" (in bible) you read in my previous explanations about "Ash-shaddat" the only difference between these two words is the "ash-shaddat".
-
Psalms 845 shows that "baca" is city of pilgrimge, and quran also show that "bakka" is city of pilgrimage.
-
"Macca" (bakka) is God selected city according to both quran and bible.
-
There is existing of well close to the ka,aba (zam-zam which is still existing upto now) according to quran, the most amazing is that even in the bible this city of "baca" was mentioned together with this well. This certainly proved that even bible confirmed the existing of ka,aba and Makka since the time of David.
No sensible person can reject that "Bakka" in quran is not mean "baca" in bible, because all describtions of "Baca" in bible and "Bakka" in quran are the same
Interested reader can read the history of building of ka'aba by Abraham on this link http//islamblogonline.wordpress.com/2011/07/28/the-story-of-the-building-of-kaab
I have to learn how to do the link thing
