6112 And as such,We have permitted the enemies of every prophet, mankind and Jinn devils, to inspire each other with fancy words in order to deceive. Had your Lord willed, they would not have done it. You shall disregard them and their fabrications.
6113 That is so the hearts of those who do not believe in the Hereafter will listen to it, and they will accept it, and they will take of it what they will.
6114 "Shall I seek other than God as a judge when He has sent down to you the Book fully detailed?" Those to whom We have given the Book know it is sent down from your Lord with the truth; so do not be of those who have doubt.
6115 And the word of your Lord has been completed with truth and justice; there is no changing His words. He is the Hearer, the Knower.
6116 And if you obey most of those on the earth they will lead you away from the path of God; that is because they follow conjecture, and that is because they only guess.
6117 Your Lord is fully aware of who strays from His path, and He is fully aware of the guided ones.
6118 So eat from that on which the name of God has been mentioned, if you indeed believe in His revelations.
6119 And why should you not eat that on which the name of God has been mentioned, when He has fully detailed to you what has been made unlawful; except what you are forced to? Many misguide by their desires without knowledge; your Lord is fully aware of the transgressors.
6120 And leave what is openly a sin and what is subtle of it; those who earn sin will be punished for what they have taken.
6121 And do not eat from that which the name of God has not been mentioned, for it is wickedness. And the devils they inspire their supporters to argue with you; and if you obey them, then you are polytheists.

1057 O people, advice has come to you from your Lord and a healing for what is in the chests, and a guidance and a mercy for the believers.
1058 Say "By the grace of God and His mercy." For that let them rejoice, that is better than all that they gather.
1059 Say "Have you seen what God has sent down to you from provisions, then you have made some of it forbidden and some lawful?" Say "Did God authorize you, or do you invent lies about God?"
1060 And what will those who invent lies about God think on the Day of Resurrection? God is with great bounty to the people, but most of them are not thankful.

16114 So eat from what God has provided you, that which is good and lawful, and be thankful for the blessing of God, if it is indeed He whom you serve.
16115 He has only forbidden for you what is already dead, and the blood, and the meat of pig, and what was sacrificed to any other than God. But whoever is forced to, without seeking disobedience or transgression, then God is Forgiver, Merciful.
16116 And do not say, as to what your tongues falsely describe "This is lawful, and that is forbidden;" that you seek to invent lies about God. Those who invent lies about God will not succeed.
16117 A small enjoyment, and they will have a painful retribution.

6150 Say "Bring forth your witnesses who bear witness that God has made this unlawful." If they bear witness, then do not bear witness with them, nor follow the desires of those who deny Our revelations, and those who do not believe in the Hereafter; and they make equals with their Lord!
6151 Say "Come let me recite what your Lord has made unlawful for you that you should not set up anything with Him; and do good to your parents; and do not kill your children for fear of poverty, We provide for you and for them; and do not come near lewdness, what is evident of it and what is subtle; and do not take the life which God has made forbidden, except in justice. That is what He enjoined you that you may comprehend."

661 O you prophet, why do you make unlawful what God has made lawful for you, seeking to please your wives? God is Forgiver, Merciful.
662 God has already given the law, regarding the cancellation of oaths. And God is your Lord, and He is the Knowledgeable, the Wise.

469 Say I am no different from the other messengers, nor do I know what will happen to me or to you. I only follow what is inspired to me. I am no more than a clear warner.

There are actually many more verses than these. This is just the tip of the iceberg.

    Peace! sun

thanks man. I appreciate the reply. I've read every word.

Lookitup, it is awfully funny that you say that hadith made you come to that conclusion because in fact I have read hadith where the Prophet not only approves of music and dancing, but actually encourages to participate. So...

If you start asking hadith in order to act or not act in some particularly way you will end up having to choose between hadiths or choosing whatever pleases you or discarding them as a normative source alltogether, because you will be nuts before long.

For the sake of accuracy, I am a sister.

As to reference to hadiths, I am sorry, I am a lousy documenter. I read, I take the gist of it and never care to note down where or what. But I can assure you they exist. May be you can do a search for music, allowed, forbidden... Well I am sure you will be able to manage it, though it may take time.

In fact, one thing about hadith is that on any question you may find one thing and the opposite recommended, ordered, forbidden, etc.

Which even if we think they are authentic, which we will never be able to ascertain, it is logical. Things which are not decisive usually depend a lot on situation, circumstances, persons' condition, etc. ... so why should anything at all always be the same?

The trap of hadith is that anybody can pick whatever he or she likes and pound it on whoever lets him or herself be pounded on with a pile of "holy" words.

The honourable Qur'an on the other hand, comes complete, with all the context we need. Some people say that hadith adds context. No. We do not need a context which is not our context, and context, exact, complete, accurate context can never be reproduced. Therefore, the honourable Qur'an does not give context which may serve only to confuse, but gives just what may feed our understanding and souls.

              Salaam

Well, it depends on what you intend to do with the hadiz. If it is your purpose to derive permissions or obligations, then you may have to study a lot, but if one does not want that, but get spiritual or common sense knowledge, then, as far as I am concerned, one does not have to labour like a slave to classify hadizths which are manifest nonsense or irrelevant or outright inmoral or defaming for the Prophet.

I I think there are selections of hadiths where you get good ones by content. As far as I am concerned, that is what should be done. Selection of the ones that offer honest food for thought or reflection. I cannot see the use of dumping a whole lot of irrelevant gossip, or ridiculous recounts.

Absolute certainte I do not think that we will get from any of them that it is stright from the Prophet's mouth. So the content is the relevant element of it. If it serves, well and good, if it does not or diserves, why bother.

                  Salaam

but the meaning of the word "YUHBAROON" itself is delight no? I'm a bit cautious about deriving meaning of the words. I don't think this is convincing enough but, sometimes I think of music as pleasant sounds.. could it actually be Haraam? Allah knows best.

How can it be haram when the Qur'an does not say at all such a thing? That would mean that anybody can make anything haram whenever that suits him. But then it would be his haram's, not God's haram. And who cares at what anybody might haram of his own or not? Would you like having some harams of mine?

if one were to take the collection of haddith into account then according to my understanding(which I'm afraid to say) it is. (Allah warned us about labeling things as haraam when it is halaal I am merely saying what I've read) ok this thread has come to it's end I'll close it later.
