Where is the Golden Rule in the Quran?
-
Peace Maha,
I think implicit in the Golden Rule is doing good. For example, if one says patiently perserving refers to patiently doing evil... that would be a completely wrong interpretation of the message. We would say patience is a good goal to work towards and we would mean for good ends.
A general point
In the West, (this can apply to the whole world as well) where the Golden rule has apparently been predominant in Christianity, has this been applied? Imperialism has been used to plunder the resources of other nations to create wealth. Wars and complete disregard for human life - especially on different ethnic, religious etc grounds. Sanctions applied in such a way that brutalise people.
Total lack of environmentalism - in the form of lack of reuse and recycling, to pollution and wasting resources. Fashion is actually a huge one in that regard because so much is wasted in the process of updating let alone the resources it takes to create things. Water is used for everything, and there's a lot more water used to create jeans etc than you might assume. Water is a very precious resource. I think we should also treat the environment with respect and I believe this is also part of the 'golden rule' in the Quran.
Wealth and prosperity are so greatly admired or sought after by people in general both in modern times and the past they forget the Quran's message. But wealth, as I mentioned can be gained in the worst ways... would we want others to do this to us? And then others still admire the wealth we have? Haman (I think it is although it could be someone else) is admired by people for his wealth. However, he loses it all and I think he dies at the same time. And the believers say, it is not the wealth we should admire and they refer to God swt and belief in the last day and that Haman did not care about that.
So in practice, has the Golden Rule been applied by those who say it is apparently more explicit in their scriptures? Or at least, it has been held in the traditions etc of the nation? Maybe that's something that should also considered a bit.
peace sister
Well I agree with you but I dont see anywhere where the golden rule has been applied properly, do you?
And what if someone is self destructive... how would he understand the golden rule ???

And let not those of virtue among you and wealth swear not to give to their relatives and the needy and the emigrants for the cause of Allah , and let them pardon and overlook. Would you not like that Allah should forgive you? And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
Sahih International612-3
O you who have believed, why do you say what you do not do?
Great is hatred in the sight of Allah that you say what you do not do.
Sahih International588
Allah will not impose blame upon you for what is meaningless in your oaths, but He will impose blame upon you for what you intended of oaths. So its expiation is the feeding of ten needy people from the average of that which you feed your families or clothing them or the freeing of a slave. But whoever cannot find - then a fast of three days . That is the expiation for oaths when you have sworn. But guard your oaths. Thus does Allah make clear to you His verses that you may be grateful.
Sahih InternationalPlease send the thousand dollars through paypal to admin mohf nl, that is, if you are truthfull.
But my experience tells me that Hadithers would never do that; its a sin for Hadithers to give money to jews, christians, mushrikeen, kafireen ... Including Quranists, because they do not believe in Abu Hurairah.
None of those verses have the Golden Rule "Treat others as you wish to be treated"
Not even close

What about worshipping one God? Isn't it obvious?

Who made this golden rule? Allah? If not, then that is NOT the golden rule.
Now comes to your question. Do you mean if I feed a poor, do I expect from him the same? Is this what YOUR golden rule is?
May Allah open our hearts to understand the Truth pr

mmKhanGood question. The Golden Rule would mean that you should feed a poor person because if you yourself were poor and hungry you would like others to help you and give you food out of kindness.
See how beautiful the Golden Rule is. Problem is Golden Rule is never mentioned in Quran, only in Hadith. Alhamdulillah.

Peace Israfeel,
As usual the information you seek can be found in Quran in the context. Any blessed person of average intellect can work out from Quran that you should treat your neighbor well, and any other person too.
All you need to know about conduct is sufficiently detailed in Quran, hence why God calls His hadith perfectly detailed and that He did not leave anything out of it.
Why all the circular arguments? Give up on your hadith instead and be a Believer. Peace makes us all feel well and God will love us.
God bless you

Does the golden rule in hadith also applies to non-sunnis?

But how do you know that this is the golden rule?
Peace brother,
I think you're right. I don't think the Golden rule is complete without - believe in Allah, the last day as well as do good. Because part of doing good is not rejecting the clear signs.
Argh.. nevermind, my bad as I just realized lol
No... you were onto something. Because if Allah is the Truth, how can we ignore Allah, how can that not be part of the most important 'Golden Rule'?

Peace,
The Quran mentions exactly that and more. The Quran makes your Golden Rule practical, and gives examples and further guidance.

Peace sister,
In all fairness sister, I did mention that the whole world has been lacking the application of the Golden rule. What I meant was that Christianity has this explicitly written down... but even within its traditions and past it didn't put it into practice.
In terms of self destructive people... I know what you mean because I once made a similar point somewhere on here. Although I reconsidered it a bit. The Golden Rule occurs within the context of religion for example Christianity, where they will say things like 'love thy neighbour'. So, it seems as though a self destructive person would always have trouble applying any moral rules because they'd pick the negative. Having said that, as we are born with moral values and Allah swt has bestowed that upon us as well as the ability to repent, I believe people would know what these things really mean... they would still understand morality etc. Those are my thoughts on it.

"Never will you attain the good until you spend from that which you love. And whatever you spend - indeed, Allah is Knowing of it."
(Sahih International)"And not equal are the good deed and the bad. Repel by that which is better; and thereupon the one whom between you and him is enmity as though he was a devoted friend."
(Sahih International)"And those who were settled in al-Madinah and the faith before them. They love those who emigrated to them and find not any want in their breasts of what the emigrants were given but give preference over themselves, even though they are in privation. And whoever is protected from the stinginess of his soul - it is those who will be the successful."
(Sahih International)"They fulfill vows and fear a Day whose evil will be widespread."
"And they give food in spite of love for it to the needy, the orphan, and the captive"
", "We feed you only for the countenance of Allah . We wish not from you reward or gratitude."
(Sahih International)The lack of an explicit Golden Rule is an argument islamophobes love to use. However, by Quranic principle we are supposed to be good to everyone bar people aggressing us (and even that is subject to it's own set of principles) It's a shame how many muslims and non-muslims seem to ignore this principle these days.

Yes it applies to all humanity
Translation Treat people the way you love them to treat you (Muslim Sharif)
If it applies to non-Sunnis then how does hadithism justify slavery of non-Sunnis, stoning of women, and invasion of foreign countries like the Arab invasion of India ? And why does zakat not apply to non-Sunnis, or what about killing murdads?

First of all this is a different topic, which requires more explanation. Briefly I will say that stoning of women is not for fun, it is a punishment for women who commit adultery. If men commit adultery (Zina) then they will also be stoned to death according to Shariah.
Zakat is for Believers. If non-Muslims want to pay Zakat we will be happy, no one is stopping them.
And as for invasions - well in war the winning army conquers the losing army. Just like if you play soccer, the winning team gets the trophy and prize and the losing team gets nothing. Hope you understand.
