    Never Say
    SALAM

Can we say Salam! according to Quran ? Since it is one of Allah's names, is it not haram to use it casually whenever two people meet, without fear for Allah?

      Salam brother,
i don't think that GOD asks us not to mention his name when greeting people. We always say Inshallah, Alhamdulillah and Mashallah. GOD's name is always mentioned. As for Salam, there are many examples that show the use of the word

      2563
      63. WaAAibadu alrrahmani allatheena yamshoona AAala al-ardi hawnan wa-itha khatabahumu aljahiloona qaloo salaman

      1. And the servants of ((Allah)) Most Gracious are those who walk on the earth in humility, and when the ignorant address them, they say, "Peace!";

      654
      54. Wa-itha jaaka allatheena yu/minoona bi-ayatina faqul salamun AAalaykum kataba rabbukum AAala nafsihi alrrahmata annahu man AAamila minkum soo-an bijahalatin thumma taba min baAAdihi waaslaha faannahu ghafoorun raheemun

      1. When those come to thee who believe in Our signs, Say "Peace be on you Your Lord hath inscribed for Himself (the rule of) mercy verily, if any of you did evil in ignorance, and thereafter repented, and amend (his conduct), lo! He is Oft- for giving, Most Merciful.

      746
      46. Wabaynahuma hijabun waAAala al-aAArafi rijalun yaAArifoona kullan biseemahum wanadaw as-haba aljannati an salamun AAalaykum lam yadkhulooha wahum yatmaAAoona

      1. Between them shall be a veil, and on the heights will be men who would know every one by his marks they will call out to the Companions of the Garden, "peace on you" they will not have entered, but they will have an assurance (thereof).

      And many examples

      Salam

      Hussein

        Peace be upon you,

Our natural state is undifferentiation, or peace. We say "peace be upon you" because that should be our true driving force(emotuion), Peace. NOt anger, hatred, etc.

        What exactly are you asking?

          Salaam,

Remember it was the greeting the malaika gave to Abraham as well .

Is peace not the reward from allah either direct ? Or through the malayikas, by His Leave ? If such is the case, is it porper on our part to reward the same ? That too we ourselves when in need of salamath ?

When we say Salam to someone, we are wishing them peace from GOD.

Let me be direct Is Peace (salaam) not the reward from Allah alone ?

                  013.028
"Those who believe, and whose hearts are set to peace in the remembrance of Allah for without doubt in the remembrance of Allah alone do hearts find peace".

How can we impart 'peace' into anyone's heart? Is it humanly possible to set right one's heart from his wrong doings unless he himself is willing to mend his ways towards righteousness, due to his fear for Allah?

                    Peace drfazl,

Intention is the key. Personally speaking, I've never intended to grant peace, as that is beyond my means. Saying "may peace be upon you" is nothing more than wishing well for others.

                    May peace be upon you,
                    Tay

Peace is an ordinary word, a word commonly used by people intentionally or unintetionally. My prime consideration is towards the USE of the Word "SALAM" which is one of the Names of Allah. If, as you say the "intention is the key", then, the 'key' is sure to open the gate and lead one towards salam. We see most people enter into the chat rooms/discussion rooms saying 'salaams' and 'wa salaams' invariably endingup with scoffs and jeers. Is it dignifying to Allah or is it abuse of His names? Allah clearly says if one receives any good it is from HIM for his righteousness; and if one receives any bad it is due to his own wrong doings. We shall have to value our own virtue first before praying for SALAM for anyone.

The intention is only at the mind level. Saying salam is a lip service compared to praying for salam to all, all the time, keeping in mind the restrictions set by Allah. We use Allah's name where there is Praise for Allah's Dignity, Wisdom, Truth, Power, Forgiveness, Benevolance and so on..

                      007180
And Allah's are the best names, therefore call on Him thereby, and leave alone those who violate the sanctity of His names; they shall be recompensed for what they did.

If only Al Salam, one of the names of Allah for instance, is used with its sanctity well preserved and guarded in the heart of a mumin, and if only Allah had recognized such truth in your heart, salamath would have descended in the hearts of the people you wish for. It is blasphemous to use salam as lipservice.

                        Peace upon you,

drfazl, what the sentence above means to you LITERALLY?

We can start a conversation with someone else with many formulas, like hi, hello, good morning, goog evening... or as you do by puting big titles for your posts, but do you think it's of any use for the other person?

Proclaiming peace when meeting with people, especially strangers, would be the least to engage in a constructive relation, closing the door for "bad" intentions. But one has to mean it, and respect it even in disagreements.

There's much benefit to introduce oneself by offering peace, meaning being harmless to the other person, better and more information than hi or ahlan or hello or bonjour... "Salamoun ?laykoume" or "peace upon you" or "paix sur vous"... the message is universal, for humanity, in whatever language, it's peace, everybody on earth can understand this concept even without language only by signs, no need for prior KNOWLEDGE, it's a natural and an innate state, that one should try to maintain until death, a peaceful state. Can "muslim" be "one who imposes peace on himself(nafs) in dealing with his wordly life"?

My intention when i posted with headings is to save time for the readers, so that they know the conclusion of what they are about to read

But clearly you are disturbed and not at peace at my postings with 'big' headings(allowed by the administrators only). Any way for you my posts with title is just like saying hi, hello etc., which is of no use for any one is what you assume. With this in mind you post your hipocrisy and still greet me with such words "PEACE upon you."

                          I Quit of you!

                            Peace be upon you Doctor,

I really cannot understand the positions you hold. You have come herestating that we should not seek knowledge, while the God clearly says that we should SAY "my Lord increase my knowledge".

Now you are saying that greeting with the UTMOST greeting of PEACE is incorrect? How do you reason? This is what the God instructs us to do becauase our essential nature is PEACE and it is what we are returning to.

                            (654) And if those who have faith came to you with Our signs, so say "peace upon you, your Lord decreed on Himself the mercy, that who from you did evil with ignorance/foolishness, then he repented from after it, and corrected/repaired, so that He truly is a forgiver, merciful."

Please hlep me to understand why you are saying things opposite to the teachings of the God?

                              Peace upon you drfazl,

I assure you that I mean it whenever I say it.

Now that I re-read my previous post, I see what disappointed you, and I present you my apologies for that.

It's not your posts that are of no use, as my sentence can suggest, but those meaning-less words as "hi, hello..".

Titles also bring a minimum of information to the readers, but are often misleading (not yours especialy, but generally speaking), used only to catch attention.

As for the word "big" in big titles, in first place it was "big shinny titles", I just wanted to tease you oops then I thought you will not like it, so I removed "shinny".

Please don't take my comments personally. And be sure of my peaceful intentions.

                              Respectfully

Salaamun alaikum-Peace to you, as per the Reading.

As-salaamu alaikum- The Peace of God to you, which has not been enjoined as a greeting to the believers but is the greeting of the sunni, shia etc. The addition of the definite article is the difference between night and day. Who has the authority to say The Peace of God to you? No one!

I?d like to add I once had a professor from the illustrious Al Azhar explain to me that As-Salaamu alaikum was a more melodious way we Arabs speak. They presume to correct God. No where in the Qur'aan will you find As-salaamu alaikum. What a crock.

                                    Salam Grourself

Assalam Alaikum really means The peace of GOD is upon you and not to you.

I do agree that the article makes a lot of difference. There are two verses in the Qur'an where it is mentioned

Waalssalamu AAalayya yawmawulidtu wayawma amootu wayawma obAAathu hayyan

                                    2.

"So go ye both to him, and say, 'Verily we are messengers sent by thy Lord Send forth, therefore, the Children of Israel with us, and afflict them not with a Sign, indeed, have we come from thy Lord! and peace to all who follow guidance!

                                    May peace be with you.

                                      peace All,

I would literally translate "Assalam Alaikum" as "the peace upon you". The God isn't referenced in the saying, one could say its implied, as The God grants peace.

                                      Wakas

All information is correct to the best of my knowledge only and thus should not be taken as a fact. One should always seek knowledge and verify for themselves when possible: 17:36, 20:114, 35:28, 49:6, 58:11.

                                        Peace,

Thanks Hlatf. I did know it is upon and not to but thanks for pointing it out. I also should have added "as a greeting".

There is no doubt what the traditionalists mean when they use this greeting. Hence their aversion to saying it to "non-muslims". Do you agree?
