When the Qur'an says the apostles of Muhammad are merciful to believers and harsh to disbelievers and command Muslims to wage jihad against disbelievers. I don't know much about Islam so may be someone could refute how ISIS go against Qur'an, because to me it seems like they are the ones following Islam properly whereas the "good" Muslims are not.

You say you don't have much knowledge about Islam. Start by reading this.

      http//free-minds.org/universal-declaration-human-rights-and-quran

It's a long answer but knowledge and wisdom takes time and effort to acquire.

        Peace plato2.

Let us see what Islam they are following?

        • They oppress and terrorise civilians.
        • They are fighting their supposed brothers in Islam.
-They are not respecting other faiths.
Of course I cannot verify for myself except what I am hearing from other sources , internet and their own sites.

Now are these ,in your opinion ,people who follow Qoran and practise its message?

Do you disagree with this ? why?

My opinion is they think they are following true Islam! Far from it . They are following conjecture ,guesswork and men s laws/rule?

Among the people, there are those who uphold baseless Hadith, and thus divert others from the path of God without knowledge, and take it in vain. These have incurred a shameful retribution.

GOD s religion unites people,it does not divide them!!!!

However, they divided themselves into disputing religions. All of them will come back to us (for judgment).

They have set up their religious leaders and scholars as lords, instead of God. Others deified the Messiah, son of Mary. They were all commanded to worship only one god. There is no god except He. Be He glorified, high above having any partners.

Qoran does not teach us evil. How can we justify oppression and murder and say it is true Islam?

        GOD bless you.
        Peace.

Thanks, they are very good answers, but why in the Qur'an does it say merciful to believers and harsh to disbelievers? That sounds like it may inspire these extremists. I am sure I am wrong and you will be able to rectify.

You have to give a quote of that with the aya in which it is placed in the Qur'an as such I don't recognize it. The Qur'an does not say to anybody to be harsg to anybody, that is out of the question. So just give the number of the aya and sura where you found that so we can ascertain what the thing is about.

This is a problem when you translate k f r (kafir) as disbeliever. It is harsh against those who oppose God and those with God and not for the sake of being against people you do not like. A person who does good, or at least not been acting out against the decree of God, is not a kafir, no matter claimed faith or not.

On the other hand, this 'ISIS' people are kafirs because they oppose everything God stands for and they are enemies of God and God's allies. And they have no protection against people who fight for goodness and will stand no chance against a decently organized force fighting for what is right. And their warriors die in the delusion of martyrdom while that is exclusive for someone who fights for any good reasons.

And like I have said before; there is no "belief" in God but either you know or you do not and you become whole with God like into symbiosis or you turn away from God (an example ISIS) by doing bad, and your preferred ultimate goal is to become like God to be included in that particular unity. God knows he/she/it exists and needs no confirmation of that fact and we can join up or become nothing, zero, nobody. Better become whole, purified and harmonized/symbiotic. Such harmony it is to be whole, and it requires no wealth.

                Be whole

                  Peace plato2.

In GOD was talking about specific people who opposed the prophet and the believers

gives an indication who they were. clarifies how they felt for the prophet and the believers.

They were a group who hated the believers, always ready to betray and harm them?

They were people who opposed GOD and His messenger and the believers and were aggressive towards them.

Qoran teaches to be peaceful with all who are peaceful with you. And to try and reconcile your differences . Do not be aggressive is the message!

                  GOD bless you.
                  Peace.

Apart from the answers given by gl and mof

There are ayas in the Qur?an which speak of having alliances with non believers and they are to be held, somewhere it is said that if they agress you, you defend yourself, if they do not, do not agress them yourself.

I am bad at remembering the numbers but these are there. If you have read the Qur'an you must have found them.

Also, as Man of Faith has told you beware of what is translated as what. Kafir is not disbeliever per se. Also disbeliever, I must same is not the same as non believer. Kafir is somebody who strives to cover truth and strives to keep it covered for others. Is somebody actively promoting untruth and agressive about it. It is not merely that you do no believe in whatever. With those the Qur'an does not provide anything different from what is normal good neighbourly relations. Kafir is a tremendous word, it is a moral denomination not a religious one. It has to do not with what one believes but with one does.

The Qur'an enjoins patience and meekness, but when defenceless people are at stake, enjoins standing up for them. Believers who follow the Qur?an are not to look on while somebody else is butchered. The must stand up to oppression. That is one thing. Agression is out of the question.

There is one aya, I can't recall which says to throw them out fromwhere they throw you out and other things. Which means that the aggressor whould not be rearded with his booty, and there should be reddress.

We know that today in the world it is not like that. But believers should stand up for justice and not accept that victims be kept victims forever.

That was very much applied by the victors after the second world war (whether sincerely or not is something else) but not now, anything goes and seems to go on forever.

                    Salaam

Guys, he is talking about Surah I-Fath's

                      The mistranslated wordashiddu http//corpus.quran.com/wordbyword.jsp?chapter=48&verse=29#(48291)

I urge the answer seeker to read the Surah to know what this verse was actually talking about.

I don't know much about Islam so may be someone could refute how ISIS go against Qur'an, because to me it seems like they are the ones following Islam properly whereas the "good" Muslims are not.

Hehehee, actually according to Quran, we are not even supposed to have sects. Forget about fighting against each other.

As for those who divide their religion and break up into sects, thou hast no part in them in the least their affair is with Allah He will in the end tell them the truth of all that they did. (6159)

Ironically, they broke up into sects only after the knowledge had come to them, due to jealousy and resentment among themselves. If it were not for a predetermined decision from your Lord to respite them for a definite interim, they would have been judged immediately. Indeed, the later generations who inherited the scripture are full of doubts. (verse 4214)

Of the ones who have caused disunity in their religion and become sects, each party exulting with what they have close to them. (3032)

                      How does ISIS violate Quran?

                      1. We are allowed to fight only if we are attacked first. By the way, this is the same policy used by our American defense department.

Fight in the way of God against those who fight against you, but begin not hostilities. Lo! God loveth not aggressors. 2190

"Fight in the cause of God those who fight you, but do not transgress limits; for God loves not transgressors. And slay them wherever you catch them, and turn them out from where they have turned you out; for tumult and oppression are worse than slaughter... But if they cease, God is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful... If they cease, let there be no hostility except to those who practice oppression" (2190-193)

                      1. Some hating us does not necessarily mean we should be treating them bad.

And do not let the hatred of a people prevent you from being just. Be just; that is nearer to righteousness.58

Goodness and evil are not equal.
Repel evil with what is better.
Then that person with whom there was hatred,
                      may become your intimate friend!
And no one will be granted such goodness
except those who exercise patience and self-restraint,
none but people of the greatest good fortune.
                      Quran 4134-35

unfortunately, the mainstream Islam is not the actual Islam. It sold its soul to the devil via Mr Bukhari.

                        peace plato2,

You are essentially talking about using one verse and not considering it's context or using other verses. Anyone can take one statement or verse out of context and use it to justify whatever they desire - this is sometimes done to convince a lay audience.

If however, you want to follow Quran in its entirety, then one must consider all verses. Further reading

The golden rule in Quran when it comes to fighting/war is one can only retaliate with equivalence or less. If peace is an option, this option must be taken. If anyone asks for your protection you must protect them.

... why in the Qur'an does it say merciful to believers and harsh to disbelievers?

I am not comfortable with such a translation. I was unsettled years ago when I first saw the word "harsh" in a translation because to me, this seemed to contradict other verses in the Quran.

                              I like Muhammad Asad's translation
MUHAMMAD is God's Apostle; and those who are with him are firm and unyielding43 towards all deniers of the truth, full of mercy towards one another.43

43 This composite gives, I believe, the full meaning of the term ashidda' (sing. shadid) in the above context.

Let's take a look at one of the more spectacular charges against ISIL that of killing anyone who doesn't 'convert to Islam'.

We already know that there is no provision in the Qur'an for killing someone simply because they will not convert to Islam; one need only to refer to the ever-popular Sura 2256 for the prohibition of forcing a conversion in any way. So, if the reports are true and ISIL members are giving captives a choice between conversion to Islam or death, they themselves are the sinners and will have to answer to Allah for those sins and any murders or mistreatment they mete out in these actions.

If this 'convert or kill' mentality is limited to specific groups within ISIL, one hopes the ISIL leadership will deal with them accordingly. If, on the other hand, 'convert or kill' is an ISIL-wide policy, then the entire organization is to be held accountable. In any case, ISIL policy or not, the individuals carrying out such a policy have no recourse; the Qur'an itself teaches that this is not to be done and no man-made policy can abrogate the Word of Allah.

I think a lot of good points have already been made on this thread. But to clear everything up very easily, read 608-9. ISIS are not "Muslim". They worship their egos to put it nicely & Satan to put it honestly. Peace!

                                    Peace Sabboushi,

I have my own understanding of it in the context and I see that we should hold ourselves "honorable" in their sight and deal with them according to the decree and not transgress due to our anger towards them. Mind something like honor of warfare that was often used in many earlier, perhaps medieval, contexts such as not strike down a yielding soldier or oppress your prisoners, but treat them in jail like a brother void of sound judgment. At least this is how I consider the interpretation here rather than to be harsh towards them which does not fit the harmonious nature of what is called "Islam". Kafar is someone who is "void of sound judgment", but in one way or another we must be ready to forgive them if they somehow would come to their senses, and that not by adhering to illusive religious rituals but merely to use the good judgment (hakma &#1615 of God (being that it is). Fighting fire with fire is futile, but by keeping ourselves honorable to them in all scenarios may make the people void of sound judgment to begin to wonder which cause they are really aiding. Add that by showering them with lessons/light from God and show that we are mosadeqeen (loosely of light giving ones).

It is easy to become in outrage over the atrocities that the IS members do in Iraq and Syria, but their wrongdoing does not stop there. Their false teachers in foreign states work hard to make naive people devoid of sound judgment by instructing them what is not from God, and the sense of social membership and a delusive goal triggers the phenomenon in humans that causes them to be like lemmings that follow each other down a cliff without really spiritually questioning their own motives. They become completely blind. These people have had no good role models and never been taught but indoctrinated conjecture and the cold nature of our societies does not make it any better. It turns to become much like the 'We vs. Them' phenomenon, one sees fault in everyone else while one cannot see any error in oneself, and sometimes to the point in considering ones own group as "God's chosen ones", completely oblivious of the judgment of injustice that they do in the path of their atrocities. They are also uneducated that God does only promote violence to quench an uprising of unjust behavior, and then also in the most honorable and respectful way, and also by showing good judgment so one should erase the label of group identity but fight for the cause and not for the group, and if one group transgresses they must stop that no matter ally or not.

                                    Be of one with God

I am not comfortable with such a translation. I was unsettled years ago when I first saw the word "harsh" in a translation because to me, this seemed to contradict other verses in the Quran.

                                    I like Muhammad Asad's translation
MUHAMMAD is God's Apostle; and those who are with him are firm and unyielding43 towards all deniers of the truth, full of mercy towards one another.43

43 This composite gives, I believe, the full meaning of the term ashidda' (sing. shadid) in the above context.

Sunnies and Shias have done horrible things. No one trusts them and that gives the third party a chance to sell some weapons. Apparently, ISIS smells too American.

I am currently reading the stuff about them from this blog
                                      http//co-creatingournewearth.blogspot.co.nz/2014/07/quick-isis-download-here-your.html
Feel free to do the same to know how far these guys will go. Latest news is that ISIS has decided to destroy Mecca.

You should start reading Qur'an and even just be reading till chapter two, you will know everything they are doing is against Qur'an. I am new to reading it too, but I know what they are doing is completely against God's system. They force their faith over others which is against Qur'an just by reading chapter two, they will know it is. There is no compulsion in the system. They are raping and killing others who are NOT killing them nor oppressing them at all. Again, these all actions are against Qur'an.

You can verify this information through Qur'an. They are not following God, but Satan. They are delusional thinking it is what God wants them to do.They are sick.

                                          Peace

Like mentioned before I believe that 4829 specific referring to the followers of Muhammed. The People which followed him that time. To claim these days to be a follower would be a violation to 2136 ... we do not make a distinction between any (prophets) of them and to Him we peacefully surrender."
Therefore the followers of Muhammed today are the Muhammedans or Hadit-followers. These do not follow the word of God, but instead follow what they believe Muhammad have commanded.
I think the violate the Quran mostly in the manner that they don't fear God. But doing as they please.

Annother sura is 2191And kill them wherever you encounter them, and expel them from where they expelled you.... There we must look at the verse before he we specific see that this is in a specific case or fight Muhammed and his followers had 2190And fight in the cause of God against those who fight you, but do not aggress, God does not love the aggressors. So its only the one who fight against you.

I see nothing in AQ that you should be entitled to kill someone who leaves Islam.( But please correct me if I am wrong)
By the other hand I find it in the Bible ( Detr. 13) If your very own brother, or your son or daughter, or the wife you love, or your closest friend secretly entices you, saying, Let us go and worship other gods (gods that neither you nor your ancestors have known, 7gods of the peoples around you, whether near or far, from one end of the land to the other), 8do not yield to them or listen to them. Show them no pity. Do not spare them or shield them. 9You must certainly put them to death. Your hand must be the first in putting them to death, and then the hands of all the people. 10Stone them to death, because they tried to turn you away from the Lord your God

Also we see in the Bible that you should kill followers of others religions Ex 2220Whoever sacrifices to any god other than the Lord must be destroyed.
Or this one Ex 2217 Do not allow a sorceress to live.

Are Isis in reality follow the Bible more than Al Quran?
