We have some Muslims in US who avoid eating Mcdonald's, kfc, taco, subway, etc because they believe such restaurants don't have halal meat.
But here is a funny story. One my aunts used to buy her meat from an Afghan store because they had a big board outside saying "WE SELL HALAL MEAT". It was 1 hour away from her house and expensive that what was sold in American supermarkets. That didn't matter for we were just making sure that our "religion" was kept intact.
Once she was stuck at work for which she told me and my another aunt to go buy some beef from that store. It was for the coming BBQ party. We reached the store around at 1pm (lunch time for most businesses). Once in, we found no one. However, the store's countertop was filled with plastic bags containing beef and just in front of them was a slip from the near by store called Food Lion. Here is a glimpse of this super store http//www.foodlion.com/OurBrands/food-lion-beef
Something just went amiss. The store owner got out of the store room and when he saw was he was fully shocked. It felt as if he was caught or something. But we acted casual like we saw nothing. The man asked what we needed. My aunt lied, "tahini sauce". I kept quiet, for I was only a teen back then and didn't want to come between two adults. He sold us the thing. We got out. She moved our car to Food Lion's parking lot and bought the beef from there.

I eat lawful ("halal" FOOD. That is food that is not the meat of pigs, running blood, animals that died of a natural death and what is dedicated to other than God. I always mention the name of God upon my food. If you follow anything else, you are following a source of law other than God as stated in the Quran.
Read 6114 to 6160ish. God is clear those who follow other diratary restrictions and those who make up lies, are polytheists and will be punished.
Remember to mention the name of God before you eat.

You should read that section in the Quran. Then you will have yoir answer and see the severity. Freedom is the key. We shall not make up more restrictions. God wants to make things simple, and "halal meat" is not.

Peace es, all,
I agree with progressive also with some additional considerations. I make sure my food is free from pesticides (grown organically) and free of antibiotics and hormones, and the animals and birds have not been fed GMO products such as corn. All so called halal meat stores not only violate the divine commandments but their meat has all the poisons I mentioned above and I avoid it. The GMO free meat is extremely hard to find unless you raise your own animals and birds and feed them organic food.
I also avoid vegetable oils, simple sugars, sugar substitutes like aspartame, splenda etc., trans fat, processed foods, and GMO foods, sodas, junk foods, food dyes, anything containing sodium benzoate etc. (in presence of vitamin C, sodium benzoate becomes benzene which is a petroleum product and extremely carcinogenic).
I also avoid modern wheat even if it is organic whole wheat. For readers interested in more information, please watch this eye opener
http//www.youtube.com/watch?v=UbBURnqYVzw&feature=youtube_gdata_player
Among grains, I try to eat only gluten free such as organic brown rice (Indian or Thai - others have high levels of arsenic), buckwheat, quinoa etc.
All fish have some mercury and I avoid fish with high levels of mercury like tuna, swordfish, shark etc. I try to eat only wild fish as opposed to farmed. Wild sockeye salmon is the best. They inject poisonous red dye in farmed salmon to make it look more pink.
Instead of simple sugars I use Xylitol or Stevia, and instead of vegetable oil I use extra virgin organic olive oil for salads or to pour over food, and extra virgin unrefined organic coconut oil for cooking, and refined extra virgin organic coconut oil for frying.
Hope that was helpful for everyone. If anyone has any question about nutrition please feel free to contact me.
May the infinite Creator bless you all.

Salaam "progressive",
I have read the ayahs before, thank you.
Would either you or "good logic" eat the meat that has been slaughtered by Sunni Muslims in accordance to their slaughter rituals?
Once youve understood that its about food in general and each INDIVIDUAL who eats must mention the name of God on their food, this will become clear to you.

Perhaps you've misunderstood. I am not asking for advice therefore my understanding, or lack thereof, is irrelevant to the question I posed.
Truthseeker, peace!
Where to start?! I'll write you an exhaustive list of questions when I have a bit more time, Insha'Allah.
Salaam.

I know. You asked others opinion and what they practice. However, that is irrelevant since snything but following God's law is idol worship.

I am very interested in different people's opinion and welcome other people's contributions to this thread as well.

This verse clarifies it better,
Quran 6145
Say, "I do not find within that which was revealed to me forbidden to one who would eat it unless it be a dead animal or blood spilled out or the flesh of swine - for indeed, it is impure -
or it be disobedience, dedicated to other than Allah .
But whoever is forced , neither desiring nor transgressing , then indeed, your Lord is Forgiving and Merciful."Prophet revealed to say, "i do not find anything forbidden to one unless its a dead animal
or blood spilled out or swine flesh, since they are impure,
or something thats not sourced in proper goodness(Allah's) ways.
But still if someone consumes such food forced by necessity and within a limit for ones survival, its no problem.
God is forgiving and merciful"Here there are two things, one is physical impurity related to health and hygiene, the other is the way the food comes to us and the most important part of the verse is the first line, ie some people inventing lies on so and so foods prohibited in the name of God, that we should be aware of.
As of me I will limit eating meat if there are other sources of food available plenty, that gives the same nutrients and will
definitely pray that the food i eat should come from a proper way and think about it before purchasing and consuming. -
Salam es.
On this topic my stance is same as earlier expressed by progressive1993 and Good Logic.
For your other question - if I do eat meat from animals "sacrificed" in sunni way - yes OF COURSE I do. Claiming such meat to be haram would be another innovation in the name of God.
However, if I am aware that an animal has been donated for slaughter (sunni way or otherwise) at the mazaar (mausoleum) / grave of a dead saint (sunni or otherwise), presumably in the hope of extra "blessings"... I would consider such meat haram falling in the category "what is dedicated to other than God".
May Allah guide us all to the straight route.

Arman -
Salaam,
Where I live all meat is "halal slaughtered", so it is not much to say, but I disagree that the method is necessary for it to be perfectly drained of blood. And there will always be small quantities of blood remaining in the animal no matter how you do.
The passage speaks of blood in general and for its consumption and it stems from rules of the 'Children of Israel' and that blood is life. But it is also the deliberate consumption of blood alone. Blood is also not suitable for consumption. It is not only because of a dogmatic rule.
As for "mentioning Allah" that is a false translation because it says "regard Allah" as it is a creation of the Rabb. Dhekr has more of a meaning of regard/honor someone than remember.
As for haraam the word means sanctified, but that is another story. The interpreters of the dark ages disregarded that before haraam it says anema (ا which is supposed to say "It (is) not" as a compound of and . By other words it says that the stuff is not recommended/goodly for consumption.
And as for already dead animals this is obvious. Not even atheist hunters take an animal that has died on its own. It has to do with the risk of contamination and disease.
