Amma (another south asian word) meaning mother, in Aramaic is translated as 'one who holds in the womb. Which is exactly what a mother is!

        alif meem = mother

alif = an oxes head, denoting stength etc.
meem = water, denoting fluidity, motion, emotion, understanding etc.

        alif+meem = strong water

maybe hinting at childbirth, prehaps also as in what bonds a family together, strong/hard/thick water as in glue, prehaps a strong understanding/emotion as water is often assosciated with

God knows best, and i only have a limited understanding, one which may or may not be correct

in terms of 'ma' in the quran, i dont see how you can say it does not make sense in that verse?? 'what is the heavens and the earth'

of course, ma has various forms, one of which is negating. however i dont think this is the case here, as in saying 'nothing is (comparible) to him in the heavens and the earth' or 'he is not in the heavens and the earth' because, in my understanding then it would be 'ma lahu' not 'lahu ma'. but this is only my observation, and what i (hope to be) recalling correctly. i am by no means wise when it comes to arabic.

        Peace

'Amm' means "be from" literally. It is a word used to say mother, usually with an attached suffix indicating whose mother (in Quran's corpus). Same root can also be used to talk about someone's kinship or group identity (e.g. ummah).

Ma (&#1575 means 'no' in Arabic.

          Be well

Check Quran 710, It clearly says 'ma aysha'. Probably hinting to Mother Aysha (ra) Prophets wife. I think with the Quran its not necessarily the way the words are written but how it sounds. As Quran does mean 'Recitation'. And it was received by our Prophet (pbuh) that way.

'And made for you in her/it mother Aiesha'? this makes no sense in the context of the verse..

you are right, the quran is a recitation, however in whatever form there is a difference between 'ma aiesha' and 'maaeisha'

in my understanding the ma prefix denotes a place/form of something, in this case place/form of life i.e 'we have given you in it (the earth) a livelihood'

The more i read quran the more i am convinced ma means mother. Why is it only me (in modern times) have figured this out? Like i said the quran is a rrecitation and not necessarily dependent on the text. This is what i have come to a conclusion. Allah knows best!
