I think it's reasonable to allow people to break their fast for the purposes of informing other people so they won't be confused or alarmed. We're not meant to cause each other harm, distress, or hardship. peace

    Thanks Comrox for your post.

You are free to think anything but in Quran it is clearly commanding to SAY, not to communicate with sign language. Please look at the ayat once again and reflect.

    (

So eat, drink and cool your eyes. Then if you see any human being, say (to him), ?I have vowed a fast (of silence) for the All-Merciful (Allah,) and therefore, I shall never speak to any human today.? (26) (One of the traditional translation by Taqi Usmani picked up by me randomly from quranexplorer.com)

    Peace

Only a starving/ hungry man fasts because he has to.

Other then that all people should eat according to their needs so they can best fulfill their obligations to others - don't you agree you free minded people, you are slaves to no one but yourselves.

There are Nill fasts in the quran.

I believe you misunderstood me. My point in what I said was that

        1. Hand gestures/sign language is a possible but ineffective form of communication.
        2. Written language is more effective, but probably not that accessible at that time. (You need the utensils and you need the knowledge to be able to write and read written language, which I doubt many people at that time possessed.)

So after realized that those two options of communication are ineffective, a person should and would have communicated verbally (in other words, they would have said something as Qur'an conveys) that they are voluntarily not speaking. But after they say this and people understand, then there should be no more talking for that person.

I'm trying to understand the reasoning behind that verse, not twist it.

        Peace. peace

would wish to share some Quranic research (http//www.aastana.com/books/16_E.PDF)
which i came across to broaden the level of comprehension with respect to Shahr Ramdan Soum.

Kindly refer any queries for clarification to the author directly, which seem to be proactively handled on their website.

            Hello Neptin,

I have treated time keeping thoroughly in the book - Natural Time Measurement, which you may find here

            https//www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/1511551151?keywords=natural%20time%20measurement&pc_redir=T1&qid=1429864914&sr=8-1

            R.

            Thank you comrox.
Good response. We share the same problem. I have also been debating whether to fast or not. From the little I have researched, I feel the Mainstream Muslim calendar is incorrect and the timing for Fast and Pilgrimage is incorrect. I have trouble deciding if the Qur'an supports Lunisolar or Lunar calendar.

I also have difficulty in deciding if the fast is 10 days or full month

I believe mmkhan pointed this out

So eat, drink and cool your eyes. Then if you see any human being, say/qul, ?I have vowed an abstinence for the Almighty and therefore, not I will speak/kallim to any human today.? (1926)

The word sawm/abstinence does not inherently link to eating/drinking/speaking, hence the explanation above (most likely).

All information is correct to the best of my knowledge only and thus should not be taken as a fact. One should always seek knowledge and verify for themselves when possible: 17:36, 20:114, 35:28, 49:6, 58:11.

"For the value of fasting consists not in abstinence from food, but in withdrawing from sinful practices; since he who limits his fasting only to an abstinence from meats, is one who especially disparages it. Do you fast? Give me proof of it by your works! Is it said by what kind of works? If you see a poor man, take pity on him! If you see in enemy, be reconciled to him! If you see a friend gaining honour, envy him not! If you see a handsome woman, pass her by! For let not the mouth only fast, but also the eye, and the ear, and the feet, and the hands, and all the members of our bodies."

                  Interesting

To create a habit, or perhaps undo and replace a bad one... we need time and effort. Typically, people quote 20-30 days for forming a habit.
It would be useful to have a time when you know you are going to "purify" yourself deliberately and specifically, because you want to... and not because you are forced to by religion/threat. Saum could be part of a beneficial program of purification (in habits primarily) which is something life in its entirety should be devoted to. Why would we else be here, if not for getting purified.

Perhaps abstaining from food will do some good to us, like give physical benefits as well as mental or spiritual ones. However, it is just as easy, it seems when looking at people throughout the world, to NOT benefit from the food fasting. To me, it many times seems like a month long cultural and social happening... but without lasting effects.

                  Just some ignorant thoughts

I am not fasting this way, but I try to fast from the world constantly. I do not drink tea or coffee, and I do not consume added sugar, nothing containing added sugar, and minimum amounts of salt, and that I do 12 months per year nowadays.

Obviously I do not drink alcohol or smoke either.

Why are you so bent on promoting your own fabrications MOF?
Fasting is notable throughout Scripture Torah, New Testament, Quran. Moses fasted 40 days and so did Jesus. What makes Amenuel different that he can abstain from caffeine, added sugar and salt and call that a fast? hmm

                              Peace Wakas and everyone else,

I believe mmkhan pointed this out

So eat, drink and cool your eyes. Then if you see any human being, say/qul, ?I have vowed an abstinence for the Almighty and therefore, not I will speak/kallim to any human today.? (1926)

The word sawm/abstinence does not inherently link to eating/drinking/speaking, hence the explanation above (most likely).

Good point. Your view of Sawm and mmkhan's view of Sawm is similar to my view on Sawm (I have shared my view on Sawm here).

Quran 1925-26 "Shake the trunk of this palm tree, it will cause ripe dates to fall upon you." "So eat and drink and be happy. If you see any human being, then say, 'I have declared a fast (Sawman) for the Gracious, and I will not talk today to any of the people.'"

In the above-mentioned verses, Al-Quran suggests that Maryam is allowed to eat food (e.g. ripe dates) and drink while she is doing Sawm. Therefore, Sawm doesn't seem to have anything to do with fasting from food and drink in the above-mentioned verses.

It seems that there are several verses in Al-Quran, where the word/term Sawm (abstinence) has nothing to do with food and drink. I'd like to share a link to an excellent post about the word/term Sawm here. Some of you might be interested in reading it.

"SAWM" - ABSTINENCE; another multiple meaning word to be careful with.

                                  HP_TECH,

There has already been your friends presenting fabrications.

Fasting means abstinence and you can fast in many ways.

If you fast by consuming less overall and do not indulge in pleasantries such as sugar then that is considerably mentally stronger than having a fast which you do over the day for a 1/12th of a year and yet eat during the nights. It is the indulgence which is detrimental for the spiritual growth.

Total abstinence fasting can be a healthy practice over shorter intervals, but then it is wisest to not eat more than you usually would in the evening to compensate for not eating during the day. And it is better to not eat at all before sunrise after your sleep and then wait until evening. And you should not be proud of performing the fast and it should not be visible on you or the fast has lost part of its purpose, and you should not have some wild party afterwards.

                                  Be well

would wish to share some Quranic research (http//www.aastana.com/books/16_E.PDF)
which i came across to broaden the level of comprehension with respect to Shahr Ramdan Soum.

Kindly refer any queries for clarification to the author directly, which seem to be proactively handled on their website.

Thanks for this article, I do not agree 100% but it is a good basis.

                                      Peace

Do you recognize the mainstream Muslims' calender as accurate?

                                        Of course not

Will You fast next lunar month?

                                        Of course not

If NO, which calendar do you follow?

Nature's calendar as delineated in the Firmament above.

And then, when will you fast this year?

                                        When I witness
