Al-Islam and Al-Imaan are different to one another in the holy Quran. the association of the two themes to mean the same exact thing has caused a misconstruction in the islamic tradition that has trapped AL ISLAM in a shahadah that is only conditional to the followers of Prophet muhammed.

The PILLARS OF ISLAM that we know of today is THE PILLARS OF AL-IMAAN summoned ONLY to the messenger Muhammeds followers to practice NOT for anybody else and they are

    PILLARS OF IMAAN
1- Testimony of Faith belief in Allah AND his Messenger Muhammed (2 testimonies)
    2- Establish Salat (Prostration Prayer)
    3- Zakat (The Obligatory Charity)
    4- The Fasting of Ramadan
    5- Hajj (The Pilgrimage)

ISLAM IS FITRA as allah states - 2112 So direct your face toward the religion, inclining to truth. the firth of Allah upon which He has created people. No change should there be in the creation of Allah . That is the correct religion, but most of the people do not know". islam is fitra as anyone can come to believe in god as 1 on they're own but IMAAN in scriptures and messengers requires examination and thought as well as gods guidance.

ALL MESSENGERS ARE MUSLIMS as they believed and preached that god is 1 which is the religion of ISLAM. Christianity and Judaism are not independent abrahamic faiths they are 'MILLA' creed of the islamic faith

Muslims followers of the prophet and the Quran are specified directly by name as allah named us "Mumineen", we are muslimeen mumineen believers in god+all prophets+ the last day. whenever allah commands the prophet and his followers he refers to us by this term as seen in the following examples

'O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting.......(AL BAQARAH 183)
'O you who have believed, fulfill contracts......(AL MAIDA 1)
'O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer.......(AL BAQARAH 153)
'O you who have believed, avoid much assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin,And do not spy or backbite each other.... (AL HUJURAT 12)

The followers of jesus are muslims as they believe in god+the last day and follow the gospel of jesus, they are called muslimeen "Nasara" they are differentiated from the muslim jews followers of moses and the torah who are called specifically musimeen "Yahood".

    • 2946 And do not argue with the People of the Scripture except in a way that is best, except for those who commit injustice among them, and say, "We believe in that which has been revealed to us and revealed to you. And our God and your God is one; and we are Muslims to Him." (Al-Ankabut 46).

the example of the difference between ISLAM & IMAAN are in this following ayat - 4914 The bedouins say, "We have believed." Say, "You have not believed; but say, 'We have submitted,' for imaan has not yet entered your hearts. And if you obey Allah and His Messenger, He will not deprive you from your deeds of anything. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful."(AL HUJURAT 14)

    • 4917 they consider it a favor to you that they have accepted Islam. Say, "Do not consider your Islam a favor to me. Rather, Allah has conferred favor upon you that He has guided you to imaan, if you should be truthful."(AL HUJARAT 17).

here is also another ayah differentiating between Muslims Mu'mins(believers); - 3335
Surely, Muslim men and muslim women, believing men and believing women, devout men and devout women, truthful men and truthful women, patient men and patient women, humble men and humble women, charitable men and charitable women, fasting men and fasting women, men and women who guard their chastity, and men and women who remember Allah often for all of them Allah has prepared forgiveness and a great reward (AL-AHZAB 35).

The majority of people on earth believe in god and are muslims but not all are or can be Mu'mineen (believers in the prophet and the quran).

    • 12103 And most of the people, although you strive for it, are not believers" (yusuf 103) here allah says Muminoon NOT Muslimoon.

Can someone be a muslim without belief?

      Belief must come before submission.

Deen with God is al-islam. So iman must come before islam.

a muslim is a believer in 1 god this is the essence of most faiths is ISLAM. When belief in allah alone is mentioned the word 'muslimeen' is alongside him. the followers of the quran and the messenger Muhammed are "Muslimeen Mumineen". when we say the shahadah its two testimonies that god is 1 AND muhamemd as his messenger . there are two IMAANS in god and in the prophet.

here is an example of the two Imaans; - 5728
O you who have believed(first belief), fear Allah and believe in His Messenger(second belief); He will give you a double portion of His mercy and make for you a light by which you will walk and forgive you; and Allah is Forgiving and Merciful. (AL HADID 2.

And those who believed (first belief) and do righteous deeds and believed in what has been sent down upon Muhammad - and it is the truth from their Lord - He will remove from them their misdeeds and amend their condition. (MUHAMMED 2).

        THIS IS ISLAM/MUSLIM

        • 2112 whoever submits his face in Islam to Allah while being a doer of good will have his reward with his Lord. And no fear will there be concerning them, nor will they grieve. (A-LBAQARAH 112).

What do you get out of saying two testimonies? This lip service has done nothing good for muslim societies of today.

The light is Quran. If you do not follow it then lip service is of no use.

Imaan and correct actions are inseparable.

How do you submit your face in Islam to Allah?

The word belief/faith does not translate the world Iman properly. Edip-Layth translation has translated this acknowledgement.

            http//quranix.org/2#3

            Note 2
We translated the word yuminun as "they acknowledge." The verbs and adjectives generated from the root AMaNa have been translated with different forms of the word ?believe.? However, ?believe? does not accurately describe the positive meaning ascribed to the root AMaNa by the Quran. According to the Quran, guesswork, wishful thinking, following the majority, and believing without investigation and evidence, are not acts of AMaNa. The majority of people, according to the Quran, do not YuMiNun (1117; 12103; 131; 4059). Knowing that the majority of people do "believe in God" or believe in some form of religious teachings, choosing to translate the appropriate Quranic phrase, say in 12103, as "the majority of people do not believe" creates a contradiction. Belief in something, according to its common usage, may not need reasoning or acknowledgement of truth, but acknowledgement implies an intellectual process to search for and find the truth.

Islam is not a proper name; it is a description of the mindset and actions of those who submit themselves to God alone.

Muslim' is a term for anyone who submits or surrenders their will to the One true God of the Universe with obedience.
This is irrespective of whether or not they have belief in the veracity of the Quran or its messenger.

I think my response was relevant to your question "Can someone be a muslim without belief?" .

I had the same question before . Now I know what is meant by Iman. Its not just belief but acknowledging the truth and veracity of the God, scripture/Quran, messenger etc by going through a process of verification and pondering upon the signs/proof.

1736 Do not uphold what you have no knowledge of. For the hearing, eyesight, and mind, all these are held responsible for that

But Islam/submission is the prerequisite to go to that level. Because if someone does not come to the mindset of submitting to the idea of a one higher power/creator driven by the natural inclination of how God has created human being.

3030 So establish yourself to the system of monotheism. It is the nature that God has made the people on. There is no changing in God's creation. Such is the pure system, but most people do not know.

To submit to God alone we don't need any books or messengers.

When you attain Iman you know for sure there is God and the information God has sent us through books and messengers to be truth. And when you KNOW something you dont need to simply rely on belief/faith.

                Peace

Islam comes from root which has a meaning of soundness, defect less, completeness etc
Imaan comes from root which has a meaning of trust, peace etc

Any word derived from a root, reflect meaning of that root.

Messengers and books confirm if your understanding of God is correct.

YES you can be a muslim in the 21st century without having to believe in prophets or follow a scripture thats the case of the majority of people on this earth currently, they can come to islam(belief in 1 god) like abraham did on they're own. thats how abraham came to belief in god after observing gods creation that everything is at a state of change and not fixed except GOD he does not change. he submitted to god with no scripture or under the influence of a prophet. we the followers of muhammed follow his "MILLA" The jews and christian muslims 'milla" is not "hanifiya". theyre scripture is fixed for a specific time/space, its laws are strict, very specified and has become outdated while the laws of the quran does not even make up 30 and is flexible, its a shariah (way) based on limits/degrees not 1 fixed punishments.(scholars of fiqh have forgotten about the quran and focus more on traditions and historical practices as well as applying many of the laws of the jews).

people can come to islam on they're own thats the minimum requirement but they also require ethics and morality which most people have if they deeply apply thought and humanity into they're action. we the followers of a scripture have a path to follow and our belief is not out of a state of an accident, we are theoretically guided we have something to fall back on if we get lost or misguided while muslims without a path or a scripture don't don't have that luxury. people who live in secluded islands or far lands have there fair share of islam. they must be able to come to a form of belief in a creator on they're own by questioning they're existence. Allah is fair he is who all people and for all places not the god of the middle east or west. humanity has developed so much that many people the majority NOW do not bow to idols nor believe that its the creator of all things. To get people to stop creating physical mini gods or worship the moon or a tree was the main mission of all messengers.

You can tell that the word "AMANA/MUMIN" is terribly mistranslated.
The stance of the quran is that a Mumin is a higher degree than a muslim. Yet in their translation the first is translated to "believer" while the latter "submitter".

It's clear that in reality, people believe all the time, in anything and everything for whatever reasons. Upholding a belief system (whether entirely or superficially) is quite easy especially if influenced by ignorance or lack of knowledge.

Amana/Mumin in its original sense stipulate a kind of confidence, perhaps a confidence in the way of being/living, not out of ignorance or stubborneness but out of pure harmony with one's mind.

But to build such "confidence", one must resolve to the process of open-mindedness, critical thinking and sound reasoning.

                            http//corpus.quran.com/search.jsp?q=lem%3Alam~aA+pos%3At

When I go through different verses in Quran it seems that islam is the object. No islam without imaan.

I guess one becomes a muslim by fulfilling command in 2177

IN REGARDS TO AYA 2177 THAT CONCERNS THE MUSLIM BELIEVERS OF GOD AND THE POPHET BECAUSE WHEN YOU BELIEVE IN A SCRIPTURE YOU SUBMIT TO THE IDEA OF ANGELS, SATAN, PROPHETS AND FULFIL THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE QURAN.

ALLAH HAS CLEARLY DIFFERENTIATED BETWEEN MUSLIMS FOLLOWERS OF A SCRIPTURE AND THOSE THAT ARE ONLY MUSLIMS SUBMITTERS OF GOD WITH NOTHING TO FOLLOW. WE MUST READ THE TEXT WORD FOR WORD BECAUSE GOD DOESNT CONTRADICT HIMSELF.

THE PILLARS OF AL-ISLAM IS IS SUPPOSED TO BE THE PILLARS OF AL-IMAN SUMMONED TO THE BELIEVERS OF THE MESSENGER MUHAMMED AND THE QURAN ONLY. THE SCHOLARS HIJACKED THE WORD MUSLIM AND MADE IT ONLY APPLY TO US AS FOLLOWERS OF THE PROPHET IN ORDER TO GET PEOPLE TO BECOME MUSLIM BELIEVERS WHICH IS A HUGE BLOW TO THE REAL TEACHINGS OF THE QURAN.

You can tell that the word "AMANA/MUMIN" is terribly mistranslated.
The stance of the quran is that a Mumin is a higher degree than a muslim. Yet in their translation the first is translated to "believer" while the latter "submitter".

This verse is addressing those with imaan to become muslim before death. So what I see here is imaan (to be in a state of peace, security, trustfulness by accepting only One Master and following His commands) is first and then one try to become sound and defect less (muslim).

There are no acts of worship in Qoran sister.
In fact none of the rituals are "worship".
Worship in Qoran is following "Sirst Al Mustaqueen" . 6151-153. They are the major commandments .
GOD is in no need of rituals. Rituals are for growing our soul.
Traditional Islam has turned GOD s religion upside down.
The main pillars in Qoran are Justice, good conduct, respect, peaceful person, good deeds. seek knowledge, submit sincerely from the heart... if you want to call them that.
What happened to these pillars in Traditional islam?
Sorry sister ,the pillars of Islam are made up by the rulers to play with peoples fear and to stay in power in control of a made up religion called "Islam"!
                                    GOD bless you sister.
                                    Peace.

THESES ACTS OF WORSHIP/RITUALS CONCERNS THE FOLLOWERS OF THE QURAN AND THE PROPHET

                                      1. BELIEF IN ALLAH AND THE PROPHET AS HIS MESSENGER
                                        2 .ESTABLISH PRAYER
                                      2. ZAKAT
                                      3. FASTING RAMADAN
                                      4. HAJJ

ALL THESE ARE CONSIDERED SUMMONED ONLY TO THE THE PROPHETS FOLLOWERS NOT OTHER MUSLIMS OF DIFFERENT MILLA (CREED)
THEY ARE PILLARS OF IMAAN NOT ISLAM. I ALREADY EXPLAINED THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO.

IM A MUSLIM BELIEVER IN ALLAH THE QURAN AND THE MESSENGER I PERFORM THESE REQUIREMTENTS TO THE BEST OF MY ABILITY. THAT MAKES ME A MUSLIM MU'MIN.
