    Salaam All

2403 The adulterer shall not marry save an adulteress or an idolatress, and the adulteress none shall marry save an adulterer or an idolater. All that is forbidden unto believers.

    Yusuf Ali
2403 Let no man guilty of adultery or fornication marry and but a woman similarly guilty, or an Unbeliever nor let any but such a man or an Unbeliever marry such a woman to the Believers such a thing is forbidden.

    Khalifa
2403 The adulterer will end up marrying an adulteress or an idol worshiper, and the adulteress will end up marrying an adulterer or an idol worshiper. This is prohibited for the believers.

What do you think about this ayat (marrying adulters)? If it's prohibited how can women ever know whether their bridegrooms have had an affair or not? Maybe in shariah laws it would be possible with public lashing (except no witnessed affairs) but what about now? As for men, are we supposed to ask our girlfriends this before marriage? Like "have you ever commited adultery" or "are you a virgin" This would be rude.

    Any ideas appreciated.

    Peace...

      peace be upon you,

I agree with Shabbir Ahmed's interpretation regarding 243

[Fornication and adultery are a form of idol worship for, such people submit to their desires. The word AW here is explanatory. AW = Or + That is + Namely + Call it + In other words. AW appears in this format instead of 'or' in many places in the Qur?an such as 236, 243, 2562. Nikah, in the lexicon, applies to genuine wedlock as well as to sexual relations between a man and a woman outside wedlock, depending on the context. The very common rendering of this verse to the effect that an adulterer is allowed to marry only an adulteress or idolatress, and vice versa, is absolutely erroneous and contrary to the Big Picture of the Qur?an which lays great emphasis on reform and forgiveness. And it defies all sense. Whereas many translators have maintained that such men and women will end up marrying their like. This is obviously the result of not bearing in mind the meaning of AW and Nikah, and going against common sense. Finally, the Book of Allah does not downgrade people once they have repented or received penalty. Oh, yet another point! After painting an X-rated scenario of Madinah as if adultery/fornication was going on right and left and coming to public knowledge, in the very life-time of the exalted Prophet, the Imams of the old come up with a horrible joke. They insult Hazrat Ali that he decreed for an adulterer to receive a hundred stripes to fulfill the Command in the Qur'an, and then stoned him to death to fulfill the command of Hadith!

          Salam,

2403 The adulterer will end up marrying an adulteress or an idol worshiper, and the adulteress will end up marrying an adulterer or an idol worshiper. This is prohibited for the believers.

This is my understanding of the verse as I have done a little research on such topics.

          • Those who comit adultrey should be lashed in public as per God's laws.

          • When the public notices such people, they know who they are and the reason for their punishment.

          • Thus, when time comes for these adultrers to get married, it is our (the group that witnesses the lashing of these people) to make sure that they are married to either similar adultrers or idol worshippers - again as per God's laws.

This is my understanding of the verse. In my opnion, though these people are punished for their crime, I can see that God is still angry with them as the verse ends by saying "....this is prohibitied for the believers".

That itself tells me that God does not consider such people true believers. The other point is that God wants such people to marry idol worshippers (and adultrers) for the gross crime they have committed - even after they have deserved their punishment.

As for your question, "how are we to know if your groom/bride is a virgin or not?", I guess it becomes a bit difficult to answer this question in today's modern world. Back in older days, people lived in a tribe or a small community. It was very difficult if not impossible for one member of the tribe to leave their tribe and join another one. Today, needless to say you can have relations with someone in one country and fly to another country and not get punished anywhere.

Yes, I agree it is a bit difficult to approach this matter in the modern world. I'd say trust God and yes go ahead and ask the person you are going to marry about their past and present life.

          Hope this helps,
          "Dove".

what does your hadith and sunnah books say about it? Research and inform us will you? I'm sure you can find a hadith about this subject in 2 million hadiths. Try finding the hadiths which muslim authorized as "sahih" but didn't add to his book they can come in handy too!

              Salam,
1st of all id like 2 say tht 'non-virgin' wld not be the right term 2 use since a previously married woman wld also be a 'non-virgin' but not an adulteress. The verse clearly says tht adulterers n idolators may not be married by believers. HOWEVER dont forget tht after sincere repentance neither an idol worshipper nor an adulterer remains wht he was. Eg somebody was a Trinitarian Christian worshipping Jesus as GOD be4. Hes an idolator n such a person cannot be married 2 a believer. However when he repents n submits 2 GOD then obviously he aint an idol worshipper any more. So the verse means those ppl WHO R STILL IN IDOLATROUS OR ADULTRESS STATE OF MIND. I hope this is clear now. GOD Bless!

Your arabic is good. Zina or whatever it is, does it mean adultery or fornication? Is the ayat for married ones only? Then we can marry those who commited fornication? Doesn't make any sense.

Thank you and have a nice day...

Khi- Salam. This is not a good translation. Its not 'guilty of adultery' but 'adulterer(zaani, noun)'. 'Zina' means any kind of illegal sexual intercourse be it premarital or post marital. GOD Bless!

The thing is how can somebody verify if their groom / bride is a virgin or not before marriage? Especially women? I don't think any adulter / fornicator will be honest when asked.

                    Peace...

                        Peace,

The answer has been touched on already.

The present state of the person is what counts not what was before. Like someone indicated a divorced woman is allowed to be married so it has nothing to do with virginity.

It's about what a person is NOW and believes NOW; not what they did previously.

                        Regards.

                          Salaam All,

In the Ayah 243, there is no 'Lann' meaning shall not.
There is 'Laa'. It can be used as 'Don't'. But that meaning does not fit with the other words becaue the Ayah is not an order. It is stating a fact that the adulterer as well as the idolator should expect that his/her mate to be of the same bahavior, whether he or she knew about it or not. If it didn't happen in the past then it will happen in the future. So people should realize that fact very well and not go to such a path because it will come back to them one way or another.

                            Salam All!

I share Taj's view on this question. I think the God just told us what will happen - because He will lead us this way. If we are sincere believers, He will bless us with a good rewarding relation. If we are not, we shall get no better that what we deserve...

I also wonder about the exact signification of "zina" Is it adultery only or adultery and/or fornication ? This is a very difficult question, because we should have to figure out what marriage is, before understanding what adultery is. Fornication, to my understanding, is not all sex outside "marriage" understood as the state of being married in the eyes of the world that surrounds us. The most important is to be "married" in the eyes of God...

                            Elke

                              Salaam Elke,

Thanks for sharing with me my view, also allow me to add this bit
The community may not even find out (most probably will never!) about the adultery of a person but that very person ( the adulterer) will eventually know the adultery of his/her mate. So the Ayah is basically a reminder to that person that what you do in hiding will be done unto you!

For the second part of your post
I understand adultery= zina as having more than one mate at a time. Because marriage to me is committing to one mate, whether that marriage is recognized to the public or not. And that is why adultery is brought together with idolatry= shirk in one "breath"! Idolatry (spiritual) is having more than one god and adultery (social) is having more than one mate.

Khi- Well ur forgetting the last part of tht ayah which says '.... This is prohibited for the believers.'
The adulterer will end up marrying an adulteress or an idol worshiper, and the adulteress will end up marrying an adulterer or an idol worshiper. This is prohibited for the believers.

Khi- Salam. Tht is not possble since in the traditional understanding n even according 2 RK the Quran allows 4 upto 4 wives. 'zina' has always meant 2 be illicit sexual reltionships whether one is married or not. GOD Bless!

                                          Salaam Khi,

There is no polygamy in the Quran. The only person who was allowed and mentioned to be having several wives is Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

And the translation that you posted
This is prohibited for the believers

                                          Your translation is not accurate.
In the Quran it is written in the past tense.
And my understanding of it is as follows " And that would never happen to the Believers".
