I just have a question, since Mary was mentioned a few posts back. I know that the traditional belief is that Mariam sister of Aaron was different from Mariam mother of Jesus. But I always get confused when i read in the Quran

1928 "O sister of Aaron, your father was not a bad man, and your mother was never unchaste!"

Both are named Mariam and both are referred to as Aaron's sister? I don't understand. What does it mean when Mary is called sister of Aaron?

    Thanks.

Probably she has a brother named Aaron too? Two Aarons in scriptural history, one prophet and Musa's sidekick, the other just a supporting character

      Salaams Zachlipset, Andya, All

There is only one woman with the name of Mariam in the Quran and she is the Daughter of Imran Mariam the Mother of Prophet Easa. In the Quran the name of Moosa's (and Haroon's) Sister is not mentioned at all.

Now from the reaction of her mother, it looks to me that Mariam (the Mother of Easa) was an only child.

In Arabic, 'Sister of..' is an expression, a figure of speech to emphasize a certain thing that a woman would possess and is similar to someone well-known. In the case of Mariam, she must have resembled Haroon (Brother of Moosa) in some way, could be his religious manner or maybe his personality.

Arabs would for example describe an exceptionally strong and determined woman Sister of Men.

Also the word 'Brother of..'. It is used as a friendly gesture to welcome a passer-by O Brother of Arabs. It is also used in other places too.

Other words are 'Mother of..', 'Daughter of..', 'Son of..'

Also the Both have been given the same father Imran (Amram)

6612 "And Marium, the daughter of Imran, who guarded her chastity"

1Ch 63 "And the children of Amram; Aaron, and Moses, and Miriam"

Num 2659 "And the name of Amram's wife was Jochebed ... and she bore unto Amram Aaron and Moses, and Miriam their sister"

There is only one woman with the name of Mariam in the Quran and she is the Daughter of Imran

Amram (Imran) was the father of Miriam (Sister of Aaron) also

I understand what you are saying Taj, about sisterhood and brotherhood, but wouldn't God had seen the confusion it would create by saying Mariam sister of Aaron when he knows that Aaron already has a blood sister called Mariam.

Also when when he knows Aaron's father is called Amram (Imran)

Lo! Allah preferred Adam and Noah and the Family of Abraham and the Family of 'Imran above (all His) creatures.

The Family of Imran was Moses, Aaron and Mariam

          Peace Albion,

The name of Moosa's Sister (PBUT) is not mentioned in the Quran so I cannot assume that it is Mariam, with all due respect.
Moosa's family name is not mentioned also!

No it not mentioned in the quran but it is mentioned many times in the fully detailed scripture (Al-Kitab) given to Moses

6154] And we gave Moses the scripture, COMPLETE with the BEST commandments, and DETAILING (Tafseel) EVERYTHING, and a guideand mercy, that they may believe in meeting their Lord.

Btw Albion, in the Arabic dictionaries, the word 'Tafseel' does not mean 'Detailed'. It means well-designed, well-cut. It involves the architectural and sturctual side.
I know that some people here think that it means 'Detailed' but I searched that word well and found that it has a different meaning, one that is very logical to me.

Its indeed very funny to read Albion's post

He seems to accept what Al-quraan says when it SUITS him. Al-Quraan is very clear about its own detailedness

Say "If the whole of mankind and Jinns were to gather together to produce the like of THIS QURAAN, they could not produce the like thereof, even if they backed up each other with help and support.
And We have explained to man, in THIS QURAN EVERY KIND OF SIMILITUDE yet the greater part of men refuse (to receive it) except with ingratitude! (17/88-89)

                  Salaam,

Albion never seemed to look at the following ayat either

1037 This Quran could not have been produced without God, but it is to authenticate what is already present, and to give detail to the Scripture in which there is no doubt, from the Lord of the worlds.

                    Salaamun Alaikum,
Dear brothers and sisters in Islam,

No it not mentioned in the quran but it is mentioned many times in the fully detailed scripture (Al-Kitab) given to Moses

6154] And we gave Moses the scripture, COMPLETE with the BEST commandments, and DETAILING (Tafseel) EVERYTHING, and a guideand mercy, that they may believe in meeting their Lord.

If you think that "Al-Kitaab" is a fully detailed scripture then you should look at the verse mentioned in Al-Quraan

                    "Ulaa-ikallazeena aataiynaahum-ALKITAABA wa-alhikma wa-annubuwwata.... " 689

Indeed Al-Kitaab IS a fully detailed scripture and it was given to ALL PROPHETS... Not only to Moses or Jesus.

Because every body needs the guidance in full... So, why Allah will only put His mercy on people of Moses by sending a detailed scripture? A detailed scripture "Al-Kitaab" has been given to all the Prophets for their people for the complete guidance.

And most importantly "Al-Kitaab" mentioned in the above quoted verse is in singular form that means only ONE book has been given to ALL prophets.

                    Any questions?

May Allah guide us all towards the truth.

                    Regards,

                    Mohammed Mahtab Khan

                      1. This is the Scripture in which there is no doubt, a guide for the righteous.

                      2. The sending down of this Scripture, without a doubt, from the Lord of the worlds.

                      3. Or do they Say ?He fabricated it!? No, it is the truth from your Lord, so that you may warn a people who never received a warner before you, in order that they may be guided.

                      Peace

                        Salaams Zein,

                        1. This is the Scripture in which there is no doubt, a guide for the righteous.

It is not 'This is'= Hatha. It is 'That is' = Thaalika.
'That is' = Thaalika is used to refer to something that is not right in front of you. It is used to point to something that is far from you.
I know that 'Al Kitaab' does not mean Al Quran. And I know that the word 'Al Kitaab' does have more than one meaning of which 'The Scripture' cannot be one of them!
The word 'Al Kitaab' needs to be studied closely.

Salaam TAJ and thanks for the clarification.

Would you mind explaining 322 and 323. Other than a particular word, what do you think those 2 verses are talking about. Example - they say 'He fabricated it'... who's he and what's it?

                            Salaamun Alaikum,
Dear brothers and sisters in Islam,

                            I agree with you 100%.

It can be seen from the following verses

                            "Thaalika AL-KITAABU laa raiyba feehi, hudan-LILMUTTAQEEN" 22

                            "Shahru Ramadhaanal-lazee unzila feehi AL-QURAANU hudan-LIN-NAAS" 2185

Al-Kitaab is a guidance for Muttaqeen
Al-Quraan is a guidance for Naas

This both cannot be the same.

                            Another view

KTB is the root word of Al-Kitaab that means "Write"
QRN is the root word of Al-Quraan that means "Read"

My understanding and my current stand is as follows

"What we see in Written form" is Al-Kitaab
"What we read (seeing or without seeing)" is Al-Quraan

And one thing is for sure that Al-Kitaab got the explainations for every thing in detail unlike Al-Quraan.

                            How?

We must have to look at the usage of words and the pattern of writing. For example

"....... faghsilu wujoohakum wa aydiyakum ilal maraafiqi wamsahoo bi ru-oosikum wa arjulakum ilal ka'abaiyn....." 56

Most of the poeple to whom I met think that washing of foot is not mentioned in this verse only touching the feet or clearning it with wet hands is enough. But if you read it (Al-Quraan), you may not get the explaination. But if you look at the writing (Al-Kitaab) you will surely get the explaination how it is refering to washing.

Please look at the capitalized letters below

                            "....... FAGHSILU wujoo-HA-kum wa aydi-YA-kum ilal maraafiqi WAMSAHOO bi ru-oo-SI-kum wa arju-LA-kum ilal ka'abaiyn......." 56

Faghsilu - is refering to "HA", "YA" and also "LA"
Wamsahoo - is refering to "SI" (please note that it is not as above form or pattern "SA")

And "LA" from "arjuLAkum" is refering to faghsilu (wash) and it is not refering to wamsahoo.

To make it more clear if you look at the same verse further as

"........ fatayammamoo sa-'eedan tayyiban FAMSAHOO (same as above Wamsahoo) bi wujoo-HI-kum wa ayyd-IE-kum minhu......" 56

You can clearly see in here that when it is refering to Famsahoo or Wamsahoo the pattern of words is changed as

Famsahoo - "HI" and "IE" instead of "HA" and "YA" as used above
Faghsiloo - "HA" and "YA" instead of "HI" and "IE" as used above

I hope this clarifies the above.

This is just my personal understanding. All suggestions or comments are most welcome.

May Allah guide us all towards the Truth.

                            Regards,

I have tried to search this topic in the search section but could not find a relevant answer so I am starting this as a new post.

Why all the prophets that have been mentioned in Quran are men? Has there ever been a woman prophet? Why not?

                              salam caveman .

from what i have read i can say that Nabi means the one who is on a higher level (where he receives revelation from God) or the one who is sent by God to give news or information .

although Marium ,the mother of Jesus was not sent to give news or to warn anyone , she recieved revelation or news from God . so she was also on that higher ground where she can recieve revelation . maybe that makes her a Nabi ? i m not 100% sure .

017.110 Say "Call upon Allah, or call upon Rahman by whatever name ye call upon Him, (it is well) for to Him belong the Most Beautiful Names. Neither speak thy Prayer aloud, nor speak it in a low tone, but seek a middle course between."

                                1. What is God?s Personal Name (Very important because ALL prophets that come MUST come in this name)

I dont clearly understand this query but I believe it refers to gods personal name. La ilaha Illallaha. If there were many gods you need a name to distinguish yourself.

I have heard that jews called god eli & Ilohim, Muhammad - Allah. In the case of Gabriel he refers to god in the laguage of the prophet.

Before the prophet Muhammad the arabs had many gods and Allah was one of them. He had a particular purpose.

THere is one god and one religion.

The only religion approved by GOD is "Submission." Ironically, those who have received the scripture are the ones who dispute this fact, despite the knowledge they have received, due to jealousy. For such rejecters of God?s revelations, GOD is most strict in reckoning. (319)

                                Zoroastrianism

1400 BCE was the year Zarathustra was visited by the angel Vohu Manah (Good Thought). He was told of the one god (Ahura Mazda = Wise Wise Lord) who created the the universe and worship him and none other than god and Zarathustra was his prophet. Zarathustra or Zoroaster preached Monotheism.

                                See other similarities.

Before Zoroaster there were many deities including Ahura Mazda. The day he claims to have seen an angel of Ahura Mazda who has sole prominence eliminated all beliefs in other deities.
Before Prophet Muhammad, arabs believed in many deities and Allah was one of them.
Ahura Mazda. The creator and uncreated.
The Holy Spirit ? Gods active agent or angel who god created.
Evil spirit ? ?Angra Mainhu? is the one foe of god. He is the creator of evil on earth and leads people astray against god.

Since Submission is the only religion like all other religions Zoroasters teachings could have been innovated. Then he would have called god Ahura Mazda. We call god "God".

The Quran says Islam is the only religion since creation. Do we think Arabic was created at the time the first atom was created? Or the single cell ameba was created?

Then what do you think Abraham would have called Islam. How about Moses, Aaron, Hud, Saleh, Shuaib & Noah. If you think that while speaking Aramaic Prophet Jesus called it Islam it is nonsense. Islam means Submission. What ever language you say it in it still is submission. A Muslim is a person who submits to god.

Think about the things people do to separate from others. Idolize their community, family, prophet, region, country, Color, race, money, power, clothes even religion itself. They idolize these things they can name. My community is X and we are special people descendants of Y. this is because they can give a name to their idol. Everything above can be given a name. Color ? Tan, Clothes ? rich, prophet-Jesus, family-Caesar, region-north etc. these names can be given a definition. Rich clothed people are affluent in society, Jesus is the son of god, Caesar is a royal family, etc.

If our religions name is Islam then we can give definitions. Islam = X+Y+100 multiplied by 1192 as most people do. But Islam is not a name. It is something we have to do. We have to submit to God. Where do we find out how to submit to God? Listen to gods words. Read the Quran. It?s actually very simple if we think clearly. This is how Muslims are meant to be.

Do you think that Abraham called God Allah? Ilohim was a jewish word in which they referred to god. Obviously Abraham would have called Allah by that name. Definitely not Allah. There is a reference in the Hebrew bible to god as Alah which is very close. Allah is an Arabic word for god and Muhammad was born an Arab. Jesus was a jew. Can both be Muslims? Jesus calls god ilahim and we call him Allah. Are we talking about separate gods? His gods name is ilahim and my gods name is Allah. I am the man and you are nothing.

This is how most Muslims and Islamic factions idolize their own religion and develop the need to be superior over the other. Look different, to be different in order to feel different. These are the reasons the world will never see peace.

Allah is not something like Krishna, Shiva, Atlas or Zeus. These are names that you can name a man with if you want. When a person says my gods name is Allah it is like saying my fathers name is dad. In psychological studies there is a story of a toddler who was asked his name and the child said ?No mikey?. The name was mikey and the mother always says no mikey don?t do that and child has head it so much that he has decided to himself that his name is no Mikey.

                                Sorry that was too long.

                                1. How do you recognise a FALSE Prophet (This is VERY important and is not left out of ANY scripture)

                                2. How should we test a prophet to first see if they are from God or from a trickster spirit (Again this is VERY important and NOT left out of any scripture)

I agree. How do you propose?

                                Shohorab

                                  Salam Taj, Zein,

The word "thalika" can mean that the God doesn't speak about the BOOK but a specific Book. The Reading is a book among several books (2285) and Wherein are valuable books (written lessons, commands....983).

"Thalika alkitabu" refers to what is sent upon the messenger (322).

We can read the verse 22 in other way

In that book undoubtedly is a guide for the righteous.
Thalika alkitabu larayba feehi hudan lilmuttaqeena

                                  like in 133

                                  1. And He is the One who stretched-out the land, and made in it stabilizers and rivers, and from every fruit He made a pair of two; the night covers the day. In that are signs for a people who will think.
Wahuwa allathee madda al-ardawajaAAala feeha rawasiya waanharan waminkulli alththamarati jaAAala feeha zawjayniithnayni yughshee allayla alnnahara inna fee thalika laayatin liqawmin yatafakkaroona

                                  2. If He willed, He could still the winds, leaving them motionless on top of it. In that are signs for every one who is patient, thankful.
In yasha/ yuskini alrreehafayathlalna rawakida AAala thahrihiinna fee thalika laayatin likulli sabbarinshakoorin

In 133, 4233 in the same way than 22 the God doesn't use hatha/this.

That book in 22 refers to what is written in the Reading and this is valid for all books (2285)

                                  A. Shabir
22 Allah?s Guidance is right before you in the form of this noble Book, recorded by the most honorable scribes appointed by the Messenger (8013-16). The Almighty Himself guarantees the Truth of this Revelation, its explanation and its preservation. And you will find it free of all contradiction ((482), (1037), (159), (2949), (322), (522-3), (7517-19)). Therefore, there is absolutely no question or any doubt about the authority and authenticity of this Glorious Scripture. And, you will soon notice as you proceed, that this Book leaves no lingering doubts in a seeking mind. If you remember that this is a Book of guidance, and hence, treat it as such, the hard fact will dawn upon you that this is The Path-finding Guide for all those who wish to journey through life in blissful honor and security.

                                    Salaamun Alaikum,
Dear brothers and sisters in Islam,

The word "thalika" can mean that the God doesn't speak about the BOOK but a specific Book. The Reading is a book among several books (2285) and Wherein are valuable books (written lessons, commands....983).

"Thalika alkitabu" refers to what is sent upon the messenger (322).

Thalika alkitabu larayba feehi hudan lilmuttaqeena

I understand that "Thalika AlKitaabu" is refering to "Alif", "Laam" & "Meem".

                                    As you said

                                    like in 133

                                    1. If He willed, He could still the winds, leaving them motionless on top of it. In that are signs for every one who is patient, thankful.
In yasha/ yuskini alrreehafayathlalna rawakida AAala thahrihiinna fee thalika laayatin likulli sabbarinshakoorin

"Thalika" is refering to what is said before as in the above two references.

In the same way it might be refering to "Alif", "Laam" & "Meem".

                                    What do you think?

In 133, 4233 in the same way than 22 the God doesn't use hat
                                    ha/this.

That book in 22 refers to what is written in the Reading and this is valid for all books (2285)

As per my knowledge Allah never used "Thalika" for "AlQuraan"... it is always "Hatda AlQuraan" and also "Hatda" is not used with "ALKitaab".

What I think is AlQuraan is what you can see and you can read and you can print and what ever you like to do you can do... because it is in the hands of us. So, "Haadta" is used for AlQuraan.

But "AlKitaab" is the guidance for "Muttaqeen" 22 that means it cannot be seen or understand by a lay man. So, it is said "Thalika". As it is not near to everyone. We need to study and strive hard to reach to understand what Al-Kitaab is even if it is IN AlQuraan. In that way it cannot be "Haadta".

May Allah open our hearts for guidance towards the right path.

                                    Regards,

                                    MMKhan

Thanks for that Taj, it makes sense and also makes it clear that 22 is referring the scripture that came before the quran.

And I know that the word 'Al Kitaab' does have more than one meaning of which 'The Scripture' cannot be one of them!

The Arabic language was derived from the Hebrew... And the Hebrew has many similarities to Arabic

nabiy' (nabi) a prophet or inspired man
qara' (qara) read, preach, proclaim, say
sepher (Suhuf) book, evidence, letter, scroll.

The easiest way to find out what Kitab means is the look at what was given to Moses, since the quran says Moses was given the fully detailed "Kitab"

"And it came to pass, when Moses had made an end of writing (kathab) the words of this law (torah) in a book/scroll (sepher)"

                                      kathab- (ktb)
A primitive root; to grave; by implication to write (describe, inscribe, prescribe, subscribe) - describe, record, prescribe, subscribe, write (-ing, -ten).

"But I will show thee that which is noted in the Scripture (kathab) of truth"

                                      kathab-
something written, that is, a writing, record or book - register, scripture, writing.

Al-Kitab using the meaning from the hebrew text where it was originaly derived from, and in the context it is used in the quran, clearly means the writting, the scripture, the written words of God.

                                        Peace everybody,

Getting back to Caveman's original inquiry which started this thread as to whether or not all prophets are men, I'd like to address this if I may.

In many verses in the quran, GOD addresses the recepient in the second person male singular. One example is 24 where it says "We have sent down 'alaiyKA, which is to you (male singular). There are other verses where He addresses the prophet and tells him to instruct His Wives on something specific and there are even more verses where GOD refers to prophet and messenger as HE and HIM.

Of the prophets that He has mentioned by name (such as in Chapter 26) He refers to them as "Him" or "He". (2612, 36, 45, 70, 119, etc.)

It is my humble and sincere belief that messengership and prophethood are undertakings that are to be approached and pursued seriously, which means that it can be a full-time and dangerous job. There are two things about a woman that will make it all but impossible for them to pursue that particular endevour in a balanced way
                                        Menstruation and pregnancy.

It is these two things that will keep a woman from working at any given time in the path o messengership and prophethood.

Please keep in mind that I am in no way downplaying the role, talents, abilities or intelligence o women. In fact, I think that women are as equally equipped to spread the message and receive inspiration as men. But I also believe that menstruation and pregnancy are the two difference makers that make the quran address the men concerning messenger and prophet.

GOD Knows Best and if I am incorrect on my understanding I ask that GOD forgive me and teach me the correct understanding.

                                        Peace.

                                          Salam mmkhan,

The word "thalika" can mean that the God doesn't speak about the BOOK but a specific Book. The Reading is a book among several books (2285) and Wherein are valuable books (written lessons, commands....983).

"Thalika alkitabu" refers to what is sent upon the messenger (322).

We can read the verse 22 in other way

In that book undoubtedly is a guide for the righteous.
Thalika alkitabu larayba feehi hudan lilmuttaqeena

I understand that "Thalika AlKitaabu" is refering to "Alif", "Laam" & "Meem".

                                          As you saidlike in 133

"Alif", "Laam" & "Meem", each of these letters can have several meanings, they are symbolic because the Reading is a book composed with letters.

Thalika alkitab doesn't refer only to these 3 letters but to all what is written in the Book.
The book and the Reading/Quran are closely linked. The reading is one of several books (2285).

If we compare 133 and 22

In 133 after thalika, "ayatin/sings" is in a plural form without (al) and refers to stabilizers, rivers, fruit, the night, the day..

In 22 after thalika, alkitab is in a singular form with al, alkitab is a generic/wider term.
The God speaks about the Reading and the Book in the same manner as a guide.

As per my knowledge Allah never used "Thalika" for "AlQuraan"... it is always "Hatda AlQuraan" and also "Hatda" is not used with "ALKitaab".

thalika or hatda doesn't matter because hatda is not used in 133.

It is not true, can you say the same thing for 133?

The book and the Reading are closely linked

                                          1. A.L.R., these are the signs of the Scripture, and a clear Quran.

                                          2. T?.S. These are the signs of the Quran and a clear Scripture.

                                          3. A guide and good news to the believers.

                                          4. H. M.

                                          5. And the evident Scripture.
