A good muslim ... ??
-
Salaamun alaikum Ammar,
A good muslim is one who submits and surrenders peacefully to Allah and follows the straight path i.e. believes in God, believes in the Judgement Day, and does righteous deeds
262 Surely those who believe, and those who are Jewish, and the Nazarenes, and the Sabiens; any one of them who
believes in God and
the Last Day, and
does good work,
they will have their reward with their Lord, with no fear over them, nor will they grieve.572 "Those who believe, and those who are Jewish, and the Sabiens, and the Nazarenes; whoever of them
believes in God and
the Last Day and
does good works,
then they will have nothing to fear nor will they grieve."What are the righteous deeds?
6153 Say "Come let me recite to you what your Lord has forbidden for you that
you should not set up anything with Him; and
be kind to your parents; and
do not kill your unborn children for fear of poverty, We provide for you and for them; and
do not come near lewdness, what is plain of it or subtle; and
do not kill the soul which God has forbidden, except in justice. That is what He enjoined you that you may comprehend."
6154 "And
do not come near the money of the orphan, except for what is best, until he reached his maturity; and
give honestly full measure and weight equitably. We do not burden a soul except by what it can bear, and
if you speak then be just even if against a relative; and
regarding the pledges made to God, you shall observe them. This He has enjoined you that you may remember."
6155 And
this is My path, a Straight One. "So follow it, and do not follow the other paths lest they divert you from His path.
That is what He has enjoined you to that you may be righteous."Hope that answers your question. However if you meant what is a good "mumin" then let me know and I will elaborate on that.

haha i m asking all this cus my parents today for some reason said that its their falt that me and my sister are not good muslims (according to them) .. cus we haev male and female friends which is prohibited in Islam apparently like a male having female freidns ... haha .. its weird .. I dont know how they got that idea ??? ...

Salaamun alaikum Ammar,
Please show your parents the following
Good muslim as defined by Allah
4125 And who is better in the system than one who surrenders himself to God, and is a good doer, and he followed the creed of Abraham in monotheism? And God has taken Abraham as a friend.
4133 And who is better in saying than one who invites to God, and does good works, and says "I am one of those who have surrendered."Allah allows believing men and women to be friends. He does not allow believers to make friends with the disbelievers or rejectors
5822 You will not find any people who believe in God and the Last Day befriending those who oppose God and His messenger, even if they were their parents, or their children, or their siblings, or their tribe. For these, He decrees faith into their hearts, and supports them with a spirit from Him, and He admits them into paradises with rivers flowing beneath, wherein they will abide. God is pleased with them, and they are pleased with Him. These are the party of God. Most assuredly, the party of God are the winners.
The following ayat clearly shows that Allah allows believing men and women to be allies or friends
973 And the believing men and women, they are allies to one another. They order good and deter from evil, and they hold the contact-method, and they contribute towards betterment, and they obey God and His messenger. God will have mercy on them; God is Noble, Wise.
Believing men and women can be friends provided they do not transgress Allah's limits and meet the conditions mentioned in the following link

I believe you must follow the Quran and nothing but the Quran. THe Quran is gods words and it has fantastic advice. You need not follow your ancestors or parents or any one for that matter when the QUran tells you otherwise.
(5104,105)
-
When they are told, "Come to what GOD has revealed unto you, and to the messenger," they say, "What we found our parents doing is sufficient for us." What if their parents knew nothing, and were not guided?
-
O you who believe, you should worry only about your own necks. If the others go astray, they cannot hurt you, as long as you are guided. To GOD is your ultimate destiny, all of you, then He will inform you of everything you had done.
Is this proof enough.
God tells you what righteousness is.It is not Al-Birr (piety, righteousness) that you turn your faces towards east and (or) west (in prayers); but Al-Birr is (the quality of) the one who believes in All?h, the Last Day, the Angels, the Book, the Prophets [] and gives his wealth, in spite of love for it, to the kinsfolk, to the orphans, and to Al-Mas?kin (the poor), and to the wayfarer, and to those who ask, and to set slaves free, performs As-Sal?t (Iq?mat-as-Sal?t), and gives the Zak?t, and who fulfill their covenant when they make it, and who are As-S?birin (the patient ones, etc.) in extreme poverty and ailment (disease) and at the time of fighting (during the battles). Such are the people of the truth and they are AlMuttaq?n (2177)
A good muslim follows the above. Then comes the matter of Halal food.
He has forbidden you only
1 Al-Maytatah (meat of a dead animal),
2 blood,
3 the flesh of swine, and
4 any animal which is slaughtered as a sacrifice for others than All?h.
But if one is forced by necessity, without willful disobedience, and not transgressing, then, All?h is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. (16112-116)After we meet the above criterion we don?t need to worry about anything else.
See these and show your parents
Claiming that muslims must marry another muslim and that muslims should not eat from a Christian or Jewish homeThis day are (all) good things made lawful for you. The food of those who received the scripture is lawful for you, and your food is lawful for them. And so are the virtuous women of the believers and the virtuous women of those who received the scripture before you (lawful for you) when ye give them their marriage portions and live with them in honor, not in fornication, nor taking losers in the hereafter. 55
Claiming that only followers of the prophet are good.
And there are, certainly, among the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians), those who believe in All?h and in that which has been revealed to you, and in that which has been revealed to them, humbling themselves before All?h. They do not sell the Verses of All?h for a little price, for them is a reward with their Lord. Surely, All?h is Swift in account. 3199
"If the people of the scripture (Jews, Christians, and Muslims) believe and maintain a righteous life, we will remit their sins and admit them into the blissful Heaven. Had they observed the Torah, the Gospel, and what is revealed herein from their Lord, they would
have enjoyed provisions from above them, and from beneath their feet. Some of them are righteous, but most of them are evil doers.""If only the people of the various communities believed and maintained a righteous life, we would have showered them with blessings from the heaven and the earth"
"God is the One who controls your happiness, or misery .... God is the One who makes you rich or poor."
Surely, those who believe, those who are Jewish, the Christians, and the converts; anyone who
(1) believes in GOD, and
(2) believes in the Last Day, and
(3) leads a righteous life, will receive their recompense from their Lord. They have nothing to fear, nor will they grieve. (262)AMazing isnt it.

i am always being told to my face that im a bad muslim, mainly by my dad and his family. but ive given up listening now because to be honest i am doing the best i can in a very modern, westernized world and as long as i am living how i see myself to be quite a good person then that is all that matters, whether that makes me a good 'muslim' or not i dont care, as long as im a good 'PERSON' i think thats much more important than anything else.
to me, being muslim is about whats inside, now what you show or how you present yourself. its about the content of your heart, and to be honest its not much different to other religions in that light, because being a good person with a clean, moral heart is univeral. be a good person, stay true to yourself, stick to your morals and beliefs and follow your heart and i dont think you can ever really go wrong. there will ALWAYS be people around that will say you are not a good muslim, but there is no set perfect muslim, everyone thinks they are good but yet everyone is different. we weren't all created to be the same, so dont try to be like other 'good' muslims - be yourself and be the best person YOU can be.
sorry for the rant lol im just in one of those moods!

Hi,
It is not for any human to define him-/herself, or anyone else, a ?Muslim?, let alone good or bad ?Muslim?. The definition is up to God and God alone.
What we can do, is to try to live our lives as best we can, in accordance with the message of the Qur?an and other information we find in the Universe around us; what our common sense and our other senses tell us, and hope that God regards us as ?Muslims?.Anyone who declares him-/herself, or somebody else, a ?Muslim? or a ?non-Muslim? is taking on the role of God, thereby committing idolatry, with him-/herself as the idol.
We can declare to ourselves, and others, that we will try to live in accordance with the system of God and that?s it!Regds

Salaamun alaikum brother Ali Omar,
It is not for any human to define him-/herself, or anyone else, a ?Muslim?, let alone good or bad ?Muslim?. The definition is up to God and God alone.
I can agree that you cannot define anyone else as a muslim or not but where do you get the idea that you cannot call yourself muslim? Please give me evidence from Al-Quran that you cannot call yourself muslim. Allah says
4915 The Nomads said "We believe." Say "You have not believed; but you should Say 'We have surrendered', for belief has not yet entered into your hearts." If you obey God and His messenger, He will not put any of your works to waste. God is Forgiver, Merciful.
The bold and underlined part of the ayat above clearly shows that we can call ourselves muslim. Allah is clearly saying that the Nomads should say "we have surrendered" ( qooloo aslamna ) i.e. we are muslim
2131 When his Lord said to him "Surrender," he said "I surrender to the Lord of the worlds."
Here above, when Allah asks Abraham to surrender, he says that he surrenders to Allah i.e. he is a muslim ( aslamtu lirabbi alaalameena )
2136 Say "We believe in God and in what was sent down to us and what was sent down to Abraham, and Ishmael, and Isaac, and Jacob, and the Patriarchs, and what was given to Moses and Jesus, and what was given to the prophets from their Lord; we do not make a distinction between any of them and to Him we surrender."
Here we are clearly being asked by Allah to SAY that to Him we surrender i.e. we are muslim ( wanahnu lahu muslimoona )
321 If they debate with you, then Say "I have surrendered myself to God, as well as those who follow me." And say to those who have received the Scripture and the Gentiles "Have you surrendered?" If they have surrendered then they are guided, and if they turn away, then you are only to deliver, and God is watcher over the servants.
Here Allah is very clearly asking us to say that we are muslim.
352 So when Jesus felt their rejection, he said "Who are my supporters to God?" The disciples said "We are God's supporters, we believe in God and we bear witness that we have surrendered."
Here the disciples of Jesus are clearly saying that they have surrendered i.e. they are muslim
364 Say "O people of the Scripture, let us come to a common understanding between us and between you; that we do not serve except God, and do not set up anything at all with Him, and that none of us takes each other as patrons beside God." If they turn away, then Say "Bear witness that we have surrendered."
Here we are being asked to bear witness that we have surrendered i.e we are muslim
6166 "He has no partner, and it is to this that I was commanded, and I am the first of those who have surrendered."
Here prophet Muhammad is saying he is the first of the muslims i.e. he is a muslim
Anyone who declares him-/herself, or somebody else, a ?Muslim? or a ?non-Muslim? is taking on the role of God, thereby committing idolatry, with him-/herself as the idol.
You are not the law maker, Allah is the law maker. Please give evidence of the underlined part above from Al-Quran that we cannot call ourselves muslim. Please refrain from conjecturing and be very careful of what you say because if someone invents lies against The God, The God calls that person wicked
6146 Who is more wicked than one who invents lies about God to misguide the people without knowledge.

Salaamun alaikum Angel,
how i see myself to be quite a good person then that is all that matters, whether that makes me a good 'muslim' or not i dont care, as long as im a good 'PERSON' i think thats much more important than anything else.
If one is not spending ones life according to Allah's will, according to His message, then one is not muslim; it doesn't matter what one thinks. One might think that one is a good person and might see oneself to be a good person, but it does not make one ACTUALLY a good person if one's beliefs and actions are not according to Al-Quran.
to me, being muslim is about whats inside, now what you show or how you present yourself. its about the content of your heart, and to be honest its not much different to other religions in that light
Being muslim is not just about whats inside, it is also what actions ( good works or righteous deeds ) you perform and how you present yourself. It is both the heart ( belief ) and the actions ( righteous deeds )
225 And give good news to those who believe and do good works
357 "And as for those who believed and did good works, We will pay them their reward
4124 And whoever works good be he male or female, and he is a believer, then these will be admitted to Paradise, and they will not be wronged in the least.
4173 As for those who believe and do good works, He will give them their rewards and increase for them from His bounty.
572 "Those who believe, and those who are Jewish, and the Sabiens, and the Nazarenes; whoever of them believes in God and the Last Day and does good works, then they will have nothing to fear nor will they grieve."
596 There is no sin upon those who believe and do good works for what they eat if they are aware and believe and do good work, then they are aware and believe, then they are aware and do good; God loves the good doers. There are many many more ayat that say the same thing.
be a good person, stay true to yourself, stick to your morals and beliefs and follow your heart and i dont think you can ever really go wrong
If we follow only our heart then the problem is we cannot be sure what is in our heart or what our heart is telling us to do is really the right thing/the truth or if it is a wrong thing/falsehood inspired or whispered by satan or the evil jinns or evil humans, and there is a possibility of getting deceived and misguided
6114 We have permitted the enemies of every prophet, human and Jinn devils, to inspire in each other with fancy words in order to deceive. Had your Lord willed, they would not have done it. You shall disregard them and their fabrications.
2399 And Say "My Lord, I seek refuge with you from the whispers of the devils."
1145 "From the evil of the sneaking whisperer,"
1146 "Who whispers into the chests of mankind,"
1147 "From among the Jinn and mankind."If we follow only our desires without knowledge we can go wrong. If we transgress Allah's limits we can go wrong. The only way to avoid following our hearts wrong desires or to avoid transgressing Allah's limits is to have the knowledge to guide us which can only be obtained from Allah's words.
3029 No, those who were wrong followed their desires without knowledge.
652 And anyone who transgresses God's limits has wronged his soul.
2185 A month in early autumn, in which the Quran was sent down as a guide to the people and a clarification of the guidance and the criterionThe only way we can be absolutely sure if a thing is right and the truth is to follow the word of The God and be His servants, and then surely we cannot go wrong
1765 "And entice whoever you can of them with your voice, and mobilize all your forces and men against them, and you may share with them in their money and children, and promise them." But the devil promises nothing but deceit.
1766 "As for My servants, you will have no power over them." And your Lord suffices as a Caretaker.Regards,

Peace be upon you,
There is no good or bad "muslim". It is not a title, only a description. What would be a "bad" muslim? How can there be such a thing?
the word "muslim" DESCRIBES a peaceful submitting human, if someone were to do wrong, he/she would simply not be described as "muslim". The God confirms this line of reasoning with the statement "do not dies except as a peaceful submitter(muslim)".
-
Dear tanveermd,
You give the evidence yourself from the Qur?an in the verses you refer to.
You surrender or you have surrendered; when and for how long?
If you state that you ARE a ?Muslim? it means that you have reached a permanent state of submission.
You, yourself, say in your answer to Angel
?If one is not spending ones life according to Allah's will, according to His message, then one is not muslim; it doesn't matter what one thinks.?
And like idolfree1 is also stating
?Muslim is not a title, only a description.?
You may think and act in accordance with the words of God in one instance. In the next moment you may not.
Can you then call yourself a ?Muslim??
As you stated
?Please refrain from conjecturing and be very careful of what you say because if someone invents lies against The God, The God calls that person wicked6146 Who is more wicked than one who invents lies about God to misguide the people without knowledge. ?

Salaamun alaikum Ali Omar,
You give the evidence yourself from the Qur?an in the verses you refer to.
Can you then call yourself a ?Muslim??I quoted several ayat from Al-Quran that show your wrong understanding. Its not what I think, its what Allah says in Al-Quran.
All I am saying is that Allah Himself has allowed and asked a muslim to describe and to call himself/herself a muslim ( wanahnu lahu muslimoona 2136 ). You have not presented a single proof from Al-Quran otherwise. I humbly request you to study Allah's words and do not say anything on your own as if it were a law when Allah has not said such a thing (i.e. invent lies or conjecture)
It is not for any human to define him-/herself, or anyone else, a ?Muslim?, let alone good or bad ?Muslim?. The definition is up to God and God alone.
Prove that (the bold parts only) from Al-Quran instead of conjecturing. I have shown clearly that what you said above contradicts many clear ayat of Al-Quran
Anyone who declares him-/herself, or somebody else, a ?Muslim? or a ?non-Muslim? is taking on the role of God, thereby committing idolatry, with him-/herself as the idol.
Since when have you become a law maker of Islam? Please prove what you said above (bold parts only) from Al-Quran
It is not a title, only a description
Muslim is a description as well as a title. Allah has named the submitters muslim. When Allah names you a "muslim" it is a title, not a description, although it could be a description also in other contexts
2277 And strive in the cause of God its truly deserved striving. He is the One who has chosen you, and He has made no hardship for you in the system, the creed of your father Abraham; He is the One who named you 'those who have surrendered' from before as well as in this. So let the messenger be witness over you and you be witness over mankind. So hold the contact-method and contribute towards betterment and hold tight to God, He is your patron. What an excellent Patron, and what an excellent Supporter.
In the following ayat, a person is being named "Mary", so is "Mary" a title or a description?
337 So when she delivered she said "My Lord, I have delivered a female," and God is fully aware of what she delivered, "And the male is not like the female, and I have named her Mary, and I seek refuge for her and her progeny with You from the outcast devil."

Who gave us the right to decide?
?And most of them believe not in All?h except that they attribute partners unto Him? (12106)
?Say (O Muhammad) "Shall I seek a judge other than All?h while it is He who has sent down unto you the Book (The Qur'?n), explained in detail." Those unto whom we gave the Scripture know that it is revealed from your Lord in truth. So be not you of those who doubt.? (6114)
The Holy Quran our only source of religious teaching
God calls our attention to the importance of the Quran.- This is the Scripture (The book)
- whereof there is no doubt,
- a guidance unto the Al-Muttaq?n
- Who believe in the unseen, and establish worship, and spend of that We have bestowed upon them
- And who believe in that which is revealed unto thee
- And that which was revealed before thee, and are certain of the Hereafter.
- These depend on guidance from their Lord.
- These are the successful. (Al Baqarah)
We are assured that Allah protects this book from falsehood. We could feel safe only with the Quran for criterion (Furqan) simply because Allah doesn?t talk about any other entity.
All?h blots out what He wills and confirms (what He wills). And with Him is the source of the Scripture. (1339)No falsehood could enter it, in the past or in the future; a revelation from a Most Wise, Praiseworthy (4142).
God taught us the Quran. Is there any one or anything we can trust more than God?
The Almighty. Teacher of the Quran. (551-2)Allah commands and also says rarely we listen to him. We must follow what is revealed to us from our lord & our lord is Allah. If we follow other teachings no matter where it comes from if it does not come from Allah we are following an idol.
This scripture has been revealed to you-you shall not harbor doubt about it in your heart-that you may warn with it, and to provide a reminder for the believers. You shall all follow what is revealed to you from your Lord; do not follow any idols besides Him. Rarely do you take heed. (71-2)
People give reasons for their idolatry. But who?s testimony is greatest, mine, yours, other peoples or gods. You decide. Say, "Whose testimony is the greatest?" Say, "God?s. He is the witness between me and you that this Quran* has been inspired to me, to preach it to you and whomever it reaches. Indeed, you bear witness that there are other gods* beside GOD." Say, "I do not testify as you do; there is only one god, and I disown your idolatry." (63
We are commanded not to seek any other source of law. The Quran is the only law since it is the only word of God. That is, if you believe in the hereafter. We guess and follow conjecture rather than following the Quran (Surah 6)
113. That is so the hearts of those who do not believe in the Hereafter will listen to it, and they will accept it, and they will take of it what they will.
114. ?Shall I seek other than God as a judge when He has sent down to you this Scripture fully detailed?? Those to whom We have given the Scripture know it is sent down from your. Lord with truth; so do not be of those who have doubt.
115. And the word of your Lord has been completed with truth and justice; there is no changing His words. He is the Hearer, the Knower.
116. And if you obey the majority of those on Earth they will lead you astray; that is because they follow conjecture, and that is because they only guess. If we follow any religious laws not authorized by Allah, we are transgressors. If Allah is the only source of law as above & the quran is what he sent to us FULLY DETAILED and we look for other sources of law that source is ilah for us. La ilaha illallah
They follow idols who decree for them religious laws never authorized by GOD. If it were not for the predetermined decision, they would have been judged immediately. Indeed, the transgressors have incurred a painful retribution. 4221When you preach with only the Quran people don?t listen and they don?t care. We are experiencing it now. The need for accompaniments or additions to the Quran is embedded in the present day Muslims. In fact the whole religion is based those additional teachings.
We place shields around their minds, to prevent them from understanding it, and deafness in their ears. And when you preach your Lord, using the Quran alone, they run away in aversion. (1746)God uses His own attributes to describe the Quran; He calls the Quran "Azeem = Great" (1587), "Hakeem = Full of wisdom" (362), "Majid = Glorious" (501), and "Karim = Honorable" (5677).
Think fairly, are we taking the Quran as our only source of religious teaching. Knowing that this is the only communication assured by Allah to be only source and that god himself is protecting it. Then why are we discussing assumptions when the Quran clearly tells what a muslim is. Also let me tell you that according to the Quran Islam (Submission) is the only religion ever.
What is piety or righteousness. This is what our creator defines who is Al Muttaqun in two translations.
Righteousness is not turning your faces towards the east or the west. Righteous are
- those who believe in GOD
- the Last Day,
- the angels,
- the scripture,
- and the prophets;
- and they give the money, cheerfully, to the relatives, the orphans, the needy, the traveling alien, the beggars, and to free the slaves;
- and they observe the Prayers (Salat)
- and give the obligatory charity (Zakat);
- and they keep their word whenever they make a promise;
- and they steadfastly persevere in the face of persecution, hardship, and war. These are the truthful; these are the righteous (Al Mittaqun). (2177)
Do we do this? just ask your self.

Dear tanveermd,
In 3.37 it is said that a woman gave birth to a girl and she ?named her Maryama? - ?sammaytuha maryama?.
What an excellent Patron, and what an excellent Supporter
In 22.77 GOD is naming someone ?Muslim?, not another human being.
Please point out to me where, in the Qur?an it is said that anyone BESIDES GOD, may name anyone ?Muslim?, as I can not find that.
However, I do find that God says that anyone, when he/she follows the words of God, is a ?Muslim?.Please also review your own statement
?If one is not spending ones life according to Allah's will, according to His message, then one is not muslim; it doesn't matter what one thinks.?
Also, if you would be kind enough to look again at my simple, straight forward question
?You may think and act in accordance with the words of God in one instance. In the next moment you may not.
Can you then call yourself a ?Muslim???Some of the numerous verses in the Qur?an telling us not to take God?s role as judge
(24.51) The utterance of the believers when they are invited to God and His messenger to judge in their affairs is to Say "We hear and obey." These are the winners.
They do not say ?I am a Muslim?.
(27.7 Your Lord decides between them by His judgment. And He is the Noble, the Knowledgeable.
(34.26) Say "Our Lord will gather us together then He will judge between us with truth. He is the Judge, the Knowledgeable."
(40.20) And God judges with the truth, while those they call on besides Him do not judge with anything. Certainly, God is the Hearer, the Seer.
I think, therefore it is advisable not to be one that boasts ?I am a Muslim? when God has not said so, because God knows what is in our hearths.

Salaamun alaikum Ali Omar,
I have already produced many ayat in which Allah clearly says that muslims can or should call themselves muslims
Allah is clearly saying that the Nomads should say "we have surrendered" ( qooloo aslamna ) i.e. they are muslim
Here Allah is very clearly saying that we can say that we are muslim.
Here we are being asked to confirm and declare that we have surrendered i.e we are muslim
6166 "He has no partner, and it is to this that I was commanded, and I am the first of those who have surrendered."
Here prophet Muhammad is saying he is the first of the muslims i.e. he is a muslim
You keep making statements that contradict the above ayat. Show me one ayat that says a muslim cannot call himself/herself muslim. This is the third time I am asking.
Also this is the third time I am asking you to quote the ayat that prove the underlined parts of what you claim i.e. the laws according to you
Ali Omar wrote
Anyone who declares him-/herself, or somebody else, a ?Muslim? or a ?non-Muslim? is taking on the role of God, thereby committing idolatry, with him-/herself as the idol.Ali Omar wrote
It is not for any human to define him-/herself, or anyone else, a ?Muslim?, let alone good or bad ?Muslim?.You conveniently keep ignoring my requests to provide your proof in the form of ayat from Al-Quran for the underlined parts of your statements above. I am not talking about judging others but calling yourself a muslim. In the ayat that I quoted above, Allah is clearly asking and allowing muslims to call and declare themselves muslims.
You have quoted the following ayat that are not pertinent at all to the underlined parts of your statements
2779 This Quran narrates to the Children of Israel most of that which they are in dispute over.
2780 And it is a guidance and mercy for the believers.
2781 Your Lord decides between them by His judgment. And He is the Noble, the Knowledgeable. In these ayat Allah is saying that He decides Jew's disputes by His judgement i.e. by Al-Quran. It does not say that a muslim cannot call oneself a muslim.
3427 Say "Our Lord will gather us together then He will judge between us with truth. He is the Judge, the Knowledgeable."
This ayat is clearly talking about Allah's judgement between people on the Last Day. It does not say that a muslim cannot call oneself a muslim in this life.
4018 And warn them of the imminent Day, when the hearts will reach the throats, and many will be remorseful.
4019 The transgressors will have no friend nor intercessor to be obeyed.
4020 He knows what the eyes have seen, and what the chests conceal.
4021 And God judges with the truth, while those they call on besides Him do not judge with anything. Certainly, God is the Hearer, the Seer. Here again Allah is talking about the Last Day and the transgressors and that He judges with the truth about their transgressions. It does not say that a muslim cannot call oneself a muslim in this life.
In your latest reply you seem to have changed "your" law but still have not quoted any ayat to support your changed stance (from saying that "anyone who calls oneself muslim is committing idolatry" to "it is advisable not to call oneself muslim"
I think, therefore it is advisable not to be one that boasts ?I am a Muslim? when God has not said so
I think is clearly = I conjecture. The only improvement is that at least you are acknowledging that it is your conjecture (I think) rather than a law of Islam.

Dear Ali Omar,
If you state that you ARE a ?Muslim? it means that you have reached a permanent state of submission..........
You may think and act in accordance with the words of God in one instance. In the next moment you may not.
Can you then call yourself a ?Muslim??A muslim can call oneself a muslim and after that it is possible to commit a sin or mistake and then repent to Allah soon after and never repeat the mistake again, and be forgiven by Allah and still remain a muslim thereby remaining in a permanent state of submission despite committing a mistake.
Being in a permanent state of submission does not mean that one cannot commit any mistake at all. Human beings are not perfect and being human means there is a possibility that one can commit a mistake. Repenting to Allah after committing a mistake and then never repeating the mistake again is part of submission.
I will prove the above from Al-Quran using the example of prophet Muhammad.
6166 "He has no partner, and it is to this that I was commanded, and I am the first of those who have surrendered."
Here prophet Muhammad is saying he is the first of the muslims i.e. he is calling himself a muslim. After this he commits some mistakes
802 He frowned and turned away.
803 When the blind one came to him.
804 And what makes you know, perhaps he is seeking to purify?
805 Or to remember, so the remembrance will benefit him?
806 As for the one who was rich.
807 You were addressing yourself to him.
808 And why does it concern you that he does not want to purify?
809 And as for the one who came to you seeking.
8010 While he was fearful.
8011 You were too pre-occupied for him.3338 And you said to the one who was blessed by God, and blessed by you "Keep your wife and reverence God," and you hid inside yourself what God wished to proclaim. And you feared the people, while it was God you were supposed to fear. So when Zayd ended his relationship with his wife, We had you marry her, to establish that there is no wrongdoing for the believers in marrying the wives of their adopted sons if their relationship is ended. And God's command is always done.
662 O you prophet, why do you prohibit what God has made lawful for you, seeking to please your wives? God is Forgiver, Merciful.
After these mistakes the prophet repents soon after
11113 So stand straight as you were commanded and those who repented with you and do not transgress. He is watcher over what you do.
429 And anything you dispute in, then its judgment shall be with God. Such is God my Lord. In Him I put my trust, and to Him I repent.
2432 And repent to God, all of you believers, that you may succeed. And Allah accepts the repentence of the believers and forgives
389 Except those who repent after this and make amends, then God is Forgiver, Merciful.
418 Repentance is only for those who commit sin out of ignorance and then repent soon after; these will be forgiven by God, God is Knowledgeable, Wise.
577 Would they not repent to God and seek His forgiveness? God is Forgiving, Merciful.
1191 "And seek forgiveness from your Lord then repent to Him. My Lord is Merciful, Loving."
4224 And He is the One who accepts the repentance from His servants, and He forgives the sins.
669 O you who believe, you shall repent to God a sincere repentance. It may be that your Lord will remit your sins and admit you into paradises with rivers flowing beneath. On that Day, God will not disappoint the prophet and those who believed with him. This proves that even the prophet could call himself muslim, then commit a mistake but repent soon after, and be forgiven by Allah, and remain a muslim. So clearly the permanent state of submission remains a state of submission even when one commits a mistake but repents soon after.
ANOTHER POINT
Belief or faith may have not entered ones heart and one can still be a muslim and call oneself a muslim, because a muslim is one who submits and obeys but not necessary believes. So belief is not a requirement to be a muslim
4915 The Nomads said "We believe." Say "You have not believed; but you should Say 'We have surrendered', for belief has not yet entered into your hearts." If you obey God and His messenger, He will not put any of your works to waste. God is Forgiver, Merciful.
4916 Believers are those who believe in God and His messenger, then they became without doubt, and they strive with their money and their lives in the cause of God. These are the truthful ones. -
Salaam omar,tanveer,all,
I think
6166 "He has no partner, and it is to this that I was commanded, and I am the first of those who have surrendered."
He is not calling himself a "Muslim"
But is saying He has surrendered or He is the first of those who will obey Allah's Law ,in the quran.
Calling or telling people you are a trainee engineer when really you are a hooligan is totally scriptureless.
What do you gurues think?
Salaams.

Salaamun alaikum mz357,
I think
6166 "He has no partner, and it is to this that I was commanded, and I am the first of those who have surrendered."
He is not calling himself a "Muslim" But is saying he has surrendered
The Arabic is as follows
English
Progressive Muslims 6166 "He has no partner, and it is to this that I was commanded, and I am the first of those who have surrendered."
Arabic
Original Text 6166It is clear that he is saying that "I am the first of almuslimeena"
If he would have said that he has surrendered the arabic would be "ASLAMNA".
So Muhammad here is clearly saying that he is a MUSLIM, and not that he has ASLAMA
If for example I say for myself I am the first of the students, I am calling myself a student i.e. I am a student. But if I say I have studied then that is different. Same is the case for the above.
Brother Ali Omar,
2277 And strive in the cause of God its truly deserved striving. What an excellent Patron, and what an excellent Supporter
In 22.77 GOD is naming someone ?Muslim?, not another human being.
When God names someone "muslim" that muslim can call oneself "muslim" also, especially when Allah has allowed oneself to call "muslim" in so many ayat. Similar example would be that your parents probably named you Ali Omar, so does that mean that you cannot call yourself Ali Omar? That would be ridiculous. Where does it say in Al-Quran that Allah says that He named a muslim "muslim" but the muslim cannot call oneself "muslim".
(24.51) The utterance of the believers when they are invited to God and His messenger to judge in their affairs is to Say "We hear and obey." These are the winners.
They do not say ?I am a Muslim?.
When Allah says something to the believers, they say that they hear and obey. So when Allah asked them to call themselves muslim they did so immediately because they hear and obey
2136 Say "We believe in God and in what was sent down to us and what was sent down to Abraham, and Ishmael, and Isaac, and Jacob, and the Patriarchs, and what was given to Moses and Jesus, and what was given to the prophets from their Lord; we do not make a distinction between any of them and to Him we surrender." (wanahnu lahu muslimoona)
364 Say "O people of the Scripture, let us come to a common understanding between us and between you; that we do not serve except God, and do not set up anything at all with Him, and that none of us takes each other as patrons beside God." If they turn away, then Say "Bear witness that we have surrendered." (bi anna muslimoona)
6166 "He has no partner, and it is to this that I was commanded, and I am the first of those who have surrendered." (wa ana awwala almuslimeena)
The believers hear and obey and call themselves muslim. Not like some of us who do not want to call themselves muslims after they have believed, when Allah has clearly allowed them to say so i.e. they do not hear and obey

peace All,
How sure is it that awl in 6163 means 'first'?
How many signs specifically state Muslim as a title/noun? (i.e. there is no other possibility in the grammar or context) From my study, its unlikely to be more than a few, the vast majority of usage can easily be read as a descriptor. Thus, its primary signification is as a descriptor, not as a title/noun. I'm not saying it cant be used as such, all I'm saying is that dont be fooled into thinking 'Muslim' is a magical title that allows one to be in the fold of the righteous. At the end of the day, the title means absolutely nothing.
mu (one who) slim (complies)
A quote from PRL which demonstrates the point (using a different root though)
In a horse race when the second horse follows the first one so closely that its head always overlaps the first horse?s body that horse is called AL-MUSSALLI
By looking at the root meanings of Sawd-Lam-Waw, one can easily see this so-called title is derived from the meaning.
AL-MUSSALLI = the one who follows closely / remains attached / continues contact.
A small point perhaps, but one that must be understood.
