Hi Osiris,
welcome to the Forum!
Peace!

Hello Osiris,
Welcome to the board. D Hope you get the chance to visit the main website - www.free-minds.org - where you'll find some information on the different beliefs. There's also a translation here if you're interested - http//www.free-minds.org/quran/
So, I guess as I come to this website, I am curious about the beliefs, is this just a gathering of like minded individuals, and why are some people labeling people who reject the hadith as 'cultists'?
In regard to belief, we're blessed to have members from different backgrounds/cultures/faiths... so no need to worry about how the some choose to believe.
Again, welcome and thanks for sharing your story with us. Please feel free to participate in the different sections of the forum.
Peace )

Salam Osiris
Welcome and please do make your self at home here.
We will most definitely treat you like one of the family and feel free to ask what you want and don't be ashamed.
I was thinking of writing to the mods to ask them to change the name from Progressive Muslims to Previously Confused Muslims but some how it just doesn't sound right. what do you think? wink
-
Hmmm...you know its funny we even call it 'progressive' muslims. I like terms like Originalist, or Purist, for what I believe. Because I dont think we are believing anything that the original muslims of the prophet Mohammed's time didn't believe.
Currently, in my process of discovery, I have found that the whole concept of halal meat in terms of saying Allah's name at the slaughter appears to be a fabrication. I think most of you have already come to that conclusion I never went out of my way to eat halal meat, but now i can stop feeling slightly guilty about it!
Now I am doing research on the validity of hadith. I never believed any of them are trustworthy, but now I think if there is a compilation of hadith that is completely supported by the quran, than I'd accept it. I wonder if there is any such compilation of hadith anywhere in print.

Salam Osiris,
Please read my life story at http//www.y19.net/phpBB2/viewforum.php?f=7
Youll find how i converted from a strict fanatical sunni to a Quran Aloner who believes in code-19 and also that Rashad Khalifa WAS a messenger(NOT a prophet who brings a new scripture according to Quran, plz read http//www.submission.org/messenger/prophet.html ) of GOD. GOD Bless! -

An interesting article on this topic

Hmm, Interesting. I'm not convinced, but it is enough to make me want to find those Sura's that I had not considered in regards to this matter and hear the arabic so as to know if the translations on that link are accurate. One thing I am not following in the logic in that link is
Now if we see carefully the verses 6118, 6121 (in which the context is not clear whether the reference is to animals or otherwise), there is another key point to note. The addressee in the verses is the second person YOU, but the mentioning of the name of Allah is in THIRD PERSON (passive voice). See the verses again as below
YOU eat of that over which the name of Allah HAS BEEN MENTIONED
YOU do not eat over which the name of Allah HAS NOT BEEN MENTIONED
What is the author trying to say about the third person and second person here? And are they taking in to account the grammatical structure in arabic and english are very different?

JK- This is an interesting point. What the author means that the above stetemtns of GOD are thus NOT a COMMAND but simply statements of facts of what believers would do but ultimately it still means that believers wont eat anything except after pronouncing the name of GOD on it. BUT 6121 seems like a command to me since it uses "TAkulu" and not just "kulu" but im not sure. GOD Bless!

I will God willing have a look at this issue..
In the meantime, I suggest you to look for answers to your questions by using this tool http//www.studyquran.co.uk/, where you will find links to 26 translations of the Quran.
May God help you,
